Kierwiński:

Szumowski was meant to be a Polish hero, but turned out to be just another PiS politician with a spine broken by Kaczyński
Yesterday, we witnessed a statement from Minister Szumowski, the Minister of Health, who declared that the elections could proceed if they were conducted by mail. Every minister in the Polish government, before assuming office, takes an oath in which they pledge to uphold the provisions of the Constitution and other laws of the Republic of Poland, and that the good of the homeland and the well-being of citizens will be their highest command. Yesterday, Minister Szumowski broke that oath. Yesterday, Minister Szumowski demonstrated that he is guided not by the well-being of citizens, but by the interests of a political party. For many weeks, Minister Szumowski was portrayed as a hero who would defeat the coronavirus. Minister Szumowski was meant to be a Polish hero, but it turned out he is just another PiS politician with a spine broken by Jarosław Kaczyński. Yesterday, Minister Szumowski – it became apparent – fully aligned himself with the scenario written by Jarosław Kaczyński. Minister Szumowski is another politician from PiS who is constructing a false dilemma that greatly suits Kaczyński. Mail-in elections now, immediately, or elections in two years. This is a false, political dilemma. Minister Szumowski's statement yesterday was a political gambit, not the opinion of a doctor or a specialist. One could say that Minister Szumowski has replaced his professional ethics and his conscience with the dictates and orders of Jarosław Kaczyński. Minister Szumowski is yet another minister in the PiS government who is not focused on fighting the coronavirus, but on the interests of Nowogrodzka [PiS headquarters]. He is not focused on fighting the coronavirus, but on the elections. What is the legal basis for the Minister of Health to determine whether or not elections should be held, and in what format? From Minister Szumowski, we expect only that he will ensure the health security of Poles, and what he said yesterday has nothing to do with the health security of Poles – stated Marcin Kierwiński at a press briefing in front of the Sejm.

Kropiwnicki:

If Even One Person Gets Infected During These Elections, Szumowski's Criminal Liability Could Reach 12 Years of Imprisonment

- The most important doctor in the country, the Minister of Health, elected to protect Poles, to care for the health of all of us, yesterday sacrificed the health of Poles for his own political interest and thereby clearly violated Article 165 of the Penal Code, which clearly states that whoever exposes many people to the danger of infectious disease is criminally liable. And this is a classic case of the Minister of Health, who instead of counteracting the epidemic and infectious diseases, is allowing for postal voting. In the event that even one person gets infected during these elections, whether it's a mail carrier, an attendant, a commission member, or an ordinary person, his criminal liability could reach up to 12 years of strict imprisonment. This is truly a high penalty, and the Minister of Health should bear responsibility for it. Life and health are truly more important than a political career, and he, as a professor, doctor, minister, and MP, should know this – stated Robert Kropiwnicki at a press briefing in front of the Sejm.

Tomczyk on Szumowski's Recommendation: "We Decided to Prepare a Motion to the Prosecutor's Office. This Motion Will Be Filed on Monday"

- De facto yesterday, Minister Szumowski admitted that we are dealing with an extraordinary situation, but paradoxically, the commentary to Minister Szumowski's words should be: the mask has fallen. That everyone has seen how the situation looks. One can strive for a goal over the bodies of others. We have decided to prepare a motion to the prosecutor's office. This motion will be filed on Monday. Minister Kropiwnicki spoke about this. Article 165 [of the Penal Code], whoever endangers human life is subject to sanction. 8 years in prison threatens anyone who endangers the health of Polish citizens today, but Minister Szumowski plays an exceptional role in society today. Until now, people saw him as someone who informs about the threat. Today, from a person who informs about the threat, he has become a person who brings the threat upon Poles. There absolutely cannot be our agreement to this. Today, we should all know that no Polish citizen can be faced with a dilemma. Health and life or the right to vote. No Polish citizen can be faced with a dilemma that the authorities place before them. In the coming hours or days, we will present a solution that will resolve this stalemate. So that we can all, in a sensible way, re-engage in this political discussion - stated Cezary Tomczyk at a press briefing in front of the Sejm.

Hołownia Files Lawsuit Against State Treasury for Personal Rights Infringement, Citing Inability to Fully Exercise Electoral Rights

- This petition, "Free the Elections," not only for the presidential election but also for our own life choices, which we would like to make again, has been downloaded and submitted to the Prime Minister's Chancellery by over 30,000 Poles. I hope that more will join them. That together we will continue this legal offensive against the lawlessness we are observing - stated Szymon Hołownia at a press briefing in front of the Sejm.

- As a citizen, I do not intend to stop acting within the law. I do not have a political party that can now cook up some deal in the Sejm with this or that side. All I have is that I am a citizen and I have my rights as a citizen, which is why yesterday I filed a lawsuit in the district court in Warsaw for the protection of personal rights against the State Treasury, represented by the Marshal of the Sejm and Prime Minister Morawiecki. This is a lawsuit for the protection of a personal right, which, according to many specialists we consulted, is the passive right to vote. This is a request to acknowledge that I, a citizen of the Republic of Poland, while running for president, am currently unable to fully exercise my passive right to vote because we do not have a campaign that should last at least 81 days in its entirety, in all its aspects, that there is no equal competition, that there is no guarantee of conducting elections in a fair manner. Moreover, there isn't even a date for them. We are a little over twenty days before the current date and we do not know the effective date of the elections, nor the method of their conduct. My passive right to vote is being violated, but the passive right to vote of candidates is also being violated. The active right to vote is also a personal right of 30 million Poles - he continued.

