Szydło:
It's good that this strike has been suspended. A shame it's only now.
- It's good that this [teachers'] strike has been suspended. A shame it's only now. It seems to me that this could have been done during the junior high and eighth-grade exams, and then we could have started talking - stated Beata Szydło in an interview with Beata Lubecka on Radio Zet. As she emphasized, dialogue with teachers' unions was ongoing, but in order to find a solution, both sides must want it.
08:32
- We cannot afford to leave high school graduates in uncertainty [which is why the amendment was pushed through]. I appreciate Chairman Broniarz, thank you for this decision, that he decided to suspend the strike. Nevertheless, the maturita exams are a serious test. The future of young people depends on this - stated Beata Szydło in an interview with Beata Lubecka on Radio Zet. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, everything was prepared as it should have been.
08:41
Szydło:
Now is the time to try and find compromise and a solution. This requires willingness from all sides

Szydło:
The Agreement Signed with "Solidarność" is Binding and Will Come into Effect
- The agreement that was signed with "Solidarność" is binding and it will come into effect. These five postulates that were included there will be realized this year. At the same time, we presented a proposal for a change in the remuneration system, including discussions on changes to the workload - stated Beata Szydło in an interview with Beata Lubecka on Radio Zet.
08:48
- This is not a [round table on education] PR stunt. In the same way, we can say every conversation is a PR stunt. How can we look for solutions and consensus? We need to sit down at the table, since there are so many partners, and talk - stated Beata Szydło in an interview with Beata Lubecka on Radio Zet.

Szydło:

Roundtable Talks Will Be the Beginning of a Cycle That Should Last Many, Many Months
„We will certainly offer an honest dialogue. The roundtable talks, which are about to begin, will be the start of a cycle that, in my opinion, should last many, many months. I developed my bill reforming universities in a three-year dialogue with the academic community” - said Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Gowin in an interview with Piotr Witwicki on Polsat News.
09:07
Gowin:
I Feel a Reshuffle Before the Elections Isn't Necessary. Had It Not Been for the Teachers' Protest, the Prime Minister Might Have Already Made Decisions, But He Has a Completely Free Hand in This Matter
“For some time now, I've had the feeling that a reshuffle before the elections is not essential. Had it not been for the teachers' protest, perhaps Prime Minister Morawiecki would have made decisions about a reshuffle just before or just after the holidays, but we have agreed that the Prime Minister has a completely free hand in this matter. It may be that a reshuffle will still happen before the elections, or perhaps the Prime Minister will conclude that it is worth letting the ministers running in the European elections work until the end” - said Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Gowin in an interview with Piotr Witwicki on Polsat News.
09:42
- For now, we are talking about what the Prime Minister has proposed, I would call it an introductory evening. An afternoon tea. An introductory midday meal. When I learned that apparently each participating side is to have 5 minutes to speak, I treat it as, let's say, a presentation, time to introduce oneself and actually listen later to the Prime Minister, what proposals he has, what the structure of this roundtable is - stated Paweł Kukiz in an interview with Jacek Prusinowski on Radio Plus.
09:58
Kukiz:
Postponing the Strike to September is Nothing More Than Resigning from This Form of Protest
- For me, announcing a strike or postponing it to September, as these proposals seem to be, is nothing more than simply resigning from this form of protest. By September, sir, that's so many months that people will forget that something like this was even supposed to happen. Mobilizing such a group again, a group that has generally been deceived by the system, let's call it that in broad strokes, will be very difficult. People have also lost faith, their dignity has been trampled on even more - stated Paweł Kukiz in an interview with Jacek Prusinowski on Radio Plus.

„I am pleased that in the year of the 101st anniversary of Poland regaining independence, we are making a purchase that will significantly strengthen our armed forces. These are helicopters that will be a very important element of our security architecture. Helicopters proven in the navies of many countries, including Great Britain, our NATO allies. I want to express my great joy that part of the production will take place here, with a very well-negotiated offset agreement worth PLN 400 million, which will benefit not only Świdnik, but also Łódź and the Gdańsk University of Technology” - said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during the signing of the agreement for the delivery of helicopters for the Navy in Świdnik.

Broniarz:
Teachers' Disappointment is Undeniable, but the Vast Majority Will Return to Strike in September
„It is undeniable that teachers are disappointed, but the vast majority say they will return in September because September will see a double cohort, emotions will reignite, and teachers will return who will say that today we have been put in the corner, smeared from top to bottom. This creates a terrible relationship between teachers and students. This is not a good moment to extinguish our emotions, our protests” – said the head of ZNP, Sławomir Broniarz, in a conversation with Jacek Żakowski on Poranek Radia TOK FM.

