-- UPON ARRIVAL IN WARSAW, THE PRIME MINISTER'S BRIEFING AT THE CHANCELLERY, THE PRIME MINISTER SPOKE IN BRUSSELS AT DAWN ACCOMPANIED BY ORBAN AND DISCUSSED THE LACK OF POLITICAL FACTOR IN MONEY DISTRIBUTION - 300LIVE: https://300polityka.pl/live/2020/07/21/

-- JACEK KARNOWSKI ON THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE PREVIOUS CLAUSE IN THE SUMMIT CONCLUSIONS: "The key is therefore - as far as we know - on the one hand, the recording that the European Commission will present tools for assessing and criteria for the rule of law, and on the other hand, the removal of the clause that provided for decisions on this matter to be made in the European Council (prime ministers and presidents) by qualified majority. Such a clause was in earlier versions of the document. According to what the Prime Ministers of Poland and Hungary announced, when the matter returns to the next EU summit, both countries will have veto rights."

-- WARSAW AND BUDAPEST AGREED TO A VERBAL TRIBUTE BUT ENSURED IT COULD NOT BECOME A TOOL OF BLACKMAIL - KARNOWSKI CONTINUES: "So why are Western leaders also announcing success in this matter? Because they did manage to record the link between the rule of law and funds. They believe it's a precedent they can extend, bend, reinterpret, and invoke. Warsaw and Budapest agreed to this verbal tribute, but they ensured it could not be forged into a real tool of blackmail. Because if such a solution were to enter into force, Brussels would very quickly begin to interfere in everything: in media content, in life protection, in the education system. Today, for the left, 'human rights' are every point on the left's agenda."

-- KARNOWSKI ON BRUSSELS' LEGAL TRICKS: "Poland and Hungary, Prime Ministers Morawiecki and Orbán, were playing a game with enormous stakes. One could say that politicians rarely decide matters of such great historical significance in a single meeting. If the Union does not resort to legal tricks, if it has not deceived, if decisions on the criteria for the rule of law will truly be made UNANIMOUSLY by the European Council, then both heads of government have a great reason to be proud. They are returning victorious."

-- A VETO WOULD LEAD TO THE THREAT OF AGREEMENTS BETWEEN COUNTRIES - MARCIN FIJOŁEK HEARS FROM POLISH NEGOTIATORS - as written in Polsat News: "It's not difficult to bring about a veto and a summit failure, but it's about convincing others. Threats immediately stiffen partners, but this requires experience. Moreover, talking about a veto would open up the possibility of an unfavorable scenario for Poland, where instead of a deal at the EU level, there would simply be agreements between countries, and we would be left with nothing" - indicated our interlocutor from the prime minister's entourage.

-- FIJOŁEK ON UNDERMINING THE PRIME MINISTER: "The pressure from Zbigniew Ziobro and the politicians of his party was perceived by the prime minister's colleagues as an attempt to undermine his position and use difficult, multi-layered negotiations to point at Morawiecki as 'soft,' too easily compromising."

-- THE WHOLE ISSUE HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANTLY DILUTED - FIJOŁEK CONTINUES: "However, the devil may be in the details, and these will only be the subject of political negotiations (and probably actions) in the near future - a political and legal dispute with Brussels and some capitals can be expected. However, the entire issue has certainly been significantly diluted compared to what was on the table some time ago, and the approval of any potential mechanism by qualified majority (by the Council of the EU) also significantly hinders the opening of this door."

-- FIJOŁEK ON MORAWIECKI'S MULTI-LAYERED GAME IN BRUSSELS: "Morawiecki and his team were engaged in several multi-layered, interconnected games in Brussels. 'On the one hand, we fought for the largest possible sums of money for Poland, trying to slow down the Northern countries, the group of misers, and defending the PLN 700 billion declared by the prime minister for Poland. On the other hand, the fight was about maximally limiting and diluting the links between the assessment of the rule of law and funds and budget resources. Finally, the third playing field was defending against accusations from within the camp of insufficient effectiveness and toughness' - we hear from Prime Minister Morawiecki's colleagues. And while on the first playing field the head of government can announce success, as the numbers defend him (the final amount may be around the aforementioned PLN 700 billion, although there will still be a lot of effort needed here), the other two playing fields remain unresolved and will be the subject of further laps of the marathon. However, this will now be in Warsaw, not in Brussels, and not within dozens of hours. It is clear that there is no talk of a quiet summer season and holidays in Polish politics this year."

