Politics on Friday: Last Day of the Sejm Session, Committee on Kaczyński's Immunity, Mentzen on Tour, PiS MPs' Conferences

Friday marks another day of the 29th Sejm session. The resumption of debates is scheduled for 9:00 AM, at 2:00 PM questions on current matters will begin, and at 4:30 PM – at the request of the Civic Coalition (KO) club – current information regarding "Eastern Shield" and the protection of state borders will be presented.

At 12:00 PM, a meeting of the Sejm Regulations Committee will commence, during which a motion to grant consent for criminal prosecution of MP Jarosław Kaczyński will be considered.

At 6:00 PM, a voting block will begin, during which MPs will attempt – likely unsuccessfully, as only the PiS club has nominated candidates – to elect Constitutional Tribunal judges.

Several press conferences by PiS parliamentarians are scheduled for today – at 3:00 PM, chaired by club leader Mariusz Błaszczak, along with MPs Kacper Płażyński, Janusz Kowalski, and Janusz Cieszyński.

The Confederation candidate continues his tour of the country – just before the weekend convention, Sławomir Mentzen will appear today in Brzeziny, Rzgów, Pabianice, and Łask.

07:50

Kaczyński’s Late-Night Post:

Another Display of Tusk’s and his Entire Crew’s Brazenness.

We have witnessed another display of brazenness by Tusk and his entire crew. They talk about honest people having nothing to fear, yet they defend their MPs’ immunities hand in hand. Do they perhaps lack arguments in their defense?! – Jarosław Kaczyński wrote on social media.

The height of hypocrisy is agreeing to the arrest and bringing of Minister Ziobro before an illegal pseudo-commission, who had previously appeared at its summons but was deliberately not allowed into the room; The words “Finish, just finish, because he’ll be in soon” best illustrate the real intentions behind this political theater. Besides, I never claimed that ALL from Civic Platform are German agents… – the PiS leader emphasized.

08:09

Domański:

European leaders are increasingly talking about the need to increase defense spending

It has certainly become even more visible and understandable in recent days that Europe must take more responsibility for its security, and I am glad that European leaders, in recent days, including after the Munich conference, are speaking more and more often and decisively about the need for us all to increase defense spending and improve our security – stated Andrzej Domański on PR1’s “Sygnały dnia” (Signals of the Day).

08:14

Petru Criticizes Confederation Politician:

It's Not That Common for a Drunk MP to Appear in the Chamber.

– I wasn't precisely in parliament at that moment when he was being removed [Ryszard Wilk from the plenary hall]. But it's not that common for a drunk MP to appear in the chamber. It's my first time having the pleasure – said Ryszard Petru in an interview with Marcin Fijołek on Polsat News' "Graffiti."

The incident concerns the behavior of Confederation MP Ryszard Wilk yesterday, who was escorted out of the plenary hall by his club colleague. Marshal Hołownia, who asked the politician to leave the chamber, stated that Wilk "is unable to participate in the proceedings."

– Perhaps those who are a bit more tipsy, during evening votes, sit at the back. That might be a tactic, and then when someone sees it's a bad situation, they lead him out. MP Wilk probably went too low and was too visible – assessed Petru.

– The rule is that you can't drink and behave badly at work. However, what's important is that the topic has become public, and this is a moment when we should stigmatize such things. He bears responsibility for this, and voters must also remember this – he pointed out.

"An Official by Definition Doesn't Want Deregulation Because It Takes Away Their Power." Petru on "Crushing the Concrete"

– Today at 2:00 PM, I convened a committee meeting to which Minister Paszyk agreed to attend […], where he will present the entire deregulation package that has been prepared in the ministry for 10 months. In part, this package was blocked by the state's bureaucratic system, without naming anyone specifically – Ryszard Petru said in “Graffiti” on Polsat News.

Many offices block deregulation, but it doesn't matter whether this party or another is in power. This is a non-partisan problem. An official by definition doesn't want deregulation because it takes away their power – he stated.

In his opinion: – For the first time, the concrete would be crushed here. Even Minister Paszyk, with whom I had the pleasure of speaking yesterday, mentioned that the blockage has finally been lifted.