Hołownia:

Poczta Polska Allegedly Initiating Preparations for Elections on Prime Minister's Orders. I Ask, On What Grounds? There is No Legal Basis, Yet They Act. This is a Matter for the Tribunal of State.
Poczta Polska has allegedly already undertaken efforts, on the Prime Minister's orders, to prepare for these elections. I ask, on what grounds? The Constitution binds us, specifically Article 7, which clearly states that public administration bodies act based on and within the limits of the law. There is no legal basis, yet they act. This is a matter for the Tribunal of State - stated Szymon Hołownia at a press briefing in front of the Sejm.

Hołownia:

I Hope the Court Grants My Motion and Swiftly Issues an Order Mandating the Marshal and Prime Minister to Declare a State of Natural Disaster and Postpone Elections

- I am asking the court to urgently issue interim relief within the framework of this lawsuit, thereby requesting the Prime Minister and the Marshal of the Sejm to postpone the elections. This is only possible by declaring a state of natural disaster. I hope the court will grant my request, my motion, and swiftly, without delay, issue the interim relief, verdict, or order mandating the Marshal of the Sejm and the Prime Minister to declare a state of natural disaster and postpone the elections - stated Szymon Hołownia at a press briefing in front of the Sejm.

Szumowski's Statement Was Not That of a Doctor, But Solely a Politician

- This is moral blackmail. What Minister Szumowski said was not the statement of a doctor, but unfortunately, solely that of a politician. There is no data, and Minister Szumowski himself, who some time ago questioned masks and now orders their wearing, knows this well. We have no idea what will happen in two years. In two years, we might have three mutated strains of this virus, and we will only have a vaccine for one. We might have a completely different epidemic on our hands, we might have a drought, a hurricane, other complications. This is a backdoor introduction of a solution that has only one goal: for the United Right, with President Duda, to remain in power, and for him to serve his office and term for two extra illegal years. This is moral blackmail, because what is Minister Szumowski telling us? He's saying: either fraudulent postal elections, conducted illegally, at post offices, forcing people to participate and risk their lives, or our proposal, the proposal submitted by Jarosław Gowin, the leader of Porozumienie, from which Minister Szumowski originates. Is this concern for the good of Polish citizens, or concern for the good of Porozumienie and the political stability of the United Right camp? It was painful to listen to, and I must say that I don't know how Minister Szumowski will find his way in this reality when his political adventure ends, but I would like to remind him once again, because deep down I still have a lot of respect for him for what he did before he entered politics. Please remember, Mr. Minister, that one is a minister for a time, but a doctor, a professor, and one's name and surname are for a lifetime – stated Szymon Hołownia at a press briefing in front of the Sejm.

Kidawa-Błońska:

I'd like to know what support cultural workers will receive, as I feel we're discussing grand programs, but this help isn't available to them here and now.

- There are areas of very important life for us that are not – in my opinion – sufficiently cared for. Today, I wanted to speak about culture. Recently, Deputy Prime Minister Gliński stated in the Sejm that 4 billion PLN are allocated for culture and for people working in culture. And then, in response to questions, he spoke about money for a digital film archive, theatres, and what's happening online. He mentioned that there will be 2.5 million PLN in support for people in need of grants. And frankly, I don't know where these billions he spoke of are. He said there would be money for programs, that these programs are being drawn up. That's true, they are being drawn up. But by the time these programs are drawn up and implemented, it will be autumn, and people in culture, and that's a huge number of people – not just artists, but cultural animators, people working in small cultural centers – they have been left without a livelihood. So how can they wait for support and help in autumn? This help is needed here and now. Help will give them a chance to live, to survive this difficult period, if they receive it today. I am very pleased that there is talk of so much money for culture, only I would like to know what support cultural workers will receive, because I have the impression that we are talking about grand programs, but this help is not available to them here and now. And this is a question for Prime Minister Gliński. Let him tell us how he intends to spend these 4 billion PLN, because these 4 billion PLN are actually all the money that is spent on culture annually. So it's good that there will be a lot of money, but what will it be spent on, because so far I only hear promises – stated Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska at a briefing before the Sejm.

Szumowski Should Come Out and Say: No, Spring Elections Cannot Be Held

- Elections, absolutely yes, but fair elections and at a safe time for Poles. The most important thing is that Poles want to go to the polls and do not risk their lives. I have not resigned from the elections, and anyone who says or suggests such words is simply lying. From the beginning, I have been saying loudly: elections cannot be held on May 10, and fortunately, my voice and the voice of the citizens have been heard. There are no elections, and I am only surprised by Minister Szumowski, because he is a doctor, after all, and it is he who says that the worst is yet to come. In difficult times, I expect courage and truth-telling from politicians, from people in general. He knows perfectly well that these spring elections cannot be held. He should come out and say: no, spring elections cannot be held, let's focus on what is important – stated Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska at a briefing in front of the Sejm.