-- NO ARBITRARY RULE IN WRITING - BARTOSZ PATUREJ IN Onet's NEWSLETTER: "The fifth day of the European Council summit concluded with a magnificent compromise. There is no written arbitrary rule under which funds are automatically cut due to rule of law violations. However, a clearly worded control mechanism, strongly emphasized by the head of the Council, applies to the same matter. Everything hinges on the details. Even today, however, we know that everyone has declared success. One can wish everyone such agreements."

-- THE RULE OF LAW IS NOT JUST POLAND AND HUNGARY, BUT ALSO CORRUPTION IN BULGARIA AND ROMANIA, ITALIAN MAFIA, DUTCH TAX HAVEN - JĘDRZEJ BIELECKI IN RZ: "In turn, the Dutch Prime Minister, who wanted to be seen as a guardian of financial responsibility at the summit, has turned his country into a tax haven that steals the fiscal revenues of other EU states. In Brussels, they preferred not to talk about all of this. They also tried to hide the problem of the rule of law, which not only involves the situation of Polish courts or Hungarian media, but also corruption in Bulgaria and Romania or mafia rule in Italy. The EU may buy some time with this summit. But will it use it to secure its future?"

-- OLAF OSICA ON THE NEW POLITICAL ARCHITECTURE OF THE EU AFTER GREAT BRITAIN'S DEPARTURE - writes in Tygodnik Powszechny: "Until now, the Netherlands, a founding member of the Community, as well as Denmark and Sweden, operated under the belief that their interests were strongly represented in London (lack of agreement on continental political integration) and Berlin (pressure for balanced budgets and reforms). Today, they face the necessity of defending their philosophy alone. After a decade of the euro crisis and in the face of the pandemic, it seems difficult to understand. However, Northern societies have always treated integration more as a space for common trade than for building a common political force for Europe. Therefore, they do not want to pay for others, even though their development depends on the success of all."

-- JĘDRZEJ BIELECKI ON POSSIBLE SUCCESSORS TO CZAPUTOWICZ - writes in RZ: "Government sources mention several names of possible successors to Czaputowicz, but no clear favorite stands out. There is talk of the head of the Presidential Chancellery, Krzysztof Szczerski, but with the reservation that Andrzej Duda likely does not have enough influence to place his man in such an important ministry. On the other hand, the candidacy of Konrad Szymański, a figure respected even in opposition circles, seems difficult to implement, as Mateusz Morawiecki is unlikely to want to get rid of someone on whom the government's entire European strategy is based. Adam Bielan also appears on the list of names, but according to our interlocutors, in Jarosław Kaczyński's eyes, he lacks sufficient experience to hold such a responsible position. For similar reasons, two deputy ministers of foreign affairs, who are mentioned in the context of searching for Czaputowicz's successor, have little chance of being nominated: 38-year-old Szymon Szynkowski (vel Sęk) and 34-year-old Paweł Jabłoński. Professor Zbigniew Rau, chairman of the Sejm's Foreign Affairs Committee, is also mentioned as a potential new head of diplomacy. However, he himself admits to "Rz" that he is "completely surprised by these speculations." PiS MEP Ryszard Czarnecki also refuses to comment on his chances of taking over from Czaputowicz."

-- PARADOXICALLY, MEDIA REGULATIONS THEMSELVES AS SUCH MAY NOT BE A BAD IDEA - PAWEŁ BRAVO IN TYGODNIK POWSZECHNY: "In the neoliberal atmosphere, no one cared about regulations concerning ownership structure or public support, which are obvious in Western Europe. This, in turn, means that the freedom of the media (from political pressure, because advertiser pressure has unfortunately been a daily reality for many editorial offices for a long time) depends to some extent on the good will of entities that view their presence solely in terms of investment balance. The regulations on the media market announced by PiS have a clear political undertone and serve to strengthen the influence of the single party, but paradoxically, the regulations themselves are not necessarily a bad idea."

-- AMBASSADOR MOSBACHER, OBSESSED WITH TVN, COULD WARN TRUMP ABOUT THE UNIVERSAL TESTING TRAP - MICHAŁ KARNOWSKI: "It is good that Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Minister of Health Łukasz Szumowski did not lose their cool during the crucial days, did not succumb to powerful pressure, but thought and relied on reliable knowledge. This is also the direction in which the analysis on these pages went. As a country, we avoided a trap that Trump fell into. He could have avoided it too. If Ambassador Mosbacher had been less obsessed with TVN and had occasionally spent some time reading wPolityce.pl, she might have warned the President. But apparently, she did not."