08:42

Petru on Overcoming Bureaucratic Resistance to Deregulation:

I Expect Greater Commitment from the Prime Minister.

– The Ministry of Finance was not a big proponent of this type of regulation [regarding deregulation]. They were, as they put it, skeptical. I have no complaints about Minister Domański. The point is that this is a situation every time where officials do not want deregulation. We must overcome this resistance – said Ryszard Petru in “Graffiti” on Polsat News.

– Therefore, I expect greater commitment from the Prime Minister, meaning overcoming this type of resistance. The deregulation commission is a good solution as long as there is a genuine willingness from everyone for this type of work – he stated.

08:43

Domański on US Tariffs:

It is very important that the EU's response to these announcements be united.

For me, it is very important that this EU response to these announcements [of imposing tariffs] be united, and that we do not allow ourselves to be played against each other in any way. Commissioner Sefcovic is currently in the USA, where I understand he is also holding discussions on the topic of potential tariffs. Everyone loses from tariffs – stated Andrzej Domański on "Sygnały dnia" (Signals of the Day) on PR1.

Polish Soldiers in Ukraine? Paprocka: There Is No Discussion on This Topic Today

– Today, there is no discussion on this topic whatsoever. Today, the Polish army has its own very serious tasks concerning the security of our border and our safety – said Małgorzata Paprocka in an interview with Renata Grochal on the program “Bez uników” on Trójka, when asked whether the Polish government is making a mistake by declaring that we will not send soldiers to Ukraine.

08:58

Petru:

Mentzen's voters include many entrepreneurs disappointed with the government. We only have 3 months

– The time will come to let the air out of Mr. Mentzen. This means that to a large extent it is charlatanism, meaning he throws out slogans that are not thought through. Of course, they are easily embraced by some voters. I had the pleasure of talking with him over a year ago and the conclusion is a lack of a complete, effective program – said Ryszard Petru in “Graffiti” Polsat News.

Poland 2050 MP on entrepreneurs disappointed by inaction
– Undoubtedly, we as a coalition are judged today mainly by what we have done. I believe that politics is largely about delivering promises, not just emotions. […] I believe this [among Mentzen's and Confederation's voters there are many voters disappointed with the current government] – he stated.

– I believe that a large part of entrepreneurs are disappointed by the lack of action in this area. I have many meetings with entrepreneurs who expected not only PiS to be removed from power, but that the entire Polish Deal, health contributions, and all these regulations would be repaired, at least to some extent. […] They are looking for an alternative – he continued.

Petru warns: We only have 3 months
– That's why I say we have 3 months, not 3 years, to implement at least some of these proposals – he indicated.

08:59

Paprocka:

American Troops Arrived in Poland During Trump's First Presidency, Continuation is Evident

– These [American] troops arrived [in Poland] precisely and these declarations were made during the first presidency of Mr. President Trump. Today, few people want to remember this, but also key arms contracts, American purchases, including, for example, F-35 aircraft, also date back to that presidency. So, here, a continuation is clearly visible – Małgorzata Paprocka said on Trójka, when asked if the President had received a clear declaration from Donald Trump's envoys that he did not intend to withdraw American troops from Poland.

– And both Secretary Hegseth and General Kellogg were interested in the President's assessment of the situation and proposals on how the issue of the war in Ukraine should be resolved. The President presented his position, and of course, not everything can be discussed for obvious reasons – he continued.

09:08

Should MP Siarka Be Punished for His "Bullet to the Head" Remarks? Paprocka: We Need to Listen to the Context; As Far As I Know, He Was Quoting a Poem

– You will never hear praise for such formulated views coming from the Presidential Palace or the Chancellery of the President, but let us remember that today, of course, one side of the political scene is righteously outraged. I recall Prime Minister Tusk quoting, for a change, Miłosz's poem about a burdened branch from which a rope hangs – said Małgorzata Paprocka on Trójka, when asked about the words of PiS MP Edward Siarka, "bullet to the head," following Zbigniew Ziobro's statement about Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

– There were no such strong emotions from the Civic Platform side then. I believe such statements happen in politics, am I their proponent? Absolutely not – she continued.

