Monday's Political Agenda: Witek in Budapest for Speakers of Parliament Summit, Launch of #SaveTheHeroes Campaign

Sejm Marshal Elżbieta Witek is on an official visit to Hungary, where she will participate in the IX Summit of Speakers of Parliaments of Southeast European Countries. The topic of the meeting will be the expansion of the European Union. The opening of the summit is scheduled to feature an address by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Speakers of the parliaments of the Visegrád Group countries will also have their say during the meeting.

At 10:30, a press conference and the launch of the #SaveTheHeroes campaign will take place, with the participation of MEP Patryk Jaki and new MPs: Janusz Kowalski, Sebastian Kaleta, Mariusz Kałużny, and Jacek Ozdoba. As announced by the organizers, "the politicians' initiative is related to the scandalous decisions of councilors in Białystok and Żyrardów – the renaming of streets named after Major Zygmunt Szendzielarz 'Łupaszko' and August Emil Fieldorf, nom de guerre 'Nil'."

Sobolewski on Opposition's Presidential Candidate Choices: I Can Only Stand Aside and Cheer for It to Last

The candidate for the United Right, as soon as he announces his intention to run for a second term, will be supported by PiS, the United Right, the current President Andrzej Duda. As for the opposition, I hope they have enough time to register a candidate, to nominate one in accordance with the Electoral Code. All that remains for me is to stand aside and cheer for it to last” – said Krzysztof Sobolewski, the Chairman of PiS's Executive Committee and newly elected MP, on Radio Jedynka.

07:31

Sobolewski:

I believe Tusk's presidential run is not out of the question, it's probable

I believe [Donald Tusk's presidential run] is not out of the question, it's probable. There have already been theories that some saw Donald Tusk returning to Civic Platform, as its leader, but I don't see him as someone who would replace Grzegorz Schetyna in the famous cave” – said Krzysztof Sobolewski, chairman of the PiS Executive Committee and a newly elected Member of Parliament, on Radio Jedynka.

07:34

Sobolewski:

Decisions on Club Leader Ahead, But I Don't Expect Changes to Current Parliamentary Club Functioning. Terlecki Led the Club Very Well for 4 Years

“Decisions [regarding the club leader] are ahead of us, but I don't expect any changes to the current functioning of the parliamentary club. I believe that for 4 years [Ryszard Terlecki] led the parliamentary club well, very well. These were not easy 4 years, and during this time, out of several thousand votes, only 3 or 4 were lost by PiS, which means it is possible to lead a club effectively even in difficult times without stumbles” - said Krzysztof Sobolewski, the Chairman of the PiS Executive Committee and an elected MP, on Jedynka radio.

07:55

Fogiel:

We Won These Elections and It Would Be Good If We All Remembered That, Because Many People on Our Side of the Political Scene Are Behaving as if the Result Were Different
- We won these elections and it would be good if we all remembered that, because many people on our side of the political scene, I have the impression, are behaving as if the result were different - said Radosław Fogiel in an interview with Katarzyna Gójska on "Sygnały dnia" (Signals of the Day) on Radio Jedynka.

07:57

Fogiel:

We are already preparing for the upcoming presidential campaign, which will certainly not be an easy one

- We are already preparing for the upcoming presidential campaign, which will certainly not be an easy one. We can only promise blood, sweat, and tears in this campaign - said Radosław Fogiel in an interview with Katarzyna Gójska on "Sygnały dnia" on Polish Radio Channel One.

07:58

Zandberg on Presidential Elections: "The decisions we make within the left-wing bloc will aim to make the left-wing bloc as strong as possible in these elections."

- The decisions we will make, and we will make them together, within the left-wing bloc, will aim to make the left-wing bloc as strong as possible in these elections, but what those decisions will be, I simply won't answer that today – stated Adrian Zandberg in an interview with Konrad Piasecki on TVN24's "Rozmowa Piaseckiego," when asked if he sees himself in the role of a presidential candidate.

- Adrian Zandberg is thinking about the left in Poland regaining its natural role on the political scene, which is to be one of the two main parties, formations that function on the Polish political stage. What helps us is, of course, diversity, and this diversity of the left is, in my opinion, its strength, because thanks to it, the left can appeal to different voters – he continued.

