The State of Play: PiS Campaign Staff Believe They've Overcome Troubles, Duda Accuses of Agitation While Running an Agitated Campaign, Karnowski Recalls Era of Same-Message TV Channels Controlled by a Remote

It doesn't have to. During the presidential debates five years ago, Bronisław Komorowski pointed out two votes to Andrzej Duda that were inconvenient for him. In one, as a Member of Parliament, Duda abstained from voting on the presidential bill concerning placing an eagle on the Polish national team's jerseys, and in another, as a Member of the European Parliament, he did not participate in the vote on a European Parliament resolution that called for action regarding Christians threatened by the Islamic State. These shots did Komorowski no good. Voters were set for change, and he lost the election." -- DUDA'S SUCCESS WAS TO QUIET DOWN THE LGBT ISSUE WHEN IT STARTED TO HARM HIM, ALTHOUGH CAMPAIGN STAFF SUGGESTED A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT - CONTINUES STANKIEWICZ: "But Trzaskowski's retirement gaffe gave a respite to Andrzej Duda's campaign, who, after all, unleashed a war over LGBT a week ago and had to retreat from it for several days. Duda's success is that he managed to quiet down the issue of sexual minorities when it started to harm him. He did not listen to some of his campaign staff who advised him to play this card even harder and propose amendments to the Constitution preventing same-sex unions and adoption by them. Since the televised debate last Wednesday, Duda has been avoiding this topic, and the anti-gay hawks of PiS — such as his campaign staffer Przemysław Czarnek — have been banned from public appearances." -- UNEMPLOYMENT AT THE END OF THE PIIS GOVERNMENT, WHEN DUDA WAS DEPUTY MINISTER, WAS 11.2% - CONTINUES STANKIEWICZ: "The snag is that we don't yet know the scale of unemployment after the pandemic; it will take a few months. Moreover, unemployment at the end of the PO-PSL government (9.7% at the end of 2015) was lower than unemployment at the end of the first PiS government, during which Duda was deputy minister (11.2% at the end of 2007). Can any valid conclusions be drawn from this?" https://wiadomosci.onet.pl/tylko-w-onecie/wybory-2020-prezydent-w-ortalionie-czyli-andrzej-duda-ratuje-powodzian-w-kampanii/1pyhsrp -- THE CAMPAIGN IS NOT A GYMNASTICS COMPETITION, STYLE POINTS DON'T COUNT HERE, THE GOAL IS TO MOBILIZE - RAFAŁ KALUKIN IN POLITYKA: "A voter wavering between supporting Duda and Trzaskowski is a natural anomaly. From this perspective, the aggressive tactics of Duda's staff become logical. An election campaign is not a gymnastics competition; style points don't count here. Actions are taken to mobilize as many of one's own voters as possible and to encourage the opponent's electorate to stay home. Sometimes it's more profitable to invest in the former, other times the latter becomes more important. And this is precisely the case for Duda at the current stage of the campaign." -- DUDA'S MOBILIZATION CAPACITY PEAK IS 9 MILLION, HE CAN FEEL SAFE WITH A TURNOUT BELOW 60% - CONTINUES KALUKIN: "In this situation, Duda's strategists have already started positioning themselves for the latter. And no wonder, as further polls provide them with increasingly alarming conclusions. The president has just lost a slight advantage over Trzaskowski in simulations of a decisive showdown, and the trend clearly favors the KO candidate today. The key to understanding the situation is turnout. According to most forecasts, the peak mobilization capacity of the PiS candidate is slightly over 9 million votes. Duda can therefore feel safe with a turnout below 60%. However, the higher it rises above this level, the more the scales tip in favor of his rival. And in recent polls, declared turnout is increasingly boldly pushing towards a previously unbelievable level of 70%!" -- THE BARRAGE AIMED AT TRZASKOWSKI IS MEANT TO DEMOBILIZE HIS VOTERS - CONTINUES KALUKIN: "Therefore, lacking the ability to gain new votes, Duda's campaign staff have gambled on demobilizing Trzaskowski's base. Hence the constant barrage aimed at him. These actions, of course, further mobilize the hard-core voters of the KO candidate, who are now chanting at rallies: 'We've had enough!' But in the overall balance, Trzaskowski's more moderate electorate, who also sympathize with other opposition candidates, is far more important. It is precisely to them that PiS is now desperately trying to make the president's main rival repulsive. And they will certainly continue to