"We see that the Church cannot cope on its own. This issue has been in the public sphere for several years now, since an initial conspiracy of silence broke. It is clear that all procedures and actions taken so far are insufficient. Stricter penalties have nothing to do with it, because the point is to make these penalties judicable. It is easiest for PiS to increase penalties. The point is to judge such people," said Sławomir Neumann, head of the Civic Platform-Civic Coalition (PO-KO) parliamentary club, in an interview with Dominika Wielowieyska on TOK FM Radio's Morning Show.

"At 9:30 AM, Grzegorz Schetyna will present at a press conference the draft amendments to the Penal Code that we want to propose. We have drafted this project, gathered signatures. We will submit it today. [The draft includes] no statute of limitations for pedophilic offenses and a lifetime ban on working with children," he added.

- No, I think Jarosław Kaczyński's words [that whoever lays a hand on the Church lays a hand on Poland] are presented in a completely different light today and look completely different. I am a person of faith, a believer, and I will always defend the Church community. The community is more than bishops and parish priests. It is all believers - stated Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz in an interview with Konrad Piasecki on TVN24's "Rozmowa Piaseckiego".

- I disagree with attacking the Church community as a whole. Bishops and parish priests have their sins and faults and must be held accountable for them, they must put their house in order, because it is in the interest of the community. There is truly a place in Poland for believers and non-believers, and serious consideration for both. Such extreme opinions, on the one hand, the ruling party, which cynically wants to exploit religion, faith, and the Church in order to win further elections, and on the other hand, the more extreme, left-wing voices that attack strongly. I disagree with both of them - added the leader of PSL.

„*Archbishop Głodź's statement is something that shows, proves, makes it clear to us that this is precisely why the Church cannot purge itself, because it has hierarchs who see no problem with it, who think it can be swept under the rug. The Church in Gdańsk has an unresolved issue with Father Jankowski and now with Father Cybula*” - said Sławomir Neumann, the head of the Civic Platform–Coalition Civic Party parliamentary club, in an interview with Dominika Wielowieyska on TOK FM Radio's Morning broadcast.

- I would expect a meeting with His Holiness Francis, a conversation on this topic by the entire Episcopate. And a decision from the Holy Father. He truly knows what decisions to make and is misunderstood in many places. In my opinion, he is even unacceptable in many places, but he has a truly heroic mission that he is carrying out: cleansing the Church and leading it as it should be led - stated Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz in an interview with Konrad Piasecki on TVN24's "Rozmowa Piaseckiego".

Macierewicz travels with security as if he were a minister, despite being a long-discredited head of a pseudo-commission. As the Deputy Speaker of the Senate emphasized, situations like the Church sweeping pedophilia cases under the rug should absolutely not happen. - We know there are new guidelines from the Holy Father. They will come into effect on June 1st - he added. - We have quite promising reactions from the hierarchy. It should also be remembered that many hierarchs had already introduced a very good system of warning and informing earlier, for example, Bishop Libera in Płock - he continued.

It's hard to comment on [Archbishop Głodź's words that 'he doesn't watch just anything']. We know the internet statistics which show that this film ['Only Don't Tell Anyone'] enjoys immense popularity. I believe that the hierarchs of the Polish Church should also familiarize themselves with this material sooner or later, to know what Poles are living by, and also the faithful of the Church - stated Adam Bielan in an interview with Beata Lubecka on Radio Zet.

With PiS, and Jarosław Kaczyński in particular, toughening penalties for various crimes is nothing new, as PiS itself was founded on this, on a new draft of the Penal Code that we submitted in 2000-2001. If one looks at our achievements in parliament and the postulates we made while still in opposition, we have spoken about this toughening many times. The Penal Code needs to be examined. We will certainly submit, as our leader announced yesterday, a proposal to toughen this code. It's difficult for me to say [when it will be submitted]. This project is ready. It's not as if we only started dealing with this after that film, because at the beginning of our term, despite opposition in the Sejm, we pushed through a law establishing the transparency of the pedophile register. - The leaders of the Polish People's Party (PSL) are becoming increasingly nervous because all opinion polls show that a great many PSL voters have drifted away from the party after its decision to veer left and join the European Coalition (KE) - stated Adam Bielan in an interview with Beata Lubecka on Radio Zet.

- He received an invitation, so he will appear. It has happened before when I was the PiS spokesperson. No, no [I didn't suggest this idea], I am intensely running my campaign. We know that there will be a very high mobilization of voters for Civic Platform and the left. We must do everything to make our voters aware that these elections are truly important. - Whoever raises a hand against Polish children, raises a hand against Poland. This is a very important realization. We must constantly remember this, today and tomorrow. The legislative change concerns a swift, instantaneous reaction from the Polish parliament - said Grzegorz Schetyna during a press conference.