-- PLATFORMA IS INCREASINGLY BECOMING A PATRICIAN PARTY - PROF. JAROSŁAW FLIS IN CONVERSATION WITH GRZEGORZ SROCZYŃSKI ON GAZETA.PL: "First, it must understand its own problems. Platforma is becoming an increasingly patrician party. And at the same time, there is a divergence between the patricians and the people. In the Polish context, it's someone who is on 'first-name terms' with a doctor. At least one. That's my private definition, perhaps a bit simplistic, but it distinguishes the 'people' from the 'non-people' quite well. The people visit the doctor officially, while the patricians have him in their contact list."

-- FLIS ON VALIDATING TRUMP AND PIS IN THE EYES OF THE POPULACE, LIKE SLD ONCE DID: "But since all the other arrogant New York billionaires consider Trump their worst enemy, that's enough for the people. And it's similar here. Besides, it was exactly the same with SLD in the 90s, when the Solidarity elites, who had just carried out the transformation, began to wail in terror that 'communism is coming back,' and one newspaper even printed meat ration coupons as a warning. This panic among the Solidarity elites, of course, validated Kwaśniewski and Miller in the eyes of the people, who felt excluded at the time, and gave them electoral victory. One must evoke the aversion of the rest of the patricians so that those patricians who want to act as spokesmen for the people are recognized by the people as their own."

-- FLIS ON CLASSISM: "We do not fuss over the fact that PO is supported by young, educated people from big cities. This is a margin of its electorate, even if it includes journalists. There is a censorship clause in the Warsaw media for the words 'province' and 'periphery.' THERE ARE NO SUCH WORDS. They mean roughly as much as writing 'nigger' and 'faggot.' One gets fired for writing 'nigger,' but for writing 'the province won the Polish elections,' fellow journalists nod their heads: what insight! Perhaps one should be fired for that."

-- FLIS ON WHY BOTH DOMINANT PARTIES CAN ALLOW THEMSELVES A LOT: "If you are fighting an enemy who has mortal sins on their conscience - betrayal of the nation or destruction of democracy - then you can count on leniency towards your own common sins - incompetence or dishonesty. Because of this, our parties can afford quite a lot. PiS can afford many things that cry out to the heavens, incitement, the president's fits of rage - like the May 10 elections in the middle of a pandemic, they can afford Misiewiczes, Piebiaks, and yet voters will not abandon them, because where will they go? To those who consider them simpletons and PiS supporters? And similarly, Platforma can afford a lot - party cronyism in controlled local governments, sending compromised individuals to the European Parliament, keeping Schetyna in office for years, fielding Kidawa-Błońska, because why? Where will these voters go? To those who despise them and call them 'communists and thieves'? It's like a tug-of-war."

-- FLIS ON PROTECTIVE CONSERVATISM: "Because we have a balance of power. And one of the components of this balance is that so-called protective conservatism - something that the people expect and for which PiS has nominated itself as a representative - has been corrupted by 'Kaczynism' by this party. People get something in a package that many do not want at all, but without this package, they cannot buy it. Protective conservatism has combined with us with resentments, anger over years of 'being in the basement,' looking for 'connections' everywhere, reluctance to compromise, lack of ability to talk and reach an agreement, the need for such complete control that no one else has agency. And this is a great ball and chain for the conservative camp. Of course, the progressive part of the elites considers this an inherent feature of this offer for the people, but this is not true. The people vote for PiS not because of this part of the package, but in spite of it. That is why Kaczyński is hidden for the elections, because otherwise 'Kaczynism' would be too irritating. And PiS probably knows that this is their ball and chain."

-- LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN POLAND IS EXERCISED BY MODERATE CONSERVATIVES - FLIS CONTINUES: "Because it is visible. It is most striking in local governments. Local government in Poland is usually exercised by moderate conservatives. If you take a standard district town mayor, talk to him about various life issues, worldviews, or economic matters, and then look at the surveys, you will find that this mayor, with his views, perfectly matches the national average. Most often, he likes certain things about PiS, and despite that, he secretly considers them a party of idiots. He tries not to irritate PiS voters, but he fights with PiS and most often outmaneuvers them. Why? Because in his city, the leader of the local PiS is often a long-time frustrated individual."

