Today's State of Play
-- NOVEMBER BRINGS IMPROVEMENT IN GOVERNMENT APPROVAL RATINGS ACROSS ALL DIMENSIONS SURVEYED - CBOS STATEMENT: “In most cases, changes in approval do not exceed the margin of statistical error, however, their consistency allows for the conclusion of increased public support for the incumbent cabinet.”
-- UNPRECEDENTED OPTIMISM IN MONTHS NOTED IN GENERAL ASSESSMENTS OF THE GOVERNMENT'S ECONOMIC POLICY - CBOS CONTINUES: “In general assessments of the government's economic policy, we note optimism unseen for months. Its actions in the economic sphere are positively assessed by nearly two-fifths of Poles, and the percentage of critical opinions on this matter has dropped below 50% for the first time.”
-- THE GOVERNMENT WAS SUPPORTED BY 34 PERCENT OF RESPONDENTS (AN INCREASE OF THREE PERCENTAGE POINTS), AND 41 PERCENT DID NOT SUPPORT IT (A DECREASE OF FOUR PERCENTAGE POINTS).
-- IMPROVEMENT IN GOVERNMENT RATINGS IS ACCOMPANIED BY AN INCREASE IN ACCEPTANCE OF DONALD TUSK AS ITS HEAD: “In November, we note an increase in the percentage of those satisfied with his premiership, coupled with a decrease in the percentage of dissatisfied individuals,” reads the survey analysis.
-- THE SURVEY ALSO INDICATES AN IMPROVEMENT IN THE ASSESSMENT OF THE GOVERNMENT'S ECONOMIC POLICY – 39 percent of Poles positively assessed the government's economic actions (an increase of three percentage points compared to October), and the percentage of critical opinions fell below 50% (to 49 percent, a decrease of three percentage points since October).

-- SUSPECTED OF SABOTAGE RELEASED. ONLY ONE PERSON CHARGED, COURT REFUSED ARREST - MICHAŁ ŻYŁOWSKI IN GW: “Mykhalo Ch. left the courtroom around 3 PM. He was greeted by relieved loved ones. The prosecutor who requested arrest refused to comment. Ch.'s defense attorneys did not wish to speak with the media. They only said their client was very tired after the arrest and needed to rest first.”

-- “WILL CZARZASTY BE LIKE WITEK?” – I ASK. “NOT THAT MUCH!” – ASSURES A LEFTIST MP IN AGATA SZCZĘŚNIAK'S ARTICLE IN OKO.PRESS: “Hołownia did what PiS wanted, they brought a bill, and it was immediately in the Sejm. That won't happen now,” says a leftist politician. “Will Czarzasty be like Elżbieta Witek?” I ask. “Not that much!” the MP assures.”
-- THE OPPOSITION CAN EXPECT PROJECTS TO BE FROZEN RATHER THAN DEBATED - AGATA SZCZĘŚNIAK IN OKO.PRESS CONTINUES: “Czarzasty also announced: 'I will use the Speaker's veto against harmful legislative projects serving populism and disrupting the functioning of the state.' This is also a clear signal that the opposition can expect projects to be frozen rather than debated.”
-- A NEW LEFT POLITICIAN PAINTS THE NEXT TWO YEARS IN ALMOST ROSE-COLORED HUES “THE GOVERNMENT WILL DELIVER. PEOPLE'S LIVES WILL GET BETTER AND BETTER” - SZCZĘŚNIAK IN OKO CONTINUES: “A politician from New Left paints the next two years in almost rose-colored hues: 'The government will deliver. People's lives will get better and better.' At the same time, he claims that 'polarization will intensify,' which will benefit the left, which unequivocally stands on the anti-PiS side. The government side assumes that investments financed from the KPO will start to pay off, and people will begin to feel in their daily lives that Poland has joined the 20 wealthiest societies in the world. Simultaneously, one very probable political scenario is an intensifying conflict with the president. And it is precisely in this conflict that the Marshal of the Sejm is to play a key role.”

-- THE MARSHAL THROWS DOWN THE GAUNTLET TO THE PRESIDENT, SAYING: WE ARE MORE NUMEROUS AND THE GOVERNMENT WILL RULE, NOT THE PRESIDENT - MICHAŁ TOMASIK ON TYGODNIK POLITYKA'S PORTAL: “This is a message to Karol Nawrocki, who invokes the mandate of over 10 million Poles in his anti-government actions. The Marshal throws down the gauntlet to the president, saying: we are more numerous and the government will rule, not the president.”

-- PIS POLITICIANS HAVE DESCENDED INTO GROTESQUE. THEY COULD HAVE USED HEAVIER WEAPONS AGAINST CZARZASTY, BUT INSTEAD EMPLOYED A HISTORICAL-POLITICAL CABARET NAMED AFTER ANDRZEJ KRYŻE AND STANISŁAW PIOTROWICZ - PRZEMYSŁAW SZUBARTOWICZ IN INTERIA: “They could have hit the leader of New Left with the Rywin affair, especially since Tomasz Nałęcz recently prepared a circumstantial indictment against him in his book ('The Rywin Affair. Revealing the Truth'), so theoretically, conditions existed for the old case to be revived. But they chose theater, i.e., ostentatious walkouts from the session and shouts of 'Down with Communism!'.”

