STATE OF PLAY: Zaremba on Smolensk: Tusk, ineffective in real action, masterfully played the issue politically; Warzecha: Resentment will backfire on teachers; Thun on ACTA 2 threats; Lipiński: No enthusiasm or freshness visible in the European Commission

-- RÓŻA THUN, WHO VOTED AGAINST ACTA 2, ON JACK NIŹNIKIEWICZ'S QUESTION WHETHER THE DIRECTIVE REALLY MEANS CENSORSHIP: "It depends on how it will be implemented, and like with any directive, it will be implemented by the governments of the member states. This could lead to a situation where I see different content on the same platform when I'm in Strasbourg than when I'm in Krakow. The consequence could be privileges for some, discrimination against others, not the building of a common market. Moreover, before the Sejm adopts the appropriate regulations, we should know how content filters will function and be sure that they will not violate freedom of speech and copyright exceptions."

-- THUN ON SZYDŁO: "She certainly has an impressive collection of brooches."

-- THUN ON THE DEBATE WITH SZYDŁO: "I invite Mrs. Szydło to a debate. It can be in the media, or in her native Brzeszcze, or in my native Krakow. Or somewhere else. But she shouldn't send a substitute from further down the list, as she seems to have done so far. As the leader of the European Coalition list, I call on the leader of the United Right list from the same electoral district to a debate. And I hope she won't behave like her current government colleague, Zbigniew Ziobro, during the previous election campaign. He consistently ran away from me. In the end, I went to his meeting with voters in Nowa Huta, and there I was attacked by patriotically motivated admirers of this peace-bringing candidate, armed with flags bearing the PiS emblem on one side and the Polish eagle on the other. It was a very comical scene!" https://www.rp.pl/Polityka/304049886-Thun-Polexit-jesli-PiS-pozostanie-u-wladzy.html

-- PIOTR ZAREMBA ON EVERYONE HAVING A CONSCIENCE ACCOUNT TO SETTLE AFTER THE SMOLENSK CATASTROPHE: "Everyone has their own conscience account to prepare here, although it probably won't happen. The current opposition camp, despite everything, quite a lot. It's worth remembering that immediately after the disaster, Donald Tusk did not try to secure a legal solution that would allow Poland to be a co-host of the investigation. He also agreed to a long delay in allowing prosecutors access to the most elementary activities and evidence. Possibly due to a lack of experience, due to ignorance, but it is a fact."

-- ZAREMBA ON THE DESPICABLE RELIEF: "It is not true that he was under fire from the beginning. The first accusations, apart from internet trolls, appeared after the presidential campaign in 2010. He chose as he did – for example, ostentatiously staying on skis when the Russian MAK presented its own version, slandering the victims. A little later, he suggested in the Sejm that he would not go to war with Russia over this matter. I then called the feelings of a significant part of the Polish elite 'despicable relief,' and I stand by that opinion. Relief not because of the deaths of 96 people, but because of the limited reaction to it."

-- INEFFECTIVE IN REAL ACTION, TUSK MASTERFULLY PLAYED THE ISSUE POLITICALLY - CONTINUES ZAREMBA: "At the same time, ineffective in terms of real actions, Tusk masterfully played the issue politically. The prolonged technical investigation and prosecution inquiry always returned in a wave of leaks around political campaigns. Because contrary to the claims of the liberal mainstream, this topic was no fuel for PiS. It did integrate its hardest electorate, but it frightened everyone else. Fueling confusion around this matter served PO for a time. The victory of the right in 2015 occurred when it was relatively extinguished, even due to the passage of time."

-- CYNICISM AND DESPICABLE RELIEF CLASHED WITH THE SELFISHNESS OF THE OTHER SIDE - CONTINUES ZAREMBA: "Unfortunately, I myself am incapable, if only due to a lack of technical qualifications, of deciding anything. Here, the cynicism of some ('despicable relief') clashed with the selfishness of others. And incidentally, the opportunity was not used to formulate far-reaching conclusions regarding the state of the country. I risk the thesis that under PiS, despite a greater dose of pro-state rhetoric, it is just as tied up with a string as it was in the tragic year of 2010." https://polskatimes.pl/piotr-zaremba-czy-sprawa-katastrofy-smolenskiej-zostanie-kiedykolwiek-wyjasniona/ar/c1-14024779

-- TO NEW WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, PIS MUST RESPOND WITH NEWER ONES, NOT EVEN LEPPER WAS SO BRUTAL, THEY HAVE NEVER LIED SO MUCH BEFORE - MICHAŁ KARNOWSKI ON THE OPPOSITION: "Even Lepper in his angry years was not so brutal. Never before have they lied so terribly about what is happening in the country, proclaiming – including externally, against all facts – theses about impending fascism, about a bloody dictatorship, worse than the communist one. Never before has there been an attempt to seize power through collective, almost spasmodic hysteria, which was meant to tire and frighten Poles. Never before have we witnessed such close coordination of the domestic opposition's actions with EU structures, usurping the right of veto over government actions. This plan failed, PiS did not enter this game this time, and drew appropriate conclusions. Including the conclusion that to survive the storm, it must propose solutions that 'have never happened before.' To new (weapons of mass destruction), one can only respond with even newer, even better weapons." https://wpolityce.pl/m/polityka/441231-j-mucha-dziwi-sie-jarkowemu-a-przeciez-to-i-jej-zasluga

