POLITICAL ARENA: Zaremba on PiS Leader's Online Absence, Mazurek on Journalism as a Battle Cry

Łukasz Mężyk

-- ADRIAN ZANDBERG ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF POLITICIANS USING PUBLIC TRANSPORT FOR COMMUNICATION: “They probably remember Komorowski, whose conversation with a passerby cost him the presidency. However, for friendly media outlets, a few minutes without a fuss is enough. The next day, there will be headlines: ‘Schetyna showed he is close to the people,’ ‘Train ride with Barbara Nowacka coming soon.’” https://www.se.pl/wiadomosci/polityka/adrian-zandberg-komentuje-wyborczy-odjazd-aa-NxM7-hE39-GqVo.html

-- ALTHOUGH HE DOESN’T LOOK AT THE INTERNET, HIS METHOD FITS THE ONLINE WORLD PERFECTLY - PIOTR ZAREMBA IN RZ ON KACZYŃSKI’S LANGUAGE: “Jarosław Kaczyński sometimes spoiled, and sometimes enriched, the Polish debate, but it was always a tool for him to control reality. In these new times, although the PiS leader himself does not browse the internet, his method fits the online world perfectly.”

-- THE OLD ELITES THROW THEMSELVES AT KACZYŃSKI’S WORDS WITH MASOCHISTIC PLEASURE - WRITES ZAREMBA: “The old elites usually throw themselves at his words with masochistic pleasure. The excitement is amplified by the language itself – Kaczyński has long favored all these ‘defamations,’ ‘impossibilities,’ ‘distributions of prestige.’ This provides additional opportunities for biting retorts. But in reality, the elites cannot stand that a humble doctor of law, transformed into an increasingly omnipotent leader, is stealing their words and concepts. In this case, there were many sarcastic remarks that he incites ordinary people with words they do not understand. But Kaczyński explained the word ‘oikophobia’ quite precisely. Moreover, he used it not without reason. Among the Polish upper and middle classes, an attitude of dislike towards their own homeland and nation can be fashionable. One can reduce this to absurdity, as Jacek Żakowski does, presenting PiS supporters as oikophobes because they ‘harm Poland.’ But this will not change the social diagnosis. The publicist from ‘Polityka’ and ‘Gazeta Wyborcza’ should look for followers of such an attitude, described by the British thinker Roger Scruton, around themselves – if the description of reality is to be more than just juggling words.”

-- IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE REVOLUTION IS BURNING OUT, BUT WHAT KACZYŃSKI’S MAIN OPPONENTS SAY IS COMPLETELY UNMEMORABLE - ZAREMBA’S CONCLUSION: “Naturally, Kaczyński probably justifies this by the hatred from the other side, and the circle closes. His own intellectual digressions are a relic of his right and wrong concepts, a reminder of the great influence he has had on Poland’s face, but possibly also of a burning-out revolution. But even here, there is no great cause for concern. What his main opponents – the leaders of PO, Nowoczesna, or the left – say is completely unmemorable.” https://www.rp.pl/Plus-Minus/309279890-Piotr-Zaremba-Jaroslaw-Kaczynski-kradnie-elitom-slowa-i-pojecia.html&template=restricted

-- ROBERT MAZUREK GREETS READERS OF PLUS/MINUS, WRITING ABOUT JOURNALISM THAT INCITES ARMED HORDES TO BATTLE: “In essence, it’s not about the two publicists themselves, because they will manage somehow, but about the fate – pardon the expression – of public debate. It’s true, I’ve long argued that it basically doesn’t exist, and it ended when journalism died, but somehow I want to believe I’m wrong. Journalism faded slowly, becoming more and more like a song to rally armed hordes to battle. Ultimately, the troubadours themselves took up swords and started fighting. The best publicist became the one who shouted the loudest, struck the opponent the hardest, insulted, beat up, and killed with a flourish. And in such a way that no one had any doubts.”

