THE STATE OF PLAY: Kaczyński Determined on Animal Welfare, Zaremba: PiS Haven't Built an Oligarchy Like Orban's, Wielowieyska: Trzaskowski Should Be in the Field Every Weekend for Three Years, Bodziony: Hołownia Hasn't Slowed Down
-- THIS IS TRULY NECESSARY, WE MUST PREVENT THIS EVIL - JAROSŁAW KACZYŃSKI IN A RECORDING: “This is truly necessary. A lot of evil is happening here and we must prevent this evil. Every good person should support this law. I support it with all my heart - encourages the PiS leader: - I would like to nominate two people: Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and MP, chairman of our party’s executive board, Krzysztof Sobolewski, to continue working in this direction, so that this action succeeds, because it is truly needed for animals, but above all it is needed for people, especially good people.”

-- KACZYŃSKI IS DETERMINED TO CONCLUDE THIS MATTER WITH A LAW - A COLLEAGUE OF THE PiS LEADER IN ANNA DĄBROWSKA'S ARTICLE IN POLITYKA: “The leader is determined, and for two reasons. Firstly, he is known for his great sensitivity towards animals, and secondly, he has already once lent his authority to this idea and the matter was blocked. This time he will not allow it to get stuck in the freezer due to the connections of a fur lobbyist with Father Rydzyk. We need to pull the reins and finish this matter with a law – says one of Kaczyński’s colleagues.”
-- WE WILL INTRODUCE THIS BAN - A PiS POLITICIAN FURTHER IN DĄBROWSKA'S ARTICLE: “We know that we have part of the voters connected with this industry against us, Father Rydzyk, that Konfederacja and Solidarna Polska will feed on this topic, already claiming that we are giving in to the leftists. On the other hand, there is the leader's concern for the fate of animals, his authority, and young people, whom we can win over with such ideas. It will be heated, but this time we will introduce this ban – assures a PiS politician. We'll wait and see.”

-- KACZYŃSKI ORGANIZED CONGRESSES AND WROTE PROGRAMS WHILE THEY WERE WASTING TIME - MICHAŁ KARNOWSKI: “Perhaps there are more intellectuals on the side of the Third Polish Republic, perhaps they have louder names and have possibly achieved greater careers in a world that values subservience. But there are incomparably fewer people there who would dedicate their time to working for the common good, who would focus their attention on public affairs, who know how to put aside their 'I' for the sake of 'us', who understand that in a democracy, service to voters is fundamental. That is where the source of Jarosław Kaczyński's camp's success lies. Which, incidentally, President Kaczyński understood from the beginning, organizing program congresses even in the darkest years for the camp, consistently building a program offer when those in power were 'wasting time'. Today, this is still the only deeply thought-out and serious concept in Polish politics, something more than empty slogans. And many wonderful professors worked on it. And this program continues to be updated – for example, in 2019 at a program congress in Katowice. All of this probably escaped Mr. Kowalewski, because on TVN, which he watches so intently, for example, the unsuccessfully sought-after PO program before the last elections was reported modestly.”

-- FOR NOW, THE AUTHORITIES ARE PROTECTED BY SPECIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN SOCIAL TRANSFERS PLUS THE OPPOSITION'S EMBARRASSMENT - PIOTR ZAREMBA IN RZ: “At the same time, asking once again about the goals of the 'good change', one can express regret that the team accused, often rightly, of accumulating more and more power wants to use it primarily to help themselves in consolidating their influence. It is possible that the question 'what about the citizens?' will eventually catch up with them. For now, they are protected by specific achievements in social transfers plus the opposition's embarrassment.”
-- THESE ARE WARS ABOUT THE SHAPE OF THE PITCH, NOT THE SHAPE OF POLAND - ZAREMBA CONTINUES: “The impression of this emptiness, the lack of a clear goal, is so overwhelming that one can sometimes get misleading impressions. Voices like Michał Moskal, the head of the PiS youth wing, but also the director of Jarosław Kaczyński's office, are gaining strength. From his interviews and public declarations, one could infer that some fundamental correction of PiS's image is being prepared – so that the party would be perceived as almost left-wing, concerned with ecology, animal rights, and guaranteeing equal pay for women. This is certainly not happening without the Leader’s consent. It provokes attacks from Konfederacja from orthodox right-wing positions and warnings from the liberal and left-wing opposition not to be fooled. Ziobro's people also gladly polemicize with such a message. I doubt that the PiS members themselves take this change seriously to the end. Wars with 'German media' or with judges will certainly allow a return to the right-wing line, as they will be perceived as ideologically motivated. But I repeat: these will be largely wars about the shape of the political pitch, not about the shape of Poland.”
-- PIS HAS NOT BUILT AN OLIGARCHY LIKE ORBAN'S - ZAREMBA CONTINUES: “It must be admitted that the achievements of this camp in building a political oligarchy system are far less advanced than what Viktor Orbán has managed to achieve in Hungary. For example, there is no broader caste of businessmen connected with the government on the horizon, although perhaps the 'tidying up of the media market' will become an opportunity to build one. Morawiecki's pension reform with its investment funds could provide a similar opportunity. One can today support the prime minister as a more rational factor, for example, in administering the fight against the pandemic and the pandemic crisis. But should hopes be placed on the next government being more 'his'? This politician achieves this by increasingly bending to the political whims of Kaczyński and his PiS entourage. And probably he has not said his last word in this area.”

