-- HANNA KRALL, IN A CAPTIVATING INTERVIEW WITH ANNA GOC ABOUT HER LATEST BOOK IN TYGODNIK POWSZECHNY, RECALLS A SITUATION WHERE SHE MET ANDRZEJ DUDA (TP issue of September 14): "Do you know that I meet President Andrzej Duda every year at Marek Edelman's? I've been there three or four times. I always go on April 19th, at 12:00 PM. We always went to the monument with Marek Edelman at 12:00 PM, so now I go to Marek. And President Duda comes. Without an entourage, with a modest bouquet."
-- KRALL ON FAITH - FRAGMENT FROM GOC'S INTERVIEW: "Since Krzysztof Kieślowski asked: 'Do you, Hania, believe in God?', has anyone else asked you this question?
- My answer then was spontaneous.
We were sitting on loungers in our garden, working on a dialogue for one of the episodes of "Dekalog". And I don't remember, perhaps Janda asked Bardini if he believed in God, and Bardini said: 'I believe.' 'You know, that's too simple an answer for Bardini, for someone with Bardini's face,' I told Kieślowski. He asked me what I would answer. No one had asked me that before, so Kieślowski, quite seriously: 'Do you, Hania, believe in God?'
- You said then that God believes in you.
- Since He entrusts all these stories to me, I suppose so.
Father Tadeusz Wojdat recounted this conversation during a sermon at the church in Ursynów. I thought I would faint from shock; the church was full of people, and Father Wojdat said: 'Krzysztof Kieślowski – so that the whole, large church could hear – once asked Hanna Krall if she believed in God, to which Hanna replied that God believes in her.' The entire sermon was then dedicated to the idea that God believes in us. But the pretext was our conversation.
So, God believes in me, but I don't know if He isn't disappointed. If I haven't disappointed Him. Probably so.
- I wonder what you would answer to that question now?
- I would say that perhaps that's why I survived the war. But please don't write this, as it would be too many confessions."

-- IGOR ZALEWSKI IN A CAPTIVATING STATEMENT ABOUT HIS COVID-19 INFECTION - IN AN INTERVIEW WITH TVP.INFO: "Although the illness is behind me, I am surprised by how long the recovery process takes. I am still very far from my usual form and fitness before the illness. I'm still barely breathing, tripping over my own feet, I have sudden bouts of exhaustion when I have to sit down immediately."
-- THE VIRUS REALLY TOOK A TOLL ON ME - ZALEWSKI CONTINUES: "What would I say to COVID skeptics? I do not doubt the existence of COVID-19. I am living proof that this virus exists. I am not the oldest person among those infected, even though I am fifty years old, and yet the virus has really taken a toll on me. We also have further evidence that young people can also be its victims – including fatal ones. So I absolutely would not underestimate it."

-- PRIME MINISTER MORAWIECKI, RESPONDING TO MICHAŁ KARNOWSKI'S QUESTION ABOUT A GERMAN POLITICIAN'S STATEMENT ON STARVATION: "These are reprehensible words that should never have been uttered by a German vice-chairwoman of the European Parliament. I will say it directly: this is a diplomatic scandal that should not have happened. It must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Germany should remember the hunger, genocide, and tragedies for which they are responsible. I lack the words to condemn such a statement. I emphasize: Hungary or Poland have the same rights in the European Union as Germany or France."
-- WE CAN OFFER BELARUS A SUBSTANTIAL PACKAGE - MORAWIECKI ON THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL DECISION: "Immediately after the summit, I also had a very interesting conversation with Oliver Varhelyi, the Hungarian Commissioner responsible for neighborhood, who manages a significant budget over the next seven years. From this conversation, it follows that we can offer Belarus a substantial package for cooperation, also within the existing EU mechanisms. I would therefore like to encourage Belarusian forces to engage in the process of democratization. Because, of course, this plan is not a plan for Mr. Aleksander Lukashenko, who is not recognized by any EU country, but it is a plan for free Belarusians; its proper addressee is the Belarusian people."