-- MAZUREK ON WRITING FOR RZ, ADMITS THAT IN PREVIOUS ROLES NO ONE TRIED TO IMPOSE A LINE ON HIM: “Well, it’s one of the very few media outlets that not only didn’t set a program line with me (I must honestly admit that no one else tried to impose one on me either), but was even pleased that I would sometimes write against the grain or even in opposition. If so, I will take advantage of it, to your detriment.” https://www.rp.pl/Plus-Minus/309279927-Mazurek-na-wynos-Haiku-na-koniec-swiata.html&template=restricted

-- THE RIGHT-WING’S REACTIONS ARE NOT UP TO THE TIMES, THEY SEEM ORDERED BY FILM DISTRIBUTORS - PIOTR ZAREMBA IN DGP: “It is difficult, at the same time, to resist the impression that the reactions of a large part of conservative circles, which boil down to calls for boycotts, and sometimes bans on the film, are not up to the times. Instead, they give the impression of being specially ordered by the film distributors. I perceive the panicked actions of the management of Radio Gdańsk, and ultimately of TVP controlled by the right-wing, in these terms as well. It is possible that these reactions are even in line with the electorate’s expectations (whether the whole electorate is a question). But in the long run, the devastation of the already weak dialogue concerning culture, which is after all a common space, must be attributed to the losses.”

-- ZAREMBA ON HOW POWER SHOULD HAVE STRONGER NERVES AND NOT GIVE IN TO THE TEMPTATION OF IDEOLOGICAL WARS: “To whom it belongs today, the answer will not be simple. It is partly a condominium, and partly no man’s land. Even if the film world leans more to the left than Poles in general, it has not lost its connection to what I would call the common good. The structural changes proposed by the current government have a chance to provide it with a more solid financial base and make film production more transparent. At the same time, it is worth appealing to everyone, including this government, for strong nerves and not succumbing to the temptation of ideological wars. Polish culture should be, and still is, one.” http://www.gazetaprawna.pl/artykuly/1278195,zaremba-o-filmie-kler-polskie-kino-w-rekach-politykow.html

-- PIOTR ZAREMBA ON FB ABOUT THE TEXT IN DGP: “I recommend my text in today’s DGP magazine. ‘Kler’ is just one of the threads, although I start with news about it. According to my information, the jury, which was leaning towards giving it the Silver Lions, was stopped by ‘Rejtan’ by Waldemar Krzystek and Elżbieta Cherezińska. It also discusses how the television censored the coverage of the gala, likely on the orders of TVP president Jacek Kurski, or at least in accordance with his general instructions – the broadcast was shifted by half an hour to allow for cuts, and the president, of course, knew about this. If anyone is fired for this, they will be a scapegoat. Despite all my criticism of this film, as well as the infantile reception of it by the Gdynia audience, the television’s absurd uproar, which breaks standards, is in fact serving the film’s promotion. However, the whole thing is about something slightly different. I am pondering the title question. And I show that, contrary to the laments, it is a kind of condominium of the rulers and filmmakers. From which stems the quite decent level of Polish cinematography. Filmmakers still have a lot to say, including on the matter of financing. I cite ‘Kamerdyner’ as an example of good cooperation between an artist and government circles. ‘Polityka’ can call this film a ‘national-patriotic superproduction’ – it is not in line with the PiS version of history, but it restores to Polish consciousness a poorly recognized crime in Piaśnica, and more broadly, the fate of the Kashubians. I conclude, in line with my emotions, with a paean to Jan Jakub Kolski’s ‘Ułaskawienie’ (The Absolution). This film was heavily funded by the same TVP, which behaved so foolishly at the Gdynia finale. Mateusz Matyszkowicz deserves personal credit for this.” https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100011509202636

-- KRZYSZTOF POMIAN IN GW MAGAZINE ON THE RIGHT-WING’S COUNTER-REACTION TO CULTURE: “So, the exhibition features, for example: Lem, Wajda, Kołakowski, or Kantor, and from younger artists, Warlikowski, Lupa, or Klata, Pawlikowski, and Holland, because they are all present in Western culture. It so happens that at the same time, they are the most hated by the current regime in Poland. Meanwhile, the Polish national movement has been and remains intellectually weak. It has not produced a single work that has transcended the Polish language.” http://wyborcza.pl/magazyn/7,124059,23980832,prof-krzysztof-pomian-polacy-sa-gleboko-podzieleni-a.html