-- TRUE IGNORANCE IS BELIEVING IN CONSPIRACIES AGAINST TRZASKOWSKI - DAWID WILDSTEIN IN NIEZALEŻNA: “And what are the environmentalists doing during this time, so eager for Cassandra-like lamentations when it comes to talking with the government? They started saying that millions of tons of sewage in the river are not a problem (apparently they are afraid of losing municipal grants). What is most terrifying in this situation is not the pettiness, lies, and cynicism of Trzaskowski, his people, or the environmentalists bought by them. Much worse is the attitude of his supporters, who believe their nonsense and conspiracy theories. Who are ready to swallow any filth. Because 'Czajka' showed that for some, Trzaskowski can do anything. Flood Warsaw with sewage and claim it's aliens' fault. Support reprivatization bandits. Spend millions on absurdities. Ruin the city. And the 'progressive' ones will still vote for him. To feel better than the 'moher berets and Poland B'. And in return, they will treat him like a substitute for God. This is true ignorance.”

-- TRZASKOWSKI SHOULD BE IN THE FIELD EVERY WEEKEND FOR THREE YEARS - DOMINIKA WIELOWIEYSKA IN GW: “The scenario could look like this, for example: after dealing with the Czajka matter, Trzaskowski – if he wants to be effective – should go out into the field almost every weekend and visit subsequent towns throughout Poland. And so for the entire three years. One cannot underestimate President Andrzej Duda, who during his term visited all counties and shook thousands of hands. However, the president of Warsaw is not in as comfortable a position as President Duda. Unlike Duda, he has a lot of very down-to-earth work to do. So a trivial question arises: will Trzaskowski want to do it, because it's a killer marathon. But voters reward politicians with votes mainly when they see sweat, blood, and tears.”

-- A GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT IS DOOMED TO FAILURE - SOCIOLOGIST PRZEMYSŁAW SADURA in the article by Dominika Sitnicka and Agata Szczęśniak in Oko: “'It is impossible to build a civic movement from the top down' — there is no doubt about that, says Dr. hab. Przemysław Sadura, a sociologist from the University of Warsaw. In his opinion, what Trzaskowski is planning is doomed to failure. According to Sadura, Trzaskowski would have a greater chance of success if he chose a different path: 'Deep transformation of Civic Platform – that is the task he should talk about now. And it will probably end there, when nothing comes of the movement.'”

