-- TYGODNIK POWSZECHNY REMEMBERS JÓZEFA HENNELOWA, WHO PASSED AWAY AT 95: “Józefa Hennelowa turned 95 on April 1, 2020. She dedicated over two-thirds of her life to „Tygodnik Powszechny”. She began her work as a proofreader in 1948, later becoming an editor, editorial secretary, and deputy editor-in-chief until 2008. A long-time columnist and author of excellent texts. In between, she served as a Member of Parliament during the most turbulent period of the rebirth of Polish free democracy. She taught readers and us, younger editors, responsibility for words, distance from pathos, an interest in seemingly trivial everyday matters, behind which there was always sensitivity to the needs of others. (Sometimes the price for this empathy was petty attacks in right-wing media). Let us recall that in 2013, she was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, and from the hands of Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, she received one of the highest Vatican honors – the Order of St. Gregory the Great, awarded for special services to the Church. Dear Mrs. Józefa, dear Ziuta, thank you for the large part of your life devoted to „Tygodnik”, for your texts, for setting such a high bar for journalistic ethics, for your discreet and kind companionship.”

-- KATARYNA REMEMBERS HENRYK WUJEK – A MAN WITH A SMIILING VOICE – WILL ANY PRESIDENT RECOGNIZE THAT WUJEK DESERVES THE ORDER OF THE WHITE EAGLE: “I still remember our fruitful meetings regarding the reform of association law during President Komorowski's term,” wrote the president of Ordo Iuris about Wujek, as everyone who had the opportunity to interact with him appreciated his willingness and ability to converse despite differences. “If only every Pole were like Wujek…”. Today, Henryk treads paths among the saints, still taking care of Important Matters for us. I have no doubt that he will soon have his square in Biłgoraj, streets in Warsaw and Radom, and eventually in other cities too. And that some future president will recognize that the Order of the White Eagle deserves Henryk Wujek – just like that, not the other way around. Henryk doesn't need such an honor, but we desperately need it if we want to rebuild our long-broken community and shape future generations so that they don't destroy each other. We need something to build upon. No one showed us better than Henryk on what to build. I hope we don't waste this lesson of a beautiful life.”

-- BELSAT REACHES UP TO 750 THOUSAND PEOPLE – AGNIESZKA ROMASZEWSKA IN AN INTERVIEW WITH JACEK GĄDEK in Gazeta.pl: “One of our protest broadcasts on YouTube has well exceeded a million viewers. We estimate that there are 250-300 thousand satellite TV users who watch us regularly. In addition, our portal and social media. And broadcasting via SMART technology. When the internet was shut down, people called those who had Belsat, because only we were able to report what was actually happening in the country. Even before the protests, after several studies, we estimated that our total audience was about 750,000 people, which is a significant number, as Belarus has nine and a half million inhabitants – including children and the elderly.”
-- ROMASZEWSKA ON GĄDEK'S QUESTION WHY BELsat BROADCASTS FROM A HUMBLE ROOM: “I am unable to fully answer this question. The fact is that our three-year efforts and requests to create normal working conditions for Belsat have been fruitless. It is especially regrettable that this did not even happen before the presidential elections. On many occasions, including in conversations with TVP authorities, I emphasized how crucial these elections were, but it was like shouting into the wind.”
-- CIHANOUSKAYA NEVER DECEIVED THE BELARUSIANS AND NEVER PRETENDED TO BE A POLITICAL LEADER – ROMASZEWSKA CONTINUES: “Perhaps because she never lied to them. She always emphasized that she was one of them, an ordinary woman, and that she was never suited for politics. Cihanouskaya has immense social respect. People don't think she'll be able to govern the country, but she never claimed she could either. Instead, she said she would assemble a kind of interim cabinet to help her. She only wanted to temporarily take power – until new elections. She told this to Belarusians directly, so her compatriots have reason to trust her.”