-- THE PRESIDENT’S FATHER SAYS DUDA RESPECTS TUSK - SE: “- It was a normal meeting. Normal people maintain normal relations, even if they disagree politically. But they respect each other. Tusk is also human, and we should all respect each other – emphasizes Prof. Jan Tadeusz Duda. And he concludes that such a meeting will not harm his son.” https://www.se.pl/wiadomosci/polityka/ojciec-prezydenta-moj-syn-szanuje-tuska-tylko-u-nas-aa-CnNy-G7xA-mDry.html

-- BUDKA AND GOLBIK CHANGED CANDIDATES ON THE LISTS: “As revealed by ‘Nowiny Gliwickie,’ at the last moment, MP Borys Budka and MP Marta Golbik changed candidates on the lists. New names appeared, and those under which residents had signed their support disappeared. It is also outrageous that the most interested parties learned about the change only after the lists were registered. They could no longer react. - Our constitutional right has been violated – Katarzyna Janus, Natalia Wójcik, and Ewa Lutogniewska, whose names were removed, told Nowiny.” https://wiadomosci.wp.pl/skandal-w-gliwicach-po-i-nowoczesna-pozmienialy-listy-wyborcze-6300181518624897a

-- MARCIN FIJOŁEK ON SIENKIEWICZ’S BOOK AND THE UNSPOKEN SUGGESTION IN ITS FOREWORD: “The suggestion that Paweł Wojtunik had some influence on the entire operation is left unspoken in Sienkiewicz’s book – it hangs there like a gun on a stage during a play, but in this case, it doesn’t fire. One can only guess why this thread is cut off at the bud.”

-- FIJOŁEK ON THE WARNING FOR THE OPPOSITION CONTAINED IN SIENKIEWICZ’S BOOK: “Instead, we receive a kind of hybrid, in which Sienkiewicz winks at the reader, suggesting that he has more knowledge than theoretical (I am inclined to believe this), and then puts on the suit of an independent observer of reality who simply wants to fix it. It grates a bit. In essence, apart from one moment when the author admits his helplessness as a supervisor of services who could not control them properly (resulting in the tape scandal), there is no reckoning with the period of Donald Tusk’s leadership. Well, maybe except for a small admission of (partial) guilt for the matter (or perhaps mainly for the way) of withdrawal, the dismantling of the state from smaller centers. It is certainly worth for ardent supporters of the opposition to also reach for ‘Theoretically State.’ A noteworthy fragment is Sienkiewicz’s criticism directed at the liberal side: mainly for their contempt for the right-wing and its voters. According to the author, this is a political dead end, and the book is meant – as Sienkiewicz himself writes – as a warning to the opposition, because the author does not hide his political sympathies. However, I do not have excessive hopes that in the long run, lessons will be learned, because the dislike of the political elites of the Third Polish Republic is simply innate, reflexive, which Sienkiewicz should have well noted in his notebooks.” https://wpolityce.pl/m/polityka/414265-co-ujawnia-bartlomiej-sienkiewicz-w-swojej-nowej-ksiazce

-- EWA SIEDLECKA ASKS IF THE SUPREME ADMINISTRATIVE COURT DOES NOT WANT TO GRAPPLE WITH PIS: “The Supreme Administrative Court ruled inconsistently. The security measure it applied will change little. The competition for the Supreme Court was either entirely illegal or entirely legal. (...) Since the lawyers of the European Commission concluded that such a suspension is legally possible, there is no reason why a Polish court should not recognize such a possibility. Of course, the judges of the NSA would immediately be threatened by the prosecutor’s office – as it did to the judges of the Supreme Court who suspended the effect of pension regulations, posing a preliminary question to the CJEU. But if the judges were to limit their own independence out of legally rationalized fear of repression, it would mean that PiS is succeeding in launching the mechanism that Czesław Miłosz described in ‘The Captive Mind.’” https://www.polityka.pl/tygodnikpolityka/kraj/1765738,1,nsa-nie-chce-sie-kopac-z-pis-em.read

-- BŁAŻEJ SPYCHALSKI, WHEN ASKED BY PIOTR WITWICKI IF BEING IN THE EU IS A MATTER OF STATE INTEREST FOR POLAND - in an interview in RZ: “Of course, it is. PiS is a party that voted in favor of accession to the EU in the accession referendum. The late President Lech Kaczyński referred to a European Union faithful to its roots, faithful to the founding fathers. We care about a strong Poland in a united Europe. However, today in Brussels there is a whole group of officials who would like a Union based on quasi-federalist principles, and we do not agree to that.”

