KGHM Receives "White Leaf" CSR Award from POLITYKA Among Polish ESG Leaders

PARTNER TEXT

KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. has been recognized for its sustained and systematic actions with the "White Leaf" CSR POLITYKI award. These prestigious distinctions are granted for implementing the most crucial management categories recommended by the ISO 26000 standard. Practices evaluated included those related to labor, environmental impact management systems, social engagement, and local community development.

SUSTAINABLE KGHM

In line with its adopted strategy, KGHM focuses its activities, among other things, on the idea of sustainable development and care for environmental and climate protection – aiming to both prevent climate change and effectively adapt to it. This is reflected in the initiatives undertaken and the internal normative acts adopted, such as the Climate Policy or the Human Rights Policy. In the past year, each of the company's strategic initiatives underwent additional assessment. The impact was examined in terms of negative, neutral, or positive influence on Scope 1 and 2 GHG (Greenhouse gas) emissions, on ESG image divided into three categories: environment, society, and corporate governance, impact on threat mitigation, and support for climate opportunities according to TCFD (Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures) Recommendations. Furthermore, KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. is implementing a series of other organizational and process changes, including in areas related to corporate governance.

POLISH COPPER FOR LOCAL COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The company also maintains an active dialogue with local communities, resulting in numerous actions for the development of residents and the areas where it operates. For years, it has been running CSR programs, including EKO-zdrowie (Eco-Health), through which residents of the Copper Belt participate in free Nordic walking classes or swimming lessons. Polska Miedź also sponsors national, regional, and local cultural institutions, sports clubs, and recreational and health-promoting events. KGHM also co-finances the implementation of family-oriented programs supporting the parenting and educational competencies of parents, teachers, and guardians, such as the School for Parents and Educators, the Family Strengthening Program, or workshops titled "Reality of People with Autism Spectrum." The company also participates in the nationwide "Two Hours for Family" campaign and encourages local governments to participate in educational prevention programs, including Archipelag Skarbów (Treasure Archipelago), Gwiazda Mocy (Star of Power), or Leader100. Approximately 40,000 beneficiaries have benefited from all these activities to date.

KGHM's CSR activities also include the "Mie(dź) Rodzinę" (Copper (for) Family) campaign, in which, together with the local governments of the Copper Belt, foster care is promoted. The copper company also implements the "CUdowni rodzice" (CU-d parents - a play on words with 'copper' and 'wonderful') program, which has received multiple awards. Within this program, on the occasion of a child's birth, employees receive congratulations and gifts for parents and infants, including baby clothes, copper pendants, and teddy bears.

Employee volunteering is also thriving at KGHM. This year alone, KGHM volunteers participated in dozens of aid actions. Examples include planting forests, flowers, and shrubs, blood drives, cleaning recreational areas, or the "Pączek ze Szlachetnym Nadzieniem" (Donut with a Noble Filling) charity event, which in 2023 raised over PLN 143,000 among the company's employees.

ABOUT THE RANKING

The "Polityka" weekly, in cooperation with the consulting firm Deloitte and the Responsible Business Forum, has recognized Polish ESG leaders for the 12th time. This is one of the oldest initiatives of its kind on the market. Awards are given to companies that, in their operations, in addition to economic aspects, emphasize social and environmental issues, managing them effectively. Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and its consequences beyond market effects, companies' engagement for Ukrainians and Ukraine was also assessed, and the main barriers related to these actions and assistance were identified. In this year's edition of the ranking, 127 applications were considered, and 104 companies received distinctions.
