-- JAKUB MAJMUREK ON MACIEREWICZ FINISHING OFF ANOTHER GOVERNMENT: “Congratulations to Minister Macierewicz, if he finishes off another government harming Poland with his assistant, just as he finished off others with a briefcase, I will bow deeply to him, in the Polish way, cap to the ground, every time I see him on the street.” https://www.facebook.com/100001052263034/posts/2313548525356867/

-- TOMASZ LIS IN A SIMILAR VEIN: https://twitter.com/lis_tomasz/status/1089791679836667904 -- PIOTR ADAMOWICZ IN CONVERSATION WITH ANDRZEJ STANKIEWICZ ABOUT SAVING HIS BROTHER: “He was beyond saving. Absolutely. There was a council of doctors, which I attended, and then a meeting with the Minister of Health. I thanked the doctors and said what I will repeat now: I know they did everything possible and saved Paweł to the best of their medical knowledge.”

-- "I CAN SAY THAT MORAWIECKI'S PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE ACTIONS ARE FULL PROFESSIONALISM" - PRESIDENT ADAMOWICZ'S BROTHER CONTINUES WITH STANKIEWICZ: “Shortly after Paweł's death, a lady contacted me at the hospital and asked if I could speak with Prime Minister Morawiecki. We spoke on Tuesday. He offered his condolences, and I thanked him for the Prime Minister's Office arranging transport for Paweł's wife and daughters. This was very important, as without it, she would have had to wait 6 hours in London for a flight to Gdańsk. And Paweł didn't have time. The Prime Minister explored the possibility of organizing a state funeral. The family's answer was decisive - no. Even then, on Tuesday, January 15th, we decided that the city, in agreement with the family, would organize the funeral. I asked the Prime Minister for the funeral to be dignified, but modest. No honor guard, a modest military escort. There were several such conversations afterward, but what we agreed on initially was kept. During my work as a journalist, I had contact with the offices of all presidents and most prime ministers. I can say that the actions of Morawiecki's Prime Minister's Office were full professionalism.”

-- ADAMOWICZ ASKED ABOUT THE CONTEXT OF THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE: “Due to the political undertones, certain things had to be agreed upon. And with the Prime Minister's Office, it was agreed. As for the President's Office - I don't want to comment. I'll give an example of how professional institutions work in such situations. After Paweł's death, a clergyman from the Vatican called me. He asked if I would like to receive condolences on behalf of Francis from the papal almoner, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski. I thanked him, but asked Krajewski to contact Paweł's parents and wife. The Church knows that in such a dramatic situation, an intermediary must be found to ascertain the situation and sentiments around the deceased.”

-- ADAMOWICZ ON HIS LATE BROTHER'S FATHER ACCEPTING CONDOLENCES FROM THE PRIME MINISTER: “In such a situation, the family's will is most important, what my brother would have wished for - but we didn't know. However, my brother was a statesman, so the role of state institutions had to be taken into account in some way. We argue with each other, but this government - for now - comes from democratic elections. My father - and he is not a PiS sympathizer - decided to accept the Prime Minister's condolences after all. I arranged a brief meeting for them after the funeral ceremony. I didn't want ostentation, as people gathered in the church might react allergically.”

-- ADAMOWICZ ON HIS LATE BROTHER'S RELATIONSHIP WITH ARCHBISHOP GŁODŹ: “I know for sure that the archbishop was truly very, very moved by Paweł's death, he took this death very hard. Paweł was not an enthusiast of the current in the Church and in politics represented by the archbishop. They argued often, but they grew fond of each other. When the archbishop fell seriously ill and was being treated in Warsaw, Paweł was perhaps the only official from Gdańsk who visited him - it was an important gesture. When the archbishop's brother died, Paweł was one of the first to call with condolences. At some point, they started using the informal 'ty' (you), which the archbishop suggested. I'll say this: I don't think Abp Głódź voted for the PiS candidate in the last local elections.” https://wiadomosci.onet.pl/tylko-w-onecie/piotr-adamowicz-o-smierci-swojego-brata-pawla-adamowicza/dt5rdb3

-- TOMASZ SAWCZUK IN KULTURA LIBERALNA ON RECONCILIATION - "IT'S BENEFICIAL FOR PIS TO PLAY THE ROLE OF A DISPUTE-SOOTHING PARTY": “Secondly, it is difficult to interpret Prime Minister Morawiecki's announcement of legal changes in any other way than as a smokescreen intended to divert attention from the conflict-ridden nature of PiS rule. For the past three years, the ruling party has thrived on radicalizing political conflict, and for now, no concrete decisions indicate that this is about to change. In an election year, it is beneficial for PiS to play the role of a dispute-soothing party. Joint work on legal changes after President Adamowicz's death is painless for the ruling party and requires no concessions on any significant issue.”