-- A LONG CONVERSATION BETWEEN BELsat AND CIHANOUSKAYA: “– I would like to say not only to those Belarusians who voted for me, but also to those who voted for other candidates. Everyone has their own opinion, but everyone should understand: these elections were neither fair nor transparent. And they were rigged. Our government stole our right to choose. We must regain this right. I also really want this crisis plaguing the country to end as soon as possible. But it will only end when dialogue is established between the authorities and the nation. Only the nation itself can influence this dialogue if it perseveres and if the strikes expand. Only in this case will the authorities hear the people and agree to this dialogue, and during this dialogue, we will create optimal conditions for holding new, fair, and transparent elections. And we will elect a new, worthy president – for a safe and bright future.”

-- THERE WAS NO LACK OF CLINGING TO REALITY, EXCESSIVE EMPHASIS ON THE MAGIC OF 10 MILLION VOTES – RAFAŁ KALUKIN ON TRZASKOWSKI'S MOVEMENT – writes in Polityka weekly: “Although there was no shortage of clinging to reality, especially in the sphere of symbols, perhaps an excessive emphasis on the magic of 10 million votes cast for the Civic Platform candidate, and overly wishful analogies to the Solidarity legacy.”
-- IT IS TO MAINTAIN THE IMPRESSION OF SEPARATION OF A POPULAR LEADER FROM AN UNPOPULAR FORMATION – KALUKIN CONTINUES: “Trzaskowski's movement is primarily intended to maintain the impression of the popular leader's separation from his unpopular formation. For time immemorial, social movements have been a counterbalance to calculating or corrupt political parties. But is that a sufficient reason to embark on a utopia without even a cursory sociological diagnosis at hand? Especially since the implementation of a risky plan may block more realistic political scenarios in the future. It is also worth asking whether a civic construction actually responds to the political challenges of the upcoming term. Although, of course, something can always happen for the first time, and Trzaskowski's movement may positively influence the opposition political scene, adding new energy, people, and ideas to it.”

-- HE BELIEVED HE WAS ENTITLED TO 10 MILLION AND WENT NOWHERE – AGNIESZKA KUBLIK in Gazeta Wyborcza: “He received 10,018,263 votes in the presidential elections. He believed he was entitled to them, that these millions would follow him. Anywhere. It's the other way around. These millions are owed something by Trzaskowski. Time, enthusiasm, energy, diligence, creativity in pursuing the promised goal. A Poland where the prosecutor charges based on reliable evidence, the judge judges justly, and public media do not lie with public money in the interest of the government. But immediately after the lost elections, Trzaskowski went nowhere.”
-- HE DECIDED HE DIDN'T HAVE TO AND RETREATED, WORSE THAN MISSING – HE REJECTED THE OPPORTUNITY – KUBLIK CONTINUES ABOUT TRZASKOWSKI: “And he received an unprecedented opportunity from the government to act, but for some reason decided he didn't have to. He retreated. Because, after all, an excuse like holidays can hardly be taken seriously. After all, he declared that his family had given him permission to train as a leader. And if so, it is impossible to accept that they would not support him in taking the lead in the fight for public decency. Immediately after the elections, Kaczyński's camp did not go on vacation, they did not give up. They proceeded to implement their plan, because Kaczyński has a plan for Duda's second term and a second parliamentary term. He wants to rule until 2030. And does Trzaskowski have a plan? He was supposed to. Meanwhile, he left 10 million Poles disappointed and disheartened. Because social media posts don't create leaders. These are the opportunities Trzaskowski missed. Worse – he rejected them. Because there is no intention in missing something, but there is a conscious strategy in rejecting it.”
-- SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR A LEADER, HE MISSED THEM ALL – KUBLIK CONTINUES: “And the opposition, which should have been scoring points against the government for this, also voted in favor of the increases. Did these increases simply belong to them? Such a gesture of solidarity from democrats with autocrats? A leader like Trzaskowski was supposed to become would have done something about it. Perhaps condemned it? Perhaps appealed to the opposition for decency. Perhaps something? Trzaskowski did not show himself here as someone who cares about these 10 million Poles. So many opportunities to become a leader. And he missed them all. How is effective and successful politics done? One creates opportunities to take the lead oneself. Or one uses the ones that appear. A politician who cannot build their own leadership, even with citizens, will build nothing.”
-- NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN PLATFORMA SINCE THE LOST ELECTIONS – KUBLIK ON THE PLATFORM OF LONG WEEKENDS: “Nothing has changed in Platforma since the lost presidential elections. Strategic meetings on how to react, how to score points against PiS, how to talk about what PiS is doing to Poland? Not at all. They are planned and postponed. First Wednesday doesn't work, then no, because Friday. Then the weekend, then August 15th. Then, of course, the school year. And time will pass.”