08:03

Fogiel on WKK's Presidential Candidacy: 'I Understand It Was About Jumping on the Bandwagon Before It Left and Nobody Would Count on the PSL Anymore'

- On the opposition's side, there is indeed perhaps some slight confusion regarding the presidential elections and their format. I also understand the quick, perhaps even slightly too quick, announcement of the candidacy of Chairman Kosiniak-Kamysz. I understand it was about jumping on that bandwagon before it left and nobody would count on the PSL anymore – said Radosław Fogiel in an interview with Katarzyna Gójska on "Sygnały dnia" on Polish Radio Channel One.

- We have Donald Tusk, who has decided to be perhaps the eternal waverer of Polish politics, because he has been behaving that way all along – Fogiel added.

08:10

Zandberg:

National Authorities Meeting on Tuesday. We are talking with Spring and SLD partners about organizing parliamentary cooperation.

Both of these solutions [Razem joining the Lewica club or forming a parliamentary circle] have their pros and cons. We have meetings of our national authorities on Tuesday, which will decide on this matter. At this moment, we are still talking with our partners, allies, and with the Spring and SLD communities about how we can organize our cooperation in parliament – stated Adrian Zandberg in an interview with Konrad Piasecki on TVN24's "Rozmowa Piaseckiego".

08:23

Zandberg:

As Far As I Know, Wiosna Actually Plans to Merge with SLD
As far as I know, Wiosna actually has plans to merge with the Alliance [SLD]. But we are different – stated Adrian Zandberg in an interview with Konrad Piasecki on TVN24's "Piasecki's Conversation". What we have shown in politics is that it is possible to be diverse, and it doesn't mean someone has to devour someone else. You can have differences; we differ on many issues. We've shown that cooperation can happen differently, by building a subjective coalition. I think this is something new in Polish politics, which has become accustomed to a model of politics in the style of Jarosław Kaczyński or also Grzegorz Schetyna. I would like politics where there is room for subjective cooperation and discussions about specific matters, not just a game of "who will get whom" – he added.

Sasin on the Creation of a Treasury Ministry Equivalent: Everything Points to the Ministry Being Established

- Everything points to the ministry being established. Perhaps not with the name you mentioned, already known in our country's history, and with slightly different tasks - said Jacek Sasin in an interview with Marcin Wikło on TVP1's "Political Quarter Hour".

08:41

Sasin on the Sunday Trading Ban: Minister Emilewicz's Report Clearly Showed That the Negative Consequences We Heard So Much About Are a Myth

- Minister Emilewicz presented a report summarizing the effects of introducing this ban [on Sunday trading], and from this report, it was very clear that the negative consequences we heard so much about are not a fact, they are a myth - said Jacek Sasin in an interview with Marcin Wikło on TVP1's "Political Quarter of an Hour".

08:44

Sasin:

I Don't Believe a Single Opposition Candidate Will Emerge

- I don't believe a single candidate for the entire opposition will emerge. I think it's completely impossible - Jacek Sasin said in an interview with Marcin Wikło on TVP1's "Political Quarter Hour".

- I would like it not to happen, for Andrzej Duda to win these elections in the first round, but there will probably be a second round, and then there will be some opposition candidate - Sasin added.

08:48

Sasin:

I Don't Understand These Actions. What's Wrong with 'Łupaszka' or General 'Nil'? It's a Disgrace to Those Who Voted for Street Name Changes
I don't understand these actions. What's wrong with 'Łupaszka' or General 'Nil'? They are heroes, our national heroes. People who took up the fight not only during the German occupation but also in a hopeless situation during communist times. People we should be proud of because they were the conscience of our nation in difficult times. It's a disgrace to those who voted for street name changes - said Jacek Sasin in an interview with Marcin Wikło on TVP1's "Political Quarter of an Hour".

09:38

Nowacka:

We're Facing a Plethora of Candidates in the First Round of Presidential Elections

"We are facing a plethora of candidates in the first round. Yesterday, one candidate announced that they might be a candidate for candidate. The campaign is already starting. Talks are underway within the Coalition. Why should we rush? A presidential campaign is primarily conducted wisely, with a good program and a good candidate," stated Barbara Nowacka, head of Inicjatywa Polska, in an interview with Piotr Witwicki on Polsat News.