do so until the very end of this campaign." -- HE THREATENS WITH AGITATION WHILE RUNNING AN AGITATED CAMPAIGN - CONTINUES RAFAŁ KALUKIN: "Although he is increasingly striking out blindly, he also falls into narrative contradictions. On the one hand, he promises five years of peace and threatens with the agitation of the 'total opposition.' On the other hand, he himself is an agitator in this campaign, and at the same time, highly unstable, moving at a variable pace, chaotic, and uncertain of himself. And ultimately, this could negatively affect the mobilization of his own electorate." https://www.polityka.pl/tygodnikpolityka/kraj/1960964,1,tydzien-kampanii-dwa-spoty-dwa-swiaty.read -- MICHAŁ KARNOWSKI CONTRASTS KOMOROWSKI'S REACTION TO PEOPLE PRAYING IN FRONT OF THE PALACE IN 2010 WITH DUDA'S REACTION TO AN ANTI-PIIS EXHIBITION DURING DUDA'S TENURE: "However, looking for specifics, I propose to look at two situations, two series of photos. I took both personally, almost exactly ten years apart, in the exact same location. Bronisław Komorowski was already in the Presidential Palace, having brutally seized power when it wasn't yet certain the president was dead, and then winning the election. People wanting to commemorate the deaths of 96 people were chased away from the Palace; there was a struggle over the cross, praying people were attacked by urban combat groups, and the Palace was sealed off. And here are some photos from June 2020. Andrzej Duda is the president. An installation with alleged 'scandals' of the Law and Justice government has been set up under the Presidential Palace, most of which are projections of the views and fabrications/speculations of Michnik's circles and TVN. But it's not about the truth of the accusations here, but about the right to express one's opinions. Even the most untrue, even dishonest, even offensive ones. No one is putting up barriers, no one is sending in combat groups." -- WITH THE REMOTE CONTROL, WE HAD ACCESS TO DIFFERENT CHANNELS THAT SAID THE SAME THING, AND NOW WE HAVE A CHOICE OF DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW - CONTINUES MICHAŁ KARNOWSKI: "When was there more freedom and normalcy in Poland? When could one demonstrate one's beliefs in front of the Presidential Palace? Who was/is a dictator – Komorowski or Duda? When, with the remote control, we had access to different channels, but with the same approach to reality, and when do we have a choice of programs presenting truly different points of view?" https://wpolityce.pl/polityka/505648-dwa-zdjecia-i-pytanie-kto-naprawde-jest-zamordysta -- THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE 2015 CAMPAIGN IS RETURNING, DUDA IS THE MORE DYNAMIC SIDE - JACEK KARNOWSKI: "Today, Andrzej Duda is the offensive, more dynamic, more visible side. Field meetings are crucial, showing that millions of Poles truly stand behind the president. Meetings that awaken supporters of good change, somewhat lulled by years of electoral success. Meetings that most effectively shatter the opposition's narrative about Poles who 'have had enough' and now want to wrap themselves in a rainbow flag. The atmosphere of the 2015 campaign is returning. Incidentally, this is precisely why the aggression of the Third Polish Republic is rising so sharply. It is an attempt to intimidate, an attempt to push supporters of good change into a kind of ghetto. It is an attempt to turn back time to the period before 2015." -- PATRIOTIC POLAND HAS FINALLY MOVED, IF DUDA DOESN'T LOSE MOMENTUM, HE WILL WIN - JACEK KARNOWSKI'S CONCLUSION: "The decisive weeks lie ahead. There will be many more twists and turns, but I will risk the thesis that if Andrzej Duda does not lose momentum, if he continues to convince Poles so diligently and energetically, he will win. Especially since patriotic Poland has finally stirred." https://wpolityce.pl/m/polityka/505640-trzaskowski-zostal-powstrzymany-ton-nadaje-andrzej-duda -- DUDA WAS THE WEAKEST LINK IN THE PIIS CHAIN, NONE OF HIS INITIATIVES SUCCEEDED - PAWEŁ WROŃSKI IN GW: "The same Andrzej Duda who attacked the system of power five years ago is now defending his power. In 2015, however, he was supposed to be independent and self-reliant; now, from the beginning of the campaign, he presents himself as an element of the entire PiS power system. Until now, he has been the weakest link in this chain, whose almost all personal initiatives have failed." -- HOŁOWNIA POINTS OUT DUDA'S FLAWS MOST ACCURATELY FROM A CITIZEN'S PERSPECTIVE - CONTINUES WROŃSKI: "Paradoxically, now