-- MORAWIECKI HAS NOT LOST CONTROL OF HIS HEALTH – PIOTR ZAREMBA in POLSAT NEWS: “Since this team is increasingly divided into Szనంbro's allies and Morawiecki's allies, the question about Szumowski's successor was important. If former Marshal Stanisław Karczewski were to become his successor, the ministry would fall into the hands of an important politician close to Beata Szydło, and thus indirectly to Ziobro. The fact that Morawiecki was able to appoint Adam Niedzielski, the current head of the National Health Fund, shows that he has at least control over this ministry. This is also important in the context of potential further investigations into the purchase of masks and respirators.”
-- WILL NIEDZIELSKI BE ABLE TO PLAY THE ROLE OF A GUARDIAN OF POLES? – ZAREMBA CONTINUES: “Whether Niedzielski will be able to play the role of a guardian of Poles during a potential second wave of the coronavirus is another matter. Szumowski did it well at first. Later, he did it worse and worse. And Karczewski's recognition, mainly due to his verbal blunders, was not necessarily an advantage.”
-- ATTACKS ON RAU FOR CRITICIZING LGBT IDEOLOGY ARE ABSURD; SUCH IS THE COLLECTIVE VIEW OF THIS CAMP – ZAREMBA CONTINUES: “However, they opted for a professor who, apart from briefly heading the Sejm Foreign Affairs Committee, has no experience in this area. Zbigniew Rau is an excellent scientist, dealing with legal doctrines at the University of Łódź. Attacks on him because he criticized 'LGBT ideology' somewhere are absurd. Such is the collective view of this camp. However, a lack of experience can be seen as a burden.”
-- ZAREMBA ON THE ENTERPRISING JABŁOŃSKI: “One can, but there was hardly anyone else to point to. The usual candidate for this position, Krzysztof Szczerski, refused at the last minute. One can wonder why Paweł Jabłoński, an enterprising deputy minister in this department, was not chosen. But generally, one can speak of a short bench.”
-- BEING A MINISTER IS A LESS THAN ATTRACTIVE PROSPECT – ZAREMBA CONTINUES: “We have not seen a larger cadre of classic politicians specialized in topics such as foreign policy. Those who are there are not taken too seriously. On the other hand, the refusal of Szczerski or Gowin shows that being a minister is a less than attractive prospect. It mainly consists of putting a face to something over which one has little influence. On top of that, for meager money – the blocked pay raises for politicians come to mind. The ruling party should seriously consider this. If, after the reconstruction, it wants to have a government composed of a small number of people, each burdened with a mass of competencies and issues, it must focus even more on the best. And they are not eager to do so.”

-- TOMASZ SAKIEWICZ ON CZAPUTOWICZ'S DEPARTURE – IT'S GOOD THAT IT'S NOW, BECAUSE NO ONE WOULD TREAT THE DECLARATIONS OF THE DEPARTING MINISTER AS BINDING IN A TIME OF CRISIS IN BELARUS – writes in Niezależna: “We need a minister quickly who will hold the office for a longer period and have strong political support, because the decisions made concerning Belarus can shape a significant part of Polish eastern policy. The outgoing minister, regardless of his competencies, was not suitable for this, because no one seriously considers the declarations of a minister who is leaving in two or three weeks. If we are unable to clearly formulate our foreign policy towards Russia and Belarus, but also if we are unable to implement what we declare, Poland will be pushed out by other countries: either Russia, or Germany, which will actively enter this region.”

