STATE OF PLAY: Duda Wanted a Clash with the Opposition on Crisis Prescriptions, Premier Suchocka Receives an Award, Szułdrzyński: Trzaskowski, Unlike Kidawa, Quickly Showed What Poland He Stands For, Karnowski: The Divide of "Solidary Poland" vs. "Turbolib

-- HANNA SUCHOCKA COMMENTS ON THE JAN NOWAK-JEZIORAŃSKI AWARD - in RZ: “The Jan Nowak-Jeziorański Award is, first and foremost, a great surprise to me – Hanna Suchocka tells „Rzeczpospolita”. – I am particularly pleased, especially on such a personal level, that it is an award established by Jan Nowak-Jeziorański, because from the very beginning of the transformation, and especially when I became Prime Minister, I had frequent contact with him – she recalls. – In our private dealings, he always called me Hanka, and I called him uncle. We had pleasant and warm relations, and I never assumed, nor did I even imagine, that I might one day receive an award that he established – she adds.”

-- PRESIDENT KOMOROWSKI TURNS 68.
-- THE PRESIDENT SUBMITTED HIS PROPOSAL TO THE PRIME MINISTER A FEW DAYS AGO, DETAILS WERE FINALIZED YESTERDAY AT THE ATM BUILDING - BEHIND THE SCENES OF DUDA AND MORAWIECKI'S PLAN FOR A PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE ON A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE - ACCORDING TO 300POLITYKA SOURCES President Duda proposed this move to Mateusz Morawiecki a few days ago during a direct conversation. The final decision was made yesterday after an event concerning the CPK (Central Communication Port) in the ATM hall. The President and the Prime Minister asked their associates to leave them alone in the lounge at ATM, and for several dozen minutes they discussed the details of the operation, which was a surprise to most of their political support. Those familiar with the course of the conversation tell us that the President strongly emphasized the necessity of showing full unity and stability of the parliamentary majority. PAD (Andrzej Duda) convinced the Prime Minister that a clear clash with the opposition on the prescriptions for protection against the crisis was needed.

-- DUDA IS BEATING AROUND THE BUSH ON A JUST CAUSE - TOMASZ ULANOWSKI IN GW: “When Andrzej Duda is beating around the bush on a just cause, know that something is happening. (...) A garden pond in every home – this is a new element of the presidential campaign. Even though the president is casting a wink at voters, it's not Duda who is proposing the 'My Water' program, but the Ministry of Climate. This is an excellent prelude to the necessary revolution in water management in Poland.”

-- SE REPORTS ON A POLL IN WHICH PAD IS CLOSE TO RE-ELECTION IN THE FIRST ROUND: “A secret PiS poll obtained by „Super Express” gives Andrzej Duda a chance to secure 48.6% of the vote on June 28th. If the party mobilizes a new electorate by the elections, Duda will have re-election secured in the first round! The results of a poll commissioned by PiS indicate such a possibility. Taking into account the potential votes of undecided voters, Duda will gain 48.64% of the votes in the first round. To win the election, his support must be over 50%, which means he is very close. Rafał Trzaskowski from KO, his biggest rival for the most important office in the state, will only get 24.29% of the votes in the first round.”
-- MOBILIZATION LIKE IN THE EUROPEAN ELECTIONS WOULD HAVE TO HAPPEN, AND WITH HIGH TURNOUT, PIS DOESN'T BREAK THROUGH 45% - RAFAŁ CHWEDORUK IN A COMMENT IN SE: “What can PiS do to achieve this goal? – We need to recreate the high mobilization of the electorate from the European Parliament elections. There also needs to be a low turnout. With high turnout, PiS cannot break through with more than 45% support, which means a second round – explains political scientist Rafał Chwedoruk (51). – It will be difficult for Andrzej Duda to gain new votes. Only a suicidal mistake by his opponents, primarily Rafał Trzaskowski, will give him a chance – he adds.”

-- WPOLITYCE PUBLISHES ITS POLL WHERE PAD HAS 41, TRZASKOWSKI 29: “In our survey, 41% of respondents declared their intention to vote for Andrzej Duda – an increase of 1 point compared to the previous wave of our research. Rafał Trzaskowski, the candidate for the Civic Coalition, was indicated by 29% of respondents – 2 points more than previously. Szymon Hołownia can count on 12% of respondents – a decrease of 5 points. Krzysztof Bosak, the Konfederacja candidate, was indicated by 6% of respondents – no change.”

