Kaczyński: Poland is a Free Nation and Will Remain So [FULL SPEECH]
As Jarosław Kaczyński stated during the commemorations of the 36th anniversary of the introduction of martial law:
"36 years ago, history came full circle. In 1944-1945 and in the years that followed, communism began in Poland with an occupation, an occupation that replaced the German occupation. It was milder, it must be admitted, but it was an occupation nonetheless. There were numerous victims, atrocities, people suffered all sorts of losses, from the loss of life to various material losses. Poland was changed, destroyed, ground down, as if for a second time. Later, different times came, somewhat calmer. Communism changed tactics, but in 1980, Poles also said "no" to this softened communism through "Solidarity," a great social movement, one of the two largest in world history. A movement that strived for Poland's freedom, equality, and justice. This word, justice, must be strongly emphasized. This movement was attacked 36 years ago with methods that can be described as occupying. It was a kind of internal occupation, carried out by our own forces. A new occupation of Poland. One could say that the communist mask finally fell off. It turned out that this system could only be maintained with the help of tanks on the streets of cities, firearms, police, ZOMO, many other formations, an entire powerful army fighting against society. It was a time when Poles showed – not for the first time in their history, but I hope for the last time, because there will be no need for it anymore – that they are attached to their freedom and rights. Deeply and sincerely, that it is very important to them, that they want to fight. And Poland fought, underground Solidarity, many other organizations. This fight had various phases. Just as the communists' policies or tactics had various phases. It changed, but slowly we moved towards victory. Above all, they failed to break society at that time, because certain groups, university employees, lawyers, received unprecedented privileges in 1982 for a communist country – few people remember this. However, this did not work. It did not change the unity against the occupying essence. The authorities had to retreat slowly. They retreated in a thought-out manner, with a plan. Perhaps at the very beginning, there was no plan, but then there was. And unfortunately, it was implemented. That is precisely why what your chaplain said a moment ago is true – that the constraints imposed then have not yet fully healed, that much still lies ahead of us. Both in the pursuit of truth and in the pursuit of justice. Because that justice has not been served. For those actions, for that hand raised against Poland. On December 13, 1981, Jaruzelski and his clique raised a hand against Poland. They attacked Poland, struck powerfully. With the support of their Moscow allies and protectors. Today, we must always remember this. Even though so many years have passed, even though so many people from that time are no longer in this world. Truth must shape the consciousness of our nation, our youth. Because today, the situation with this truth in Poland is often not good. Many people, otherwise honest, still believe that Jaruzelski saved Poland from Russian intervention. Many believe that perhaps something bad happened, but not that bad. These people today pretend to be defenders of democracy. Let me remind you of Colonel Mazguła. Shame, because what is happening in our country, this attack on Polish freedom, Polish sovereignty, our right to shape our public and social life, this attack conducted from within Poland, supported from outside, is a disgrace. A disgrace to those who do it in Poland and to those who support it from outside. May this day, December 13th, always be a date that reminds us that Poles will defend their freedom. They will defend it when there are tanks on the streets, but they will also defend it when the methods of limiting or depriving us of freedom and sovereignty are more subtle. That Poland is a free country of free Poles. It is a free nation and it will remain a free nation"