– There is a regulatory commission for this, one needs to listen to the entire context [...] as far as I know, he was simply quoting a poem, but that is an internal parliamentary matter regarding how this case will be resolved – she further stated when asked if MP Siarka should be punished.

09:18

Paprocka on the Pegasus Committee’s Actions:

This is Heading Towards One Big Disgrace.

– As far as I remember, Minister Zbigniew Ziobro appeared at the investigative committee’s session […] This will go down in the annals of Polish politics and Polish parliamentarianism as “quicker, quicker, let’s finish, he’s already in the building,” that was such a disgrace for the committee, and now continuing this, unfortunately, political spectacle in the worst style – Małgorzata Paprocka said on Trójka.

– If the committee truly wanted to question the minister, there was an opportunity, they just needed not to flee the room. […] The minister did appear at the committee’s session – she continued.

– Another invitation to a committee session might be issued, but that is truly the decision of the committee chair or the committee presidium. Let’s be honest, this committee is operating, it’s questioning people, and it’s heading towards one big disgrace. […] We are talking about a legally permitted tool [Pegasus] […] I remember Minister Adam Bodnar’s speech in the Sejm […] he mentioned 500 cases, all under court supervision – she continued, when asked what would happen if the court did not agree to Ziobro’s arrest.

09:29

Bryłka:

Ukraine's EU Membership is Not in Poland's National Interest

From Poland's perspective, there is no national interest in Ukraine's membership in the European Union. Ukraine's presence in the EU is not in Poland's interest. There is a divergence of interests regarding agriculture, cohesion policy, the transport sector policy, and energy-intensive industry – stated Anna Bryłka in the program "Sygnały Dnia" on PR1.

Ukraine's current status is more or less that Ukraine is not in the European Union, but it has all the privileges of a member state without having to meet all those requirements, regulations, and without having to implement EU law. It has [limited] access to the common market – she added.

09:30

Bryłka:

Zelensky Thought He'd Receive Unconditional Support; Americans Simply Expect Payment for Aid

The West in general is weak, and I also recall similar sentiments from Zelensky towards Poland, when he clearly stated at the UN forum during the grain crisis between Poland and Ukraine that he called Poland a country playing into Putin's theatre. These statements by Donald Trump are simply an increase in negotiation pressure; it's obvious – said Anna Bryłka on PR1.

President Zelensky always seemed to believe he would receive support unconditionally; unfortunately, Poland is an example of a state that has borne a colossal cost for supporting Ukraine precisely unconditionally, without setting any conditions. Americans and the new administration simply expect a hefty payment for this assistance – she continued.

09:30

Bryłka on Poland’s Approach to Ukraine’s EU Presence:

It’s so naive it’s actually terrifying.

In my opinion, there are no conditions from Poland. Prime Minister Donald Tusk clearly stated that his goal is to break the deadlock regarding Ukraine's accession to the EU. He did not specify any conditions that Ukraine should meet if it wanted to be an EU member. It is quite the opposite; our approach to Ukraine’s presence in the EU is so naive that it is actually terrifying – stated Anna Bryłka on PR1.

09:31

Zelensky Regarding Peace Talks:

He Must Sit Down for Negotiations." Bryłka on "Bringing Down to Earth

President Zelensky, in my opinion, should sit down at the negotiating table with the Americans, and the fact is that Trump wants to end this war quickly. Probably sooner rather than later, and there's one thing to pay attention to. For the United States, our region is not a priority. They want to resolve this matter, they want to hand over responsibility to Europe – said Anna Bryłka on PR1.

Unfortunately, President Zelensky needs to be brought down to earth a bit; he must sit down for negotiations – she added.

09:32

Bryłka:

We Oppose Sending Polish Soldiers to Ukraine

Like the entire Polish political class, we are against sending Polish soldiers to Ukraine, because it would draw Poland into a war it should not be involved in – stated Anna Bryłka on PR1.

09:39

Bryłka on the Migration Pact:

There Was No Blocking Minority, Most States Agree With It.

