STATE OF PLAY: Fijołek on Thun: With such opposition, PiS will rule until 2040; Wielowieyska: Some in PiS will want Duda to lose; Szułdrzyński: Will the President retaliate against Kaczyński?
-- WITH SUCH OPPOSITION, PIS WILL RULE UNTIL 2040 - MARCIN FIJOŁEK ON RÓŻA THUN'S NIGHTTIME TWITTER ACTIVITY: "Following a technical decision, completely detached from politics, to direct internet users searching for the term 'coronavirus' on Google to responsible websites presenting verified data, became the Public Policy Director for Central and Eastern Europe at Google. Róża Thun has evidently decided to enroll Google's team into PiS as well, as the director received criticism for a post where she informed about the aforementioned searches. (...) This broadly opens the gates for PiS to govern for another four years. And perhaps even for decades. Weeks, months, and years pass within the opposition ranks, and there's as much reflection as a cat has. And it's hard to assess this as mere marginal remnants from 2015, given that at least the duo of Kidawa-Grodzki is setting the tone for the largest opposition party's politics and is the face of its actions. They can calmly return to internal squabbles at Nowogrodzka Street." -- FIJOŁEK ON GRODZKI'S REACTION TO OLEJNIK'S QUESTIONS: "The Third Person in the State is sinking further, arguing that nothing happened because at the time, there was no danger within a 30 km radius in Italy, so the Marshal took a rest. When even Monika Olejnik pointed out to him that these were bizarre tales (and yet the Marshal is a doctor...), a sea of complaints poured onto the TVN presenter. It is characteristic that PO-KO politicians (well, a significant portion of them) are starting to react with anger not to comments from media outlets categorized as right-wing, but to columnists from 'Wyborcza', 'Polityka', or TVN who, once in a blue moon, express a critical opinion."

-- THUN CONSIDERED THE LARGEST SEARCH ENGINE DIRECTING USERS TO RESPONSIBLY INFORMING WEBSITES ABOUT THE VIRUS AS SUPPORT FOR PIS.
-- PAWEŁ BRAVO IN TYGODNIK POWSZECHNY ON POSTPONING THE ELECTION - AND WHO WILL GUARANTEE THAT THIS FEAR WON'T STAY WITH US LONGER?: "Calculating who will benefit more from the current epidemic in the context of the upcoming presidential election is an internal political game, due to which voters often prefer to give their voice to new-breed populists. Can a sensible campaign be conducted without rallies and festivities? Apparently, elections are won more often on the internet today. The limitation of mobility will make people even more glued to their screens, so there will be an opportunity to test this. The argument that extensive fear and uncertainty are not a good context for civic decisions is more likely to speak for postponing the elections. But who will guarantee us that this fear won't stay with us longer?"
-- WILL WE BE A MORE MATURE SOCIETY THAN WE THOUGHT? - BRAVO CONTINUES: "Potential damage to the economy and important social initiatives can be limited if we prove to be a more mature society than we have seemed so far. More humble towards the common good and more reasonable than the state must assume in its worst-case crisis scenarios. Before it starts – in case of a crisis escalation – to limit our freedoms by decree (as the example of Italy teaches, in a democratic system this often has mixed results at best)."

-- KURSKI TRIUMPHS AT TVP - headline in GW.
-- KACZYŃSKI PUBLICLY HUMILIATED DUDA IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAMPAIGN - MICHAŁ SZUŁDRZYŃSKI IN RZ: "There is no such thing as a conditional signature. The moment he signed the law, the president lost any leverage over PiS regarding the media. He repeated the mistake from a year ago (also regarding the compensation law for TVP), when he wanted to weaken Kurski by transferring greater competencies to Marzena Paczuska and Piotr Pałka. As soon as he signed, Pałka was dismissed. Why did PiS publicly humiliate the president in the middle of the election campaign? Jarosław Kaczyński himself must have decided."
-- HE EXACTED BRUTAL REVENGE ON DUDA. WILL THERE BE RETALIATION? - SZUŁDRZYŃSKI CONTINUES: "From his point of view, the situation was unacceptable. The resignation of Kurski, whom he defended, would mean that Duda undermined the leader's position as the undisputed leader and that Kaczyński could not defend his people, who had also served the party very well. It would also indicate the weakness of the PiS leader himself, who had been outmaneuvered by Duda, whom right-wing politicians need very much, but do not particularly respect. As a result, Kaczyński would emerge from this whole affair significantly weakened. And the PiS leader could not afford that. He therefore exacted brutal revenge on Duda. Will there be retaliation?

-- KURSKI OUTSMARTED DUDA AND MORAWIECKI - AGNIESZKA KUBLIK IN GW: "Who is Jacek Kurski, if he has outsmarted the most important people in the country right before everyone's eyes? Duda and Morawiecki. (...) Undoubtedly in the party-social life of the ruling camp. And for the worse. Kurski has made a fool of President Duda, Prime Minister Morawiecki, and Krzysztof Czabański, chairman of the National Media Council."

-- ŁÓDŹ ON THE NAME PIS LOSES CONTROL - DOMINIKA WIELOWIEYSKA IN GW: "If Andrzej Duda wins the election, the war will be more civilized. But if he loses, it is obvious that Ziobro will go to Jarosław Kaczyński to demand Prime Minister Morawiecki's resignation. Ziobro himself will want to lead the government.
-- KACZYŃSKI FEARS THAT AFTER VICTORY DUDA WILL ASSERT HIS INDEPENDENCE - WIELOWIEYSKA CONTINUES: "Kaczyński fears that if Duda wins, he might want to assert his independence even more and set conditions. Because, after all, a second term is his last term, and he will have nothing to lose."
-- SOME IN PIS WANT DUDA TO LOSE - WIELOWIEYSKA CONTINUES: "The infighting within the ruling camp is becoming increasingly dangerous for Duda's campaign. Some PiS members will actively want the president to lose, to show that 'mine is on top'. And such a loss would open new political opportunities for them."