-- IF SOMEONE BUILDS POLITICAL CAPITAL ON THE LOWEST AND MOST TOXIC EMOTIONS, THEY SHOULD NOT BE SURPRISED WHEN THAT METICULOUSLY BUILT SPIN DOCTOR'S BOMB EXPLODES IN THEIR HANDS - SZCZEPAN TWARDOCH ON PiS AND LGBT - writes on FB: "We know well from Jonathan Haidt that politics is a matter of emotions, not reason, but when someone decides to build their political capital on the lowest and most toxic emotions, resulting in the genuine suffering of a large group of people, they should not be surprised when that meticulously built spin doctor's bomb explodes in their hands. It would even be amusing to observe how a team whose flagship slogan was to care for "Poland's good name in the world" inflicts another image catastrophe on Poland (IPN, Israel, USA, remember?), another diplomatic humiliation on a scale not seen here for perhaps 40 years, when, I remind you, Jaruzelski sent tanks into the streets. It would even be amusing to observe how this same team gets slapped again by Madam Ambassador Mosbacher, whose diplomatic style seems tailor-made for these geniuses, it would even be amusing to watch the minister in charge of fighting the leftist agenda stumble over his own shoelaces – because it's a certainty, remember how that mustachioed ace from PFN fought for Poland's good name and Hollywood films about the Winged Hussars for millions, and what came of it. So it would even be amusing if it didn't somehow concern and affect all of us. Their catastrophes are, unfortunately, our catastrophes, but even that is not the worst part."
-- THE MOST TRAGIC THING IS THAT THIS CATASTROPHIC POLICY IS BEING CONDUCTED BY A TEAM EFFECTIVELY SOLVING ISSUES THAT HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED FOR 20 YEARS - TWARDOCH CONTINUES: "The worst, the most tragic thing in Polish politics in recent years, and in the literal sense of the word 'tragedy,' is that this catastrophic policy is being conducted by a team effectively solving issues that have been neglected for twenty years and cast a shadow on the moral order of Polish politics. No one else has effectively resolved issues of social benefits, raising the minimum wage and hourly rate, or, most recently, the law ending wild restitution. This is tragic because these are not just economic issues; they are existential issues, fundamentally affecting broad masses of people, their lives. These matters are no less important than the issue of basic human rights, which LGBT individuals cannot obtain in Poland. It is a tragedy because PiS will eventually face defeat, as it is clear to the naked eye how this edifice is crumbling at its foundations. Then, I fear – and the only significant opposition only reinforces my fears – that these social, and therefore existential, issues will be the first to be sacrificed on the altar of tribal warfare. And what can LGBT individuals expect from the same opposition? At best, indifference and neglect. Mike Urbaniak recently wrote about how the opposition looks from the perspective of LGBT."
-- TWARDOCH ON ZONES AND CZARNEK AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF A FILM ABOUT KADYROV: "Speaking of how LGBT rights issues can look nearby, I recommend the documentary film "Welcome to Chechnya" by Davide France, available online on the occasion of the Docs Against Gravity festival. And no, what is happening in Poland cannot be compared to what is happening in Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia, or even in Moscow, but Czarnek's nonsense, the homophobic election campaign, and the zones free from 'LGBT ideology' place themselves somewhere on a spectrum, stretching between the democratic-liberal norm and concentration camps, where Kadyrov's men torture and murder gay people. Which end of this spectrum are we closer to? I don't know. I do know, however, that we shouldn't be on it at all."

-- MICHAŁ SZUŁDRZYŃSKI RECONSTRUCTS ANXIETIES SURROUNDING LGBT AS A HYBRID WAR - TO DIVIDE POLES, TO SOLIDIFY THE IMAGE OF HOMOPHOBIC BIGOTS IN THE WEST - writes in RZ: "Could similar behind-the-scenes actions by foreign propaganda specialists provoke similar emotions in Poland? There are no racial tensions in Poland, but there is a fear of Islamic refugees from the South and East. There are also strong emotions related to the situation of the LGBT community. If I wanted to start an information war, I would try to create as much division around these issues in society as possible. I would promote provocations from LGBT activists aimed at traditional values, I would deploy an army of bots to amplify right-wing reactions to these provocations, or spread foolish statements by right-wing politicians about LGBT people. How many goals could be achieved in this way – divide Poles, solidify the image of homophobic bigots in the West."
-- TRUMP HAS VIEWS CALLED LIBERAL IN POLAND, POLISH RIGHT-WINGERS LIVE IN DREAMS - TOMASZ TERLIKOWSKI IN RZ: "Not that the tone and style of the ambassador's statements, who patronizingly lectures us on how to eat with a knife and fork, don't irritate me, but what really amused and saddened me was something else: the complete lack of political realism in Polish public opinion, and living in dreams, not to say outright media simulacra, instead of real political figures and situations. And the reactions indicated that Polish conservatives, or right-wingers more broadly, truly believe that the US ambassador in the matter of LGBT demands is solely representing herself, because Donald Trump is a decent conservative, and as soon as he finds out what she's saying, he'll recall her immediately. And if he hasn't done so yet, it's probably because some terrible lobby is preventing him. In reality, on the issue of LGBTQ+ demands, Donald Trump, even if he is slightly more cautious than Joe Biden (not to mention other Democrats), generally holds views considered liberal in Poland. US embassies celebrated gay pride months during his presidency, and he himself is promoted by some LGBTQ+ activists as the most pro-gay president in US history. And there is no indication that he is just pretending to have these views. They are simply his."
-- UNEQUAL TREATMENT OF THOSE THE WORLD DEFENDS MOST NOW IS A LACK OF POLITICAL REALISM - TERLIKOWSKI CONTINUES: "If anyone truly believes that in matters of defending the current model of family in Poland or opposing so-called marital equality, they can seek help from Trump, they will simply be disappointed. It is also worth realizing that in this matter in Europe, we can only count on the Intermarium countries (and not all of them), and start building a real strategy for the common defense of values close to us. And finally, because this is also important – if one wants to pursue politics against everyone, one should not provoke the stronger, nor make oneself a target of attacks through mistakes or simple unequal treatment of those whom the world now defends the most. These are the basics of political realism."

