Impact’22 Guests: Carl Bildt – Former Prime Minister and Former Foreign Minister of Sweden
Carl Bildt, who served as both Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, will be a guest at Impact’22 in Poznań. He also co-chaired peace talks during the Balkan War. One of the most well-known and respected Swedish politicians in Europe will be in Poznań on May 11th and 12th. Swedish politician Carl Bildt will be a guest at the spring edition of Impact’22. Bildt served as Prime Minister of Sweden from 1991 to 1994 and as Sweden's Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2014. It was under his leadership that the government initiated major liberal economic reforms and negotiated Sweden's accession to the European Union. Bildt is an expert and authority for Europe in conducting peace negotiations. He served as the European Union's Special Envoy to the former Yugoslavia, High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, UN Special Envoy to the Balkans, and co-chairman of the Dayton Peace Conference on Bosnia. He was the first High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1995 to 1997. His many years of experience are invaluable in a situation where Europe has once again found itself facing war. He writes about Russia's aggression against Ukraine as follows: – The brutal truth is that we have now entered a prolonged phase of sharp political confrontation; war is ongoing, and it is difficult to see a prospect of peace returning as long as Vladimir Putin governs the Kremlin. Our world is changing at an unprecedented pace. We are facing challenges that go beyond the earlier problems related to the climate crisis and the pandemic. The current situation makes enormous political demands on us. However, Bildt's experience does not end with war. In 2021, he was appointed WHO Special Envoy for the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator. Additionally, Bildt chaired the Global Commission on the Internet Governance. He was a Member of Parliament from 1979 to 2000. In 2006, he returned to government as Sweden's Minister for Foreign Affairs and began to be perceived as one of the most prominent and vocal European foreign ministers within a year of taking office. He is one of the initiators of the European Union's Eastern Partnership. He is involved in numerous advisory roles, primarily related to international affairs and global digital development.
