Today's State of Play

STATE OF PLAY: Gruszczyński in GW: Leaving Szostakowski in his current position will be incomprehensible, Sroczyński: Why is PO compromising itself so much?

-- LET'S DRINK TO MISTAKES, OR THE FIVE SINS OF THE CIVIC COALITION REGARDING THE NIGHTTIME ALCOHOL BAN - ARKADIUSZ GRUSZCZYŃSKI IN GW: “The first mistake of the Civic Coalition regarding the nighttime alcohol ban in Warsaw. The voice of the residents was ignored. The second mistake of the Civic Coalition. Party activists were used to suppress criticism. The third mistake of the Civic Coalition. Szostakowski insulted Warsaw residents. The fourth mistake of the Civic Coalition. The left was tried to be drowned at all costs.”

-- IT'S TIME TO SAY IT: LEAVING JAROSŁAW SZOSTAKOWSKI IN HIS CURRENT POSITION WILL BE INCOMPREHENSIBLE TO RESIDENTS AND CIVIC COALITION VOTERS - GRUSZCZYŃSKI WRITES IN GW: “The problem for a party that wants to open up to the needs of the residents of the most liberal city in Poland is Szostakowski's past activities. He was the one who led to the dismissal of a politician from the position of Vice-Chairperson of the Warsaw City Council, a politician who criticized the Civic Coalition for... opposing the nighttime alcohol ban. Szostakowski is also against limiting car traffic in the city center, even though these are solutions adopted by other Western capitals. And as our journalist Michał Wojtczuk recalled, Szostakowski also has a history of cutting off discussions during Warsaw City Council sessions. It's time to say it: leaving Jarosław Szostakowski in his current position will be incomprehensible to the residents and voters of the Civic Coalition. It is proof of the excessive influence of the ruling party in Warsaw.”

-- A RIVER OF VODKA STILL UNTAPPED. TRZASKOWSKI HUMILIATED - MAREK KĘSKRAWIEC IN TYGODNIK POWSZECHNY: “On this occasion, we learned that President Rafał Trzaskowski not only grew a mustache in recent days but also ceased to be the main decision-maker in the capital.”

-- THIS IS ALREADY TOO FAR A PERSPECTIVE FOR THE POLITICIANS OF "SMILING POLAND" - KĘSKRAWIEC CONTINUES IN TP: “We live in a country where alcohol is available at every step, from which the state derives enormous profits. The costs of treating alcoholics and the long-term social consequences (devastating the lives of entire families) are much greater, but this is already too far a perspective for the politicians of "Smiling Poland.”

-- WHY IS PO COMPROMISING ITSELF SO MUCH - GRZEGORZ SROCZYŃSKI IN GAZETA.PL: “Since the aforementioned "Kierwa" has no idea about modern urban development policy and doesn't care about it, the councilors can also slack off, govern poorly or carelessly in their districts, do stupid things, and most importantly, they can understand nothing and read nothing - this is how the Civic Platform councilors appeared to us during Thursday's debate on limiting nighttime alcohol sales. The arguments "there will be dens" and "there is no research proving it will help" are so stupid and detached that - forgive me - a village woman knows more from subscribing to "Świat Krzyżówek" about current urban development trends than our representatives of the patriciate in the Capital City of Warsaw Council.”

-- NOW THE PLATFORM'S FACTIONAL FIGHTS HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THE SIGHT OF ALL OF POLAND, IN THE SIGHT OF TUSK AND THE PARTY RANKS - SROCZYŃSKI CONTINUES IN GAZETA.PL: “All of this together sets new standards of political rudeness, especially since it didn't happen in the privacy of offices, where Minister Kierwiński and Councilor Szostakowski could have conspired against "Rainbow Rafałek" over a glass of wine and bet on "our tough Radek," which - apart from a few philatelist journalists - interested no one. Now the Platform's factional fights have taken place in the eyes of all of Poland, in the eyes of Tusk and the party ranks.”

-- BOOMER DOGMAS - GALOPUJĄCY MAJOR IN POLITICAL CRITIQUE: “Prohibition doesn't work, bans don't help – this is the first dogma of liberal boomerism. Therefore, we shouldn't ban alcohol sales because it didn't work in the USA and it didn't work in Russia either. And the Ku Klux Klan invented it – said Councilor Szostakowski from the Civic Platform. The problem is that it's the exact opposite.”

-- WIPLER ON THE NATIONWIDE BAN ON NIGHTTIME ALCOHOL SALES: I WON'T VOTE FOR IT, WE ARE AGAINST BANS - 300LIVEhttps://300polityka.pl/pl/live

-- IN THE PRIORITIES OF THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS, PRESENTED BY THE GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON, THERE IS NO MENTION OF MINORITY RIGHTS OR COMBATING XENOPHOBIA - MAREK BEYLIN IN GW: “We have almost stopped publicly discussing the rights of women, LGBT+ people, partnership unions, the rights of refugees, and the violation of these rights by state services. In the priorities of the government's policy for the next two years, presented by the government spokesperson, there is no mention of minority rights or combating xenophobia, not even that directed against the Ukrainian community in Poland. There is also no word about counteracting the climate catastrophe, although its neglect directly affects younger generations, including their right to a bearable existence.”

-- I ALREADY SEE THAT MANY PERSONS WHO WERE PUBLICLY ACTIVE UNTIL NOW ARE WITHDRAWING FROM ACTIVITY - BEYLIN CONTINUES IN GW: “This will not be easy. I already see that many people who were publicly active until now are withdrawing from activity. I understand this fatigue and lack of faith. However, democratic values will survive only if we loudly invoke them. We, meaning each and every one of us. Without this, they will gradually be forgotten, losing their usefulness in the eyes of the majority. Let's not allow that.”

-- THE POLISH IDYLL LASTED OVER THREE DECADES, BUT IT IS ENDING - WITOLD GADOMSKI IN GW: “The time of wartime threats and belt-tightening is coming, and politicians are behaving as if they still have mountains of money to hand out. (...) For now, financial markets are giving Poland a vote of confidence, but the lowering of Poland's long-term rating outlook by Fitch and Moody's agencies indicates that their patience is running out.”

-- BLACK CLOUDS HAVE BEEN GATHERING OVER OUR COUNTRY'S FINANCES FOR A LONG TIME. THE FIRST RUMBLINGS OF THE APPROACHING STORM CAN ALREADY BE HEARD - PIOTR SKWIROWSKI IN RZ: “The decisions of rating agencies are therefore a bad signal for us. Sooner or later, belt-tightening awaits us, and this is never pleasant because it means the state will reach deeper into our pockets. The need to quickly lower the deficit may also significantly slow down the economy. It's hardly worth mentioning the additional scaring of investors. And here you are, a person, to be optimistic.”

-- IN THE CURRENT SITUATION, ADDITIONAL BILLIONS OF ZLOTYS FOR DEBT REPAYMENT CAN ONLY MEAN ONE THING: CUTS IN OTHER STATE EXPENDITURES - MAREK RABIJ IN TYGODNIK POWSZECHNY: “However, rising costs of servicing Polish debt may be a problem. Currently, they consume 11.5% of the Polish state's revenue, and a potential rating downgrade will increase them further. This happened, for example, in 2016, when S&P cut Poland's rating from A- to BBB+. In just a few days, Poland had to increase the interest rate on its bonds by 0.2 percentage points. In the current situation, additional billions of zlotys for debt repayment will likely mean only one thing: cuts in other state expenditures.”