The Migration Pact was voted on in the spring of last year. There was no blocking minority. The majority of member states agree with these newly adopted rules. Our government voted against it, but the majority of European countries, especially those affected by mass, uncontrolled immigration, will be beneficiaries of this program, so why would they expect a revision of these regulations – said Anna Bryłka in PR1.

10:11

for MPs Siarka and Wilk:

They Disgraced Themselves and the Sejm." Hołownia Calls for "Highest Possible Penalty

– MP Siarka and MP Wilk have disgraced themselves and the Sejm. Today, I will request the highest possible penalty for both MPs – 20,000 zlotys each – Szymon Hołownia announced on X.

– I have also instructed the Chancellery to prepare solutions that will allow MPs to be tested with a breathalyzer – he added.

– There is no tolerance for disorder. We are ending the long tradition of tolerating the presence of drunken MPs. Not on my watch – the Marshal of the Sejm concluded.

12:02

Hołownia:

Our Decision is Not to Elect Judges Until We Fix the Constitutional Tribunal

I assume and surmise that the situation today will be that these seats [in the Constitutional Tribunal] will remain vacant. Our decision is not to elect judges to the Constitutional Tribunal until we fix the Constitutional Tribunal. If these individuals are not elected as judges, I will announce another date for elections – stated Szymon Hołownia at a press conference in the Sejm.

12:07

Hołownia on MP Siarka's words:

I hope the prosecutor's office will quickly wrap this up, and we can vote on immunity.

– These words ["a bullet in the head"] have disgraced the parliamentary hall. These words have disgraced Polish democracy. These words were spoken in a place from which the idea of murdering President Narutowicz once emerged […] these words must never be uttered here again – said Szymon Hołownia at a press conference.

– I will be very surprised if the presidium does not agree to my motion to fine MP Siarka PLN 20,000. That is something we can do. The motion to the prosecutor has already been filed, from what I hear. There is no need to multiply entities. I hope the prosecutor's office will quickly wrap this up, and we will be able to vote on MP Siarka's immunity – he continued.

12:08

Hołownia:

We Need to Lower the Temperature, Including Between PO and PiS

If Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his political circle propose de-escalating the polarization conflict in Poland, I can only applaud that. This is precisely what I have been talking about for many years, first as a publicist, and now as a politician. Yes, that's exactly what it's about. We need to lower the temperature, including between PO and PiS. We need to lower the temperature between PiS and PO, in our families, in our workplaces. So, the Prime Minister's declaration is music to my ears – stated Szymon Hołownia at a press conference in the Sejm.

12:09

Hołownia:

If we have a democracy that calms instead of a fighting democracy, I am absolutely 'for' it

If now, instead of a fighting democracy, we have a democracy that calms, tries to release emotions rather than accumulate them, I am absolutely entirely 'for' it and I say this without any subterfuge, I will deeply support the Prime Minister in this – stated Szymon Hołownia at a press conference in the Sejm.

12:19

Hołownia on expectations before the National Security Council meeting:

I hope the President won’t just talk about conversations with General Kellogg.

– A lot depends on how the President chairs this council. I have said many times that my experiences participating in National Security Council (RBN) meetings have been moderately substantively satisfying, because it was usually about reporting […]. National Security Councils should be consultative councils, not reporting ones – said Szymon Hołownia at a press conference, when asked what he expected to learn at the National Security Council meeting.

– I hope the President won’t just talk about his conversations with General Kellogg, but will actually initiate a discussion about how today […] we could all collectively take care of our security, in a situation where, it seems, obvious things need to be repeated: that Putin is a criminal, that Ukraine is the victim, that Zelensky is not a dictator but a hero – he continued.

12:23

Hołownia on Tusk's Plan:

I'm Very Curious About It.

– The question is, how about the Prime Minister as well, because he announced some plan yesterday when he appeared in the Sejm. I'm very curious about it because it sounded like an announcement of a very coherent plan, A: to lower the temperature of political disputes, very interesting, but B: also to consolidate the political scene and, consequently, society around the topic of security, without frightening, but as I understand it, in the key of strength, pride, and hope – said Szymon Hołownia at a press conference.