-- FLIS ON HOW PO STILL WANTS TO ENLIGHTEN THE PEOPLE: "Returning to the problem of Platforma: there is a strong tension between the progressive camp, which would constantly want to enlighten the people and 'save Anielka,' and all those 'normals,' i.e., moderate conservatives who represent the 'national average' of views and in this regard are not so far from PiS, they are simply put off by the frustrated individuals. PiS terribly annoys them, but not because they have anything against the promotion of patriotism and family values, but because they are terrified by how PiS goes about it."

-- IT HAS DAWNED ON THE PLATFORM THAT THE FEAR OF ITS RETURN TO POWER IS GREATER THAN THE FEAR OF FURTHER PIS RULE - ADAM LESZCZYŃSKI IN KRYTYKA POLITYCZNA: "It has finally dawned on the new authorities of PO that under the old banner they will not win and that for many Poles - perhaps the majority, I am very sorry to say - the fear of PO returning to power is greater than the fear of further PiS rule. This may seem terrible, outrageous, and unfair to the melting group of media sycophants of the 'united opposition,' and at the same time - what a coincidence - fans of Platforma. They defend this lost cause with remarkable blindness. Nevertheless, PO politicians have already understood this problem. Tomasz Lis will finally understand it too."

-- THE PROPOSERS OF "NEW SOLIDARITY" ARE NOT WALKING ON SOLID GROUND - LESZCZYŃSKI CONTINUES: "Both the proposed name and the rhetoric surrounding this idea suggest that its creators are not treading very firmly on the ground. Because no, PiS is not PZPR, and 'new Solidarity' will not resemble the old one in anything other than its name. No, the 10 million votes for Trzaskowski - which are, of course, compared to the 10 million members of 'S' in 1981 - were not votes 'for' the candidate, but 'against' Duda and PiS."

-- SOCIAL MOVEMENTS ARE NOT MADE FROM THE TOP DOWN - ADAM LESZCZYŃSKI CONTINUES IN KRYTYKA POLITYCZNA: "In short: a social movement is not made from the top down. A social movement must talk about fresh values - not new, but previously infrequent in politics - and do so credibly. Credibility is the second problem of this undertaking. Trzaskowski was the leader of a coalition: his voters disagreed on almost everything, except that PiS should be removed from power. Among them were former KOD activists, Balcerowicz fans, apologists of the free market, convinced that 500+ is theft of money from their taxes; many of Biedroń's voters also voted for Trzaskowski. It is difficult to propose a common platform for them, apart from the rule of law, defense of free media and courts, and a general pro-European course. All other matters - even those that seem neutral - cause conflict."

-- A FEW RALLIES AND EVERYTHING WILL RETURN TO NORMAL - LESZCZYŃSKI'S CONCLUSION: "For a social movement to emerge, PO should dissolve itself - then perhaps it would have a sliver of a chance. So we will have a few rallies, some big, empty words, a few bombastic articles praising the movement in the bourgeois press - you know where - and then everything will return to normal. And PiS will continue to rule comfortably."

-- HOŁOWNIA COUNTERS PLATFORM: "When asked by PAP how he perceives this announcement, Hołownia noted that before Trzaskowski became the KO candidate in the presidential race, he had already openly spoken about the need to create a civic initiative. - We have been consistently and successfully building this movement for over six months. For now, from Civic Platform, we have heard an announcement of the establishment of a movement that does not yet exist. The largest opposition party after the lost elections is focusing on rebranding - he noted."

-- THIS IS A VISUAL LIFTING, NOT A SOCIAL MOVEMENT - HOŁOWNIA CONTINUES: "Asked what impact the creation of another initiative announced as civic might have on the 'Polska 2050' association, Hołownia assessed that his movement is based on a completely different foundation. - This is not a cosmetic facelift of a political party, but a movement built from the ground up - he emphasized. - Our way of thinking about politics is different. This way already exists, there is no need to feverishly develop it now. In our movement, there are people accustomed to being treated as subjects. People who come to us from very different places and want to work for the Republic together. Without party affiliations, without the party colors of PiS or PO. I am deeply convinced that civility must be rebuilt by opening up to both sides, by meeting around substantive, not ideological, issues - Hołownia stated.

