The Law and Justice (PiS) parliamentary club has put forward Robert Jastrzębski as a candidate for the position of a judge at the Constitutional Tribunal. This nomination is a necessity following the death of Judge Grzegorz Jędrejek in January. Jastrzębski was previously nominated by PiS for the Constitutional Tribunal in November of last year, but his candidacy was withdrawn after a few days.

The parliamentary Culture and Media Committee has rejected the government's proposal to allocate PLN 2 billion to Polish Television (TVP). The vote, which took place on Tuesday, saw the opposition secure a majority, with 14 committee members voting against the allocation and 10 in favour. This decision represents a significant setback for the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, which had championed the funding boost for the public broadcaster.

The proposal, presented by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, aimed to provide substantial financial support to TVP, which has faced criticism regarding its journalistic standards and perceived political bias. Supporters of the funding argued that it was necessary to ensure the continued operation and development of the public broadcaster, enabling it to produce high-quality programming and fulfil its public service mandate.

However, the opposition strongly contested the allocation, citing concerns about TVP's independence and the government's influence over its editorial policy. Critics argued that the large sum of money would further entrench political control over public media, undermining its impartiality and its role as a watchdog.

The vote in the Culture and Media Committee is a preliminary step, and the final decision will be made by the entire Sejm (the lower house of the Polish parliament). Nevertheless, the committee's rejection sends a clear signal of opposition to the proposed funding and may influence the broader parliamentary debate.

Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus, a prominent opposition politician and member of the Culture and Media Committee, expressed her satisfaction with the outcome. In a tweet, she stated, "PiS przegrało głosowanie. Stosunkiem głosów 14 do 10 sejmowa komisja kultury nie zgodziła się na przekazanie TVP 2 mld" (PiS lost the vote.