-- IS KACZYŃSKI REVEALING THAT HIS CAPABILITIES ARE NOT UNLIMITED? - PIOTR ZAREMBA IN RZ: "But after thinking about it, I retract my statement about the Leader. Because the fact that Ziobro was not punished, that he received practically everything he was supposed to receive already in the coalition negotiations before the row, completely dispels the impression of Kaczyński's victory. The patriarch unleashed an atomic war only to ultimately destroy nothing. Even the deputy minister from Solidarna Polska, Janusz Kowalski, is to remain in his position. And he had just provoked Kaczyński by calling Prime Minister Morawiecki a traitor – during the Brussels negotiations on the budget. Is Kaczyński demonstrating his unlimited power to us, or revealing that his capabilities are limited?"
-- IF KACZYŃSKI HAD SUCH POWER, HE WOULD GET RID OF ZIOBRO - ZAREMBA CONTINUES: "As the war in the coalition was escalating, one of the prominent PiS politicians, Krzysztof Sobolewski, wrote on Twitter: 'It must be in Rus'. And in Poland, as Jarosław Kaczyński wants.' This Byzantine formula might have evoked sympathy for the rebels in many, so repulsive is PiS's political culture. But surely, if the Leader truly had such power, he would have gotten rid of Ziobro. To people who are now engaging in fruitless debates about how Kaczyński nurtured Ziobro, one could answer that he was nurtured by the principles of politics – and parliamentary politics at that. Among his loyal comrades, the Leader can be an absolute ruler, not bothering with even the semblance of collegiality. But in a coalition, he is dependent on a fragile balance."
-- WILL MORAWIECKI, OBSERVED CLOSELY, DISAPPOINT KACZYŃSKI IN SOME WAY? - ZAREMBA CONTINUES: "Ultimately, however, the question is: will Morawiecki, observed closely, during work, become bored with Kaczyński even more easily? Or will he disappoint him in some way? It is also worth recalling that in the previous term, the Leader consistently maintained a certain balance between the prime minister and the minister of justice. Thereby fueling rivalry. Now he supposedly intends to change this. Anger at Ziobro facilitated a determination to strengthen the former banker. But is it lasting? PiS politicians say that it is not entirely known how Kaczyński will behave on such issues as relations with the European Union, further controlling and transforming institutions in the country, or ideological matters. He may hold Ziobro back. Or perhaps – paradoxically – find common ground with him. 'Morawiecki already speaks the PiS language, but won't the Leader catch him one day for excessive pragmatism? And Ziobro knows Kaczyński's needs, he knows how to recognize his ideological stirrings of the soul. If he has more frequent access to him, won't he learn to use it?' – ponders a PiS minister."
-- IN THE END, THERE MAY NOT BE GOOD NEWS FOR SOLIDARNA POLSKA - ZAREMBA'S CONCLUSION: "Of course, in the end, there may not be good news for Solidarna Polska. The new coalition agreement has been structured in such a way that the coalition partners' holdings on PiS lists for parliament in 2023 will not expand. But they will likely still be needed to avoid risking splits on the right. In this sense, Ziobro is condemned to constantly remind people of himself. Perhaps at some point, the war between him and the Leader will erupt fully. Or perhaps not. More important than assessing the state of the egos of the leaders of the Polish right, who provided us with this multi-week spectacle, remains the question: what will be the goals of this new "dual" government? What reason lies behind the parliamentary majority saved at the cost of Aesopian waffle on television? The ideological and programmatic void of the opposition is probably not enough."