09:38

Nowacka:

The issue today isn't whether we announce our candidate on November 8th, 20th, or December 20th. We know we must announce it by early next year at the latest.

From the Civic Coalition's side, the most serious candidates are Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, and the topic of Donald Tusk is also emerging. Rafał Trzaskowski also appears among those mentioned as potential individuals. These are well-known people with high recognition. The issue today isn't whether we announce our candidate on November 8th, 20th, or December 20th. We know we must announce it by early next year at the latest. This kind of speculation about who it will be serves to demonstrate the chaos within the opposition” - stated Barbara Nowacka, head of Inicjatywa Polska, in a conversation with Piotr Witwicki on Polsat News.

09:39

Nowacka:

I'm moderately waiting for Tusk. I believe he should cut short this game of stoking tensions

I believe that the person who will win against Andrzej Duda will be someone very different from him, that is, open, liberal, and unifying. For me, that person today is Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska. There are plenty of these princes on white horses. There are many willing candidates, but waiting to see if, for example, Donald Tusk appears… I'm moderately waiting for Donald Tusk. I believe he should cut short this game of stoking tensions, because we know how it ends” - said Barbara Nowacka, the head of Inicjatywa Polska, in an interview with Piotr Witwicki on Polsat News.

Government Communications Unit Expands Its Agenda. Changes at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. New Deputy Director at CIR

As of today, a new deputy director has joined the Government Information Centre (CIR) at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister (KPRM). Oliwia Skóra will be responsible for the promotion and management of the Prime Minister's Chancellery social media channels.

- This is the first change at CIR following the parliamentary elections. The unit responsible for government communications is expanding its agenda, which is why it was decided to hire someone strictly responsible for promotion - a source tells 300POLITYKA. As our interlocutors emphasize, the current management of CIR - led by Tomasz Matynia - will continue their work.

Since 2018, she has collaborated with the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, where until now she managed the work of the Internet Communication Department within the Government Information Centre. She was responsible for building the government's online information and communication strategy, social media communication, and implementing informational, social, and promotional projects at KPRM. Among other things, she prepared and implemented the promotion strategy for the "New Five" program, announced in early 2019 by Law and Justice. During her tenure at CIR, significant changes occurred in the KPRM's social media presence.

Oliwia Skóra is a graduate of Public Relations and Media Marketing, and Journalism from the University of Warsaw. Previously, she worked at the Ministry of Health, where she was responsible for preparing media strategy projects and conducting information campaigns promoting health policy, with a particular focus on the National Cancer Control Programme. Before that, she was associated with the Parliament of Polish Students, where she managed the Press Office and was responsible for the communication of the official representation of all students in Poland.

Grabiec on Presidential Elections: We are considering organizing primaries or nominating a candidate through other means. In any case, it will happen within the next few weeks.
This is the PSL's decision. We respect it, we accept it with understanding. It is natural that the PSL wants to field its own candidate. We also accept with understanding and curiosity the declaration of the PSL leader, who says that after this pre-campaign phase, a few weeks of efforts to gain support and voter votes, he is ready to withdraw from running for president if it turns out that another opposition candidate has support. We are considering the option of organizing primaries or nominating a candidate through other means. In any case, it will happen within the next few weeks, and then we will compare how the polls look, the level of support for the opposition parties' candidates. If the PSL truly wanted to withdraw its candidate from the presidential race, it would be very interesting and would indicate a willingness to support the candidate with the greatest chances. This is an interesting proposal - stated Jan Grabiec at a press conference in the Sejm. - Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz is the leader of the PSL. Civic Coalition has not yet nominated its candidate. When this candidate is nominated, when we measure that support in the polls, we will see how it looks. I know what the results of presidential elections have looked like regarding PSL candidates in the last few terms. On the other hand, I understand that every party functioning on the political scene, especially a parliamentary one, wants to have its own candidate in the presidential elections - added the PO politician.

