POLITICAL STANDOFF: Zdanowska Stands Firm Against Schetyna, PiS Politician in DGP: A Political Center Alongside the Government Offers a Detached Perspective, Wroński: Toruń's Influence is Waning, Szułdrzyński: Kaczyński Won't Forget the Ziobroists Tested H

-- 70% OF PIS VOTERS WANT MORAWIECKI - DGP AND RMF POLL: “The majority points to Mateusz Morawiecki as the best candidate for prime minister: 70% of PiS voters polled by IBRiS for Dziennik Gazeta Prawna and RMF FM predict him. Jarosław Kaczyński is indicated by 23%.”
-- PIS POLITICIAN ON A POLITICAL CENTER ALONGSIDE THE GOVERNMENT FOR A MORE DETACHED PERSPECTIVE: “Our supporters want stability. It's convenient for both the leader and the prime minister. The leader has always argued that the political center should be alongside the government to have a more detached perspective – says a PiS insider. None of the other right-wing politicians gained a significant percentage of votes as a candidate for prime minister.”

-- MICHAŁ SZUŁDRZYŃSKI ON THE PIS LEADER NOT FORGETTING THAT THE ZIOBRISTS TESTED HIS STRENGTH: “However, our information suggests that Kaczyński has already decided that Morawiecki will remain prime minister. To win back voters who voted for parties including PSL, or to win the presidential election, PiS does not need to harden its political message. As a result, the Ziobroists, by attacking Morawiecki, are effectively striking at Kaczyński himself and questioning the political line he decided to adopt after the elections. Furthermore, they are exploiting a situation that resulted from Kaczyński's own miscalculation, underestimating the support for his coalition partners. Regardless of how this game ends, one thing is certain: the PiS leader will not forget that someone tried to indirectly strike at him, testing his political strength and the stability of the power system.”

-- ZDANOWSKA STANDS FIRM AGAINST SCHETYNA - JEDYNKA DZIENNIKA ŁÓDZKIEGO: “It's a time for reckoning in Civic Platform after the lost elections. Hanna Zdanowska opposes Grzegorz Schetyna; the regional spokesperson for Civic Platform in Łódź makes biting comments about the party leader's letter, and Tomasz Zimoch, the top candidate for the Civic Coalition in Łódź, sharply criticizes Krzysztof Piątkowski, the head of the Civic Coalition's campaign staff: 'Without charisma or ideas.'”

-- FATHER RYDZYK'S INFLUENCE IN PIS IS WEAKENING - PAWEŁ WROŃSKI IN GW: “The defeat of Sobecka – one of the first announcers for Radio Maryja, a lady of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, a Member of Parliament since 1997 – is one of the symbols of the decline of the 'Rydzyk faction' within PiS. In Przemyśl, a former prosecutor, but also a regular guest on 'Radio Maryja' and Trwam TV, Stanisław Piotrowicz, lost. He himself claimed to have achieved a good result, but the PiS list from Przemyśl was very strong. He came in ninth place, and eight candidates secured mandates. Now, there's information circulating in the Sejm that Fr. Tadeusz Rydzyk is lobbying for Piotrowicz to still get into the Sejm (one of the PiS MPs preceding him would have to give up his mandate – Wirtualna Polska wrote about this).”

-- NEVER HAS A SIGNIFICANT PARTY FILED SO MANY REQUESTS FOR ANNULMENT - ANDRZEJ STANKIEWICZ: “This is an unprecedented event – never before has any significant party filed so many requests to annul elections. Yesterday, PiS filed six, all concerning the Senate. The ruling camp is playing for a change in election results through judicial proceedings. The aim is to annul Senate elections in districts where PiS candidates came second, losing narrowly – by a few hundred, a few thousand votes – to opposition candidates.”
-- THE ATTEMPT TO ANNUL THE ELECTION CONFIRMS PIS'S FAILURE TO SECURE A COALITION IN THE SENATE - FURTHER FROM STANKIEWICZ:“The attempt to annul the elections also confirms that PiS was not only unable to gain a coalition partner in the Senate (in practice, we're talking about PSL, as no one else is considered), but was not even able to win over two individual senators from any club. Onet journalists have spoken to senators from opposition parties in recent days. All of them, without exception, declared their dislike for PiS, assured of their loyalty, and many vouched for their colleagues from the Senate benches of PO, SLD, and PSL.”