-- THE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE HUMANIZATION OF ANIMALS ON THE RADICAL RIGHT LEADS TO THE DEHUMANIZATION OF PEOPLE - JACEK LIZINIEWICZ IN NIEZALEŻNA: "Worse, the right, which has a duty to care for creation, which has the tradition of Noah, says that looking at animals other than from the perspective of profit is leftist. This is an equally dangerous intellectual channel that actually justifies any action towards animals. It may even be more harmful than leftist ideology. One of the main slogans is the humanization of animals. Mr. Szczepan Wójcik certainly beat the drum yesterday and stated that such an attitude is appropriate for Nazis. Minister Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski sees Marxism in it. This is total absurdity. It's strange, because I remember a village where cows were given names. I know from history that, for example, Alexander the Great had Bucephalus, and the horse Incitatus was even admitted to the Senate. I don't know what to think about Anders' soldiers who smuggled a bear named Wojtek to Italy and who after the war visited their comrade in the Edinburgh Zoo and spoke to him. Were they Marxists? Was Marshal Józef Piłsudski, who was obsessed with his Kasztanka (who has a monument), a proponent of a dangerous ideology? So I could list animals that have been important in history. In legends. In culture. For thousands of years, we understood that animals are not ordinary things. It is worth pausing in this idiotic discussion about the humanization of animals. It seems that it leads to the dehumanization of people."

-- THE SUBSTANTIVE SENSE OF CHANGES IN THE GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE IS DEBATABLE; A FEW SENSIBLE STEPS, WHILE SOME REFORMS ARE ACTUALLY HARMFUL - JAN ROKITA IN KLUB JAGIELLOŃSKI: "A reform has been announced, as a result of which a number of ministries will be abolished, and their competences will be taken over by other ministries or non-governmental offices. However, the substantive sense of these changes is debatable. Although a few sensible steps have been taken, the overall reform is very conservative and limited. In some aspects, it may even prove harmful."
-- ROKITA ON THE STRUCTURE FOR KACZYŃSKI - TRANSFERRING A STRONG RECONCILIATORY FACTOR INTO THE GOVERNMENT: "For obvious political reasons, the key reform that will determine the functioning of the current cabinet is the creation of a government committee overseeing the army, security, justice, prosecution, administration, internal affairs, and special services, and the appointment of the leader of the entire power camp to this new position, with the rank of deputy prime minister. This fundamental change in the cabinet's decision-making structure would require a completely separate analysis. For the purpose of this paper, let us note only that it means – firstly – a fundamental division of spheres of influence within the government between the leader of the power camp and the prime minister, within which the latter retains socio-economic matters. Secondly – the transfer into the government of a strong conciliatory factor (which has so far operated within the party, i.e., outside the government), capable of resolving protracted disputes that have been ongoing without conclusion within the cabinet. The effects of such an experiment are difficult to predict today, for one reason: they will depend on how the new deputy prime minister and head of the committee actually shapes his role in the government, as, due to the scale of his political authority, it will practically depend solely on him."

-- THE ISSUE OF REPARATIONS MUST BE CONCLUDED - JACEK KARNOWSKI: "However, the most important conclusion from this scandal should concern reparations for German crimes committed during World War II. This issue must be concluded with an official report, a stance by the Sejm and the government, and the matter must be brought before international institutions and presented to the German authorities. For now, as we see, humbly waiting for German recognition of their own guilt only brings an offensive of historical relativism and increasing insolence from our neighbor in attempts to overthrow a democratically elected Polish government."
-- IN THIS SEJM TERM, WE MUST MOVE TO THE NEXT PHASE - KARNOWSKI CONTINUES: "It is necessary to move to the next phase as quickly as possible. And this must be done during this Sejm term, and rather in its first part. We all know well that this is the last moment – due to the passage of time and the changes progressing in Europe and the unknown shape of future Polish parliaments. If we do not name the scale of German state crimes on Polish territory, if we do not achieve satisfaction, then we will never stop historical lies, like those promoted by Ms. Dulkiewicz. And before we know it, they will actually turn us into perpetrators of the German crime of the Holocaust."

-- DILUTION OF THE FINANCIAL MECHANISM MEETS WITH OPPOSITION FROM EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT NEGOTIATORS - TOMASZ BIELECKI ON THE SUMMIT AND FURTHER STAGES: "Negotiators from the European Parliament are also opposing the dilution of the project (it must be approved by the European Parliament and EU governments in the Council of the EU). It is possible that the issue will return at the next summit in two weeks."
-- TOMASZ BIELECKI ON PROTECTIONIST TENDENCIES, WHICH POLAND OPPOSES: "We already have a Union that does not think of itself solely as a market, but as a power in the industrial, digital, and strategic spheres," Macron argued, as the summit also discussed the French concept of "strategic autonomy" (which smells dangerously of protectionism). The summit agreed that building this autonomy would be aided by allocating 20% of funds from "recovery and resilience programs" (Poland is entitled to up to 23 billion euros in grants) to digital transformation.