-- THE VECTOR OF GERMAN MEDIA'S ACTIONS REMAINS UNCHANGED – MICHAŁ KARNOWSKI: “Another week has passed during which we have not only experienced the strength of the German media towards Poles once again, but above all, we have seen that the vector of their actions remains unchanged. Everything that aims to make Poland a normal and developed country is attacked and ridiculed.”
-- SCHEMES ARE BEING PUMPED INTO OUR PUBLIC LIFE WHERE EVERY AMBITION AND BOLD PLAN IS CONSIDERED A FREAK – KARNOWSKI CONTINUES: “The most intellectually primitive schemes are being pumped into our public life, according to which every ambition, every bold plan, is contrary to nature, is a freak. This applies to the Central Communication Port, where expenses for preparing the concept and plans are ridiculed as allegedly squandering money. The Vistula Spit canal is attacked because it is unnecessary. If something like this were being built in Germany, those same media would probably report on an engineering miracle. Attempts to restore large industry with its own know-how are particularly persistently attacked.”
-- THE FURIOUS ATTACK ON ANY ATTEMPT TO DISCUSS WHAT IS NORMAL IN BRUSSELS I CONSIDER HUMILIATING FOR POLES – KARNOWSKI'S CONCLUSION: “I emphasize: I am not saying that the raises should be large, I am not even saying that they should be at all, but I consider this furious roar against any attempt to discuss what is normal in Germany and Brussels to be humiliating for Poles. Or perhaps the point is, as the media reported, that former MPs could be bought for two thousand zlotys?”

-- THEY COULD HAVE KILLED LITVINENKO, INVADED UKRAINE, POISONED NAVALNY. EXPERTS HAVE NO DOUBT. AND IN SMOLENSK? – MICHAŁ KARNOWSKI: “They could have invaded Georgia. They could have attacked Ukraine, set it on fire, murdered, annexed Crimea. They could have deliberately poisoned Litvinenko, Skripal, Navalny, to send a signal to the world. Now, regarding Belarus, they are also supposedly capable of anything. Yes – the media have no doubt, experts are certain. And the more liberal and progressive they are, the more certain. Michnik even prays for Navalny – poisoned by you-know-who. They repeat every day that you don't know, but THEY are capable of anything, absolutely anything. And in Smolensk in 2010? Were they capable of anything or not? Could they have done it or not? 'Oh, that's another topic,' they exclaim. Are you sure? Regarding Navalny, it's supposedly about intimidation, a clear signal to anyone who would dare. And in Smolensk? What signal for the region was supposed to be the death of such a president and so many of his supporters who challenged them in 2008 in Georgia and on many other occasions?”

-- BODNAR DID NOT NOTE, FOR EXAMPLE, THE CASE OF THE TRADE UNIONISTS AT AGORA – JACEK LIZINKIEWICZ in Niezależna: “Besides, it's no wonder. Adam Bodnar did not note the case of the trade unionists at 'Gazeta Wyborcza' who were afraid to reveal their names due to the trouble they faced at work. Both situations clearly show that today the left has the biggest problem with freedom of speech. It is precisely this suffocation by political correctness that activists and journalists pose the main threat to freedom of expression. As if that weren't enough, the left doesn't get outraged by a wiser or stupider opinion, but simply by reality and facts. That's how it is, that those who heroically fight for freedom of speech are the ones to fear the most. They are unable to understand that one can simply think differently, and their conviction always ends in repression and tyranny. All of this has happened before in history, and it seems we are once again going in circles. We will create a new world that will again be burdened by the same human flaws. Because one thing seems to remain constant in this game. The nature of man.”