--- HOŁOWNIA SUGGESTS PLAGIARISM OF HIS IDEAS: "Three weeks ago, I said that we would organize around collecting signatures for civic draft laws. Now I hear that this is also to be one of the main tasks of the movement currently being formed by Civic Platform. They have a party in the Sejm, they don't need to write civic projects, they just need to submit them as parliamentary bills - he noted."

-- MICHAŁ KOLANKO IN RZ ON RIVALRY ON THE OPPOSITION SIDE: "The rivalry within the opposition before the next elections is just starting. The inauguration of Rafał Trzaskowski's civic movement is planned for September 5, in line with his announcement from Gdynia. Perhaps earlier, a meeting announced by Szymon Hołownia will take place. He and his supporters react ironically to the fact that the KO candidate in the elections is announcing the creation of his own political movement. Other opposition politicians are also preparing their own plans. Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the leader of PSL, announced last week that he would soon present a proposal for the entire opposition. However, the leader of the peasant party firmly ruled out the concept that the opposition needs to unite all forces."

-- IT WASN'T TVP THAT WON THE ELECTIONS - PROF. PIOTR OSĘKA IN OKO: "After watching eight episodes of "Wiadomości" back-to-back, I feel like I'm breathing mustard gas. I wonder if anyone other than the activists of the "Gazeta Polska" Clubs can watch these programs. That's why I disagree with the common opinion that Duda's victory is due to TVP propaganda. From a historical perspective, it is evident how often the role of institutional propaganda is overestimated.
- In 1989, the PZPR lost terribly, even though it had exclusive access to television, radio, almost all newspapers, and the entire state administrative apparatus.
- A year later, Stanisław Tymiński reached the second round of the presidential elections without even a single favorable newspaper behind him.
- In 2015, PiS twice defeated Platforma, having a much more modest media base than its opponent."

-- TVP IS ACTUALLY COUNTERPRODUCTIVE - DUDA WON DESPITE THE HATRED-INDUCING PARTY BULLETIN - OSĘKA CONTINUES IN OKO: "Meanwhile, what TVP is doing today is not only repulsive but also counterproductive. For every mobilized Duda voter, there are probably two Trzaskowski supporters who went to the polls enraged by the vileness pouring from public media and terrified by a politician who espouses such slogans. (...) Duda won against Trzaskowski rather in spite of than thanks to the news services cheering him on. This does not change the fact that turning public media into a hatred-inciting party bulletin was immoral and illegal."

-- IF THE OPPOSITION ALWAYS PULLS OUT THE HEAVY GUNS OF CRITICISM AGAINST A POPULIST GOVERNMENT, AT SOME POINT VOTERS WILL CLOSE THEIR EARS - Jan-Werner Müller, a professor writing about populism in an interview with Anna Wójcik in OKO.press: "Let's take the United States, where the Democrats - rightly - opposed the repeal of the Affordable Care Act [a reform of the healthcare system introduced in 2010 by Barack Obama, also known as Obamacare - ed.]. They presented this matter as a matter of life or death for democracy. But changes in the healthcare system do not mean the end of democracy. This dispute falls within the bounds of debate. If the opposition always pulls out the heaviest guns of criticism against every action of a right-wing, populist government, at some point voters will close their ears. Such criticism is easily discredited by saying that the opposition dislikes everything that Trump or Kaczyński does. Therefore, it is important for the opposition to be able to operate at two speeds - to assume the usual role of substantive criticism, but sometimes to raise the alarm when it truly concerns the fate of democracy, effectively mobilizing even those who disagree with other demands. This will not be a panacea for all ills. But surely in Poland too, opposition parties could learn a lot in this regard."

-- MAŁGORZATA TRZASKOWSKA ON HER ACTIVITY PLAN FOR THE NEXT SIX MONTHS - TELLS WP: "Currently, she is preparing an activity plan for the second half of the year. - During my travels around Poland, I saw how great the need is to talk about women's issues, what challenges and problems lie ahead of us, which we women can solve together. We are currently developing, with a group of wonderful, committed women, a plan for the coming months - admits Rafał Trzaskowski's wife."

-- ADAM SZOSTKIEWICZ CALLS ON THE CHURCH TO SPEAK OUT ON EXCLUSIVE RHETORIC: "Let's not be provoked into explaining that we are not camels. Let's reject attempts to reduce Polishness to belonging to PiS and the voters of President Duda. Let's ask Kaczyński and his followers how his words align with the biographies, words, and deeds of people in the current ruling elite. Let's not be afraid to say: 'I call you on it.' We should expect everyone who is level-headed in the United Right camp to disassociate themselves from this pedagogy of contempt and politics of fear. Let people of the Church have the courage to speak. This is the moment."

