STATE OF PLAY: Godusławski: JKB is back in the game, Gursztyn: Why Tusk isn't trying to be nice, Szymczak on Oko: Belt-tightening leads to the right-wing's resurgence
-- PAWLAK: TUSK INTIMIDATES COALITION PARTNERS. LEADERS' MEETINGS ARE NEEDED SO THE COALITION DOESN'T ERODE - 300LIVE: https://300polityka.pl/live/2024/06/24/
-- IT'S BECOME NERVOUS IN STATE-OWNED COMPANIES - BARTEK GODUSŁAWSKI IN BUSINESS INSIDER: “The change in the supervisory position of State Treasury companies has fueled speculation about whether all presidents and board members can sleep soundly. According to our sources, particular concern has arisen in entities from the financial sector. - The new minister is unlikely to carry out a revolution, as he places great importance on corporate governance. However, this does not mean there will be no changes in companies, only that they will not be chaotic and abrupt moves – says our informant close to the government.”
-- OUR SOURCES SAY THERE ARE MANY SIGNS THAT JAN KRZYSZTOF BIELECKI IS BACK IN THE GAME - GODUSŁAWSKI FURTHER IN BI: “- Everything hinged on the fact that Bielecki, even before PO lost power, became the head of the Patrons Council at the consulting firm EY. This is a typically mentoring position for top-level managers, it does not have a business character, meaning it does not involve bringing clients to the company. However, EY worked as an advisor, among others, for Orlen on the merger with Lotos, and the Tusk team heavily criticized this transaction during the campaign and promised to hold Obajtek accountable for it – a person from the government tells us, pointing out that this is how the narrative was built that Bielecki, working for an international company, collaborated with the PiS team and was one of the beneficiaries of Jarosław Kaczyński's party's rule. This was supposed to cut him off from influence, including on personnel selection for state-owned companies after the elections. Our sources claim there are many signs that Jan Krzysztof Bielecki is back in the game. In their opinion, personnel movements in companies from the broadly defined financial sector in the coming months could confirm this.”

-- AS IT TURNS OUT, KIERWIŃSKI DOES NOT INTEND TO RESIGN FROM NATIONAL POSITIONS - ARKADIUSZ GRUSZCZYŃSKI AND MICHAŁ WOJCZUK IN GW: “- Regarding my leadership in Warsaw PO, nothing will change for now. I am not moving to Brussels permanently. I will continue to live in Warsaw. I take my mandate as a Member of the European Parliament very seriously, but working in the European Parliament is a few days a week. This still leaves a lot of time for action in Warsaw, which is my constituency. I dedicate days outside the EP to working in Warsaw and in the field – Kierwiński tells us. He convinces: - The position of Minister of the Interior was much more absorbing, and I managed to reconcile it effectively with my party duties. Those who know me know how many hours a week I work.”
-- ON WIELICHOWSKA'S CANDIDACY - GRUSZCZYŃSKI AND WOJCZUK FURTHER IN GW: “We also hear another name: reportedly, MP Monika Wielichowska, who was responsible for the schedule of meetings with voters during the parliamentary election campaign, was considered for this position. Tusk values her. Other names are also in circulation, there is talk of Jan Grabiec's ambitions. But he already holds several positions: he is an MP, head of the Masovian structures, and head of the Prime Minister's Chancellery.”
-- KIERWIŃSKI REACTS SHARPLY TO SUGGESTIONS OF RESIGNATION FROM POSITIONS. ONE MP STATES BLUNTLY: - KIERWIŃSKI GOES AROUND THE PARTY SAYING WE BETRAYED HIM - WRITE THE AUTHORS OF GW: “According to our sources, Kierwiński is reacting sharply to suggestions of resignation from positions. One MP states bluntly: - Kierwiński goes around the party saying we betrayed him, he claims he won't give up any party positions willingly. No one is stepping forward, people are lying low, everyone is waiting for the move of the boss, who is observing all this and wondering what to do – he recounts.”

-- THE RULING COALITION IS LOSING BY ALLOWING PIȘ TO LIE. SIMPLY SHOW THE FILM! - WOJCIECH CZUCHNOWSKI IN GW: “Recordings from the border incident, after which the Gendarmerie detained soldiers, should be made public. Although it will not affect PiS's false narrative, there is no longer any sense in keeping them a secret. (...) There are no obstacles for the prosecutor's office to officially show the recordings from March 25th. Kaczyński will not stop lying because of this, but we all deserve the truth in this matter.”

-- BY ANNOUNCING HE IS STAYING IN WARSAW, FOREIGN MINISTER RADOSŁAW SIKORSKI HAS NOT ONLY SHOWN HE HAS SHAKEN OFF WESTERN COMPLEXES BUT, UNLIKE PRIME MINISTER DONALD TUSK IN 2014, UNDERSTANDS WHERE REAL POWER LIES IN THE EUROPEAN UNION - JĘDRZEJ BIELECKI IN RZ.

