-- TWO SCENARIOS FOR NOWOCZESNA - Justyna Dobrosz-Oracz and Michał Wilgocki in GW: "There is a conviction within Nowoczesna that a decision on the form of participation in the European elections must be made as soon as possible. The party's base is increasingly impatient with protracted negotiations and the lack of a final decision. As 'Wyborcza' unofficially learns, the board and regional leaders of Nowoczesna have passed a resolution obliging Katarzyna Lubnauer to reach an agreement – together with the Polish People's Party (PSL) – on building the broadest possible coalition for the European and Sejm elections."

-- GW ON CONCERNS WITHIN NOWOCZESNA: "A separate agreement between PSL and Civic Platform (PO) would not be in Nowoczesna's interest. It would mean that a small coalition would not come to fruition, as it would only include two groupings: Lubnauer's party and UED. And this would mean either political non-existence or the necessity of capitulating to Schetyna and joining the Coalition on his terms. The Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) is also in play, but in their case, the matter is simpler. Talks are very advanced, and on February 16th, a convention will be held where delegates will decide whether SLD will join the European Coalition or run independently."

-- NO MORE SPOTS AT BIEDROŃ'S LOCAL CONVENTIONS - Magdalena Kursa in Krakow's GW: "There are no more seats available at Robert Biedroń's party's local conventions in Poland's largest cities. In Krakow, nearly a thousand tickets were gone in one day. – I'm still getting calls asking if it would be possible to squeeze a few more people into our meeting at the Nowohuckie Centrum Kultury. Unfortunately, that's no longer possible. But we will definitely stream it online. We also considered setting up an outdoor screen, but the weather isn't favorable – reveals Lilija Twardosz, the coordinator for Wiosna in the Krakow district. All spots have also been reserved at conventions in Poznań, Wrocław, Białystok, and Katowice, among others."

-- POLES SHOULD LIVE AT THE LEVEL OF WESTERN EUROPE - PAWEŁ SZEFERNAKER IN CONVERSATION WITH TOMASZ ŻÓŁCIAK IN DGP: "So far, the only party that has proposed a bold program of change and implemented it is Law and Justice (PiS). Therefore, we will present an ambitious but realistically achievable program. Today, we do not need ideological wars. Poles should live at the level of Western Europeans, and we will come forward with such an offer."

-- POLES WON'T COOK SOUP FOR DINNER FROM IDEOLOGICAL WARS - CONTINUED SZEFERNAKER IN DGP: "Dispute is the essence of democracy. Everything depends on whether politicians draw conclusions from the situations that have occurred. I have the impression that not everyone has done so, but I am proud that my political environment was able to behave as one should in such a situation. And those who could not behave properly will, in my opinion, also face political costs as a consequence. Poles won't cook soup for dinner from ideological wars. I believe that specific program proposals and consistency in their implementation will be decisive in the campaign."

-- I'VE NEVER SEEN PIS SYMPATHIZERS URINATING ON CANDLES - CONTINUED SZEFERNAKER IN DGP: "In politics, there are always people who punch below the belt. I have never defended such behavior, even from my party colleagues. But I do not agree with symmetry, where the actions we saw on Krakowskie Przedmieście after the Smolensk catastrophe or near the Sejm in 2016 can be compared with any others. I have never seen PiS sympathizers urinating on candles, arranging a cross out of beer cans, or throwing themselves under the cars of Civic Platform leaders."

-- THE TAPES WON'T MATTER, THE ISSUE IS MISFIRED - SZEFERNAKER TELLS ŻÓŁCIAK: "These tapes will not have much significance in either of the upcoming campaigns. With the PO tapes, we wondered what the state was like, when the then Minister of Interior himself spoke about how defenseless the state was. Today, public opinion wonders whether it was the party leader who said the famous words 'I can't,' and one portal even did an in-depth analysis of this thread. This shows how misfired this issue is."

-- EWA SIEDLECKA ON A CASTE STATE - writes in Polityka: "A state of law differs from so-called third-world countries in that in the former, everyone is certain how they will be treated by the state. They have the right to equal treatment by public authorities, and if it happens that they are not treated equally – they can, on equal terms, enforce equal treatment. State institutions should be blind to social origin or party affiliation. But at the beginning of the PiS government, party leader Kaczyński announced that there are citizens of a better and worse sort in Poland. After more than three years, it is evident that the PiS state adheres to this standard. On the 'Wyborcza' tapes, party leader Kaczyński called it an Asian standard."

-- ANNA SŁOJEWSKA IN RZ ON EXPECTED STANDARDS FROM TUSK AS EU COUNCIL PRESIDENT - AFTER HIS STATEMENTS ABOUT HELL: "Of course, a harsher language is used in Poland, and Tusk navigates it well. However, in the European debate, especially from a politician in the position that the former Polish Prime Minister currently holds, different standards are expected. Not to mention that in secular Western Europe, religious metaphors are rarely used. One can only hope that Tusk's games with the devil will not impress the rather thick-skinned British politicians accustomed to sharp debates."

-- PAWEŁ WROŃSKI ON THE POLISH NATIONAL FURNITURE - writes in GW: "The Round Table is the most important Polish piece of furniture and political idea. In 1989, it was such a powerful symbol that the opposition in East Germany considered it the best formula for dialogue about cooperation and peaceful change. In 2011, a round table of the opposition and part of the government in Tunisia led to an agreement between feuding parties and calmed the situation in the country after the Jasmine Revolution. Previously, delegations from Tunisia had viewed the 'furniture' in the Presidential Palace. Juan Guaidó, considered the interim president of Venezuela, proposed the Polish Round Table formula as a peaceful way to resolve the dispute between the government and its opponents."

-- ADAM LESZCZYŃSKI ON THE ROUND TABLE IN OKO: "Why did the communists and the opposition sit down for talks at all? In short: because both sides were weak. The party decided to allow 'Solidarity' to participate in power, but wanted it to happen on its terms. 'Solidarity' was not seeking power. Both sides were drawn into the logic of negotiation, not the perfidy of a secretly concluded pact."