-- THE IMPACT OF HUMILIATION ON THE CAMPAIGN IS NEGLIGIBLE, BUT KACZYŃSKI DEMONSTRATED THAT THE "DREAM CANDIDATE" SHOULD STAY IN LINE - JACEK GĄDEK ON GAZETA.PL: "Although Andrzej Duda removed "Kura" from the chairman's seat, PiS ultimately humiliates the president. However, the war in the ruling camp over TVP is socially unnoticed, as the emotions of voters are focused on the approaching coronavirus epidemic. (...) The battle between the president and Nowogrodzka Street for influence in TVP is very spectacular, but it is an hermetic topic. It doesn't matter to the mass voter. Fortunately for PiS and Andrzej Duda, the most important issue today is the coronavirus – emotions and public interest are focused around it. The impact of the president's humiliation by PiS on Andrzej Duda's election chances is negligible. Nevertheless, Jarosław Kaczyński has demonstrated that his 'dream candidate' – as he called Duda – should stay in line."

-- DUDA LOST ON ALL FRONTS - ANNA DĄBROWSKA IN POLITYKA: "Kaczyński clearly gave his consent for Kurski to brilliantly outmaneuver the president. Thus, Kurski triumphs as an advisor to the TVP management with his man in the acting CEO position. The suspended Paczuska has just lost any possibility of influencing the coverage of Duda's campaign in the national media. The president won a small battle on Friday, but lost the war."

-- RZ CRITICIZES THE SENATE MARSHAL: "He must understand that he is a mirror of civic attitudes, he carries a bit of the majesty of the Republic within him, and that is a commitment. I hope Tomasz Grodzki will quickly realize his mistake, but this whole story is the least of the problems Poland will face in the near future. The epidemic in Europe is developing slowly but steadily. More and more countries, where it is still possible, are introducing extraordinary preventive measures."

-- WE RAISED THE ALARM LONG AGO, THE GOVERNMENT WASN'T INTERESTED - MAŁGORZATA KIDAWA-BŁOŃSKA IN CONVERSATION WITH ONET: "We raised the alarm long ago. We submitted a bill, but the government was not interested in this topic. Only after my reaction on Twitter did something start to happen. The President convened a Sejm session, the Prime Minister took the floor. Only after our interventions did the government begin to consider that Poles expect concrete actions."
-- I HAVE NO TRUST IN THIS GOVERNMENT - KIDAWA CONTINUES ON ONET: "I have no trust in this government. I have heard many statements from PiS politicians that later turned out to have nothing to do with the truth, not to mention the propaganda of government television. That is my personal feeling, but at the same time, I believe that Poles must feel safe in crisis situations. People have the right to expect that someone is in control of the situation."
-- KIDAWA ON WHETHER SHE WOULD SUPPORT LIBERALIZATION - FRAGMENT:
Barbara Nowacka's circle suggests that you might also be an ally for the legalization of abortion. Is that true?
- I accept the law as it is now. I will certainly not sign any law that would further tighten the current regulations.
- Would you sign a law liberalizing the regulations?
- If such a law is introduced and does not cause conflicts and emotions, then yes."
-- KIDAWA ON ONET'S QUESTION WHETHER SHE IMAGINES LIS AND RACHOŃ IN THE SAME TVP: "I can imagine it, although in my opinion Mr. Rachoń should first learn journalistic integrity. At the same time, I would like to point out: one can truly hold very right-wing views and be an excellent journalist. It's not about views, but about standards. So that journalists do not engage in party politics."
-- KIDAWA ON PIS ACCEPTING BOOING BARTOSZEWSKI: "People have the right to express their emotions, but since for so many years they have heard from the president and the government that this is an acceptable form of expressing criticism, people have decided that such a form is also valid in the other direction. Something has changed in Poland. I remember the booing at Powązki. I remember when General Ścibor-Rylski or Professor Bartoszewski were booed. For five years, Poles have heard from PiS that certain behaviors are already permissible. It cannot be that some are allowed and others are not."
-- KIDAWA SKEPTICAL ABOUT F-35: "These are very good aircraft, but first and foremost, investment should be made in an anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense system."

-- ALEKSANDER HALL ON THE WORDS OF THE LEFT LEADERS ABOUT THE INDEPENDENCE UNDERGROUND - ASSESSMENTS FROM THE ERA OF CONSOLIDATING PEOPLE'S RULE - writes in RZ: "What Biedroń, Czarzasty, and Zandberg said during the National Day of Remembrance for the Cursed Soldiers at the left candidate's convention can only be interpreted as a return to the assessments of the post-war independence underground formulated during the era of 'consolidating people's rule' and, indirectly, a rehabilitation of those who implemented Stalin's plans in Poland."
-- KOSINIAK HAS TIME, BUT DOES POLISH DEMOCRACY STILL HAVE IT? - HALL'S CONCLUSION: "It is known that PiS has been decidedly dominant in the countryside for a long time. Certainly, Andrzej Duda will achieve a good result in rural areas. However, if anyone can seriously compete with him there, it is only Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. The second argument is the possibility for this candidate to win back a part of PiS voters. Kosiniak-Kamysz has much greater potential here than the Civic Coalition candidate. (...) Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has the most advantages in this game. Sometimes I hear the opinion: the PSL leader is an interesting and talented politician. He brings hope, but he is young and still has time. That's true. Kosiniak-Kamysz still has time. But does threatened Polish democracy have it currently?"