13:12

Kaczyński Absent from Rules Committee; Bogucki Presents PiS Chairman's Position

Esteemed committee, I hereby declare the following. Firstly, I do not consent to being held accountable for the alleged crime in the aforementioned matter, and I request that the esteemed committee not grant consent in this case. The applicant completely disregards the specific situation of a witness testifying under obligation before a state authority, based on relevant procedural regulations – stated Zbigniew Bogucki at the meeting of the Rules Committee, quoting Jarosław Kaczyński's position.

The applicant in the case seeking consent to prosecute Kaczyński is MEP Krzysztof Brejza of Civic Coalition (KO), concerning whom the PiS chairman allegedly said during his testimony before the Pegasus investigative committee that he "commits very serious and, moreover, repulsive crimes.".

Jarosław Kaczyński's absence from the committee meeting was anticipated, as the PiS chairman is reported to be in hospital.

13:52

Duda Advises Zelensky: Stay Calm and Cooperate with Trump

"President Zelensky called me a few minutes ago. We had a candid conversation shortly after the recent meetings with General Kellogg and other developments. I conveyed to him that we consistently believe there is no other way to stop the bloodshed and achieve lasting peace in Ukraine than with the support of the United States" – President Andrzej Duda wrote on X.

"For this reason, I suggested to President Zelensky that he remain committed to a course of calm and constructive cooperation with Donald Trump. I trust that goodwill and honesty form the basis of the US negotiation strategy. I have no doubt that President Trump is guided by a deep sense of responsibility for global stability and peace" – he continued in his post.

15:28

Tomczyk:

Błaszczak Disclosed Top-Secret Information in the Name of Party Interest

The fact that a minister of defense is disclosing top-secret documents is indeed a certain novelty in any democratic country, and something we have not encountered before. If one were to imagine a basic task for a spy who might appear in Poland, their first and most important mission would be to steal the defense plans of the country in which that spy works – stated Cezary Tomczyk in the Sejm.

But no one predicted, not even in books, that such a role could be played by a minister of defense, who swore to defend the country and to protect and guard its secrets. Minister Błaszczak has apparently forgotten this, because in the name of party interest, at a military picnic, he disclosed top-secret information, which, acting in agreement a few days earlier, he moved to an archive to declassify and secure an alibi for himself – he continued.

15:31

Tomczyk:

Błaszczak De Facto Betrayed His Own Soldiers

Błaszczak, by revealing variant fragments of this Warta defense plan, de facto betrayed his own soldiers, betrayed the people he led as their chief, as the Minister of National Defence – stated Cezary Tomczyk in the Sejm.

15:48

Błaszczak:

The Government Aims to Bring About the Collapse of Poczta Polska

– After a year of the December 13 coalition's rule, Poczta Polska is on the brink of collapse, but I can put forward this thesis: the government's intention is precisely to bring about the collapse of Poczta Polska – said Mariusz Błaszczak at a press conference.

– Among the referendum questions was also a question regarding the lack of consent or consent for the protection of state property. And this referendum was solemnly negated, solemnly invalidated by Donald Tusk […] Donald Tusk was interested in being able to liquidate state property in the form of Poczta Polska. And the second event is the so-called recovery program, which is in fact a program for closing down Poczta Polska, assuming the dismissal of 10,000 employees – he continued.

– If we add to this the fact of yesterday's event, namely the adoption by the December 13 coalition of a law that breaks the current monopoly of Poczta Polska regarding the sending of official correspondence, we have a complete picture of the situation in which Poczta Polska finds itself. Law and Justice stands firmly behind Poczta Polska […] we will undertake all possible actions, as provided for by the Sejm regulations, to support Poczta Polska employees, to save Poczta Polska from destruction – he went on to say.

– I interpret what is happening today with Poczta Polska as an attempt to close down, to liquidate Poczta Polska. […] We demand that Donald Tusk personally engage in negotiations with the protesting employees, we have presented a draft law, we have an idea for Poczta Polska, so all of this is on the table, one just needs to make use of it – he added.