-- SAWCZUK ON THE CONDITION BEING THE DEPARTURE OF KURSKI: “Even PiS supporters notice what is happening. By feeding people crude propaganda and ethical nihilism, PiS treats the opposition as traitors and enemies, and its voters as depraved idiots. And yet, during the meeting with the opposition, the Prime Minister defended TVP, and Sejm Marshal Ryszard Terlecki is even said to have stated that public television perfectly describes reality. If anyone were to take Prime Minister Morawiecki's words about the need to ease political disputes seriously, then Jacek Kurski must be removed from his position as head of public television. If this does not happen, it will mean that Prime Minister Morawiecki's words are empty promises, and PiS does not want to take even the first step towards civilizing the political situation.” https://kulturaliberalna.pl/2019/01/28/jacek-kurski-musi-odejsc-komentarz-sawczuk/

-- FLIS ON THE SUCCESS OF PI'S MODERATE LINE: “It seems to be the result of a calm reaction, extending a hand to the opposition, appeals to de-escalate disputes. These declarations have resulted in no loss at the moment. The question is how long this moderate message can be maintained. Because President Jarosław Kaczyński's last speech was not gentle. So, it is evident that actions are being taken, but it is not coming easily.” https://dorzeczy.pl/kraj/91500/prof-jaroslaw-flis-gdanska-tragedia-nie-odwrocila-sondazy.html

-- MICHAŁ KARNOWSKI ON ANY PRETEXT TO ATTACK TVP: “It is not surprising that in the first days after the tragedy, on any pretext, an offensive was launched aimed at eliminating public television in its current form. A strong opinion-forming center resisting the salon is a considerable obstacle to creating a psychosis of fear and hatred towards the ruling camp.”

-- KARNOWSKI AGAIN ON THE LINE OF POLSKIE RADIO: “Incidentally, the authors were clearly encouraged by the silent correction of the editorial line of Polskie Radio that just took place. The upcoming events should be viewed through the lens of this project to create a false breakthrough. Concerts, appeals, the fight against 'hate speech' (exclusively on the right), and constant provocations – this will be the social landscape of the coming weeks. In the face of this challenge, one should remain calm.”

-- KARNOWSKI ON THE FACT THAT THE RIGHT'S ELECTORAL TRIUMPH WAS NOT ROOTED IN THE SMOLENSK TRAGEDY: “Perhaps, unfortunately, the truth is that the direct consequence of Smolensk was defeat in the 2011 elections. The triumph achieved four years later had different causes: a socially resonant and credible program, the discrediting of the PO-PSL team, and the clear leadership of Jarosław Kaczyński. The camp of change still possesses these advantages.” https://wpolityce.pl/m/polityka/431341-wymyslili-sobie-ze-zrobia-z-tej-tragedii-maly-smolensk

-- THERE WERE PROMISES OF CHANGE AND APPEALS FOR UNITY, BUT THERE WAS NO UNITY - Agata Kondzińska and Rafał Wójcik in GW.

-- ZUZANNA DĄBROWSKA ON THE FACT THAT IN PO'S NEW GUISE, THE ABORTION ISSUE IS NON-EXISTENT - she writes in RZ: “Schetyna's guise is elegant and quite flexible, so it doesn't pinch. Especially since one would look in vain for rigid edges within it. The women's program has been tailored so that issues like abortion do not cause sleepless nights for the electorate. No words on this matter are uttered in the adopted 'January declaration.' Perhaps it would be too big a leap for the party, through which the civic project of liberalizing the law, the 'Save Women' committee (and Barbara Nowacka), did not even proceed to further committee work. Robert Biedroń's circle is aware of this.” https://www.rp.pl/Analizy/190129431-Dabrowska-Nowe-szaty-Grzegorza-Schetyny.html&template=restricted

-- HOW PI'S NOMINEES ARE PROTECTED IN KGHM - Jacek Harłukowicz on the front page of GW: “The godson of PiS Deputy Chairman Adam Lipiński was appointed director in a KGHM branch as part of the 'good change.' When he was caught rigging tenders worth PLN 3.2 million, the prosecutor's office was not informed. Instead, the person who reported the abuse was fired. (...) – I never insisted on his employment at KGHM – says Adam Lipiński. And does he know about the proceedings against Kos? – I never intervene in such matters. If someone breaks the law, they should be punished. Which, I hope, is not happening in Karol's case – he replies.” http://wroclaw.wyborcza.pl/wroclaw/7,35771,24405708,afera-w-kghm-chrzesniak-wiceprezesa-pis-ustawial-przetargi.html

-- JACEK ŻAKOWSKI ON HOW POLITICIANS' CATCHPHRASES REPLACE DEBATE: “Catchphrases are always a substitute. A flat tax instead of a discussion about the division of tax burdens. Single-member constituencies instead of ensuring the quality of politics. A cheap state instead of an efficient administration. The energy wasted on catchphrases could light up the world without emissions for a decade. Most of us have grasped this. But when old catchphrases die, new ones appear. In the upcoming election season, two are already attacking: 'hate speech' and 'deglomeration.' 'Hate speech' as enemy No. 1 works no worse than gender and functions similarly. Talking about speech replaces talking about its causes, and focusing on combating speech absolves one from limiting its sources. Nothing good has ever come of this.”

-- ŻAKOWSKI ON THE FESTIVAL OF CATCHPHRASES: “This is just the beginning. Be especially careful in February when the great nationwide festival of catchphrases begins, as every party will want to outdo others with theirs to seduce you. Be vigilant!” http://wyborcza.pl/7,75968,24405582,zaczyna-sie-wielki-ogolnopolski-festiwal-politycznych-szlagwortow.html