-- IS THIS THE KIND OF VALUES WE'RE TALKING ABOUT AS DURING SATURDAY'S CEREMONY IN ŁAGIEWNIKI? - MICHAŁ SZUŁDRZYŃSKI IN RZ: "The entire dignity policy in this case appears to be a reaction to complexes, not a positive building of national pride. However, Kaczyński did not hide his satisfaction with the election results. 'It was a civilizational clash,' he said. The stakes were supposed to be traditional values, Christianity, and the protection of family. However, it is worth remembering that this is purely empty rhetoric. For all those who want to absolve PiS for allegedly standing on the right side of the civilizational dispute, I recommend spending a moment looking at the photos from Saturday's ceremony in Łagiewniki, Krakow. Is this the kind of values we're talking about?"

-- GW IN AN ARTICLE ABOUT JACKA KURSKI'S SON AND MOLESTATION: "Zdzisław Kurski, Jacek's eldest son, started hurting me when I was nine years old, and when it came out in 2015, the case was dismissed twice. I no longer trust the justice system - says Magda Nowakowska from Trójmiasto."

-- GW ON KURSKI'S TESTIMONY: "Heard as a witness, the TVP president stated earlier that his former assistant is using his own child to falsely accuse Zdzisław Antoni. According to Jacek Kurski, Magda's father allegedly met in 2014 with PiS politicians, including: Pomeranian councilor Piotr Zwara, Pomeranian MP and friend of Jarosław Kaczyński, Jolanta Szczypińska (witnessed by PiS MP from Gdynia, Zbigniew Kozak), and advisor to the TVP board, Jan Maria Tomaszewski (cousin of Jarosław Kaczyński). According to Jacek Kurski, Magda's father assured these people that he was willing to forget his daughter's suffering, 'if he received the position of vice-president of Lotos,' which he was seeking at the time."

-- GW UNCOVERS THE LENIENCY OF POMERANIAN LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES: "The leniency of Pomeranian law enforcement agencies, control bodies, and some courts towards influential or wealthy residents of Trójmiasto - as well as the exceptional treatment of their children - is nothing new."

-- GW ON HOW EASY IT IS FOR THE POWERFUL TO NAVIGATE THE TRÓJMIASTO SALONS...: "The main protagonist of the Amber Gold affair, Marcin P., had nine criminal cases for fraud (totaling nearly PLN 0.5 million) and despite being banned from holding positions in financial institutions, he founded a pyramid scheme. Although he did not settle accounts with the tax office or the registry court, and although the Financial Supervision Authority warned against his activities, the police did not come for him until the entire fraud was on the news covers and people had lost their money. Earlier, P. co-financed a film about Lech Wałęsa, the zoo in Oliwa, and knew the main representatives of the city and provincial authorities personally."

-- STATEMENT FROM THE EDITORS-IN-CHIEF OF GW: "The disclosure of this drastic case is in the public interest. It is the victim's last chance for justice and compensation for her harm. Due to family ties, Jarosław Kurski, First Deputy Editor-in-Chief of "Gazeta Wyborcza," did not participate in any stage of the creation or editing of the report nor did he participate in the decision to publish. He recused himself from the case."

-- PHOTO. Isaac Levitan, Summer Evening, Летний вечер, Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

Levitan's first exhibition noticed by the press was in 1877. Two years later, in May 1879, due to a wave of anti-Jewish demonstrations in Russia, he was forced to move to the Moscow suburb of Saltykovka (Салтыковка), but soon, under public pressure and in recognition of his work, he was allowed to return. In 1880, his painting "Autumn Day. Sokolniki" (Осенний день. Сокольники) was purchased by the renowned art collector and philanthropist Pavel Tretyakov, founder of the Tretyakov Gallery.

The Guardian wrote that it would be hard to imagine a more beautiful depiction of summer evening light transforming a field into fire than this gently glowing painting. "The parched road begins among cooling shadows in the foreground, hidden where we stand, and stretches across the still warm field to the trees in the distance. It feels like the beginning of autumn, certainly the end of summer tenancy. Levitan was a master of the 'mood landscape,' which, with a touch of melancholy, captures the subtle beauty of provincial Russia. A close friend and favorite artist of Chekhov, he died a few months later at the age of 39.