- We want to change three laws. We must very clearly abolish the statute of limitations for pedophilic offenses and crimes. We must introduce an absolute ban on working with children and youth for convicted individuals. Finally, we want to propose a team of special prosecutors, who can be appointed by the Children's Ombudsman, and who will be dedicated to handling these cases - Schetyna added.

- Within an hour, this bill will be placed in the Sejm Marshal's office - Schetyna assured.

“The European Coalition has failed. The European Coalition has essentially already lost these elections because this ship took on too many people, too different and too conflicted. This is likely draining the fuel. You can see it in the terribly sluggish election campaign of the European Coalition. They truly don’t have that common thread they could talk about, because how do you unite that commonality if on one hand there are people with more progressive views, and on the other, very radically conservative ones” – said Adrian Zandberg from Razem in a conversation with Paweł Lisicki on Polskie Radio Channel III.

"The narrative that we have polarization and that Poland is in war trenches, with half the nation on one side and half on the other, and they can't stand each other, is false. In my opinion, this is an element of a story spun so that Grzegorz Schetyna could build the political project he built and to marginalize those forces on the right who are dissatisfied with PiS. - We are filing a motion with the Ombudsman to quash the disgraceful verdict, to erase the shame of the Brest court's verdict, and to rehabilitate Wincenty Witos. New possibilities have emerged that offer a chance to revisit this matter - stated Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz at a briefing. - This is the only way, as he has the authority to file an extraordinary appeal and quash this verdict, because it should not burden a national hero - he added.

- I have many friends in politics. I also have friends who are not involved in politics. This is my social discovery of recent years, but a truly lovely person - Julia Przyłębska. She is the President of the Constitutional Tribunal, but these are entirely private acquaintances, I really enjoy visiting her - Jarosław Kaczyński said in an interview with Monika Zamachowska and Michał Olszański on TVP2's "Pytanie na Śniadanie". 

Everything is in the hands of Law and Justice, which has managed to process bills overnight, so I think the upcoming Sejm session is the moment when serious work can begin on this project and see it through to the end. We are appealing to the Prime Minister to initiate the action of the Joint Commission of the Government and the Episcopate, which could take up this issue” – said Piotr Zgorzelski from PSL-UED at a press conference. “The place for priest pedophiles is in prison, not in a home for retired priests. All perpetrators of pedophilic acts should go to prison, as long as their health allows. This applies to all other individuals who have committed pedophilia, not just priests. Today, we are submitting a bill on the non-statute of limitations for pedophilia crimes. Any responsibility for pedophilia crimes other than accountability before a court is a farce. Every case of pedophilia should be considered under the Penal Code” – said Kamila Gasiuk-Pihowicz from PO-KO. “We appeal to Mr. Jarosław Kaczyński, we call on him to make a public declaration and answer the question today. Will PiS support the bill on the non-statute of limitations for pedophilia crimes. Today, we have a black and white situation. PiS will either stand with the victims, or it will stand with the perpetrators of pedophilia” – she added.

- The timing of this film's release coincides with the election date. Before the local elections, we had "Clergy," now we again have some film attacking the Church, so I don't think it's a coincidence. But when I have some time... - he added.

- I haven't watched, and I won't watch, this film [by Tomasz Sekielski]. Has the Church not dealt with this issue? I think it could have done more. I agree with that. But I take Cardinal Polak's statement on this matter at face value. I believe this attitude of the Church will change diametrically - stated Zbigniew Gryglas in a conversation with journalists in the Sejm.

When asked why he hadn't watched it, he replied: - I didn't watch the play "Klatwa" (The Curse), nor did I watch the film "Kler" (Clergy). Responding to a journalist's remark that it's difficult to comment without watching the film, the PiS MP replied: - I will never read "Mein Kampf", but I can say that this book led to the greatest crime in the world. I am not comparing [Sekielski's film to Mein Kampf], I am just giving an example.

Responding to all the opposition's ideas, I can only say this: that they are greatly embracing these tirades and the attack delivered here yesterday by the former head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, who suggested that the Polish police, in this case, are under some political heel and are not fulfilling their duties. I want to appeal once again. It doesn't matter if today the head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration is a PiS politician, and yesterday or the day before it was someone from Civic Platform, the task of the Polish police is to pursue criminals. If politicians from Civic Platform want to conduct these kinds of tirades for the needs of an election campaign, let them do it directed at me, at politicians, but they should stay away from the police and other services. Saying that pedophiles are under the umbrella of the police, that the police are not taking action, is something exceptionally indecent, especially from the mouth of a former head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, a politician from a party during which police booths burned down under the Russian embassy, legal demonstrations were broken up, etc. The police are acting in this matter and there is no umbrella; quite the contrary. If I were to receive information that any police officer or services subordinate to the Ministry of Interior and Administration were trying to sweep a case under the rug because it concerned a clergyman, a priest, they would be immediately disciplined and removed from the police – stated Joachim Brudziński at a conference in Szczecin.

