City Mayors Discuss with Senate Authorities, Proposing a Bill on Compensation for Local Governments. Trzaskowski: The Deficit is Almost PLN 8 Billion Annually

"Local government is our great success. These are people who work together with residents, organize their lives, realize their dreams, and fulfill life's expectations. Polish local government carries out these tasks wonderfully, but in recent years it has been facing many new challenges and tasks, which are not accompanied by funding. The Polish government promises people many things, but at the cost of their lives, their money, because this is not the government's money. It is the money of residents who pay taxes," said Sejm Deputy Marshal Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska at a press conference in the Senate. "The worst predictions of the fathers of modern democracy have come true. Those in power are buying votes with their own money. It is precisely the money earned by us, in local governments, that is distributed only to specific social groups, decided upon by the rulers themselves," argued the Mayor of Łódź, Hanna Zdanowska. "The government is fulfilling its promises by lowering taxes, using the money of local governments, the money of residents of large and medium-sized cities. This deficit for local governments in Poland amounts to almost PLN 8 billion annually. Therefore, we are submitting a draft bill which is intended to compensate for the loss of revenue, to increase the share of local governments in taxes," said the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski.