Broniarz:
We want to hold our own roundtable in June. We want it to be a real new quality of discussion on education
„[The roundtable] we want to hold in June, before the culminating moment, in the last week of June, so that the effects can still be absorbed by teachers. We have declarations from major names in Polish pedagogy who want to get involved, and we want it to be a real new quality of discussion on education” – said the head of ZNP, Sławomir Broniarz, in an interview with Jacek Żakowski on Radio TOK FM's Poranek.

“The Prime Minister will open the first plenary meeting, which will be attended by over 60 people. A very wide range of communities and entities involved in education on a daily basis have been invited. Parliamentary clubs, central trade unions, teachers, parents, and representatives of local government have been invited. Such a rich cross-section of communities involved in education is necessary to develop good solutions that will form the foundation for the next stage of education reform” - said Minister Michał Dworczyk at a press conference in the Sejm.
“Following the Prime Minister’s address, there will be a presentation by Prime Minister Szydło, and then by Mr. Paweł Mucha, representing the President. All participants will be able to express their views” - he added.

PiS Raised the White Flag. Abdicated Efforts for a Better EU Budget for Poland, for Cohesion Policy, for Common Agricultural Policy
- The PSL made a huge contribution to European accession, negotiations, and securing the largest budget for Poland, Polish agriculture, and cohesion policy. We now want to conduct a series of conferences and meetings related to this, summarizing 15 years in the EU, but also outlining future perspectives. Today, we are starting with agriculture - stated Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz at a briefing in the Sejm.
- PiS raised the white flag. It has abdicated its efforts to secure a better [EU] budget for Poland, for cohesion policy, for common agricultural policy. We will strive for subsidies in Poland to average 280 euros per hectare, just as they are in Germany and France - he added. As the PSL chairman emphasized, the peasant party wants to draw attention to the situation of children and grandchildren of former State Agricultural Farm (PGR) employees.

Bank Pekao has granted Echo Investment an 87 million euro loan for the construction of "Biura przy Willi" and "Biura przy Warzelni" – two office buildings being developed within the Browary Warszawskie complex.
Browary Warszawskie is a coherently designed urban space, combining offices, apartments, rental apartments, services, and gastronomic spaces. The project is being developed in the block bounded by Grzybowska, Wronia, Krochmalna, and Chłodna streets in Warsaw's Wola district. Construction work began in 2016, and just two years later, the first office building and residential building were commissioned. "Biura przy Willi" and "Biura przy Warzelni" offer a total of 46,000 sqm of leasable space; their construction began last year and is scheduled for completion in 2020.
– The revitalization of the Browary Warszawskie site aligns with Bank Pekao's philosophy. By bringing back to life the vaulted cellars, the malthouse building, the laboratory, and the villa, the investment references the brewing tradition of this place, combining it with the modernity of the designed office and residential buildings. The rich gastronomic and cultural offer will make Warsaw residents eager to spend their free time here. We are happy to be part of Browary Warszawskie's success and to contribute our part to building such an attractive place – says Tomasz Styczyński, Vice-President of the Management Board of Bank Pekao.

We Call on Ardanowski to Secure National Budget Funds and Seek EU Support for Drought Damage Compensation
- The drought is reaching dimensions unprecedented not in 2, 3, but in several decades. I speak with farmers who have been working the land for 60 years. They have not seen such a drought in April, such difficult weather conditions. This already compels us to think about how to help those suffering from the drought. We call on Minister Ardanowski to secure national budget funds and to seek support from the European budget for compensation and aid for those who will suffer as a result of this drought - stated Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz at a briefing in the Sejm.

„I don't know anything about this initiative [the round table organized by trade unions]. Today, we are starting serious talks. All environments involved in Polish education will be present. We urge [trade unions and the opposition] not to make any unsubstantiated accusations. If someone believes the government has bad intentions, let them come, start a conversation, and then we can address the facts” - said Minister Michał Dworczyk at a press conference in the Sejm.

President Andrzej Duda has signed amendments to the Act on the Education System and the Act on Educational Law, commonly referred to as the Matura Exams and Maturzysta Classification Act – 300POLITYKA has learned. The act will now be published in the Journal of Laws. According to the schedule published by the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, this is expected to happen today (the amendment is already on the Public Information Bulletin list), so that the act can enter into force tomorrow.

Suspending the Strike Doesn't Suspend Our Efforts for a Better School and Better Prospects for Students and Teachers
- I thank the teachers and the teachers' trade unions for suspending and ending the strike. This is a good decision that prioritizes the well-being of students, especially those preparing for their matura exams. Suspending the strike does not suspend our efforts for a better school and better prospects for students and teachers. Our shared concern is to ensure that education in Poland meets the highest global standards. This should be the goal of all of us: students, parents, teachers, and the entire state - stated Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during the deliberations of the so-called educational roundtable.

