Political Week Ahead: Tusk's Interrogation, Parliament on November 12th Holiday, and Independence Day Celebrations

The upcoming week is primarily marked by the results of the second round of local government elections, the interrogation of Donald Tusk by the Amber Gold parliamentary committee, and the celebrations of November 11th. Additionally, the Sejm will vote on amendments to the law concerning the November 12th holiday, allowing the bill to proceed to the president for signature.

Second Round Election Results. - I think we can realistically expect results [on Monday]. Perhaps not overnight, perhaps not at 5:00 or 6:00 AM, but I think by noon, before midday, or early afternoon... I am being cautious - said Wojciech Hermeliński in an interview with Radio Zet.

Tusk's Interrogation. On Monday at 10:00 AM, the Amber Gold parliamentary committee will interrogate former Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The President of the European Council has not yet confirmed his attendance, but he recently indicated that he would appear before the committee if his schedule allows.

Sejm on November 12th. As we wrote on 300POLITYKA, at the beginning of the Sejm's next session - on Wednesday at 2:00 PM - MPs will consider the Senate's amendments to the law concerning the November 12th holiday. The discussion of this item will last 15 minutes, followed immediately by a voting session where the aforementioned amendments will be voted upon. The bill will then be sent to the president, who will likely sign it quickly so that it can be promptly published in the Journal of Laws.

Unveiling of Lech Kaczyński's Monument. - On November 10th [i.e., the upcoming Saturday], the monument to President Lech Kaczyński will be unveiled at Piłsudski Square in Warsaw - announced the head of the Prime Minister's Chancellery, Marek Suski.

November 11th Celebrations. On Sunday, celebrations for Poland's National Independence Day will take place, with the participation of the country's most important figures. So far, the plan for President Andrzej Duda is known: he will participate in a Holy Mass, ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Niepodległa Festival on Krakowskie Przedmieście, and a ceremony for the posthumous awarding of Poland's highest state honors - the Order of the White Eagle. President Duda will also visit one of the towns organizing local celebrations for the centenary of Poland's regaining independence.

Independence March. Also on Sunday, the Independence March will once again take place through the streets of Warsaw. The event organizers have announced that this year's Warsaw march will be held under the slogan "God, Honor, Fatherland!" and will be the largest national demonstration in Europe. The march will start at 2:00 PM.

Wassermann:

I am a candidate supported by the United Right, while Majchrowski is supported by all other opposition parties. Given this balance of power, I believe my result is very good.

A significant difference. My first comment is that I am very grateful to everyone who voted for me today. I thank all the residents of Krakow who participated in the elections. I extend my sincerest congratulations to Mayor Jacek Majchrowski. I wish him successes that will be good for Krakow” - Małgorzata Wassermann from PiS told wpolsce.pl television.

In every problem in Krakow where my intervention was needed, I have always cooperated with everyone and I declare this cooperation for Krakow, for its residents. That was the case, that is the case, and that will be the case. This is the choice of Krakow residents, and I accept and respect it. Please consider that I did not have an easy situation. I am a candidate supported by the United Right, while Jacek Majchrowski is a candidate supported by all other opposition parties. Given this balance of power, I believe this result is very good” - she added.

Majchrowski:

I Promise to Continue to Faithfully Serve as Mayor of Krakow

"I wanted to thank all those who voted for me, all those who went to the polls. We had a competition between cities to see which one would have the highest turnout. A lot depended on this turnout. And so it happened. I thank those who voted, who went to the polls. I especially want to thank all those who worked as volunteers in my campaign team. Contrary to what you might assess, that the campaign was sluggish, it was a tremendous amount of work and time. I sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this victory, and there were many of them. I am deeply grateful. I can say that I promise to continue to faithfully serve in this office," said the Mayor of Krakow, Jacek Majchrowski.

Adamowicz:

Thank You for Inspiring Conversations with Tusk
I would like to thank Bogdan Borusewicz very much. I would like to thank my friend and mentor, Aleksander Hall, very much. I would like to thank Donald Tusk very much for the inspiring conversations - stated Paweł Adamowicz during election night. - I would like to thank Kacper Płażyński for our competition. I hope that many of the points that unite us, our program, we will be able to compete on within the Gdańsk City Council - he added. - Gdańsk has once again declared itself in favor of a Gdańsk of freedom, equality, solidarity, and openness - he continued.

Tusk:

A Pleasant Day. Even Lechia Won

Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, shared a particularly joyful observation on his Twitter account. He noted that it had been a "nice day," going on to highlight that "even Lechia won." This statement, accompanied by a link to his tweet (https://twitter.com/donaldtusk/status/1059175591700844544), suggests a moment of personal satisfaction and perhaps a lighthearted commentary on current events, with the football club's victory serving as a particularly pleasing footnote to an otherwise good day.

Lubnauer:

Elections Showed PiS Has a Closed Path to Big Cities

- Indeed, these elections have shown that PiS has a closed path to big cities. I’ll go further: it has a closed path to the center, because Mateusz Morawiecki turned out to be a man incapable of attracting the centrist electorate, partly because he proved to be such a typical representative of PiS, an ultra-PiS – stated Katarzyna Lubnauer on TVN24's "Kawa na ławę".