that a duo of strong candidates has formed, the others are presenting themselves in the best possible light. In Opole, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz delivered one of his best speeches, as did Robert Biedroń in Warsaw. Szymon Hołownia is currently the politician who most accurately points out Duda's flaws from the perspective of a citizen who 'would like to be proud of their president.' Krzysztof Bosak, on the other hand, with his softened national program, has become a more charismatic candidate from the right than Andrzej Duda." https://wyborcza.pl/7,75398,26053654,duopol-rzadzi-peleton-nie-dogoni.html -- A DOUBTFUL GAME ON TRUMP - JĘDRZEJ BIELECKI ON JEDYNKA RZ: "The White House links the transfer of US troops to Poland with their reduction in Germany. Congress wants to block this. And Donald Trump's chances of re-election are dwindling, which undermines the value of his promises." -- REPUBLICANS ARE STARTING TO DISTANCE THEMSELVES FROM TRUMP - STATES BIELECKI: "The initiative is supported not only by Democrats but also by Republicans. – More and more Republicans believe that Trump has lost his chance for re-election and wants to distance themselves from him to save their congressional seats. The president makes grand declarations that do not always translate into reality. Playing for him may bring short-term gains to the Polish authorities, but it may not necessarily prove beneficial for the country in the long run, especially if Joe Biden wins – says Prof. Hal Brands from Johns Hopkins University to 'Rzeczpospolita'."https://www.rp.pl/Dyplomacja/200629940-Wizyta-prezydenta-w-Waszyngtonie-Watpliwa-gra-na-Trumpa.html -- TWO FORTS TRUMP AND EVEN THE NETHERLANDS - CONTINUES HASZCZYŃSKI IN RZ: "He can promise anything: thousands of soldiers transferred from Germany, two Forts Trump, even the Netherlands – but little will come of it. His idea of withdrawing from Germany is encountering great resistance, including within his Republican Party. And what resistance! 85% of Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee believe that Trump would thus threaten America's security and strengthen Russia." -- ANYTHING CAN BE EXPECTED FROM TRUMP - CONTINUES HASZCZYŃSKI: "Anything can be expected from President Trump, including on June 24th, when President Duda will be in Washington. Unfortunately, it is difficult to see any positive scenario for Poland in this. (...) Our security is not suitable for electioneering sausage. Never, and especially now." https://www.rp.pl/Komentarze/200629941-Jerzy-Haszczynski-Dwa-Forty-Trump-plus-Niderlandy.html -- A DISGUSTING, NON-SUBSTANTIVE, PURELY ASSOCIATION-BASED NEGATIVE CAMPAIGN AGAINST TRZASKOWSKI - WRITES BOGUSŁAW CHRABOTA IN RZ: "The risk of Andrzej Duda's trip a few days before the election is considerable. It might not work. Similarly, the rather disgusting, non-substantive, and purely association-based campaign under the slogan 'Rafał, don't lie.'" https://www.rp.pl/Komentarze/200629942-Boguslaw-Chrabota-Andrzej-Duda-na-zakrecie.html -- DUDA REPRESENTS WHAT HE PREVIOUSLY CONTESTED, BY FOLLOWING IN KOMOROWSKI'S FOOTSTEPS HE MAY USHER IN THE END OF PIIS RULE - JACEK NIZINKIEWICZ IN RZ: "Andrzej Duda has also forgotten about the medical fund promised in March or the construction of a mask factory in Stalowa Wola under the auspices of the head of state. The PiS candidate declared he would not be a notary of the government, yet he signed over a thousand laws, more than his predecessor. Five years ago, he attacked TVP and the government for running President Bronisław Komorowski's election campaign. Today, the United Right government and state media do not hide that they are subordinating their actions to the head of state's re-election. Nothing remains of the Andrzej Duda from five years ago. He represents what he previously contested. By following in President Komorowski's footsteps, he may usher in the end of PiS rule. For Bronisław Komorowski, the polls were also favorable until the very end." https://www.rp.pl/Analizy/200629949-Jacek-Nizinkiewicz-Prezydent-zaprzecza-Andrzejowi-Dudzie.html -- MICHAŁ DANIELEWSKI IN OKO PRAISES TRZASKOWSKI'S SPOT - A STORY TOLD IN A FRESH LANGUAGE: "The spot clearly aims to remove the image of Trzaskowski as a 'representative of big-city elites,' which is an imposed stereotype for a candidate serving as the mayor of Warsaw. Trzaskowski's story is told in a very fresh language, the film is skillfully made, and stands out among other election commercials. It was well received by