Yesterday's State of Play
-- IF KAROL NAWROCKI STRIPS THE ORDER OF THE WHITE EAGLE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF UKRAINE, DONALD TUSK WILL NOT OBSTRUCT – “WYBORCZA” LEARNS FROM SOURCES CLOSE TO THE PRIME MINISTER – WOJCIECH CZUCHNOWSKI IN GW: “From conversations we've had within the Prime Minister's chancellery circle, it emerges that Tusk will not oppose Nawrocki if he ultimately revokes the White Eagle from Zelensky. – [Tusk] will not stand against the majority opinion, and moreover, he shares a similar view [on the UPA]. At best, we can expect [from Tusk] a comment that Zelensky was not awarded for the UPA, but for his fight against Russia – a minister in the Prime Minister's Chancellery tells 'Wyborcza'. – But above all, [Tusk] will not participate in the decision-making process on this matter. If a signature is needed, he will sign it, but nothing more – predicts the same informant”.

-- IN KRAKOW, CIVIC COALITION (KO) MAY NOMINATE A PROFESSOR – ŁUKASZ SZPYRKA IN INTERIA: “Within Civic Coalition, a scenario of utilizing such an experimental option is being seriously considered. The first name that comes up is Rafał Sonik, a Krakow native, athlete, Dakar Rally winner, entrepreneur, and long-time participant in social and charitable initiatives. Sonik is from a somewhat different background, but in business, he has proven to be a good steward capable of managing significant assets. The second name is Prof. Tomasz Grodzicki, until recently the rector of the Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University. This would be a typical 'professorial' candidacy. Grodzicki has been associated with Krakow since childhood. He is very well-known in the city, and moreover, he is a respected geriatrician and internist. Choosing Grodzicki would be an unexpected move for KO, but understandable from the perspective of a Krakow voter.”

-- A LOCAL KO ACTIVIST IN KRAKOW ADMITS MOODS ARE "MINOR" – MAGDALENA KURSA IN GW: “By dissolving the party structures in Lesser Poland, Donald Tusk took responsibility for what will happen in Krakow. I hope that, like a good chess player, he has five moves ahead – says a local KO activist, admitting that the mood is 'minor.'”
-- EITHER HE WILL PROPOSE SOMEONE WHO WILL WIN HERE, OR WE WILL LOSE AND A WAVE WILL START THAT COULD HURT US SIGNIFICANTLY ON A NATIONAL SCALE – A LONG-TIME POLITICIAN OF THE KRAKOW CIVIC COALITION TELLS “WYBORCZA” – CONTINUES KURSA IN GW: “I've been a member of Platform [Civic Platform] for almost 20 years, and I feel we are at the biggest turning point now. The situation in Krakow is a test of Tusk's leadership. Either he will propose someone who will win here, or we will lose, and a wave will start that could hurt us significantly on a national scale,” says a long-time politician of the Krakow Civic Coalition to 'Wyborcza'.
-- WE CANNOT NOMINATE A PROFESSOR – CONTINUES KURSA IN GW: “The councilor assesses: We already know that PiS has nominated Michał Drewnicki, who is a councilor and thus knows the city reasonably well. Gibała is in a similar position. We cannot nominate a professor who, although has management experience, it's not in city governance.”
-- IS KRAKOW READY FOR A FEMALE PRESIDENT? – CONTINUES KURSA IN GW: “– If the party nominates her, we will fight tooth and nail to help her, but in my opinion, she is not in the championship league. She hasn't participated in campaigns of this type so far, and this is not the time for experiments. Besides, I don't know if Krakow is ready for a female president,” says a long-time KO activist.
-- RASIU IS BEING MENTIONED – CONTINUES KURSA IN GW: “Ireneusz Rasiu is also mentioned as a PSL candidate. As you can see, it's already quite crowded at the start. Łukasz Gibała will certainly join, who is delaying the official announcement of his candidacy, likely planning a spectacular reveal while showcasing his future team – he has already competed for the mayorship of Krakow three times, and recently lost narrowly to Miszalski.”

-- THE PROBLEM IS THE QUALITY OF WORK OF THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT, WHICH DOES NOT FULFILL ITS PROMISES AND OFTEN PREPARES BAD LAWS OR USES THE SO-CALLED "INCLUSION METHOD" – OFTEN ADDS UNRELATED BAD SOLUTIONS TO GOOD REGULATIONS – PAWEŁ SZEFERNAKER IN AN INTERVIEW WITH KAMILA BARANOWSKA IN INTERIA: “When Poles voted for Karol Nawrocki a year ago, they did not want a president who would sign everything for Donald Tusk. If they had wanted such a president, they would have chosen Rafał Trzaskowski. Poles elected President Nawrocki so that the Civic Platform's arrangement would not be finalized, and so that there would be someone who safeguards the interests of citizens. The President is doing exactly that. The quality of work of the current government is also a problem, as it does not fulfill its promises and often prepares bad laws or uses the so-called 'inclusion method' – it often adds unrelated bad solutions, harmful to Poland, to good regulations.”
-- NO ONE BELIEVED ME THEN IN JULY – SZEFERNAKER CONTINUES TO BARANOWSKA: “I remember last July when I said that the President, if there is no cooperation between the government and him, or if bad legislative projects reach him, will take actions that presidents have not taken before, using the tools he has as President. No one believed me then.”
-- THE PRESIDENT IS DETERMINED, PERHAPS MORE THAN PREVIOUS PRESIDENTS – SZEFERNAKER CONTINUES IN INTERIA: “We know that in Poland, the system enshrined in the Constitution does not grant as many tools as a presidential system, but the President is certainly determined to use – perhaps more than previous presidents – the ones that are available.”
-- THE UKRAINIAN SIDE IS DOING A LOT TO WEAKEN RELATIONS TODAY – SZEFERNAKER FURTHER IN INTERIA: “Let's remember that the first years of the war in Ukraine were a completely different time. The attitude of Poles was different, as was the attitude of Ukrainian politicians. Over time, there has been a lack of actions from the Ukrainian side that would strengthen our relations. Instead, the Ukrainian side is doing a lot today to weaken these relations. This is a very short-sighted action. I consider the President's decision on this matter to be completely natural and obvious.”
