Adam Szłapka has been elected the new leader of Nowoczesna. During the party's Sunday convention in Warsaw's Bielany district, he defeated his opponent, Krzysztof Mieszkowski, by a margin of 25 votes.
In the morning, Katarzyna Lubnauer resigned from her position. Speaking to journalists, she recounted that she had made her decision on October 14th:
"I believe I was a leader for difficult times. I took over the party with plummeting poll numbers and financial obligations that hindered its functioning. I managed to guide it [the party] through three elections. I prepared a plan for myself, outlining what I intended to do depending on the election results. When we learned the results on October 14th, I made this decision."
Following his election, Adam Szłapka declared that Nowoczesna would remain faithful to its values but would redefine itself politically:
"We need to rethink our actions anew. Today we say 'Nowoczesna restart'. This is precisely the moment when we must gather all our energy and stick together. Fight for Nowoczesna, for our ideas, because Poland needs them."
In the second part of the convention, politicians are scheduled to discuss the situation ahead of the presidential elections. For now, they are not ruling out either supporting a candidate selected through an internal primary within Civic Platform, or fielding their own candidate as a rival within the Civic Coalition.
"We will definitely discuss how to select [a candidate]. It is natural that Civic Platform, as the largest partner in the Civic Coalition, has the greatest resources to propose a candidate. However, up until now, individual parties within the Civic Coalition have participated in all decisions," said leader Adam Szłapka.
Nowoczesna is planning another convention at the beginning of next year. The party leader is elected for a 4-year term.
