Political Week Ahead: Possible Tusk Visit to Kyiv, Government on Defence Readiness, Trzaskowski and Nawrocki on the Campaign Trail, Official Election Announcement

One of the more significant events of the upcoming week in politics will be the official announcement of the presidential elections by the Marshal of the Sejm, which in practice will mark the formal start of the campaign. Rafał Trzaskowski and Karol Nawrocki will return to the campaign trail in the coming days, and the government will also address a regulation concerning the state's defence readiness.

Trzaskowski and Nawrocki on the Campaign Trail. PiS-backed presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki returns to the campaign trail at the beginning of the week. On Monday, he will be in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, where he will visit, among other places, volunteer fire stations and meet with local government officials, foresters, and residents. We hear that KO candidate Rafał Trzaskowski also embarks on his campaign trail on Wednesday.

New Minister of Science. As announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, on Monday, he and Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty are expected to present a candidate for the position of Minister of Science and Higher Education, thus replacing Dariusz Wieczorek.

Possible Tusk Visit to Kyiv. A month ago, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that he would travel to Ukraine at the beginning of the year. Subsequently, he added, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to visit Poland. The date of the Prime Minister's trip has not been confirmed, but this week's government session has been moved from Tuesday to Wednesday at 4 PM, which could indicate the Prime Minister's travel plans.

Interrogations before the Parliamentary Committee. On Monday, the Pegasus parliamentary inquiry committee will interrogate – during closed sessions – former CBA head Ernest Bejda and former deputy CBA head Grzegorz Ocieczek.

Committee on Świrski. On Tuesday, the Sejm's constitutional accountability committee will hear witnesses in a closed session, summoned in connection with the preliminary motion to bring the head of KRRiT, Maciej Świrski, to constitutional accountability before the State Tribunal.

Government on State Defence Readiness. At its Wednesday session, the government will consider a draft regulation concerning the state's defence readiness, as well as a draft amendment to the Tax Ordinance.

Official Election Announcement. The presidential elections will take place on May 18th. The Marshal of the Sejm announced the voting date last week, but the campaign will formally begin upon the publication of the decree concerning the ordering of the presidential elections. As announced, it is scheduled to be issued on Wednesday.

Monetary Policy Council Session. On Wednesday and Thursday, the Monetary Policy Council will hold its session, during which it is likely to decide to maintain interest rates at their current level, culminating in a press conference by NBP President Adam Glapiński.
