President Duda on Yad Vashem Ceremony: The President's Address is Natural and, from the Perspective of Historical Truth, Also Necessary
We have a special situation because we are expecting many foreign guests [at the 75th anniversary commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz]. We expect delegations from practically the entire world, we expect a whole range of presidents, ministers, prime ministers, crowned heads from around the globe, but as I said, above all, we expect survivors, and they will certainly be, on the one hand, co-hosts, and on the other hand, the most important guests of this extraordinary event that will take place on January 27th - stated President Andrzej Duda during the Cabinet Council meeting. He added:
"This year it happened that a few days before this event, the World Holocaust Forum, a private organization, a foundation established by one of the world's, one might say, entrepreneurs of Jewish origin, which for several years has been organizing meetings related to commemorating the victims of the Holocaust, invites world leaders to Jerusalem, together with the Yad Vashem Museum, to pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. I, as president, also received an invitation to these ceremonies. This happened some time ago. However, from the invitation, it could be inferred that my address was not foreseen, meaning that the Polish position and Polish remembrance of Holocaust victims, but the Polish remembrance and tribute by the president to all victims of the German, Nazi crime that occurred during World War II, could not be presented there. We have long addressed the Israeli side in various ways so that this voice, as the most important representative of the most important country, could be given there, because to be perfectly clear, the president of Germany, Israel, but also France, Great Britain will speak there, and in the corridors, the organizer mentions President Putin as the most important guest, who will also have a voice there. Therefore, it is important for me, even fundamental, that the President of the Republic of Poland, the country whose citizens suffered the most deaths in the Holocaust, three million Polish Jews, citizens of the Republic of Poland, lost their lives in the Holocaust, also speaks there. This is the largest number of Holocaust victims, as it is half of the total number of Holocaust victims recorded worldwide. Therefore, I had no doubt that, considering this fact, the President of the Republic of Poland taking the floor there, since the president of Germany and the presidents of so many other countries will speak, is something completely natural, justified. If only from the perspective of historical reasons, historical truth, not only telling this historical truth, but also acknowledging this historical truth, which is the number of victims and the significance of Poland as the state that was first attacked, from which World War II began, with the attack by German, Hitlerite Germany and Stalinist Russia, the Soviet Union, based on the Hitler-Stalin pact of August 23, 1939.”- I believed and still believe that the president speaking here was something natural, is something natural, and from the perspective of historical truth, it is also something necessary - PAD continued.
