Impact's People: Cristina Gamboa – Green Building for People and the Planet
As she admits herself, she got into promoting green building somewhat by chance. However, the passion with which she dedicates herself to the task, and the consistency she shows in fulfilling successive goals, are the best testament to Cristina Gamboa's calling for climate action. Cristina Gamboa has been involved in promoting so-called green buildings for twelve years – that is, buildings that, due to their design and construction, meet the highest environmental and energy standards. These types of sustainable, ecological residential and office facilities utilize the latest solutions in energy efficiency, low emissions, and environmentally friendly materials. As the president of the World Green Building Council, which currently comprises around 70 local committees and 36,000 members worldwide, Gamboa collaborates with government and business representatives to jointly work towards the Paris Agreement and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Gamboa divides her mission into two areas: firstly, improving the planet's environmental situation, including the fight to preserve biodiversity, and secondly, strengthening social welfare and justice in the context of climate change and energy security. Gamboa's favorite type of ecological building is green schools – as she explains, in addition to the typical benefits of sustainable construction, they also serve an important educational function. The lofty goals Gamboa sets for herself are supported by solid economic knowledge and business experience. Among other achievements, the activist's resume includes a leadership position in the Colombian construction industry association Camacol Nacional and advisory roles at the consulting firm Medley Global Advisors. Furthermore, Gamboa worked at the Andean University in Colombia's capital, Bogotá, and as a researcher at the economic and social think tank Fedesarrollo – ranked as the best organization of its kind in Central and South America according to the latest 2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report by the University of Pennsylvania. Gamboa also had the opportunity to experience the world of high politics as an assistant to the Deputy Minister of International Trade in the Colombian government, Second Secretary at the Colombian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and an economist at the World Bank in the Office of the Chief Economist for the Latin America and Caribbean Region. Her experience across all three sectors of activity – public, private, and non-governmental – helps Gamboa bridge the gap between stakeholders with often diverging views and provides insights that can easily elude long-standing specialists in their respective fields. Christina Gamboa will speak at the spring Impact conference on May 12th and 13th. What can we expect on the Impact’21 May stage? From its inception, Impact has organized events that are a phenomenon of the Polish conference market: the traditional format of long panel debates has been replaced by short, dynamic presentations. Impact has also changed its approach to the round table format, which at Impact are shorter than usual, and during which very specific topics are discussed in a small, closed group. The Impact team also focuses on popular international speakers and constantly seeks new technological inspirations.