15:56

Sikorski on Iran-Russia military cooperation:

We are dealing with an axis of chaos.

Hundreds of these terrible machines are being fired into Ukraine. The machine was produced in Iran, the same type of machine is also attacking Israel. The same type of machine struck the Chernobyl nuclear power plant last week, thank God it did not breach the sarcophagus and release radiation, because then the whole of Europe would have a problem, just like in 1986. So, it is a matter of concern for Europe and the world that Iran and Russia are cooperating in the production and firing of hundreds of such drones at targets that are not necessarily military – stated Radosław Sikorski in an interview with journalists.

There was fruitful cooperation here between Ukraine, Poland, and the United States, a model alliance, so that this drone could bear witness here to what we are dealing with, namely an axis of chaos – he added.

16:12

Błaszczak questioned about Tusk and his appeal:

He behaved hypocritically, his declaration is a complete joke.

– I think Donald Tusk behaved hypocritically, because Donald Tusk did indeed make such an appeal, but his coalition agreed to the arrest of Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, unfounded, as he was brought by the police to the so-called committee session, yesterday the immunity of Minister Zbigniew Ziobro was revoked – said Mariusz Błaszczak at a press conference, when asked about Prime Minister Donald Tusk's appeal to build a common sense of responsibility for Poland's raison d'état.

– We have a situation where those forming the December 13th coalition revoke the immunity of opposition MPs, while retaining the immunity of government coalition MPs. […] I believe that this declaration made by Donald Tusk is a complete joke, something that borders on irony – he continued.

Future US Ambassador on Duda's Tweet: A Deeply Thoughtful Statement Expressed by a True Friend of America and a Great Defender of Poland, Its People, and Peace in Europe

President Andrzej Duda will meet with American leader Donald Trump at the White House on Saturday, February 22 – Polsat News reports.

A deeply thoughtful statement and warm sentiment expressed by a true friend of America and a great defender of Poland, her people and peace in Europe – wrote Tom Rose, future US Ambassador to Poland, on social media.

Parliament Observes Moment of Silence for Victims of Russian Aggression in Ukraine

This coming Monday (February 24) marks the 3rd anniversary of the full-scale, unlawful aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

18:46

"To Be Continued." Bodnar on the "Settlement Process"

The settlement process is ongoing. Important decisions by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland were made in the last few hours. Member of Parliament Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski has been stripped of his immunity in connection with proceedings regarding irregularities at KOWR – the National Support Centre for Agriculture – Adam Bodnar wrote on social media.

Another decision has been made regarding the lifting of immunity and consent for the detention and temporary arrest of Member of Parliament Marcin Romanowski. This is related to the misappropriation of public funds from the Justice Fund – emphasized the Minister of Justice.

Prosecutors can now proceed with further actions. To be continued – he added.

18:47

Financial Penalties and a Prosecutor's Office Complaint: Sejm Presidium Decides on MPs Siarka and Wilk

"The Sejm Presidium session has concluded. MP Siarka – maximum penalty of 20,000 zloty and a complaint to the prosecutor's office. MP Wilk – given his declaration to combat alcoholism, the minimum penalty of 4,000 zloty" – Szymon Hołownia informed on X.

The case of Edward Siarka concerns his words about "a bullet in the head", which were uttered during a Sejm session following Zbigniew Ziobro's statement about Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Ryszard Wilk, on the other hand, was penalized for his behavior in the chamber, where he was allegedly intoxicated.

19:23

Sikorski on the Indivisible Polish-American Alliance:

Together We Oppose the Axis of Evil.

The Polish-American alliance is indivisible. The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington is one of the most influential political events in the world. This year, participants can see a symbol of the death of thousands of innocents, shot down by Ukrainians and delivered by Poland: an Iranian Shahed drone. Together, we effectively oppose the axis of evil — Radosław Sikorski wrote on platform X.

23:24

Sikorski After Meeting with US Secretary of State:

Our Alliance Remains Strong.

Thank you to Marco Rubio for a good conversation about our close transatlantic cooperation. Our Alliance remains strong – wrote the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, on social media.
