THE STATE OF PLAY: Glapiński Doesn't Have to Resign, Zaremba: "I Wouldn't Want the Endecja's Influence to Expand," Gowin on Media Owners' Conversation at a Match

Łukasz Mężyk

-- TUESDAY AT 5 PM: PRIME MINISTER'S TWEETUP AT THE CHANCELLERY OF THE PRIME MINISTER.

-- GLAPIŃSKI DOESN'T HAVE TO RESIGN - WITOLD GADOMSKI IN GW: “Calls for Glapiński to step down can be heard today. If that were to happen, the NBP's stability, and perhaps its effectiveness, would suffer. Firstly, it would set a precedent, weakening the position of future governors. Secondly, a new governor would be appointed by President Duda and chosen by the current parliamentary majority. They would hold office until 2025. What guarantee is there that they would be more competent and independent than the current governor?” http://wyborcza.pl/magazyn/7,124059,24353554,glapinski-nie-musi-odejsc-bank-centralny-musi-byc-silny.html

-- ANDRUSZKIEWICZ IS TOO HIGH A PRICE FOR HIS SIGNIFICANCE - PIOTR ZAREMBA IN DGP: “PiS, by bringing in Andruszkiewicz (in my opinion, at too high a price for his actual significance), is guided by immediate political interest. They want to weaken the competition from the right, which is particularly dangerous if the European Parliament elections (May 26) were to proceed according to the normal calendar before the parliamentary ones. It is increasingly likely that PiS will first make us vote, prematurely, for parliament.”

-- WHO WILL CONVINCE WHOM AND WHO WILL OUTSMART WHOM - ZAREMBA ON THE ALLIANCE WITH SALVINI: “Isn't the attempt to institutionalize the alliance between Kaczyński and Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini a step too far in a similar logic? The partners are more serious, and the stakes are higher than in the case of neo-Endecja's dealings – but what of it? The current ruling coalition in Italy, which, like PiS, views many matters similarly (from refugees to European financial policy), are allies of the Kremlin in the West. Who will convince whom here? Who will outsmart whom?”

-- ANDRUSZKIEWICZ IS NOT A SERIOUS PROBLEM, BUT JAKUBIAK WOULD BE - ZAREMBA CONTINUES: “Certainly, nationalists on a common right-wing platform, especially in greater numbers (Andruszkiewicz alone is not a serious problem, but, for example, MP Jakubiak is), can change the way of thinking and the hierarchy of threats. Especially since they bring with them various, unclear, perhaps even unfulfilled interests. Andruszkiewicz, still as a Kukiz'15 MP, was suspected of holding talks about establishing a Polish-Eastern Chamber of Commerce, which was to facilitate Polish companies exporting to Russia while bypassing the embargo. What is the readiness of the nationalists to walk down this path?”

-- OR PERHAPS IT IS BETTER TO RISK A POLISH JOBBIK? - ZAREMBA FURTHER IN DGP: “Will PiS change them, or will they start changing the nature of our right-wing? Or perhaps it is better to risk the emergence of a Polish Jobbik (Viktor Orbán functions quite well within it) than to discover it through an experiment on a living organism?”

-- I WOULDN'T WANT THE ENDECJA VISION'S INFLUENCE TO EXPAND - ZAREMBA'S CONCLUSION: “Especially since there are other dangers. The Endecja vision of history and culture is, contrary to what its opponents claim, just one of the competing offers on the right-wing market. However, I would not want its sphere of influence to expand. It will certainly alienate various groups from the right, but above all, it is too narrow, too exclusive, and exclusionary a vision to fit the entire richness of Polish heritage and the entire complexity of contemporary civilizational challenges. It is better to treat it as an interesting, but ultimately closed, chapter of our history.” https://www.gazetaprawna.pl/artykuly/1391665,piotr-zaremba-o-nominacji-adama-andruszkiewicza.html

-- JAROSŁAW GOWIN TELLS PIOTR WITWICKI ABOUT THE IDEA OF HIS PARTY ATTRACTING THE MIDDLE CLASS TO THE RIGHT - in RZ: “In this year's parliamentary elections, such a program could add 3–4 percent to the electorate of the United Right, defined as the middle class: entrepreneurs, scientists, officials, startup founders, or teachers. Without the support of parts of the middle class, it will be difficult for us to achieve an independent majority. Convincing these social groups to support the United Right is the role of politicians like myself, Jadwiga Emilewicz, Adam Bielan, or Jakub Banaszek: the first mayor of a Polish city born after 1989.”

-- WE HAVE ACHIEVED A LOT WITHIN THE RIGHT-WING - GOWIN CONTINUES: “Please point to a conservative-free market party after 1989 that has achieved more. In politics, one must be a realist and focus on practical results. I believe that within the broad right-wing camp, where we are a small minority, we have achieved a lot. Since you asked me about philosophical classics, I think Aristotle would praise us.”