-- MICHAŁ SZUŁDRZYŃSKI ON THE UNTAPPED CENTER - writes in RZ: "Considering that the trend in polls shows the results of the EC and the United Right approaching each other, it might turn out that this untapped center will decide not only the outcome of the European elections but also who will govern at the end of the year. Will the one who finds the most attractive offer for this center win?" https://www.rp.pl/Komentarze/304049887-Szuldrzynski-Niezagospodarowane-centrum.html

-- JACEK NIŹNIKIEWICZ IN RZ ON SOLIDARITY AS AN OFFSHOOT: "It is a national good and a national pride that should maintain equal distance from all political groups and be closest to the trade unionists. And they are slowly raising their heads and disagreeing with the submissiveness of the teachers' 'S' to the government. Simulated protests and making the Union a party appendage of PiS will mean that Lech Wałęsa, who has been talking cosmic things lately, might be right and the 'S' emblem should be taken away from the union. It's a shame to see the politicization of the living part of our history." https://www.rp.pl/Polityka/304049878-Nizinkiewicz-Solidarnosc-z-PiS.html

-- MONIKA OLEJNIK ON PIOTR DUDA AT NOWOGRODZKA - writes in GW: "On the other hand, in February, Piotr Duda visited the leader at Nowogrodzka Street. It's unknown what they agreed on. Did they agree not to support the teachers' protest? Maybe Adam Bielan knows?" http://wyborcza.pl/7,75968,24618102,jarkowe-czyli-kielbasa-wyborcza-dla-emerytow-a-nie-dla-nauczycieli.html

-- RESENTMENT WILL BACKFIRE ON TEACHERS - ŁUKASZ WARZECHA IN WP: "Closer is the shirt than the coat – even if someone doesn't adore the current government, problems with a child's education and everyday life difficulties with caring for them will quickly become more important, and the resentment will backfire on the teachers. Of course, there will also be those who will direct all their anger against the government."

-- FUNCTIONAL ALLY OF SCHETYNA - CONTINUES WARZECHA: "When Adam Bielan accuses Sławomir Broniarz of having devised the strike plan long ago together with Grzegorz Schetyna, he might not be literally right, but he is showing an obvious mechanism: the teachers' protest is not happening by accident in an election year and it is quite obvious that it poses a huge problem for the ruling party – and thus helps the opposition. Broniarz becomes an ally of Schetyna, at least, as it is wisely said, functionally."

-- BRONIARZ FIGHTS FOR HIS POSITION IN ZNP - CONTINUES WARZECHA: "And it so happens that this year, besides the EP and Polish parliamentary elections, ZNP leadership elections are also due. It is therefore clear that Broniarz is also fighting for his position. Just as Duda was helped last year in his re-election by achieving the ban on Sunday trading, Broniarz hopes that achieving salary increases for teachers will help him." https://opinie.wp.pl/warzecha-strajk-nauczycieli-gra-na-emocjach-dopiero-przed-nami-opinia-6366979488540801a

-- ŁUKASZ LIPIŃSKI IN POLITYKA ABOUT THE EUROPEAN COALITION LACKING ENTHUSIASM AND FRESHNESS: "However, the details of the program can be elaborated on at subsequent conferences and conventions. The bigger problem is that for now, the coalition's declarations lack enthusiasm and freshness. Something that was visible, for example, during the inaugural convention of Robert Biedroń's Spring. Or during the autumn campaign of the Civic Coalition, in which Lubnauer and Barbara Nowacka managed to effectively mobilize women around the issue of their rights." https://www.polityka.pl/tygodnikpolityka/kraj/1788444,1,koalicja-europejska-stawia-na-wielki-wybor.read?src=mt

-- OVER HALF A MILLION FOR CREATORS OF ANALYTICAL ONLINE POLITICS - Anna Dąbrowska in Polityka analyzes PO's spending: "The Platform also spends quite a lot on monitoring what is said about it online. It paid the agency Apostołowie Opinii (Apostles of Opinion), operating in the area of online reputation management, PLN 481,000 last year. The Platform has been cooperating with this company for at least two years. 'Our offer includes: audits and image consulting, ongoing e-image monitoring, recommendations for protective actions, and actions related to responding to phenomena threatening reputation' – we read on the Apostles of Opinion website. The Platform paid another consulting firm linked to the Apostles PLN 371,000."

-- AND HALF A MILLION FOR KANTAR AND IBRIS - CONTINUES DĄBROWSKA: "From the expert fund, the Platform also ordered research from Kantar (ten invoices totaling PLN 233,000) and from the Institute for Market and Social Research Foundation (IBRiS) – 12 invoices for PLN 305,000. Additionally, PO spent PLN 36,000 on research commissioned from a research group in Katowice." https://www.polityka.pl/tygodnikpolityka/kraj/1788446,1,finanse-partii-na-co-w-2018-r-wydawala-platforma-obywatelska.read?src=mt

-- TOMASZ WÓJCIK ON THE HARMFULNESS OF THE EU MINIMUM WAGE POSTULATE: "Robert Biedroń's Spring has a proposal: to introduce a European minimum wage of one thousand euros. Unfortunately, this idea is not very sensible. The introduction of a uniform minimum wage in all EU countries would cause more harm than good. Common EU standards for wages, working conditions, health protection, and taxes are needed, but they must be implemented wisely." https://krytykapolityczna.pl/gospodarka/o-socjalna-europe-wojcik/