Terlecki on PiS Candidates for the Constitutional Tribunal: Highly Competent Individuals with Vast Experience, Deserving of Justice Reform

- The candidacies are, of course, for highly competent individuals with vast experience, deserving of the justice reform. We see with some surprise that the opposition did not nominate candidates, but I understand they don't have suitable people for these positions - stated Ryszard Terlecki at a briefing in the Sejm, confirming the nominations of Stanisław Piotrowicz, Krystyna Pawłowicz, and Elżbieta Chojna-Duch for the positions of Constitutional Tribunal judges.

Jaki Launches Signature Collection for Resolutions Reinstating "Nil" and "Łupaszka" as Street Patrons

Warsaw, Poland – November 4, 2019 – Patryk Jaki, a prominent Polish politician, has announced the commencement of a signature collection drive. The initiative aims to gather support for resolutions that would re-designate two streets in Warsaw, restoring them to honor "Nil" and "Łupaszka." This move signifies a push to reinstate figures of historical importance, particularly those associated with Polish national struggles and military history.

The specific streets in question are likely those previously named after individuals or events deemed controversial by certain political factions, prompting the initial renaming. Jaki's campaign seeks to reverse these decisions and bring back the original patrons, symbolizing a reclamation of historical narratives that resonate with a significant portion of the Polish population.

"Nil" refers to Lieutenant Colonel Henryk Dobrzański, a Polish military officer who led one of the first partisan units in occupied Poland during World War II. He is revered by many as a national hero for his unwavering resistance against Nazi Germany. "Łupaszka" likely refers to Captain Zygmunt Szendzielarz, another Polish soldier and commander of the 5th Vilna Brigade of the Home Army, known for his fight against both Nazi and Soviet occupation. Both figures are considered by many Poles to be symbols of courage and patriotism.

The call for signatures underscores a broader political debate in Poland concerning historical memory and the commemoration of national heroes. The renaming of streets and public spaces is often a focal point in these discussions, reflecting differing interpretations of Poland's past and its wartime experiences.

Jaki's initiative, widely shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) via a link to his official account (https://twitter.com/PatrykJaki/status/1191309924556513280), is expected to mobilize supporters who believe in preserving and honoring these particular historical figures. The success of the signature collection will be a key indicator of public sentiment regarding the proposed reinstatements and the ongoing discourse surrounding Poland's historical legacy.

Terlecki on Piotrowicz's Candidacy: Regarding Past Matters, They Have Been Thoroughly Explained. So We See No Obstacles.

- Stanisław Piotrowicz has been associated with our milieu for years, chairman of the justice committee, he performed excellently in that role. Regarding past matters, they have been thoroughly explained. So we see no obstacles here - stated Ryszard Terlecki at a briefing in the Sejm.

- There is no mockery here. On the contrary. We take these candidacies and the functioning of the Constitutional Tribunal very seriously - added the head of the PiS club. - This is not politicization. Judges with some experience, including political experience, have always ended up there, so this is nothing new - he emphasized.

12:52

Terlecki:

We are not politicizing the Constitutional Tribunal. We are appointing individuals with appropriate competences and experience

- We are not politicizing [the Constitutional Tribunal]. We are appointing individuals with appropriate competences, appropriate experience - stated Ryszard Terlecki at a briefing in the Sejm.

Gasiuk-Pihowicz on PiS Candidates for the Constitutional Tribunal: 'When We Think PiS Has Dragged the Court to the Bottom, It Quickly Turns Out It Can Get Even Worse'

When we think that PiS has dragged the Constitutional Tribunal to the bottom, it quickly turns out that it can get even worse. This is a mockery and derision of this institution, a mockery and derision of the rights of all citizens of the Republic of Poland, whose rights are guaranteed by the Constitution. This is symbolic in a way. Mr. Piotrowicz received a decoration, a medal, for serving the communist authorities during martial law. Today, Mr. Piotrowicz is to receive a position in the Constitutional Tribunal for serving PiS, for destroying the judiciary” – said Kamila Gasiuk-Pihowicz from Civic Platform-Civic Coalition (PO-KO) at a press conference in the Sejm.

The current authorities are dragging Polish democracy to the bottom” – she added.

