POLITICAL GAME: Kublik: COVID as an Opportunity for Tusk to Show Competence, Białach: Hetman as Commissioner to Divert PSL from Hołownia? GW: 200,000 Disabled Without Pension Increase
-- GAZETA WROCŁAWSKA ON A DISTINGUISHED SCIENTIST REMOVED FROM AN INSTITUTION TO MAKE SPACE FOR A POLITICAL NOMINEE OF THE NEW COALITION: “Polish scientist, chemist Dr. hab. eng. Alicja Bachmatiuk, returned to Poland from a lucrative and prestigious position at a research center in South Korea. What motivated her? She wanted to build scientific competence in Poland, develop research projects, and successfully commercialize them for the country. She started working at EIT+ in Wrocław, and soon took on the role of director of one of the institutes of the Łukasiewicz Research Network (SBŁ), PORT (Ł-PORT, successor to EIT+) – crucial from the perspective of the state's economic interests and policy, focusing on the commercialization of research results. The new management of SBŁ, to which the unit headed by Alicja Bachmatiuk reports, quickly began making her unethical proposals. She was to hire someone as her deputy, and not through a competition, and soon she was to agree to step down herself, so that party nominees could take the positions. The end result is that Bachmatiuk was deprived of her position and the illusion that politics has nothing to do with science.”

-- PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: SOCIAL PENSION INCREASE EXCLUDES 200,000 OF US – PAULINA NODZYŃSKA IN GW: “Following amendments introduced by Civic Coalition, the group of people who will receive extra money from January 1, 2025, has been narrowed down to approximately 100,000 people. These are those who have two certifications: 'inability to self-sustain' and 'inability to work.' The rest, who will not receive assistance, are individuals with only one certification – inability to work. And it is precisely they who are bitter today and feel cheated. 'This is harmful and unjust. I am left with a pension of 1620 PLN, which is a starvation amount, as it does not cover any of my needs, such as rehabilitation costs, medication, or doctor's appointments,' says a young woman with a significant degree of disability.”

-- COVID CIRCULATING IN OLYMPIC PARIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR TUSK'S GOVERNMENT – AGNIESZKA KUBLIK IN GW: “Tusk's government now has not only an obligation but also an opportunity to protect us from COVID. An opportunity, because in this way it could demonstrate competence, effectiveness, and decisiveness. And communication skills, as it struggles with communication. Not just on the COVID issue, but in general. Perhaps on the matter of life and death, it will finally wake up and understand that informing about threats, consequences, and prevention is part of honest and effective state management. Learn from others' mistakes, for God's sake.”

-- KRZYSZTOF HETMAN AS POLISH COMMISSIONER TO DIVERT PSL FROM HOŁOWNIA? – SEBASTIAN BIAŁACH ON ONET: “'Donald sounded out his closest circle about whether it was worth backing someone from the Third Way. In this case, it concerns Hetman. He received a negative response, suggesting it's better not to build up an ally,' we hear from Civic Platform. On the other hand, another PO politician says that a nomination for Hetman 'could be the price for supporting the PO candidate for president.' This means that if the PSL received a position as a commissioner in the EU, PO would expect a change in the party's stance on supporting Szymon Hołownia's bid.”
-- SERAFIN AND LISEK ALSO IN THE GAME – BIAŁACH FURTHER ON ONET: “Piotr Serafin, who is currently Poland's ambassador to the European Union, remains in contention. In 2010, he was an undersecretary of state in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and after Janusz Lewandowski took the portfolio of Budget Commissioner, he became head of his cabinet. Donald Tusk also took him to Brussels when he began serving as President of the European Council. He is described as Tusk's right-hand man in Polish European policy.”

-- KACZYŃSKI IS PREPARING FOR MAJOR REORGANIZATION WITHIN HIS PARTY. DEPUTY LEADERS SZYDŁO AND MACIEREWICZ MAY LOSE THEIR POSITIONS – JACEK PRUSINOWSKI IN SE: “Szydło might be demoted, but unlike Macierewicz, she has a considerable group of people within the party who will defend her. Politically, she is weakening, but she can still be strong enough to fend off this attack – we hear from a PiS politician. Changes in the party's board will be made by the Political Council. During the congress planned for the turn of September and October, they will be presented to all activists.”
-- PROMOTION FOR JAKI AND WITEK? – PRUSINOWSKI FURTHER: “If the absorption of Sovereign Poland by Law and Justice occurs, which seems very likely, Patryk Jaki should receive the position of PiS vice-chairman. If, on the other hand, Beata Szydło's opponents succeed, former Sejm Marshal Elżbieta Witek might take her place on the board.”

-- TRZASKOWSKI HAS HURT HIMSELF. PO IS PULLING THEIR HAIR OUT – JACEK GĄDEK IN NEWSWEEK: “The issue of crosses in the Warsaw City Hall has turned out to be a trap from which Rafał Trzaskowski has been unable to escape for months. This is not a trivial problem – it will likely resurface with full force during the presidential campaign. (...) Putting the weapon of the narrative 'Trzaskowski removes crosses' into the hands of the capital's president's competitors was a mistake. Or perhaps even more. Malicious people would be inclined to say it even looked like sabotage.”

-- A SOURCE FROM THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS TELLS OKO.PRESS THAT A CHANGE CONSISTING SOLELY IN ABANDONING THE CONTRIBUTION FROM FIXED ASSETS IS CURRENTLY THE MOST PROBABLE SCENARIO – AGATA SZCZĘŚNIAK IN OKO.PRESS: “Resigning from the contribution on fixed assets does not fulfill the provision of the coalition agreement. It is only one of the elements that need to be changed. We will not agree for this to be the only change in the coming year,' Ewa Szymanowska tells OKO.press. Polska 2050 calculated that eliminating the contribution from fixed assets will make a difference of PLN 1 billion, while Minister Domański promised PLN 4 billion. However, a source from the Council of Ministers tells OKO.press that a change consisting solely of abandoning the contribution on fixed assets is currently the most probable scenario.”
-- IF A CONFEDERATION CANDIDATE TAKES THIRD PLACE IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, NOT THE 3RD WAY, THEIR VOTERS WILL SUPPORT THE PIS CANDIDATE IN THE SECOND ROUND, AND THEN THE RULING COALITION'S CANDIDATE WILL LOSE – SZCZĘŚNIAK FURTHER ON THE NEED FOR HOŁOWNIA'S IMAGE SUCCESS: “Third Way politicians with whom we spoke (both from Polska 2050 and PSL) claim that the third candidate's result is crucial. If it is a Confederation candidate, their voters will support the PiS candidate in the second round. And then the ruling coalition's candidate will lose.”
