At the ImpactCEE’22 conference, Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) announced a new project within the 3W initiative: water-hydrogen-carbon, which will be implemented in cooperation with eleven leading Polish universities and the Łukasiewicz Research Network. During workshops held after the conference, representatives of the partner universities discussed the tasks facing the Interdisciplinary 3W Innovation Centre (ICI 3W).
The universities that signed the agreement to establish ICI 3W include: Poznań University of Technology, Cracow University of Technology, Warsaw University of Technology, Koszalin University of Technology, Rzeszów University of Technology, Opole University of Technology, AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, University of Zielona Góra, and the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin.
The Interdisciplinary 3W Innovation Centre faces numerous tasks. Its primary goal is to strengthen cooperation between academia and business and to create a supportive ecosystem that will streamline the commercialization process of innovative solutions in the areas of water, hydrogen, and carbon.
– “We want to develop projects that will enable patenting ideas, commercializing technological knowledge originating in Poland, and implementing it in Polish enterprises. We believe that the potential of Poland’s best universities and dynamic entrepreneurs willing to join this initiative will quickly demonstrate to the world that Poland can be such a 3W hub, and we will also rapidly attract investors and interested stakeholders from around the globe to join the 3W initiative,” said Maciej Przybyła, Managing Director of the Strategy and Business Support Division at BGK, during the workshop.
Workshop participants noted that many dispersed units operate in our country, sometimes unaware of each other’s existence and often competing unnecessarily. Therefore, they see the need to establish a centre in Poland that will connect numerous entities capable of forming consortia. They consider this an important factor when applying for project funding.
Strengthening Science-Business Cooperation
ICI 3W will serve as a platform to enable and enhance cooperation between the business and administration sectors and the academic and scientific communities. Through this centre, new study programs and training courses focused on water, hydrogen, and modern carbon technologies will be created. BGK sees this as an opportunity for the development of innovation and the competitiveness of the Polish economy. Workshop participants observed that fields of study related to, among others, green energy or water purification already exist, but there is a need to integrate all three 'W's.
Support for the Best Technologies
To champion the best projects, the Centre will provide expert reviews regarding their innovativeness and alignment with the 3W concept. It will also verify their Technology Readiness Level (TRL), which defines the advancement stage of technologies and allows for the comparison of work progress. ICI 3W will also offer legal consultations to interested entities, support them in the patent acquisition process, and pilot projects conducted under its auspices.
Popularizing the 3W Idea
The Centre was established as a realization of the 3W initiative by Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego, therefore its role will also include disseminating its principles. ICI 3W will organize seminars, scientific workshops, and conferences to raise awareness about the 3W idea. In this way, the Centre aims to build public awareness regarding daily consumer decisions in the context of sustainable development.
