The Baltic States are known for their innovation in everyday technology. Estonia boasts the best e-government; Lithuania has e-grocery, i.e. online grocery shopping.
Barbora is the new e-grocery brand on the Polish market. It is owned by the Lithuanian Maxima Group, which also has the Stokrotka retail chains in its portfolio, among others. The online grocery store – Barbora – is headed by Andrius Mikalauskas, who will appear on the Impact’21 Spring Edition stage in May.
Mikalauskas joined the Barbora team in Lithuania in 2017 as Chief Financial Officer, and two years later took over as CEO of the company in Lithuania, as well as CEO of JSC Radas, the company managing Barbora's companies, including in Poland. Under Mikalauskas's leadership, the company met the increased demand for e-grocery services and expanded in the Baltic States. The exceptionally rapid growth in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia gained momentum and provided impetus for a new stage of development: entering the Polish market, which is six times larger than all the Baltic States combined in terms of potential customer numbers.
However, this is not the end of the challenges. The Polish market is expecting a rapid increase in the near future. According to PwC analyses, in 5 years the gross value of the entire Polish e-commerce market will amount to PLN 162 billion, and food products, along with health and beauty categories, are the categories with the highest projected growth rate.
The online store Barbora.pl launched in Poland in January this year. Deliveries are currently available in Warsaw and its surrounding areas. – Until now, we have mainly focused on securing a larger market share in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia – countries where we have increased our customer base and strengthened our capabilities, as well as the e-commerce market in general. Expansion into Poland is a strategic stage in the company's life, and we feel we have matured for this step – explains Mikalauskas. Barbora aims to be the first choice for online shopping – initially for residents of Warsaw and its surroundings, and in the longer term, in other Polish cities as well. – We have achieved this successfully in the Baltic States, and I believe our business model will also pay off in Poland, where an increasing number of residents are discovering and appreciating the high quality of service and the best shopping experience – says the CEO of Barbora Polska.
Mikalauskas added that the expansion into Poland is seen not only as a business development prospect but also as a new opportunity for customers from Lithuania and other markets where it operates. – As the largest online store offering food products in the Baltic States, we will leverage our experience in the Polish market. In turn, the experiences we gain in Poland will help us further improve services and shopping experiences for existing customers and introduce new services – concluded the CEO of Barbora.