-- IN UNOFFICIAL CONVERSATIONS, IMPORTANT REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT ADMIT THAT IF ZELENSKYY HAD COME TO VISIT NAWORCKI, NO HARM WOULD HAVE COME TO HIM - PIOTR ZAREMBA IN RZ: “I was also not particularly impressed by the Presidential Palace's handling of relations with Ukraine. Perhaps less so by the very fact of refusing a visit to Kyiv. The Ukrainian authorities have earned it thoroughly. Volodymyr Zelenskyy managed to alienate someone as dedicated to active eastern policy as Andrzej Duda. It's amusing that while liberal media condemned Nawrocki for this, in unofficial conversations, important representatives of the current government admit that if Zelenskyy had come to visit Naworcki, no harm would have come to him.”
-- NAWROCKI CLEARLY HAS THE TEMPTATION TO PLAY THIS CARD AGAIN - ZAREMBA IN RZ CONTINUES: “However, I consider the comments from the presidential center, according to which Zelenskyy should have come to Warsaw to thank Poles, to be petty and embarrassing. Moreover, the more silence surrounding the troubles in mutual relations, the better. Meanwhile, Nawrocki clearly has the temptation to play this card again. So, we should not be surprised that Poles will react increasingly negatively to the prospect of further supporting Ukrainian resistance. Even if the president formally maintains such a necessity.”
-- BOTH THE CONFEDERATION OF THE CROWN OF POLAND AND THE EDITORIAL BOARD OF "DO RZECZY" ARE TODAY SIMPLY REGULAR ALLIES OF PUTIN'S POLITICAL INTEREST - ZAREMBA IN RZ CONTINUES: “Both the Confederation of the Crown of Poland and the editorial board of 'Do Rzeczy' are today simply regular allies of Putin's political interest. I am more interested in those Poles who are neither in intent nor in deed. But who, by succumbing to, and sometimes using, inflammatory anti-Ukrainian propaganda, are paving the way for a reorientation of Polish policy in a direction increasingly comfortable for Putin.”
-- AS LONG AS JAROSŁAW KACZYŃSKI IS THE LEADER OF PIS, A REVISION OF THE LINE TOWARDS EMULATING ORBÁN OR ROBERT FICO SEEMS UNLIKELY - STATES PIOTR ZAREMBA IN RZ: “As long as Jarosław Kaczyński is the leader of PiS, a revision of the line towards emulating Orbán or Robert Fico seems unlikely. The 76-year-old politician carefully avoids verbal aggression towards fighting Ukraine. But what about the next generations of this camp? Przemysław Czarnek has no problem with such aggression.”

-- THERE ARE NO POLITICIANS IN POLAND OR GERMANY FOR WHOM POLISH-GERMAN CLOSENESS IS IMPORTANT - ANNA WOLFF-POWĘSKA IN GW: “Today, neither in Poland nor in Germany is there a political class for whom strengthening ties and cooperation between Poles and Germans would be a priority. For the youngest generation, war and occupation are as distant events as the November Uprising. Today, civil effort is needed in searching for common ground, common goals, and a narrative that will solidify a sense of community and belonging, not only due to common dangers but also to common positive goals.”

-- BOTH POLISH AND UKRAINIAN MEDIA HAVE RECENTLY BEEN COMPETING TO REPORT WHICH SIDE IS "WORSE" - DR MATEUSZ KAMIONKA – POLITICAL SCIENTIST, WORKS AT THE DEPARTMENT OF POLISH-UKRAINIAN STUDIES AT THE JAGELLONIAN UNIVERSITY IN AN INTERVIEW WITH ARKADIUSZ GRUSZCZYŃSKI IN GW: “I observe that both Polish and Ukrainian media have recently started competing to report which side is 'worse' – Poles or Ukrainians. In Ukrainian media, positive news about Poland and Poles rarely appears lately; mainly reports about beatings or restrictions of aid for people under temporary protection break through. Similarly, in Poland, there is little talk about the positive aspects of Ukrainian integration, and materials highlighting problems and conflicts dominate.”
-- WHY IS THERE THE GREATEST RELUCTANCE TOWARDS UKRAINIANS AMONG THE YOUNGEST POLES, AS SEEN IN VARIOUS SURVEYS - DR KAMIONKA IN AN INTERVIEW WITH ARKADIUSZ GRUSZCZYŃSKI IN GW CONTINUES: “It is worth considering why there is the greatest reluctance towards Ukrainians among the youngest Poles, as seen in various surveys, including mine conducted in Małopolska. Young people only use social media for information, and there, not only do we have poor representation of credible media, but also a lot of disinformation.”
-- THIS IS AN INTERESTING PHENOMENON – HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD THE SLOGAN "STOP THE BELARUSSIANIZATION OF POLAND"? - DR KAMIONKA STILL WITH GRUSZCZYŃSKI IN GW: “This is an interesting phenomenon – has anyone ever heard the slogan 'Stop the Belarusianization of Poland'? I never have, and I have been dealing with this topic for many years. The difference lies primarily in the fact that, however it may sound – Belarusians 'do not stand out' either in terms of the strong promotion of their identity and culture in Poland, like the Ukrainian one, or as an element of their state's potential soft power, for obvious reasons. And of course, there are also about five times fewer of them in Poland than Ukrainians.”
-- WHY DO OUR UKRAINIAN NEIGHBORS POST PHOTOS FROM FOREIGN VACATIONS AND APPEALS FOR DRONE PURCHASES ON SOCIAL MEDIA ALTERNATELY. THIS IS A DISSONANCE - DR KAMIONKA STILL IN GW: “War and 21st-century technology in Europe look different from what we remember from our grandparents' stories. At the same time, not all of us are specialists in psychology or social sciences to understand why our Ukrainian neighbors alternately post photos from foreign vacations and appeals for drone purchases on social media. This is a dissonance that many people perceive emotionally, rather than through the prism of the realities of war, and this also affects social moods.”
