KGHM Submits Application for Decision in Principle for Small Modular Nuclear Reactor Project in Poland
PARTNERSHIP TEXT KGHM has submitted an application to the Ministry of Climate and Environment for a decision in principle regarding the project to build a small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) in Poland. A decision in principle is the first administrative permit in the system for nuclear energy investments in Poland that an investor can apply for. Obtaining a decision in principle signifies the state's support for the implementation of a given undertaking and grants the right to apply for a series of subsequent administrative decisions, such as, among others, a location permit and a building permit. KGHM will not provide information on the proceedings or the details of the application until the administrative procedure is completed. The involvement of State Treasury companies in the energy transformation is supported by Jacek Sasin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State Assets. “Nuclear energy is clean, cheap, safe energy and will ensure Poland's continued development. The involvement of Polish companies in ensuring the country's energy security will allow us to effectively build a strong state. I thank KGHM for its strong commitment to this process,” says Jacek Sasin. “KGHM is one of the largest Polish companies and, at the same time, one of the largest energy consumers in the country. Therefore, our commitment to energy projects, among which the nuclear project holds a primary significance, is obvious. This undertaking will guarantee the stability of our operations in the future. Considering the scale of KGHM's demand, the company's energy transformation towards renewable sources and nuclear reactors will also be a significant element of the entire Polish energy mix,” stated Tomasz Zdzikot, President of the Management Board of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. KGHM is involved in the development of nuclear energy in Poland, i.e., the construction of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). In 2022, KGHM signed a preliminary work agreement with the American company NuScale Power, LLC (a nuclear technology supplier), marking the first step in the process of implementing SMR technology within the business operations of the KGHM Group. KGHM conducts its activities in line with the idea of sustainable development and continuously strives to ensure that its entire technological chain is safe, innovative, and consistent with the idea of a Circular Economy. Its activities and commitments in these areas are outlined in the company's Environmental Policy and Climate Policy, the overarching goal of which is to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Investments that contribute to the energy transformation are also crucial for the copper giant. KGHM aims to diversify its energy sources, including actively utilizing renewable energy sources. By 2030, 50% of the electricity consumed by KGHM will come from its own sources, including renewables. Already, the Sierra Gorda mine in Chile is powered 100% by renewable energy.