commentators from both sides of the political barricade." https://oko.press/swietny-spot-trzaskowskiego-nieudany-dudy/ -- DUDA'S EXTREMIST STATEMENTS WERE NOT MISSING - TOMASZ SAWCZUK IN KULTURA LIBERALNA: "Excluding dishonest assistance, Andrzej Duda's campaign is still searching for a good idea for itself. In recent days, the ruling camp's candidate has primarily returned to the narrative that Poland should achieve a standard of living 'like in Western countries' as quickly as possible. It is difficult, however, to reconcile how one can show hostility towards everything coming from the West, 'from Berlin,' or 'from Brussels' for half the time, and then claim that we should live like in the West. We cannot solve this puzzle at the moment. Duda's statements did not lack further extremist remarks. In Krakow, the ruling camp's candidate said that the PO-PSL governments were 'a worse virus than the coronavirus.'" -- THE PIIS SPOT SHOWS THAT THE MOMENTUM IS CURRENTLY WITH TRZASKOWSKI BECAUSE HE IS DEFENSIVE - CONTINUES SAWCZUK: "Andrzej Duda's campaign office published a spot in response, in which 'Poland,' in the voice of a narrator, holds Rafał Trzaskowski accountable for his statements and potential weaknesses. The spot is quite amusing, even farcical, which at the same time makes it seem lighter than Trzaskowski's proposal – and it is entirely defensive and reactive. Consequently, it turns out that the momentum is with Trzaskowski, and Duda's spot is clearly intended to sow doubts about Trzaskowski among less mobilized voters. In response, Platforma published another video, in which it holds Andrzej Duda accountable for unfulfilled promises." -- SAWCZUK BELIEVES HOŁOWNIA MADE A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION TO THE CAMPAIGN: "Polls suggest that Hołownia has no chance of reaching the second round of the elections, but his overall impact on the election campaign should be considered positive – unlike other candidates, Hołownia built his campaign around issues that truly matter from the perspective of the presidential office he is running for. At the same time, he could speak about these issues without prior entanglements, which brought some freshness to public debate. The election campaign has become at least a little more substantive thanks to Hołownia's stance." https://kulturaliberalna.pl/2020/06/22/sawczuk-w-poniedzialek-ostatni-tydzien-kampanii-pis-korumpuje-polakow-wozami-strazackimi/ -- ANOTHER GAFFE WILL BURY TRZASKOWSKI - AGATON KOZIŃSKI IN WP: "This gaffe has not yet ruled out his chances for the presidency – but another one will bury them definitively. The election result is still very close. Today, it is as likely that Duda will win in the first round as it is that he and Trzaskowski will advance to the second round with results in the high thirties. The last few days will decide. And the outcome of the first round will be determined by who has the better idea for the campaign finale – and who manages to avoid mistakes more effectively." https://opinie.wp.pl/po-sondazu-wp-kozinski-wybory-wygra-ten-kto-lepiej-opanuje-emocje-i-zrobi-mniej-bledow-opinia-6523900959988608a -- ONET ON THE FAILURE OF FERRY CONSTRUCTION IN SZCZECIN: "A large ferry for Polish shipowners, the construction of which was championed by leading PiS politicians, has still not been built. Three years after the grand plans were announced, there is neither a ferry nor a project. It is not even known how much the entire undertaking will cost. It is uncertain whether the ship will be built at all." https://wiadomosci.onet.pl/tylko-w-onecie/trzecia-rocznica-polozenia-stepki-pod-prom-widmo-temat-powoli-umiera/ejtx5ln -- WIFE OF AN SLD BARON DEPUTY HEAD OF THE SENATE CHANCELLERY - RZ: "Dr Karolina Zioło-Pużuk is a specialist in teaching Polish as a foreign language. At UKSW, she heads the School of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners. Her scientific publications include 'Drama and Music in the Polish as a Foreign Language Class' or 'How a Speech Therapist Can Help a Foreign Child?'