Impact's Visionary: Bernard Foing – Scientist and Visionary Exploring Life Beyond Earth
Bernard Foing is one of the leading scientists dedicated to space research and the possibilities that its conquest offers humanity. This specialist from the European Space Agency was the chief scientist during the first European mission to the Moon, and today he investigates the potential for inhabiting other planets. In May, Foing will be one of the guests on the stage of the spring edition of Impact’21. Bernard Foing was the chief scientist for the SMART-1 project, Europe's first mission to the Moon. Today, he primarily focuses on astrobiology and the possibility of inhabiting planets beyond Earth, as well as planetology (an interdisciplinary scientific field concerned with the study of the structure and evolution of celestial bodies). Space missions, telescopic observations, laboratory research, simulations, and the use of robots are the methods Foing employs in his daily work. According to Bernard Foing, the creation of a European lunar colony by 2050 is a realistic prospect for the future. In 2017, he stated that within a dozen years, an initial settlement of six to ten pioneers – scientists, technicians, and engineers – could be established on the Moon. He believes that, over time, this settlement could grow to accommodate up to 100 people. Mission to Mars Bernard Foing is also an ambassador for the European Space Agency's "Moon Village" Initiative, an international organization of European countries aimed at exploring and utilizing outer space. Its core idea is to create an international environment for fostering both scientific collaboration and the commercialization of space. Furthermore, Foing is involved in research concerning the Red Planet as part of the Mars Express space exploration mission. There, he studies organic matter and uses a stereo camera to capture colorful, three-dimensional images of the planet's surface. In the future, this could be instrumental in identifying potential landing sites on Mars. Bernard Foing is a senior specialist at the European Space Agency. He serves as the executive director of the International Lunar Exploration Working Group (ILEWG). ILEWG is a public forum sponsored by space agencies worldwide, dedicated to lunar exploration. Foing also sits on the committees of numerous organizations involved in space and astronautics, such as the International Astronautical Federation, the Committee on Space Research, and the International Academy of Astronautics. He currently collaborates as a research fellow with two academic institutions – Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Florida Institute of Technology. What to Expect at the May Impact’21 Stage? Since its inception, Impact has organized events that are a phenomenon on the Polish conference market: the traditional format of long panel discussions has been replaced by short, dynamic presentations, and the agenda has impressed with the number of international guests. In its 5 years of existence, Impact has earned a reputation as a high-caliber economic and political event. This year, the team has gone a step further, and the spring conference will be enriched by, among other things, a special track dedicated to blockchain technology, as well as tracks on Art, Sport, and Women Empowerment, addressing the situation of women in the labor market and media. High-ranking international speakers will appear at this event, including Sir Leszek Borysiewicz from Cancer Research UK, David Liebers, a virologist from Ellis Medicine, Sheila Warren from the World Economic Forum, Giles Dickson, CEO of the European wind industry association WindEurope, and Natalia Brzeziński, Head of Strategy at Klarna. Additionally, the Art track will feature one of the most popular young-generation artists, Łukasz Patelczyk, and the Sport track will include the well-known Anna Lewandowska.