-- FOUR QUITE SIMILAR YEARS - ANDRZEJ LEDER IN CONVERSATION WITH GRZEGORZ SROCZYŃSKI ON GAZETA.PL: “Rather relief. The tone of Kaczyński's speech on election night was more or less: we won, but we lost. He probably realizes that with such a result, he won't be able to implement systemic changes. So it will probably be as it was. A struggle. Four more quite similar years.”
-- A BEARABLE PROSPECT - LEDER FURTHER WITH SROCZYŃSKI: “Bearable. This is essentially an optimistic scenario; others were much worse – for example, PiS emboldened by 50% support. Or even higher. But such an election result would speak very poorly of the democratic imagination of Polish society.”
-- WE ARE HEADING TOWARDS MORE DISTINCT SOCIAL CONFLICTS - LEDER FURTHER: “Perhaps one day we will remember the conflict between PiS and PO as relatively peaceful times. We are moving towards a world of more distinct political conflicts, the emergence of sharp contradictions in the interests of various social groups. This concerns – I repeat – the entire West. These will not be safe times.”
-- LEDER ON HOW NEGLECT OF SOCIAL SERVICES CAUSES STRATIFICATION: “I understand how important 500 plus was and the change in living conditions for large families, but a left-wing or social party must pursue policies that increase social cohesion and aim to equalize differences. This means a policy of common goods, i.e., public services; public healthcare, education, transport, environmental protection, and also the justice system. And this is lacking. On the contrary, public services are degrading, the rich escape to private education and healthcare, and the poor tremble at the thought of getting sick. If we add what is happening in higher education, i.e., reforms leading to the gradual liquidation of small academic centers in the provinces, then we can see a fairly consistent policy that favors the stratification of Polish society.”

-- ŁUKASZ PAWŁOWSKI IN KULTURA LIBERALNA QUOTES A VOTER FROM GAZETA OLSZTYŃSKA: “If PiS isn't there, they'll close the churches,” says a resident of a small, aging, and depopulating village in Warmia, Boleszyn, explaining to a “Gazeta Olsztyńska” journalist why she supports Law and Justice. Do other PiS voters, living in larger cities and often well-educated, think similarly?”
-- IF PIS IS TO LOSE VOTERS, THEY MUST LEARN FROM PIS WHAT THE ALTERNATIVE IS: “PiS offered voters a comprehensive and relatively coherent narrative about Poland: its recent history (things weren't bad, but could have been much better if the elites weren't corrupt); the present (we're giving people what they deserve and building a strong, cohesive state); and the future (we're catching up to Germany, but we don't want to import a moral revolution). This is, of course, an inconsistent narrative, and four years of PiS rule show how many of its promises remain unfulfilled. But it's still more than what the Civic Coalition has offered so far, which still struggles to explain to voters what it truly is. If PiS is to lose some voters, they need to learn only one thing from the opposition – what the alternative is?”

-- WHY SHOULD HIGHWAYS BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN SCHOOLS - MAGDALENA BIEJAT, NEW LEWICA MP IN CONVERSATION WITH KULTURA LIBERALNA: “As successive studies show increasing social stratification, we must consider how to prioritize public spending. Why should highways be more important than schools, public transport, or healthcare? This is also a matter of social cohesion, which is in all of our interests.”
-- PRIDE PARADES MARCH WITH A CONSERVATIVE FAMILY POSTULATE - BIEJAT FURTHER: “I spoke about this throughout the campaign and will repeat it: participants in Pride Parades are marching with a maximally conservative postulate – they want to have a family.”
-- PLATFORMA SHIRKS RESPONSIBILITY INSTEAD OF REPRESENTING VALUES: “Until now, it was Civic Platform, which I would value more if it were able to define its values. Because trying to seduce voters from both the left and the right simultaneously is not working for them. The situation last week, when the Sejm voted on a resolution to 'condemn attacks on Catholics,' perfectly illustrates this. And 130 Civic Platform MPs simply abstained from voting. But 130 politicians who were elected to the Sejm to represent the values of their voters believe that the best way to function in parliament is to shirk responsibility.”
-- SOCIAL SECURITY WITHOUT ABANDONING THE RULE OF LAW - BIEJAT FURTHER: “It is possible for Lewica to create an alternative to PiS and Civic Coalition in four years. We offer social security and values, without having to abandon the rule of law and good state institutions. I care about having people in the Sejm who are responsible for what they do and take their commitments seriously. It may sound banal, but I take the challenges we face – the crisis of democracy and the climate crisis – very seriously.”