-- WASTED POST-ELECTION ENTHUSIASM AND CIVIC POTENTIAL - JAKUB BODZIONY IN KULTURA LIBERALNA: “The Poland 2050 movement also benefits from the weakness of Rafał Trzaskowski and Civic Platform. The problem for the president of Warsaw is not only temporary difficulties related to urban policy, but the fact that during the summer he failed to capitalize on the election result, which he still refers to. As a result, his Nowa Solidarność movement remains a promise. The lack of specifics translated into the waste of some post-election enthusiasm and civic potential. In turn, Borys Budka did not pull PO out of the crisis, which was deepened by the express adoption of the law on politician pay raises, desperately repealed in the Senate. Hołownia benefits twice.”
-- HOŁOWNIA HASN'T SLOWED DOWN AFTER THE ELECTION - BODZIONY CONTINUES: “On Hołownia's side, there is undoubtedly enthusiasm and a freshness effect. Contrary to the predictions of some commentators, Poland 2050 did not fall apart after the presidential election. This is thanks to its leader, who, after a very good campaign, did not slow down and continued his travels around Poland, Facebook live sessions, and building structures, including an expert think tank. He has raised over a million złoty for his activities so far.”
-- HOŁOWNIA AVOIDS LABELS - BODZIONY CONTINUES: “The weakness of the movement remains its instability, both in financial and organizational matters. Local and parliamentary elections in three years are an undertaking that requires money and hundreds of engaged, proven individuals. Hołownia himself, like Biedroń before him, avoids right-wing and left-wing labels. It seems that this could be an effective method for gaining new MPs and expanding the electorate. However, there is also a threat – managing a group with a broad spectrum of views is difficult and can result in an ideologically fragmented entity, whose members will not have much in common. An effective way to gain support in the initial stage may therefore lead to problems in the future.”

-- COLLEAGUES FROM POROZUMIENIE WANT TO HUMILIATE EMILEWICZ - JAKUB SZCZEPAŃSKI IN INTERIA: “From conversations that Interia had this week with United Right politicians, it appears that politicians from Porozumienie, close to Gowin, do not want Jadwiga Emilewicz in the government. This is punishment for her rebellion six months ago and an attempt to take over the party. According to our interlocutors, she missed the right moment, and her popularity within the structures has declined. - There is a tendency in Porozumienie to drag her (Emilewicz - ed.) through the mud. There is no room in the government for both Gowin and her – one of the proponents of postponing the May presidential elections tells us. He claims that the Deputy Prime Minister hopes to get something from Mateusz Morawiecki. However, not long ago, the Prime Minister's associates assured Interia: - Emilewicz's place is Porozumienie's affair.”

-- THEY FEAR SUCCESS AND OVERCOMING THE INERTIA OF THE THIRD POLISH REPUBLIC - JACEK KARNOWSKI ON THE VISTULA SPIT CANAL: “What are they afraid of? They are afraid of Polish success. They are afraid of proving that Poland can implement ambitious projects and can benefit from them. And it can move forward. That's what they're afraid of. Because if the Vistula Spit canal is completed, it means we have overcome the inertia, so typical of the Third Polish Republic, and we can move forward. We can make ambitious plans and implement them. But ambitions can be held by Germany, France, Great Britain, but not Poland. Poland is supposed to remain in a holy clinch. It is supposed to protect frogs and ants to the delight of Western environmentalists. And it is supposed to enjoy its GDP per capita twice as low as that of Germany or France. After all, this is generally beneficial for everyone, except Poles. But are our enlightened 'elite' representatives there to care about GDP per capita on the Vistula? Free advice. The battle for the Spit is a battle for something much more important than a canal opening the ports on the Vistula Lagoon. It is a battle for Polish self-belief. It is a battle for overcoming externally imposed powerlessness. And therefore, it must be won.”

-- TOMASZ MARKIEWKA ON DESTRUCTIVE COMPLAINING ABOUT PiS VOTERS - SPEAKS IN GW IN AN INTERVIEW WITH ARKADIUSZ GRUSZCZYŃSKI: “It is multidimensional, because the opposition itself is like that. Unfortunately, some manifestations of this anger are destructive. I'm talking about complaints that people sold themselves for 500 złoty, are uneducated, ignorant, and simply worse. Again, such a way of reacting to PiS's actions is probably psychologically understandable, but politically barren. Because what are we hoping for? That someone will suddenly say: 'Damn, you've accused me a hundred times of selling out democracy, and nothing, but on the hundred and first time I realized how stupid I was, and you are smart, I repent and join you.'”
-- THE SOLUTION TO ANGER IS NOT A SMILE POLICY - MARKIEWKA CONTINUES: “Disregarding anger is a sure way to concede it by walkover to the far right. I would like us to create more political space for anger that leads in a constructive direction. PiS, with its set of typical right-wing obsessions, too often directs its voters' anger into destructive areas. However, the solution is not a smile policy, which pretends that our problems begin and end with PiS, but providing political representation for angry groups whose interests should be represented by a wise democratic state, and this has not been done either before PiS or now. From employees on precarious contracts, through people excluded from public transport, to the LGBT+ community.”