-- TUSK IS UNCOMMON, BUT HAS ONE GOAL – STRENGTHENING PERSONAL POWER - GOWIN FURTHER AT WITWICKI'S: “Since Donald Tusk's name has been mentioned, I consider him an uncommon politician, not just in Poland. The whole problem is that he uses his talents for one purpose: strengthening his personal power, not for what is the essence of politics, which is the sensible, evolutionary improvement of reality. It's about making it bearable, and perhaps even, optimistically, friendly to citizens.”

-- IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO BUILD ANYTHING WITH SUCH MONEY - GOWIN FURTHER ON THE TUSK ERA: “With the amount of EU funds available to the Tusk government, it was impossible not to build anything. The problem is that too few roads were built, they were too expensive, and Polish companies, instead of growing into international corporations, began to fail one after another. The Platform's period of rule was certainly not a time of Poland in ruins. It was just a time of missed opportunities for Poland. I deeply regret this regarding Donald Tusk. He was Prime Minister for seven years…”

-- GOWIN TELLS WITWICKI THE STORY OF A DISCUSSION AMONG OWNERS OF LARGE MEDIA CONGLOMERATES DURING A MATCH: “In the context of media freedom, I will tell you – as the first person – a story. When Polska Razem was founded, it had around a dozen percent in polls. At that time, one of my friends, an outstanding manager, told me about a conversation he witnessed during a football match. Next to him sat the owners of large media conglomerates, and they were discussing my party. They said that my success was a threat to their interests, as it could lead to PiS taking power, and therefore my party must be destroyed… This story had a continuation, but let's leave that aside. In any case, when I hear that before the United Right government, there was unrestricted media freedom in Poland, I shrug my shoulders.”

-- GOWIN ON HIS CONTACTS WITH SCHETYNA AND THE OPPOSITION: In this cabinet, I hosted all parliamentary party leaders.

-- Was Grzegorz Schetyna here?

-- Yes.

-- On what matter?

-- That, I will keep to myself. Besides, I also visited him in his mythical lair. I believe that rational politics should be based not only on dispute but also on seeking common ground.” https://www.rp.pl/Rozmowy-Witwickiego/301119979-Jaroslaw-Gowin-Obywatele-nie-chca-rewolucji.html

-- ROBERT MAZUREK: MORAWIECKI HAS THE ABILITY TO CAPTIVATE CROWDS LIKE THE PKP CASHIER IN MAŁKINIA: “It would be impolite to suspect that if Kaczyński wins, something in the essence of his government will change. Because why would it? It worked, we won? So there will be even more of the same. Even more technocratic Morawiecki, who has the ability to captivate crowds like a PKP cashier in Małkinia, so he tries to spice it up with a very folksy sauce. There will be even more enthusiastic activists nervously looking around for what to privatize, because these are the last four years. Finally, there will be even more rhetoric about defending our interests and not giving an inch. And along with that, considerable social spending, impressive statistics, and Baltic+ for everyone. It will be as it is.” https://www.rp.pl/Mazurek-na-wynos/301119999-Mamusia-nie-jedzie-do-Ciechocinka.html&template=restricted

-- MAGDALENA ŚRODA ON THE BLONDE DIRECTOR AND THE FACT THAT WOMEN IN PiS HAVE NO POWER - she writes in GW: “This is not unusual, by the way: the world of PiS is essentially the world of Glapińskis. In the party's authorities, as well as in its companies and institutions, there is not a single woman who holds real power. Despite a large number of 'ferns' and 'fighters,' this party, apart from the ascetic aspect of the leader, is thoroughly nineteenth-century, patriarchal, and sexist. And it benefits from this to the fullest.” http://wyborcza.pl/7,75968,24353554,podpowiadamy-glapinskiemu-blondynka-dyrektorka-to-nie-musi.html

-- KRZYSZTOF LESKI IN CONVERSATION WITH AGNIESZKA KUBLIK IN GW ON KURSKI AS URBAN: “The number of epithets in 'Wiadomości' is unprecedented, but the tone in which they are presented is key – full of professional verve, as if they were facts or hot news. Jacek Kurski has returned to Urban's venomous propaganda language 100 percent, though he also draws from Maciej Szczepański, the famous TV president from the 70s, who modernized it and practiced propaganda of success with a global flair.”

-- LESKI ON ZIEMIEC: “Just a year ago, the broadcasts hosted by Ziemiec were milder than those of Holecka and Adamczyk. For example, Ziemiec, while interviewing a guest on 'Wiadomości,' was gentler, trying to appear relatively impartial. But since spring, I see no difference.” http://wyborcza.pl/magazyn/7,124059,24353223,kto-jest-najgorszy-w-tvp-nie-wiem-za-duza-konkurencja.html