-- THE EU IS IMPOSING A SECURITY STRAIGHTJACKET ON POLISH FINANCES. TOO LOOSE - WITOLD GADOMSKI IN GW: “The loosening of EU fiscal rules is convenient for governments, including the Polish government. Politicians are prone to procrastination, i.e., postponing difficult decisions. "We will fix the finances someday, but why rush?" they say. The consequences of procrastination can be dangerous because debt costs money. In two years, the costs of servicing debt in the entire public finance sector have increased 2.5-fold, from about PLN 30 billion to PLN 79 billion. The average interest on debt in 2023 increased to 4.7%. In this regard, along with Romania, we are in third place in the entire European Union.”
-- THERE WAS SOME LOGIC TO IT, NEVERTHELESS, THE GOVERNMENT MUST NOW FACE ITS CONSEQUENCES - GADOMSKI FURTHER IN GW: “Before the elections, I spoke with a very important PO politician, asking him why he was promising things for which there was no money in the state treasury. Wasn't he afraid that when his party came to power, it would face a financial crisis? He answered me that he saw no other way to win the elections, and if they lost, PiS would mess up the finances even more. There was some logic to it, nevertheless, the government must now face its consequences.”

-- POLAND DOES NOT HAVE TO FEAR FINANCIAL PENALTIES, AND "BELT-TIGHTENING" IS A PATH TO THE EXTREME RIGHT-WING'S GROWING SUPPORT - JAKUB SZYMCZAK IN OKO.PRESS: “it gives hope for abandoning those promises that are indeed dangerous for public finances and were never fully thought through. Such as raising the tax-exempt amount from PLN 30,000 to PLN 60,000. This would be a transfer primarily to high earners, costing the state about PLN 50 billion annually. So far, Finance Minister Andrzej Domański has repeated that the government wants to implement this promise, but can only do so from 2025. Domański has repeatedly stated that Prime Minister Tusk obliged him to implement it. This would mean losing a huge amount of tax revenue year after year. As we have written, it is unlikely that the government will cut existing expenditures now - 800+ is almost certainly off the table, and certainly no one will question the need for rearmament. However, it is worth observing how the government and the Ministry of Finance will talk about new expenditures and unfulfilled promises. The EC's decision is paradoxically both a problem and a lifebuoy. Used wisely - for example, to abandon the promise of a PLN 60,000 tax-exempt amount - it can benefit the government and citizens. However, if it is used to question necessary social expenditures, the rescue will be only apparent, and the political consequences could be fatal.”

-- WHAT WOULD BE PUTIN'S DEFEAT? REMOVING EVEN ONE ISSUE - THE CRISIS AT THE POLISH-BELARUSSIAN BORDER - FROM THE PARTY AND IDEOLOGICAL CONFLICT DIVIDING POLES - CEZARY MICHALSKI IN INTERIA: “What would be Putin's defeat? Removing even one issue - the crisis at the Polish-Belarusian border - from the party and ideological conflict dividing Poles. A round table gathering representatives of the government, opposition, president, and even activists working on the Polish-Belarusian border. Even if such a round table did not bring concrete solutions (I'm not that stupid), it could lower emotions (or maybe I am stupid after all?), and also serve for more precise information to Poles about the scale and seriousness of the crisis. This would be a real defeat for Putin, possibly leading to a reduction in migratory pressure on our eastern border. Everything that is happening today in Polish politics and media only encourages Putin to intensify this pressure.”

-- BITTER AND TIRED OF LIFE, INCREASINGLY AUTOCRATIC TUSK HAS NO DESIRE TO CONVINCE POLES TO HIMSELF. HE IS NOT TRYING TO BE NICE, TO BE PERCEIVED AS A PLEASANT PERSON – SOMETHING HE CARED A LOT ABOUT IN THE YEARS 2007-2014. NOW HE WILL SCARE THEM - PIOTR GURSZTYN ON WPOLITYCE.PL: “Donald Tusk's government cannot boast any economic indicator better than during PiS's time. Let's forget about growing prosperity. Lean years are coming, and it's not apparent that the authorities are concerned about this. (...) Tusk has changed the rules of the game. He will not try to convince Poles that they will live better and that he will ensure it for them. He will convince them that thanks to him, they will not live much worse. Yes, things are bad, prices are rising, fees are increasing, but if Tusk is gone, chaos will ensue. That will be the message. He has the tools for this. Dominance in the media, support of elites, and finally, the entire apparatus of coercion, with the prosecutor's office and pacified courts at the forefront. Bitter and tired of life, increasingly autocratic Tusk has no desire to convince Poles to himself. He is not trying to be nice, to be perceived as a pleasant person – something he cared a lot about in the years 2007-2014. Now he will scare them, order the prosecutor's office to make arrests, and the courts to extend them.”

-- I WOULD LIKE THE SCHOOL UNDER THE DOMINION OF CIVIC COALITION TO EDUCATE DIFFERENTLY. AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHY I WOULD LEAVE RYMKIEWICZ - EVEN THE SMOLENSK ONE - JAKUB MAJMUREK IN KRYTYKA POLITYCZNA: “The school should educate the ability to read texts with which we radically disagree, to place them in their historical context. It should prepare for polemical reading, but also marked by intellectual curiosity. It should sensitize students that great writers also make mistakes, and sometimes say nonsensical things. Czarnek's school was structurally incapable of such education. Students were supposed to listen on bended knees to revealed truths flowing from the pages of voices sanctified by their belonging to the national canon. I would like the school under the dominion of the democratic coalition to educate differently. And that is precisely why I would leave Rymkiewicz - even the Smolensk one.”