Szydło:
The Moment Has Come to Cool Emotions, Quiet Disputes, and Sit Down Together to Consider Our Future Direction
“Although we have not yet reached a complete solution to the problem, we have nevertheless taken a step forward, because yesterday’s decision to suspend the strike, for which I once again sincerely want to express my gratitude, is a good decision. I know it was not easy for the strike organizers. I also know that problems and topics to which we must return during discussions still lie ahead of us. But now the moment has come when we need to cool down emotions, quiet disputes, and sit down together at the table to consider the direction we will take” - said Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs Beata Szydło during the deliberations of the educational roundtable.
“Each side at this table is needed, because it is impossible to discuss the future of education, the future of Polish schools, without teachers, without parents, without considering what is essential, namely teaching and students” - she added.

- "MPs' work was scheduled until 2:30 AM," was noted [on the Newsweek portal]. In reality, such situations have substantive justification. In this case, it was necessary to pass two socially significant bills – the extension of the "Family 500+" program to the first child and amendments to the Education Law, enabling this year's high school graduates to take their final exams without issues (which, as is known, begin in just 10 days – May 6, 2019)," the Sejm Information Centre stated in a communiqué sent to the media.
"Working into the night happens relatively rarely. In the current Sejm term, out of 219 days of sittings, it occurred in 41 instances, meaning less than one in five. This happened many times in previous Sejm terms – all data on this subject is public, as the stenographic report of each day's proceedings contains the time of their commencement and conclusion.
It is also worth noting that Thursday's proceedings (April 25th), lasting until 2:50 AM, were the longest in this term. This means that, on the one hand, it is not a representative example for comparison, and on the other hand, one cannot forget that similar situations occurred in previous terms – for example, on January 14, 2015, the Chamber's proceedings also lasted until 2:50 AM.
Cases of rapid legislative processes are also not a new phenomenon – the functioning of the state sometimes requires making changes to the law in a relatively short period of time."

PiS withdrew at the last moment from changes to the law on the Supreme Court, reportedly because even the Marshal of the Sejm himself had constitutional doubts about the so-called mechanism to prevent the blockade of candidates for the Supreme Court President. The ruling party – as stated by MP Ast – is not abandoning the concept itself, and the KRS has already proposed a new version of the regulations that will achieve the same effect while being consistent with the Constitution. In other words: even if PiS loses the parliamentary elections, and especially the presidential election, Andrzej Duda will still be able to appoint a new First President of the Supreme Court.
- *The proposed solution regarding the procedure for appointing the First President of the Supreme Court may be inconsistent with Article 183(3) of the Constitution. It seems reasonable to adopt a regulation where – if five candidates for this position have not been elected – the General Assembly of Supreme Court Judges would present to the President all candidates for the First President of the Supreme Court nominated at the session where their election was to take place* – wrote the KRS in its opinion, sent to the Sejm, on the initial version of the amendment project, which, after a self-amendment, was “carved out” and shortened, thus not amending the law on the Supreme Court, but only the law on the KRS and the Law on the Organization of Ordinary Courts.
PiS wanted it so that in the event of a lack of quorum at the general assembly session, judges could pass a resolution regardless of the number of judges present. If, however, such a resolution were not presented at all, the President would appoint the First President from among all Supreme Court judges. This solution, however, has a fundamental flaw: it is directly inconsistent with the aforementioned article of the Constitution, which states that the President appoints the First President of the Supreme Court from among the candidates presented by the General Assembly. Modifying this mechanism would ensure that candidates are formally presented by the assembly.
Małgorzata Gersdorf's term ends on April 30, 2020. The presidential elections will be held in the spring, but the new president will likely be appointed at the beginning of August. Theoretically, some judges – without specifying which ones – could try to boycott the General Assembly to prevent the election of candidates by August. Of course, this would only make sense if President Duda did not secure re-election. After the amendment, such a blockade will be practically impossible.
The KRS also states in the opinion described, among other things, that doubts are raised by the proposed determination of the number of candidates for the Supreme Court President in the projected article of the amending law (from 3 to 5 candidates), unlike in the case of the election of candidates for the First President of the Supreme Court (5 candidates). “This differentiation appears to be unjustified,” it adds.

On the occasion of the May 3rd Constitution Day, Donald Tusk, the former Prime Minister of Poland and current President of the European Council, announced his participation in an event at the University of Warsaw. He shared this information on Twitter, indicating that the main lecture hall, Auditorium Maximum, is already fully booked. However, to accommodate those who could not secure a seat inside, a large screen will be set up in the courtyard. Tusk also reassured potential attendees that he would be available for discussions and questions even after the formal lecture concludes. This suggests a desire for direct engagement with the public and a commitment to fostering open dialogue regarding important national celebrations and their historical context.