-- HEAD OF SOLIDARITY IS PLAYING GOWIN FOR HIS OWN INTERESTS - JACEK NIZINKIEWICZ IN RZ: "The head of Solidarity is fighting for his interests and influence in government-controlled units. The bizarre attack on Jarosław Gowin is Piotr Duda's negotiation tactic. Whether Piotr Duda will manage to gain anything from the rulers and keep his people in their positions, we will find out soon. Because it's not about Gowin here, but about hard interests and another extension of Solidarity's support for the government for the next three years. And Piotr Duda does not sell his skin cheaply."

-- HAVE POLISH AUTHORITIES FINALLY DONE SOMETHING SENSIBLY? - PAULINA JANUSZEWSKA IN KRYTYKA PRAWA CHWALI FRAGMENTARYCZNA USTAWĘ KALETY: "The fight against reprivatization is one of the slogans most often used by PiS in their clashes with PO. The adoption of Kaleta's proposal is a step in the right direction, but it does not answer the question crucial from the left's perspective: is PiS genuinely concerned about the welfare of tenants, and is it in the political interest of Kaczyński's party to deal with the reprivatization scandal in such a way as to end this issue once and for all and nationwide? Doubts about this remain."
-- PIOTR IKONOWICZ ON THE KALETA LAW - IN JANUSZEWSKA'S TEXT: "It is known that the law is somewhat incidental, but it addresses the most important postulate of the tenants' movement. And this postulate was: do not return buildings with tenants. I think the provisions of Kaleta's project constitute a strong barrier to this practice. Of course, it would be unreasonable for the Polish state to pay high compensation or for these properties to be returned further, because even if they are not returned with tenants, we will all bear the cost of relocating these tenants to new apartments before the return – says Ikonowicz, who submitted a draft law on this matter to the Sejm as early as 1995 as a member of parliament."

-- WHY ARE YOU DETERMINING THE SEX OF A CHILD? WELL, EXACTLY - ZAREMBA ON JOŃSKI'S FB POST ON THE BACKDROP OF JOŃSKI'S POST - IN MAGAZYN POLSAT NEWS: "Unfortunately, I have the impression that recently cheering for such changes has become something more than a consequence of acknowledging that the world is complicated for progressive circles. Because such changes confirm the view that there is no such thing as original identity. The choice of sex (not one of two, but of many) is to be a manifestation of human freedom. The more there are, the better. This carries gigantic civilizational consequences. It must lead to a revolution in upbringing and the model of interpersonal relations. I don't know if all supporters of these changes are aware of the consequences. Recently, the politician of Lewica, Dariusz Joński, announced on Facebook that he had a son. 'Why are you determining the sex of the child?' someone sarcastically commented. Well, exactly."
-- UNIVERSITY IN THE SPIRIT OF WHOEVER IS FOR MARGOT IS AGAINST PiS - ZAREMBA CONTINUES: "The decision to change gender is something dramatic and worthy of respect. But what about the view that a person's own declaration is enough for a man to become a woman? That no certificates are needed, not even from a psychologist, who I suspect has the tools to ascertain the authenticity of this transformation? The esteemed Jagiellonian University has decided to pass an exam in the latest, not yet solidified, correctness. Steeped in politics, to boot – because 'whoever is for Margot is against PiS.' Hence the university's decision, with which I began. I don't know how many people will be willing to take advantage of it. However, I remind the esteemed professors that every phenomenon has its consequences. Usually, one step leads to another."
-- CAUTION IS ADVISED IF WE DON'T WANT TO MAKE OURSELVES RIDICULOUS - ZAREMBA CONTINUES: "Speculation is already circulating online about what's next. Will someone who declares himself a woman around the age of sixty be able to retire early? Today, such possibilities are considered humorous. But beyond a complete disruption of the social order, we will face dealing with abuses, tricks, and the exploitation of new concepts, such as 'non-binarity.' Are we ready for this? Does our legal system even provide for such situations? And are we ready to change it in the name of a hypothesis? Or perhaps some caution would be advisable here if we don't want to make ourselves and our institutions ridiculous? The Senate and the Rector of the Jagiellonian University have boldly moved into a bright future. And the rest?
