Today's State of Play
-- MASTALEREK: THE PRESIDENT HAS TAKEN ALL THE POLITICAL OXYGEN ON THE RIGHT, WIPLER ON POTENTIAL COALITIONS INVOLVING KONFEDERACJA: WE ARE FOR TUSK AND KACZYŃSKI TO REST IN CIECHOCINEK, NOT SHAPE GOVERNMENTS - 300LIVE: https://300polityka.pl/pl/live
-- FOLLOWING THE FIRST HUNDRED DAYS OF HIS PRESIDENCY, OVER 53 PERCENT OF PARTICIPANTS IN AN OPINIA24 SURVEY FOR TYGODNIK POLITYKA RATE PRESIDENT NAWROCKI AS "GOOD" AND "VERY GOOD" - THE SURVEY IS DESCRIBED BY MARIUSZ JANICKI: “21 percent of respondents (a decisive majority being men) rate these 100 days as very good, 32 percent – as good. Bad – 15 percent, and very bad – only 11 percent. A significant portion is undecided, as as many as 21 percent chose the answer ‘difficult to say’ (here, conversely, a large majority are women). In total, there are 53 percent in favor and 26 percent against. This is a significant lead. Nawrocki’s supporters seem satisfied with their choice and maintain a positive opinion of the president.”
-- NOTHING WOULD HAVE CHANGED, AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EVEN MORE SO. 40 PERCENT OF RESPONDENTS IN THIS "THIRD ROUND" CHOSE KAROL NAWROCKI, 30 PERCENT – RAFAŁ TRZASKOWSKI - JANICKI ON A HYPOTHETICAL OUTCOME IF THE ELECTIONS WERE HELD AGAIN NOW: “Nothing would have changed, and it would have been even more so. 40 percent of respondents in this 'third round' chose Karol Nawrocki, 30 percent – Rafał Trzaskowski, and 19 percent would not have bothered to go to the polls, with the rest finding it 'difficult to say.' Again, PiS voters opted for Nawrocki, but with very close results also for supporters of Konfederacja and Braun's party; every fourth supporter of Polska 2050 indicated Nawrocki. It is evident that the internal disputes on the right bypass the president, and as long as he himself does not get involved in right-wing power plays, he can count on significant support.”
-- EVEN IF THE PARTY LEADERSHIPS ARE DISAGREED, THE VOTERS ARE QUITE UNITED AND CAN CALL THEIR LEADERS TO ORDER. THIS IS ALSO A WARNING TO THE LIBERALS NOT TO COUNT TOO MUCH ON AN EXOTIC COALITION WITH MENTZEN - CONTINUES THE FIRST DEPUTY EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF TYGODNIK POLITYKA: “In all questions, supporters of the three right-wing groupings responded similarly and diametrically differently from sympathizers of parties from the ruling camp, especially Civic Coalition. This is also a hint regarding future government alliances: even if the party leaderships are in conflict, the voters are quite united and can call their leaders to order. This is also a warning to the liberals not to count too much on an exotic coalition with Mentzen, because his voters and the general right-wing opinion will not allow it, and Nawrocki’s call for unity will become an alibi for a right-wing agreement, even against Kaczyński, who will have no other choice.”
-- KACZYŃSKI HAD A GOOD INTUITION CHOOSING NAWROCKI AS THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, BUT HE HIMSELF AND HIS PARTY DID NOT FOLLOW THIS INTUITION, DECIDING TO CHANGE NOTHING - CONTINUES MARIUSZ JANICKI: “Kaczyński had a good intuition choosing Nawrocki as the presidential candidate, but he himself and his party did not follow this intuition; he decided to change nothing and play the same game as in 2015, with the same set of ideas and people. And thus, he remained the old right, as brutal as before, but much less attractive. Nawrocki is currently avoiding the PiS pitfall because he adds physical prowess, a leather jacket, kebabs, fan culture, etc., to the radical right – tactics so simple that it's surprising they are effective.”

-- THE RULING COALITION LACKS A DISTINCT MODERATELY CONSERVATIVE WING THAT WOULD BE ABLE TO COMPETE FOR MORE MODERATE VOTERS - BRONISŁAW KOMOROWSKI IN AN INTERVIEW WITH MARTA KURZYŃSKA IN INTERIA: “The ruling coalition lacks a distinct moderately conservative wing that would be able to compete for more moderate Law and Justice voters. Focusing on strengthening the PSL, emphasizing its ability to compete with Law and Justice, could be a way to rebuild coalition capabilities after the next elections.”
-- THE PRESIDENT IS NOT PAYING FEUDAL HOMAGE TO JAROSŁAW KACZYŃSKI. HE SEEMS TO HAVE SUCCEEDED IN MAINTAINING SOME INDEPENDENCE - CONTINUES KOMOROWSKI IN AN INTERVIEW WITH MARTA KURZYŃSKA IN INTERIA: “It is evident that he is not paying feudal homage to Jarosław Kaczyński. He seems to have succeeded in maintaining some independence, building alternative, parallel relations with Konfederaci who are not on the same path as Jarosław Kaczyński. Is this an element of an agreement between PiS and President Nawrocki? I doubt it. So, I rather interpret this as confirmation of President Nawrocki's growing desire to go his own way. He is not on the same path as Jarosław Kaczyński.”

