Józef Mehoffer's "Strange Garden" is a composition that clearly goes beyond the category of a portrait of the artist's closest individuals. It was created during the painter's and his family's summer holiday in Siedlec near Krakow in 1902, but was ultimately completed in 1903, as indicated by the signature. Shown publicly in the following three years in Vienna, St. Louis, Chicago, and Munich, it gained the appreciation of jurors and official awards. The painting is filled with the atmosphere of a hot summer. It is filled with lush green trees and grass, colorful flowers, intense sun, branches bent under the weight of ripening fruit. The color palette ranges from green interwoven with brown and gray shades of trunks, through small accents of meadow colors, to larger patches of flowers held by a boy and colorful strings of garlands encircling the trees. The different coloration of individual figures breaks the fresh and joyful natural tone, but the whole is bound together by a special luminosity. A characteristic feature of the composition is the limitation of the field of vision. The viewer looks from a short distance into the garden, without encompassing its boundaries with their gaze. The canvas shows only a fragment of space, which feels rather cramped, framed by a mass of greenery.