“The Civic Platform has embarrassed itself once again today. They have terrible luck, because the bill they submitted today is a bill that was submitted when they were in power. In 2014, our small Solidary Poland club submitted a package of solutions aimed at protecting children from pedophilia, including a registry of pedophiles and the idea that Grzegorz Schetyna spoke about today” - said Deputy Minister Patryk Jaki at a press conference.

“Today everyone wants to fight, but when we came to the Sejm, the Platform did not want an open [pedophile] registry, the National Court Register [KRS], the Supreme Court [SN] had doubts, and the Ombudsman [RPO] also torpedoed the project” - he added. 

Regarding the Platform's ideas, I can only say this. Please analyze the vote when PiS submitted the bill concerning the pedophile registry. Please analyze the words spoken from the podium and how PO politicians voted. Today they are full of indignation and ready to present far-reaching demands. PiS's stance on this matter was presented yesterday by President Kaczyński in Szczecin, and everything that needed to be said on this issue has been said. What has been declared will be implemented through the legislative process: raising the victim's age, eliminating the possibility of suspended sentences for pedophilic acts, and also raising the scale that a court can apply to a person committing such an act – stated Joachim Brudziński at a press conference in Szczecin.

“The day of reckoning has come. We must hear the confession of the sinful Church. We know today that Tomasz Sekielski’s film enjoys enormous popularity on the internet, with nearly 6 million people having watched it” - stated the leader of Wiosna, Robert Biedroń, at a press conference. - “I appeal to the president of TVP to broadcast this film on TVP, on Program I, during prime time. Public television serves a mission. The law mandates public television to disseminate a mission that will present the most important social issues, and this is one of the most significant social problems”.

“We appeal to the Prosecutor General to establish a special team to investigate all cases of crimes committed by clergy presented in this film. We must do this because the scale of the abuses presented is immense, the situation is exceptional, and requires swift action. We know that the Church has been covering up such cases for years, hiding criminals, and there is a risk of obfuscation and perpetrators going into hiding. The prosecutor must act decisively and quickly” - he added. - “The third matter is the establishment of a permanent team of prosecutors who will investigate such crimes within the Catholic Church, as has been the case in other countries”.

"Neither Kaczyński, nor Schetyna, nor Kosiniak-Kamysz, nor Lubnauer have any moral right to speak about pedophilia. None of them did anything when we, with the 'Don't Be Afraid' foundation, published the map of pedophilia. The map of pedophilia among Polish priests contains over 400 cases, the kind that Tomasz Sekielski shows in his film. Politicians from the opposition, and the ruling party, did nothing" - said Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus at a press conference.

The President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, commented on the film "Kler" (Clergy). He admitted that it made an impression on him and emphasized that "one thing is certain: we must fight pedophilia ruthlessly and everywhere." The President's statement appeared on Twitter.

- Today, when the European Coalition says that a hand raised against Polish children is a hand raised against the Polish state, Jarosław Kaczyński shouts that a hand raised against the church is a hand raised against Poland. These words – more than any others – reveal the true face of the ruling party. If the Law and Justice party (PiS) wants to be credible in the fight against pedophilia, then the Prosecutor General should initiate proceedings ex officio in all recently disclosed incidents of a pedophilic nature involving priests – it was stated in the position of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) regarding the establishment of a Truth and Redress Commission concerning pedophilia in the Catholic Church.

- I thought there would be the usual haughty silence when the Church is confronted with a difficult topic. First, all the bishops have to gather, they ponder what to do for a long time, and then the press spokesperson comes out and reads a statement. I thought it would be similar this time, and I'm very positively surprised. I think those are important words, the ones the primate said - Tomasz Sekielski stated in an interview with Katarzyna Kolenda-Zaleska on TVN24's "Fakty po faktach".

- This is my opinion. An external commission should be established, comprising individuals not subject to the hierarchy of bishops. They should be independent of them. A commission empowered by law, with access to church archives, capable of questioning priests and their superiors. A commission to which victims can report. – This is absurd. I wouldn't even want to get into a discussion with politicians. Everything can be politicized and reduced to an election campaign. I'll just remind you that in Poland, the election campaign ends next spring with the presidential election. - I expect the police to enter all the curias tomorrow morning; here is a list prepared by the Nie lękajcie się foundation, of hierarchs responsible for covering up pedophilia. I expect the police to enter in the morning, as they did in Mrs. Podleśna's case, and to enter all these locations and check the archives. The state must act effectively in this matter; after all, there is a suspicion of obstruction in this case. If we learned about crimes committed by another professional group, the police would be there immediately! - said Robert Biedroń in Kropka nad I.

„Grzegorz Schetyna has a very short memory, because it was we who ordered the tightening of all penalties and the pedophile registry. Let Grzegorz Schetyna look into his and his party colleagues' consciences on how they voted on these solutions. We know that this was strongly protested. I think he should remain silent on this matter,” Minister Beata Kempa said in an interview with Michał Adamczyk on „Gość Wiadomości” on TVP Info.
