Impact'22 Personalities: Mathias Wikström – A Swedish Leader in Engaged Business
The financial sector has a significant role to play in the fight against climate change. However, for financial institutions to make fully responsible decisions, they need the tools to understand their environmental impact. This need is addressed by the start-up Doconomy, founded and led by Mathias Wikström. He will discuss how the principles of responsible business can be applied in the banking sector with other guests at Impact’22, the upcoming edition of the event. The conference will take place on May 11 and 12 in Poznań. Creativity and Strategy Mathias Wikström is a renowned Swedish leader in sustainable business. Through his work, he aims to promote the idea of responsible economic actions and the use of technology to combat climate change. He also strives to make complex processes easier for the public to understand, enabling them to make responsible choices by creating technological tools. In his career, he has led award-winning global projects in finance, sustainability, and human rights. He earned an EMBA with honors from the Stockholm School of Economics, specializing in Innovation Leadership, and also studied at the Berlin School of Creative Leadership. Mathias Wikström has also served on several juries awarding prizes for socially engaged activities. In pursuit of his mission to disseminate climate knowledge, he speaks at industry summits in Europe, the United States, Asia, and Latin America. He has also participated in United Nations summits dedicated to climate. One of his recent projects is the fintech Doconomy, which he co-founded with Johan Pihl. How Doconomy Supports Green Finance Doconomy, founded by an Impact’22 guest, is a Swedish start-up focused on combating climate change. Its activities center on developing methods and technologies for calculating human impact on the climate and environment. The fintech company began its operations in 2018. From its inception, it has been developing an ecosystem of financial tools that can be used to educate the public and drive positive changes in business. Through collaborations with financial institutions, the company managed by Mathias Wikström is disseminating global knowledge about the impact of humanity and businesses on the climate. The start-up's goal is also to provide the global community with evidence of what can be achieved by leveraging technology, the position of the banking sector, and the latest climate knowledge. Collaboration with Mastercard One of Doconomy's most significant achievements is the creation of a carbon footprint calculator for Mastercard, a global technology company operating in the payments sector. This tool enables banks to provide customers with the data and information necessary for making environmentally friendly consumer decisions. Using the calculator, consumers can measure the carbon dioxide emissions generated by a specific purchase while shopping. These calculations are based on the independently verified methodology of the Åland Index, created by the Finnish Bank of Åland. Banks, in turn, can easily integrate the Carbon Footprint Calculator into their mobile applications using new APIs. These are available on the Mastercard Developers website. Challenges of the Present The Carbon Footprint Calculator was developed for Mastercard in response to growing public interest in environmental protection. Research commissioned by Mastercard and conducted by YouGov indicates that the creation and provision of such solutions are highly needed by contemporary consumers who wish to make ecological choices. As this is one of the most important – if not the most important – challenges of our time, the topic could not be absent from the Impact’22 conference. Mathias Wikström will participate in a moderated discussion there titled “Green Finance – Responsible Business in the Banking Sector?”