-- WE ONCE AGAIN HAVE A CLASSIC DIVIDE - SOLIDARY POLAND AND TURBOLIBERAL POLAND - MICHAŁ KARNOWSKI: “But at the same time, the way he did it significantly reduced his chances in the second round. Poles saw a classic politician of the Third Republic – unable to tolerate media criticism, arrogant, self-infatuated, convinced that the villa districts of big cities constitute all of Poland, scheming how to 're-educate' the rest. We once again have a classic divide: Solidary Poland (Duda) versus Turboliberal Poland (Trzaskowski), one respecting values versus the one promoting LGBT, national versus Warsaw-centric. It's worth remembering that the president of the capital also has an advantage stemming from not participating in the previous phase of the competition – the other candidates are naturally very tired; it's an exhausting race.”
-- STIRRING UP THE RIGHT WING - KARNOWSKI ON PUBLICATIONS SUGGESTING OBAJTEK WOULD BECOME PRIME MINISTER: “But various opposition 'weasels' report that the opposition's plan for Trzaskowski's campaign includes another element – sowing discord within the United Right camp. What was so effective in the case of the election date is to be repeated. The opposition realizes it will be more difficult, as likely no one will show such naivety and irresponsibility as some politicians did at that time. Nevertheless, they are not giving up. This discord is to be achieved by awakening the ambitions of some and alarming others. Various configurations of names will be attempted. The first pairing has already been selected. Three newspapers simultaneously published identically worded speculations, completely unfounded, about the alleged prime ministerial ambitions of PKN Orlen CEO Daniel Obajtek and plans to replace Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki with him. What's more, the 'ziobryści' (supporters of Zbigniew Ziobro) are supposedly behind this plan.”
-- KARNOWSKI ON OBAJTEK - HIS DEPARTURE FROM ORLEN WOULD BE MADNESS NOW: “CEO Obajtek has so accelerated investments at Orlen and the development of this concern that his departure now would be madness. He has never declared political ambitions to anyone. The Prime Minister's position is very strong, and the government's results – including navigating through the epidemic – are sensational. Both gentlemen value each other and cooperate. No meeting has taken place where such a scenario would have been discussed. In short – pure fantasy, spread by people relying on shadows of rumors.”
-- KARNOWSKI RIDICULES CHARGES AGAINST THE ZIOBRYŚCI AND REBUFFS GOWIN: “It seemed that Mr. Gowin's recent action showed how absurd all the articles about the alleged dissent of the 'ziobryści' were. The threat of a split came from a completely different direction. But our 'experts' continue with their narrative. They know that any nonsense that could cause discord within PiS will be spread further. It's a shame for the readers of these newspapers. They are simply being duped.”

-- TRZASKOWSKI QUICKLY SHOWED WHAT KIND OF POLAND HE STANDS FOR: “The previous candidate for KO, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, was unable to effectively convey her vision for the future. However, Trzaskowski and his advisors quickly showed what kind of Poland they stand for. The Mayor of Warsaw refers to the crisis caused by the pandemic and proposed a vision of 'new solidarity.' He wants to postpone what he calls PiS's gigantomania and shift funds from large infrastructure projects to stimulate the economy and help those most affected by the crisis.”
-- PIS'S MESSAGE ABOUT INVESTMENTS REMINDS OF TUSK'S CAMPAIGN ABOUT BUILDING ROADS - SZUŁDRZYŃSKI CONTINUES: “But this role reversal stems from the position PiS occupies today. The party that in 2015 channeled social revolt and impatience with eight years of PO building highways and airports, promising ambitious social projects, has now found itself in the position of an establishment party. It can no longer appeal to revolt; the only thing it can offer is to stir national ambitions. Hence, the vision of large public investments that are to stimulate the economy and satisfy national pride. This is reminiscent of the Platform's campaign years ago, when Donald Tusk promised to build highways, bridges, and stadiums on posters.”

-- FOR PIS, SZUMOWSKI IS UNTOUCHABLE, IT'S KACZYŃSKI'S DECISION - Iwona Szpala and Agata Kondzińska in GW: “Łukasz Szumowski is untouchable – this decision was made by Jarosław Kaczyński. However, subsequent scandals involving the ministry's purchases and family businesses have emboldened the minister of health's political opponents.”

-- JACEK ŻAKOWSKI APPEALS FOR HELP IN COLLECTING SIGNATURES FOR TRZASKOWSKI - as he writes in GW: “This is not yet the election of a president. This is only an election for less dishonest elections. You can collect signatures for Rafał Trzaskowski, and then vote for whomever you want. But with a clear conscience, knowing that we have contributed to the defense of elementary democratic standards.”
-- SYLWIA SPUREK ON THE CONFLICT OF INTEREST OF THE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND ANIMAL WELFARE - she writes in Krytyka Polityczna: “Why do I avoid mentioning the minister of agriculture's name in the text? Because Minister A.'s case is not just a matter of the personal convictions of the person currently holding the position. Minister A.'s case, like in a lens, shows that administrative oversight over the agricultural sector has required fundamental reform for years, in order to end the conflict of interest. Yes, a conflict of interest, because in its current form, the minister of agriculture, on the one hand, aims to intensify and reduce the costs of animal production and farming, and on the other hand, in accordance with the law, is responsible for animal health protection, food quality, or, for example, land protection. And you cannot have everything. Either intensification of production and cost reduction, or human health, animal rights, and environmental protection. Either a minister, or a trade union activist. Either acting on behalf of all of us, for the common good, or for a chosen group.”