-- ZIOBRO IS INTERESTED IN A LASTING IDEOLOGICAL WAR – PIOTR ZAREMBA in RZ: “It's true – Ziobro is trying to build a reputation as a tough right-winger. Sometimes he goes too far, as in the case of NGOs that receive foreign funding. Sometimes he puts his own government in an awkward position, like when he suggested denouncing the Istanbul Convention at a time when Prime Minister Morawiecki was negotiating the EU budget with a rule of law clause. He is a man interested in a lasting, not just a campaign-based, ideological war. But is that enough to explain what has happened in recent weeks?”
-- THANKS TO THE CAMPAIGN, LGBT ACTIVISTS CAN EASIER PRESENT THEMSELVES AS VICTIMS OF ATTACKS – ZAREMBA CONTINUES: “So, another answer emerges: the presidential campaign of President Duda is to blame, where the topic of LGBT was chosen as one of the main ones. I evaluated negatively both the crude propaganda of Jacek Kurski's TVP and some of the president's own statements. Undoubtedly, LGBT activists can today more easily present themselves as victims of attacks. Evoking sympathy from a wide spectrum, including liberal Catholics from 'Więź' or 'Tygodnik Powszechny'.”
-- THE POETICS OF LGBT COMMUNITIES DID NOT HELP THE LIBERAL-LEFT OPPOSITION TO WIN – ZAREMBA CONTINUES: “Whether Duda's tough campaign tone sharpened this poetics or not, it was already inherent in the sensibility of at least some of these communities. It confirmed their negative stereotype and certainly did not help the liberal-left opposition win. However, that did not seem to be the most important thing. More important was the search for satisfaction, impatience, irritation that the issue was settled almost everywhere, but not in Poland.”
-- WE SHOULD NOT GIVE THE OTHER SIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR TEDDY BEAR MARTYRDOM – ZAREMBA CONTINUES: “Some conservatives reject the view that Catholics should avoid ideological war. On the contrary, they supposedly lost in the West precisely because they avoided it. In Poland, the number of those recommending moderation is increasing. Even the increasingly moderate Terlikowski calls for it in the matter of the war with LGBT. If only for the sake of effectiveness, because we should not give the other side an opportunity for teddy bear martyrdom, for dramatic cinematic shots. I even agree with that.”
-- ZAREMBA ON THE RISING STAKE ON AN EASIER WORLD, WHERE PRIVILEGES ARE RECEIVED WITHOUT OBLIGATIONS: “This puts people like me in a difficult situation. I have no doubt that such people and their circumstances deserve respect. On the other hand, I also have no doubt that this is one of the elements of the changing world. The first example that comes to mind: the demand for gay civil partnerships seems natural and even moderate, since these people cannot marry. But registered partnerships, including heterosexual ones, are a bet on an easier world, where one receives privileges, including financial ones from the state, without obligations, because it is easy to break them. One could say that sexual minorities are paving the way for the majority to live without obligations, to engage in egoistic behavior. If gays and lesbians eventually achieve the right to adopt children, it will be a complete triumph of egoism. Regardless of expert opinions, it is unlikely that it is not doubtful that it is better for a child to have a father and a mother.”

-- MICHAŁ SZUŁDRZYŃSKI ON ANNIVERSARIES – BECAUSE OF CORONAVIRUS, BECAUSE OF PLATFORMA – writes in RZ: “No triumphal arch was built, not even an obelisk in the center of the capital. On August 14th, the Piłsudski Museum was opened in Sulejówek, because it was supposed to be ready for the centenary of regaining independence, but because it was two years behind schedule, it was added to the successes of the centenary of the Battle of Warsaw. What will remain longer, however, is a commemorative stamp issued by Poczta Polska. Of course, there are 100 mundane reasons why more could not be done. Because of the coronavirus, because of Platforma, and building any such facility is not a romantic charge, but hard work. But the plans were so magnificent. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture Piotr Gliński described in an interview with 'Rzeczpospolita' a network of museums that are to be built. And it's not just about buildings, but also about a spiritual structure that is to transform society. It is to create a new national community. Because the one they are thinking about when they talk about 'reconstruction' never actually existed.”
-- IT IS EASIER TO BUILD SOCIAL TRANSFERS THAN TO BUILD A MUSEUM; OUR RIGHT HAS NOT LEARNED THIS YET – SZUŁDRZYŃSKI'S CONCLUSION ON ANNIVERSARIES: “By commemorating anniversaries, we momentarily become Piłsudski, Jagiełło. For a moment, we feel like insurgents going into battle in August. Commemorating anniversaries is slowly replacing our present. Perhaps that's why it diverges so painfully from reality and falls apart with the paper showing through from underneath? Paradoxically, it turns out that it is easier to build a social transfer program and put billions of zlotys into citizens' pockets than to build a museum. Our right has not learned this yet.”

