— INTERVIEW FROM 2021 – BARBARA NOWACKA, WHEN ASKED BY DONATA SUBBOTKO HOW SHE DEALT WITH THE GRIEF AFTER SMOLENSK AND HER MOTHER’S DEATH: “Mine never exploded, and yet I torment myself every day, ask my children. I smoothed them over. First, I had to deal with giving birth. I couldn’t afford to despair, to avoid contractions. I gave birth to Zośka – her middle name is Izabela – on Mother’s Day. Symbolic, because I was left without a mother, and here was my daughter. Then I had to focus on the good things, so that everyone around was somewhat as they were before. My father is an introvert. I think he grieved the loss for a long time, especially since he was left alone at home, with mother’s belongings. My sister was also very close to her mother, she recovered, although she needed help. I didn’t. I had one meeting with a psychologist, which they arranged for us when we went to collect the items from the crash. A young girl came, nice, and scared herself. When she asked if she could help me with anything, I asked her – according to what I felt – to tell me where the restroom was. When you have a large belly in the ninth month, that’s the most interesting thing. I was most worried about my son, because he knew something bad had happened. You can’t tell a three-year-old that grandma’s plane crashed. We said that an accident happened, grandma died, but he didn’t understand what that meant. He asked when she would come again.”