Another level of disgrace has been reached. Nominating Prosecutor Piotrowicz is an open mockery, laughing in the face, including the PiS voters. It was the PiS voters who said that this symbol of destroying the rule of law should no longer sit in the Polish parliament, that his mission in public life has ended. Meanwhile, PiS is doing everything to nullify and reverse the voters' verdicts” – said Marcin Kierwiński from PO.

17:03

Schetyna:

By Proposing a Martial Law Prosecutor, an Ex-MP Called 'EU Rag', and a PiS Witness to the VAT Commission, Kaczyński Shows How He Wants to Humiliate the State. Chances for Democracy: A Non-PiS Senate and a Non-PiS President

Grzegorz Schetyna stated that Jarosław Kaczyński, by proposing candidates for the Constitutional Tribunal, is demonstrating his desire to humiliate the Polish state. He pointed to the nominations of a prosecutor from the martial law period, a former Member of Parliament who referred to the EU as an "EU rag," and a witness for the Law and Justice (PiS) party before the VAT committee. Schetyna believes that the chances for democracy lie in a Senate and a President who are not affiliated with PiS.

19:33

Fogiel on Constitutional Tribunal Candidates: President Kaczyński, like the entire PiS, believes these are individuals who meet the criteria to serve on the Tribunal. They possess the relevant experience.

These are candidates nominated by the PiS parliamentary club. The club's authorities decided who would be nominated, and MPs signed off. I cannot say who first put forward these names. I was not present at the club meeting where these decisions were made. First, there was a decision by the club's presidium, which was then accepted by the whole club. President Kaczyński, like the entire PiS, believes that these are individuals who meet the criteria to serve on the Constitutional Tribunal. They possess the relevant experience” – stated Radosław Fogiel, Deputy Spokesperson and elected MP for PiS, in an interview with Anita Werner on „Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24.

19:35

Sasin to Rymanowski on Pawłowicz and Piotrowicz: I Don't Know Why You Call These Candidacies Controversial. They Are Very Well-Prepared Individuals
Let's start with these controversial nominations. Professor Pawłowicz, Mr. Piotrowicz. Is this a show of strength by Jarosław Kaczyński, or rather a sign of his sense of humor? - Bogdan Rymanowski asked Jacek Sasin on the program 'Gość Wydarzeń' (Guest of Events) on Polsat News. - President Jarosław Kaczyński certainly has a great sense of humor, but in this case, it's absolutely not about a sense of humor. I don't know why you call these candidacies controversial. They are very well-prepared individuals - Sasin replied.

19:35

Gawkowski:

The Constitutional Tribunal has been incapacitated, and subsequent individuals appointed there are to receive political rewards

The Constitutional Tribunal has been incapacitated, and subsequent individuals appointed there are to receive political rewards. For Piotrowicz, this is a reward for not getting into the Sejm. It had to be compensated somehow. Money will come in handy, it will be nice. And for Ms. Pawłowicz, it is a reward for not getting into the Sejm; it will give her a position that will allow her to appear in the media” - said MP-elect Krzysztof Gawkowski of The Left in an interview with Anita Werner on TVN24's "Fakty po Faktach."

19:41

Sasin on potentially not swearing in TK judges by PAD: On what grounds would he not accept them? If they are elected correctly, I don't believe there would be grounds to take such action

- On what grounds would he not accept them? If they are elected correctly, in accordance with the constitution, in accordance with the regulations that define the procedure for electing judges of the Constitutional Tribunal, I don't believe there would be grounds to take such action - said Jacek Sasin in an interview with Bogdan Rymanowski on the program 'Gość Wydarzeń' (Guest of the Events) on Polsat News.

19:48

Sasin on Pawłowicz: These are precisely the kind of people needed in the Constitutional Tribunal who are not afraid to go against the grain

- First and foremost, an immense knowledge of legal issues [Pawłowicz will bring to the Tribunal]. Madam Professor is indeed a professor of law. An exceptionally well-prepared individual. She was also a member of the Tribunal of State and has been active in public life for many years. She presents her views uncompromisingly, and I believe these are precisely the kind of people needed in the Constitutional Tribunal, who will often not be afraid to go against the grain and present views that may not be accepted by the mainstream, political elites - Jacek Sasin said in an interview with Bogdan Rymanowski on the program 'Guest of the Events' on Polsat News.