-- "OHS AND AHS" FOR CIESZYŃSKI WERE POURED OUT BY BOTH SUPPORTERS AND OPPONENTS – JUSTYNA SUCHECKA AND SZYMON JADCZAK in TVN24: “While collecting opinions for this article, we noticed with growing surprise that a specific sense of humor might be one of the few flaws that people who have encountered Cieszyński see in him. A patriot, an excellent manager, a capable official, an excellent interlocutor. 'Ohs' and 'ahs' poured out from both political supporters and opponents.”
-- HE REVITALIZED E-HEALTH – CIESZYŃSKI'S CRITIC IN THE TVN24 ARTICLE: “– A dozen or so years ago, something started to be done with the digitalization of healthcare. But for years we were treading water. Only Cieszyński revitalized the e-prescription system, as well as e-sick leave. Thanks to this, it was possible to avoid the return of hundreds of millions in EU subsidies, and to get through the worst moments of the pandemic relatively calmly – says Tomasz Zieliński from Porozumienie Zielonogórskie.”
-- IT WAS BETTER TO "FIRE" THOSE WHO PROBABLY HAD SOMETHING FOUND ON THEM NOW, SO THAT ZIOBRO COULD NOT BLACKMAIL IN THE FALL – CONTINUES JADCZAK AND SUCHECKA'S ARTICLE: “One politician from PiS in Mateusz Morawiecki's close circle points to this investigation as the reason for the resignation. – This is not about Szumowski, nor about Cieszyński. A major government reconstruction is planned for the fall, which could lead to a serious conflict with Zbigniew Ziobro and his people. He has already been informed that he will lose influence in the State Forests, which have become a base for Solidarna Polska. Ziobro is preparing for this confrontation by gathering dirt. That's why it was better to 'fire' those who probably had something found on them now, so that Ziobro could not blackmail us with them in the fall – believes our interlocutor.”

-- JAŚKOWIAK FORBADE THE EMISSION OF SOUND BY HOMOPHOBIC YELLERS: “The vans of the Pro-Life Foundation can drive around the streets, but they have no right to emit any noise. Thanks to this, the residents of Poznań will not hear that 'children in Western European countries are victims of homosexual pedophiles' and similar homophobic slogans. As read in Noizz, the van was denied registration as a mobile gathering, which in practice means that although the vehicle can drive around the city, it cannot broadcast voice messages. And if this happens, the police can intervene based on applicable regulations.”

-- IS THE WARSAW CITY HALL HARBORING MOBBERS? – DOMINIKA SITNICKA in OKO.PRESS: “Employees of the Public Land Management Board, a budgetary unit of Warsaw, have been complaining about mobbing for several years. Over five years, 41 people have left or been dismissed. There are about 70 employees in the entire ZTP. According to the city authorities, "irregularities have occurred [there]", but there is no talk of mobbing. Management and leadership do not face any consequences.”
-- THE WARSAW PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE REFUSED TO HELP EMPLOYEES AND INITIATE AN INVESTIGATION – OKO CONTINUES: “I swore to myself that I would see this matter through, even if I had to stand in front of the City Hall at Bankowy Square with a banner saying 'Warsaw City Hall harbors mobbers.' Currently, proceedings are underway in the labor court to reinstate Anna to her position at ZTP. A few weeks ago, the Warsaw prosecutor's office refused to initiate an investigation into mobbing, to which employees and the trade union filed complaints.”

-- MARCIN KRÓL ON THE FACT THAT ANTI-ELITISM IS NOT PART OF DEMOCRACY – writes in GW: “And finally, thanks to these elites – post-Marxist in Warsaw and Catholic in Krakow (I had the rare fortune to belong to both) – the first legally published works indicating the direction of changes emerged, then the Workers' Defence Committee, an increasing number of officially published journals and works, i.e., underground, until these elites played a secondary but crucial role during 'Solidarity' 1980-81 and later until 1989. The role of elites and salons was therefore enormous and should not be underestimated, but rather learned from.”
