The pandemic was a test for business, forcing changes such as digital transformation for pharmaceutical and healthcare companies. This also applies to the healthcare system, which had to adapt to the new pandemic reality overnight. “The pandemic accelerated changes we’ve been contemplating for 20 years,” Irma Veberic stated in a conversation at Impact’21.
However, for companies in the healthcare sector, the pandemic brought an even more significant lesson.
Veberic also emphasized that COVID-19 has not yet fully revealed its detrimental impact on patient health. This is not only due to the consequences of the disease itself but also because patients suffering from other conditions did not receive medical care. The consequences of this situation are yet to come, our interlocutor said.
“However, the pandemic also had a positive impact, for instance, telemedicine,” Veberic said. She added that after the pandemic, Roche Poland is embarking on a revolution in healthcare.
“We are still functioning in a very traditional reality,” she stated. She pointed out that this includes not only the digitalization of corporations, which still use faxes and, in a sense, operate in the “stone age,” but also the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
“We collect a lot of data, now it’s time to use it to treat patients individually. Previously, we treated everyone with one pill; today, we can measure everything and tailor treatment to the specific person. Here too, we must move beyond the stone age,” our interlocutor concluded.

Olga Malinkiewicz discussed how to effectively commercialize a new technology. She emphasized that building multiple factories is key.
"Even at this moment, with the first newly opened factory, we should already be breaking ground for the construction of another one, ten times larger than the current one," Malinkiewicz explained.
It turns out there are already interested parties in building such a factory. "There is a high probability that this factory will be built in Japan; we have our first investor there who believed in us back in 2015. Now, a declaration has come from his side. Simultaneously, the possibility has emerged that the Japanese government might want to co-finance part of this factory," Olga Malinkiewicz revealed.

Anna Lewandowska also spoke to us about the challenges of doing business amidst rising inflation and supply chain congestion. "In eco-products, ingredients and raw materials are expensive. And this is a challenge, especially in the current conditions of increased inflation. Another challenge is supply congestion. For my Phlov cosmetics brand, this means we cannot plan marketing campaigns as easily as before. We have delays: we are currently launching a new line of hair cosmetics that we were supposed to introduce several months ago," our interviewee illustrates the problem.