Kidawa-Błońska:

Why Aren't We Ordering from Polish Entrepreneurs to Make Masks and Suits, Instead of Just Showing Off?

- Let's focus on matters related to culture, because we need it greatly, as a society we won't survive the pandemic if we don't have this spiritual strength, and culture provides that. Let's focus on education, because the majority of children in our country are excluded from the current educational system. Let the Minister of Education focus on the education of our youth. Let's give support to local governments, which are fighting, supplying hospitals. Let's look with admiration at citizens who are delivering masks, protective gear, supporting each other. We're talking about the plane that brought masks from China. Why aren't we placing orders with Polish entrepreneurs who can sew masks, sew suits, produce liquids? They can do it, but the government must turn to them, place orders there, not put on a show. Private individuals have brought more protective equipment from abroad than the government. So let's start dealing with what's important, and we're not discussing elections right now, because they must take place at a time that is safe for Poles - stated Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska at a briefing in front of the Sejm.

Kidawa-Błońska:

For Now, There Are No Postal Elections Because There Isn't Even a Law. And Anyone Preparing for These Elections is Breaking the Law.
For now, there are no postal elections because there isn't even a law yet. And anyone preparing for these elections, preparing materials, is breaking the law. You can't place orders if there's no law. Let's all take ourselves seriously during this difficult time. Let's not deceive, let's not lie, and let's have the courage to speak the truth. Today, there are no elections on May 10th, and that's what I wanted, and I believe we will bring about democratic elections at a safe time when everyone can participate, and that's what I will focus on now – stated Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska at a briefing in front of the Sejm.

15:17

Kidawa-Błońska:

I Cannot Imagine Amending the Constitution for a Single Event

- I treat the Constitution very seriously. It is the foundation of our democracy, the functioning of our society. Poles have agreed that we will live in the country under such a Constitution, and I cannot imagine changing the Constitution for a single event. The Constitution is not a solution for one matter, but a direction for how we are to live and act in our country. I cannot imagine working on the Constitution in this Sejm, managed in such a way for processing documents. It is simply unserious. We can one day consider and find wiser, better solutions, but it must be done seriously, not as putting out fires. The Polish Constitution provides these solutions and is a good document, but it requires courage from the Prime Minister - stated Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska at a briefing in front of the Sejm.

Presidents of Poland and the USA are holding a phone conversation regarding cooperation in the era of the coronavirus pandemic

A phone conversation is underway between the Presidents of Poland and the USA concerning cooperation in the era of the coronavirus pandemic.

18:48

Szczerski on the conversation between PAD and Trump: Poland is sending a military medical mission to Chicago to support local healthcare and for doctors to gain experience treating coronavirus patients
  • President Andrzej Duda had a half-hour phone conversation with US President Donald Trump. The conversation was initiated by President Donald Trump. It concerned three issues. Firstly, Polish-American cooperation in the era of the coronavirus epidemic, bilateral cooperation. Secondly, NATO's involvement in the current situation and future challenges, and thirdly, economic cooperation in combating the economic consequences of the coronavirus epidemic – stated Krzysztof Szczerski after the conversation between President Duda and President Trump.
  • Regarding bilateral cooperation, there were three important topics. Firstly, the issue of cooperation between Polish and US research institutes regarding research into a vaccine and a cure for coronavirus. Here, the American side has declared an openness to cooperate with Polish experts and conduct joint research into a vaccine and a cure for this disease. Secondly, the issue of modern, rapid coronavirus tests that Poland wants to obtain from the USA. The USA is also open to such cooperation in supplying these modern tests to Poland. And thirdly, very important information that the President conveyed to President Trump: Poland is sending a military medical mission to Chicago, Illinois, to support the local healthcare system, but also for Polish and American doctors to jointly gain practical experience in the current, ongoing treatment of patients infected with coronavirus. Thus, there will be three such very practical examples of Polish-American cooperation today, in the era of a pandemic that affects both Poland and, to a large extent, the USA – he continued.
  • The presidents also emphasized that there is a need for a strong and clear role for NATO in this situation today. They stressed the need to discuss possibilities for greater involvement of NATO forces in terms of military medicine, as well as other resources available to NATO, so that even in the current situation we are struggling with, a strong transatlantic bond can be demonstrated, also in terms of security. There is also a readiness to discuss how to increase NATO's presence and actions regarding the pandemic, and of course, thirdly, as I said, the issue of economic development. Both the USA and Poland have frozen their economies in a similar way due to the pandemic. Today, both countries are preparing a plan to exit this economic freeze. Both countries will undoubtedly also feel the economic effects of this pandemic, so the presidents also discussed how, through economic cooperation, in bilateral business, investment, and trade contacts, both economies can be supported in a rapid return to the path of development after the worst period of the pandemic ends – the presidential minister noted.