21:35

Piasecki to Lubnauer: Today, a 34% Result for PiS Translates to 42% Support in Sejm Elections

- This is a rather illusory joy, because in all post-election polls, this 34% result for PiS translates today into 42% support in the Sejm elections, and therefore it would be a result that would guarantee an outright majority - said Konrad Piasecki to Katarzyna Lubnauer on TVN24's "Kawa na ławę" (Coffee on the Table).

21:46

Kukiz:

I've received information that Wojciech Bakun from Kukiz '15 likely won in Przemyśl

- I've received information that Wojtek Bakun from the Kukiz '15 club likely won in Przemyśl, which is a PiS stronghold. We have six councillors there - stated Paweł Kukiz on TVN24's "Kawa na ławę" program.

Schetyna:

Gdańsk, Kraków, and Kielce Defended Their Self-Government

Grzegorz Schetyna, leader of Civic Platform (PO), stated that the cities of Gdańsk, Kraków, and Kielce have successfully defended their self-government. This statement was made in reference to the outcomes of local elections.

The phrase "obroniły swoją samorządność" (defended their self-government) implies that these cities, through the electoral process, resisted external pressures or attempts to undermine their local autonomy. This could refer to government interference, specific political maneuvers, or the election of candidates who were perceived as champions of local governance.

The provided link points to a tweet from Schetyna's official Twitter account (@SchetynadlaPO), which likely contains further details or a direct quote supporting this statement. The context suggests a political victory for the opposition in these major Polish cities, interpreted by Schetyna as a successful defense of democratic principles at the local level.

Local Exit Poll: Witkowski Wins Against Skurkiewicz

According to exit poll results from polling stations, Radosław Witkowski won the second round of the mayoral election in Radom. The survey was conducted by the local portal "Echo Dnia" among 500 people. Witkowski reportedly secured 56% of the votes, while Wojciech Skurkiewicz received 44%. "Gazeta Wyborcza", on the other hand, reports that data from 14 out of 114 polling stations indicates Witkowski is leading, having garnered 54.8% of the votes, with Skurkiewicz at 45.2%.

21:57

Płażyński:

I Congratulate Mr. President. I Hope the Next 5 Years Will Be Better Than the Past Ones

"I congratulate Mr. President. I hope the next 5 years will be better than the past ones. I think that what Law and Justice, what this team has achieved during this election campaign, is something very good for Gdańsk democracy, something very good for public discourse in Gdańsk. Many substantive issues have emerged. This campaign was incredibly close to the people and incredibly focused on their needs," said Kacper Płażyński, the PiS candidate in Gdańsk, after the announcement of the exit poll results.

Wassermann:

If you run without promising anything, without trading positions, without instilling fear in coalition partners, and achieve such a result, I have reasons to be proud

If you run, and I am very proud of that and would not change it, without promising anything to anyone, without trading positions, without instilling fear in coalition partners, and achieve such a result, I have reasons to be proud. President Majchrowski himself was a strong candidate, but he recognized that he was too weak to face me one-on-one, and accepted offers from all other opposition groups. This probably speaks worst of Civic Platform, which did not have the courage to put forward its own candidate to run against me. Then we could have compared ourselves. I believe that this election result, in light of this, is very good, and I thank the residents of Krakow very much” - said Małgorzata Wassermann from PiS.

Wassermann on Tusk's Appearance at Hearing: Nothing Can Be Agreed Upon with Tusk or His Representative

I hope that [Tusk's] hearing will proceed calmly. Nothing can be agreed upon with Donald Tusk or his representative. It is all the more regrettable because Roman Giertych was himself a member of the investigative committee and knows that the secretariat calls every time and asks the witness if they will come on a given date. Do you remember Tomasz Arabski, who asked for a change of date, and the committee changed it for him. Nothing can be agreed upon with Roman Giertych. Donald Tusk said he only wants contact through him” - said the chairperson of the Amber Gold investigative committee, Małgorzata Wassermann.

Gowin:

City Election Results Should Give Us Food for Thought and Prompt Policy Adjustments

- As expected, our candidates will not achieve success in large cities and likely in the vast majority of medium-sized cities. This does not negate our spectacular victory in the regional assembly elections - stated Jarosław Gowin in an interview with wPolityce.pl.

- Certainly, the results in the cities should give us food for thought and prompt us to correct certain elements of our policy before next year's parliamentary elections - added the Deputy Prime Minister.

23:11

Bielan:

The Scale of Defeat in the Capital Clearly Showed Us That European Elections Could Be Even More Difficult for Us
- Defeats in large cities were factored into this campaign and are no surprise at all. The only thing that was surprising was the scale of the defeat in Warsaw. Very high polarization was achieved, which translated into the weakness of the other candidates - stated Adam Bielan in an interview with Kamila Baranowska in "Do Rzeczy". - Personally, I am only disappointed by the defeat in the first round. The scale of the defeat in the capital clearly showed us that European elections could be even more difficult for us - he continued.
"European elections are characterized by a huge disproportion in turnout. On a national scale, they have enjoyed record low interest for years, while at the same time it is high in large cities. In 2014, the overall turnout was 24 percent, while in Warsaw it exceeded 38 percent. The difference is therefore enormous, and in the face of reluctance towards our camp, we cannot rule out even greater mobilization of the urban electorate."