-- "ARE YOU HERE, NATION?" – NAWROCKI SHOUTED. AND TUSK WHISPERED ABOUT JOY - PIOTR PACEWICZ IN OKO.PRESS: “To Karol Nawrocki’s combative shouts about Polish Christian-national existence, Donald Tusk responded with a story about the anniversary love of Polish women and men. Nawrocki’s speech was archaic, like a quote from Mochnacki, which was its leitmotif. Tusk’s vision of open patriotism was too cautious and lyrical to be inspiring.”
-- NAWROCKI WAS STIRRING, TUSK WAS PUTTING TO SLEEP THIS TIME - CONTINUES PACEWICZ IN OKO: “Nawrocki thundered, shouted, and gestured as if he had just come from the gym. Tusk was subdued, focused, spoke quietly and without pauses for applause. Nawrocki was as noisy as today's alt-right worldwide, Tusk like liberalism in crisis. Nawrocki was awakening, Tusk this time was lulling.”
-- TUSK WANTED TO APPEAL TO POLISH CONTENTMENT, ON WHICH RAFAŁ TRZASKOWSKI WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE ALREADY WON THE ELECTIONS. HOWEVER, THIS DIAGNOSIS IS DETACHED FROM REALITY - CONTINUES PACEWICZ IN OKO: “This narrative contrasts with the images from the Warsaw Independence March, full of hatred and contempt. Tusk wanted to appeal to Polish contentment, on which Rafał Trzaskowski was supposed to have already won the elections. However, this diagnosis is detached from reality. Polish women and men are content with their own lives and very discontent with the authorities, including Donald Tusk’s government.”

-- NAWROCKI AS THE PATRON OF THE NATIONAL UNIFICATION OF THE RIGHT - DOMINIKA SITNICKA IN OKO.PRESS: “Today, Nawrocki is popular especially among those voter groups that Law and Justice struggles to attract – among young people and thirty-somethings. Konfederacja politicians themselves suggest in the media that the president could play the role of a peacemaker in the Polish right. Sławomir Mentzen and Przemysław Wipler see him as a patron of a potential senatorial pact, a new leader of PiS who would replace Jarosław Kaczyński. Nowa Nadzieja feels it can afford such remarks because much indicates that the balance of power on the right is beginning to change. PiS is slowly settling below 30 percent in polls, Konfederacja is strengthening its dozen-plus percent, and Braun's party, Konfederacja Korony Polskiej, is starting to cross the electoral threshold. Karol Nawrocki’s pre-march announcements suggest he would gladly undertake the role proposed to him.”

-- WHAT WILL DONALD TUSK SAY TO MENTZEN, BOSAK, KACZYŃSKI, CZARNEK, OR BRAUN IF THEY GAIN POWER - TOMASZ THUN-JANOWSKI IN OKO.PRESS: “What will Donald Tusk say to Mentzen, Bosak, Kaczyński, Czarnkow, or Braun if they gain power and feel like, in the name of the same 'security,' taking society by the throat? There are more such dangerous absurdities. Polish migration policy has become a hostage of political warfare and a lack of imagination. The rule of law is also falling victim to it, yet human rights are simply a part of the legal system and are binding even during war. They are not regulations for good and peaceful times. They were not introduced through great international effort after World War II to make governing easier. Grandiose as it may sound, they are a fundamental part of Europe’s legal heritage.”
-- PUSHING PEOPLE TO THE SOCIAL MARGINS SOLELY BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT FROM EUROPE, HAVE A WORSE PASSPORT, OR A DIFFERENT SKIN COLOR IS SOMETHING I CONSIDER AS EGREGIOUS, ILLEGAL, AND INEFFECTIVE IN A LONGER, POLITICAL DIMENSION - THUN-JANOWSKI'S CONCLUSION: “The truth about the equality of human rights does not mean, as Prime Minister Donald Tusk or Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz often suggest, living in a fantasy world. Only by accepting the premise of equality can we begin a conversation about real access to education, healthcare, the labor market, housing, etc. This is a conversation about the shape of our society. Pushing people to the social margins solely because they are not from Europe, have a worse passport, or a different skin color is something I consider as equally egregious, illegal, and ineffective in a longer, political dimension.”

-- KSEF LIKE A TICKING TIME BOMB. SPECIAL SERVICES HAVE NOT CHECKED IT - PAWEŁ ROCHOWICZ IN RZ: “The central database of all Polish business transactions, conceived as a tool for the tax authorities, could be a tempting target for foreign intelligence agencies. This invention from peacetime is dangerous in wartime – experts warn.”