. She has unexpectedly also proven to be a specialist in organizing Senate work. On June 15th, Marshal Tomasz Grodzki appointed her as deputy head of the Senate Chancellery, a position at the rank of deputy minister. To employ her, the Senate voted to amend its regulations. It created the position of deputy head of the chancellery in place of the abolished position of director-general." https://www.rp.pl/Polityka/200629948-Lewicowy-desant-w-kancelarii-Senatu.html -- THE VILLAGE VOTES FOR DUDA, BUT NOT THE FARMERS - KRYSTYNA NASZKOWSKA IN GW: "All of Poland is grateful to the farmers for food security. And we saw what this means at the beginning of the pandemic, when we were buying up food from stores, yet there was no shortage at any point – this is how President Andrzej Duda fought for the farmers' votes a week before the election silence. At a rally in Jędrzejów, he praised 'magnificent Polish food' which is gaining more and more supporters worldwide. And he received applause from the people gathered in the town square for his words. Were there farmers there? I doubt it. The president avoids meetings with farmers. And rightly so, because he wouldn't necessarily receive applause. If, for example, President Andrzej Duda were to appear in Wielkopolska in the Stęszew commune, farmer Franciszek Nowak would ask him why he signed the amendment to the act on the management of state agricultural real estate, the so-called land act, which is destroying farmers like him – who have large farms, produce significant amounts of food for the domestic market and for export. All this to please farmers who, in essence, do not deserve this name because they do not sell food from their farms, but they do vote in elections." https://wyborcza.pl/7,75968,26050994,andrzej-duda-prezydent-wsi-ale-nie-rolnikow.html -- HE IS MEANT TO BE AN ARBITER, THE PROGRAM GETS LOST IN A MAZE OF TOO MANY THREADS - KAROLINA OLEJAK IN KLUB JAGIELLOŃSKI ON WKK'S PROGRAM: "Kosiniak-Kamysz's program presents a clear vision of the presidency. The peasant candidate is to be an arbiter and mediator of inter-tribal wars. The proposal to introduce a referendum day is the biggest plus. We have been promoting this idea for several years. We often feel the lack of citizen voice. Tax-free retirement, voluntary social security contributions, or the idea of establishing a National Health Fund are pure populism. Most of the candidate's ideas are not tailored to the office of president. The distinct message gets lost in a maze of too many threads." https://klubjagiellonski.pl/2020/06/19/wladyslaw-kosiniak-kamysz-pigulka-programowa-zbyt-wiele-srok-zlapanych-za-ogon/ -- 2ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF MARSHAL OLGA KRZYŻANOWSKA. Photo. PAP from the ALDE exhibition at the EP https://www.flickr.com/photos/aldeadle/4806219170/ -- WE HAVE THANKED THE LADIES, NOW WE WILL RULE - FRAGMENT FROM THE BOOK "OLGA, DAUGHTER OF THE WOLF": "I thought, perhaps because of my experiences in 'Solidarity,' that women in politics are extremely necessary. Because they do the hardest work, and then they are told: 'Alright, we've thanked the ladies, now we will rule.' It's not said aloud, but that's the way things are. I often said that I came to the Sejm only because I was raised by women, and then there was 'Solidarity,' where I worked in the Health Service Section. Women also formed the majority there, doctors or nurses. Back then, I didn't understand the distinctness of women's issues. I thought that we all from 'Solidarity' were fighting for the same thing, like in the Home Army. Only over time did I realize that many women who had made great contributions disappeared. And men were proclaimed heroes." http://www.publio.pl/olga-corka-wilka-aldona-wisniewska,p237832.html -- RZ WROTE ABOUT THE TEAM OF 22 WOMEN FROM THE OMP: "Ultimately, as we mentioned, the names of 22 women appeared on the Solidarity electoral lists. Among the candidates for the Sejm were women with incredibly interesting biographies. It is enough to mention Maria Dmochowska, a doctor, a participant in the Warsaw Uprising; Józefa Hennelowa, a writer, a publicist associated with 'Tygodnik Powszechny' for years; or Olga Krzyżanowska, already mentioned, daughter of the legendary commander of the AK in the Vilnius region, Aleksander Krzyżanowski 'Wilk,' a scout of the Grey Ranks. Also running were Hanna Suchocka, an experienced MP serving in the 8th term of the Sejm (1980–1985), Grażyna Staniszewska, who participated in the Round Table talks, and Adela Dankowska, who broke world records in gliding. What certainly united them was social engagement, activity in the opposition, in Solidarity, for some, fighting in the Home Army and internment during martial law. They undoubtedly enjoyed respect in their communities." https://www.rp.pl/Plus-Minus/306069939-Wybory-4-czerwca-Szturm-kobiet-na-parlament.html -- BIRTHDAYS: Henryk Woźniakowski, Adam Szostkiewicz, Elżbieta Rafalska, Andrzej Machowski, Kazimiera Szczuka, Magdalena Rigamonti, Ireneusz Krzemiński.