A New Subcommittee on "Parents" May Emerge from Discussions
- First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone who participated in this first session of our roundtable. The formula and atmosphere of the discussion were truly roundtable-like. The entire debate garnered immense interest. Everyone arrived with a host of ideas, viewed from their own perspective, because parents and teachers, experts, and pedagogues typically had different ideas. There were specialists from the academic world, as well as local government officials and representatives of some opposition parties - stated Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at a briefing following the first part of the so-called educational roundtable.
- The second part of today's roundtable will commence shortly. Work is already underway in the subcommittees, and here's the first noteworthy point, because following the discussions, a concept is emerging to establish yet another subcommittee. I wouldn't want to prejudge this 100%, as we are striving to construct this in a democratic formula, but if such decisions are made with the participation of representatives from other groups involved in our roundtable, we would establish an additional subcommittee with the working title, on the working theme of "parents" - added PMM.

We invite PO club representatives to attend future roundtable sessions
- We are waiting for those few individuals who were missing from our roundtable. There were probably 60 or 70 people present, but contrary to earlier announcements and written promises, there were no representatives from the PO club. We very warmly invite them to appear at the upcoming sessions, which we will conduct regularly - stated Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at a briefing after the first part of the so-called educational roundtable.

I Will Ask President Duda to Patronize the Round Table Discussions
- I heard during the break that one of the trade unions, which was not present at this table, would be ready to join if it took place with the inclusion of employers in the RDS (Economic and Social Council) formula, with the inclusion of employers. I think this is worth considering and under the patronage of President Andrzej Duda. I will very warmly ask the president for this, to also patronize these discussions, of course - stated Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at a briefing after the first part of the so-called education round table.

We Need Unity, So We Ask Again for All Who Care About Polish Education to Sit Down at the Table. A Place Will Always Be Waiting for You
„Now is a time when we must be together. We must unite around the discussion on Polish schools, because we are talking about fundamental matters for Poland, we are talking about the future of Polish education, and this means we are talking about the future of Poland. We need unity, and therefore we are once again asking all those who care about the good of Polish education, who speak with concern about the need for another step of reform in Polish schools, that we need to focus on issues related to teachers' salaries, but also to restore dignity to this profession, showing that this is a profession which, besides serving students, is a profession that should fulfill the ambitions and professional dreams of those who practice it, and showing that all of this centers around the most important person, which is the student. We ask everyone to sit down at the table. There is a place, we are waiting. This place will always be waiting for you” - said Deputy Prime Minister Beata Szydło after the deliberations of the education roundtable.

"The first decision concerns a gathering along the route: Castle Square, Krakowskie Przedmieście, Świętokrzyska Street, ending on Jasna Street. The organizer indicated 10,000 participants in the application. The reason for the ban is the prior occupation of the area by the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland by a letter dated January 14, 2019, requesting permission to occupy Castle Square for the purpose of preparing and holding the central celebrations of the National Day of May 3rd with the participation of the President of the Republic of Poland. Tribunes and platforms are to be erected on Castle Square from April 30, 2019. Heavy equipment and construction machinery are to be used for their construction. The organizer of the state ceremonies has received the appropriate permit from the Public Land Management Office for the use of the area. In the assessment of the City Hall, due to the work on Castle Square using heavy equipment and the fact that its surface is currently partially used by gastronomic gardens, accommodating the reported number of 10,000 participants is not possible. Additionally, on May 1st, a meeting of prime ministers will take place at the Royal Castle, organized at the invitation of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. The meeting, titled 'Together for Europe. High Level Summit,' will be attended by the heads of state and government of European Union countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary. This event may also affect the possibility of the State Protection Service limiting access to the Royal Castle from the Castle Square side. The change of the gathering location proposed by the Office of Security and Crisis Management was not accepted by the organizer. The second decision concerns a notification of a stationary gathering on Castle Square, also on May 1st. Given that the location of this gathering is the same as the gathering described above – i.e., Castle Square – the issued ban was justified by the City of Warsaw Municipality analogously to the first decision."

I Encourage the ZNP President to Participate in the Next Roundtable Meeting. The Door Remains Open
- The door from our side is still open. We are ready to change the formula of the roundtable, to expand it, so that those who are absent today can sit down and talk. Because today's events have shown that it is necessary and worthwhile - stated Joanna Kopcińska in a conversation with Bogdan Rymanowski on the Polsat News program "Wydarzenia i opinie".
- To enable the ZNP president's presence at the next meeting, to which I am urging, inviting, and encouraging him, the proposal is to expand the formula, as the trade unionists requested, to be in a broader area, like in the RDS, broadened to include employers. Prime Minister Morawiecki is of course open to such proposals, therefore we hope that at the next table, the trade unionists who are absent today will be present - added the government spokesperson.