-- SPYCHALSKI TELLS WITWICKI THAT THE PRESIDENT LAUGHS AT MEMES ABOUT HIMSELF: “In politics, the element of protest is natural. The President works a lot, and I am very impressed by his energy level. He has a distance to himself and loves to joke. He can also laugh at memes concerning him. (...) Sometimes some reach him. He is very active on social media, after all.” https://www.rp.pl/Plus-Minus/309279888-Blazej-Spychalski-Prezydent-Andrzej-Duda-smieje-sie-z-memow-na-swoj-temat.html&template=restricted

-- LESZEK JAŻDŻEWSKI IN GW ON THE LIBERALS’ PROBLEM: “Liberals want equality at the start, the left at the end. Liberals want a fair game, the left wants to predetermine its outcome. The problem is that liberals have long been unable to guarantee these fair rules. The law of the strongest does not mean justice.” http://wyborcza.pl/magazyn/7,124059,23981085,liberalowie-musza-wrocic-do-gry.html

-- JOANNA SENYSZYN IN AN INTERVIEW WITH MAGDALENA RIGAMONTI IN DGP RECALLS HOW TUSK WARNED OF WAR: “Many things can still happen. Do you remember 2014? It was thought that PO would get fewer votes in the European Parliament elections. However, Russia annexed Crimea, the war in eastern Ukraine began, and Donald Tusk said that it was unknown whether our children would go to school on September 1st. Of course, he didn’t invent this himself, but specialists advised him, because they knew that an atmosphere of fear causes consolidation around the ruling party. And the goal of every ruling party is, after all, to maintain power.”

-- FRAGMENT OF THE RIGAMONTI AND SENYSZYN INTERVIEW ON HOW SLD GOT CLOSER TO THE CHURCH BEFORE THE EU REFERENDUM: “- Leszek Miller decided that Brussels was worth a mass. And I can still understand that, because there was a danger that the Church would agitate against accession to the EU. - And you needed it. - Poles needed it. - Politicians needed it to maintain power. - No, it was about entering the European Union. And since it is known that the Church is absolutely ruthless and cruel, that it only looks at its own interests, it had to be bargained with. On the other hand, perhaps it calculated that since it is the largest landowner (160,000 hectares), it is worth entering the EU and receiving EU subsidies. There is another thing – the Pope supported Poland’s entry into the Union, and these were still times when the Polish Church was delighted with the Pope. Not like now. Back then, the Pope was Polish, now Francis unfortunately has nothing to do with Poland and is not liked or valued by our hierarchs. Miller, as an atheist, did not go to mass, but before the EU referendum, he was very cautious in his relations with the Church.”

-- FRAGMENT OF RIGAMONTI’S INTERVIEW IN DGP, IN WHICH SENYSZYN SPEAKS ABOUT HER DISABILITY: “- Hip? - Pubic bone, sacrum, pelvis, and thigh. All in one go. Surgery and two months of lying still. In May, I was already doing quite well, I went for rehabilitation, I returned on June 10th, doctors strictly ordered me to discard my crutches and... On the first day, I fell and broke my thigh just below the previous fracture. I have a 30-centimeter titanium plate uniting the bone. They say a bomb doesn’t hit the same place twice. But it does. Now I think I’ve exhausted my quota of misfortunes. - Third time’s the charm. - Even if you count this as one, I’ve had three already – a heart attack with cardiac arrest in 2014, and West Nile virus. After the heart attack, I wrote that I wanted to reassure everyone, because not only is there no light at the end of the tunnel, there is no tunnel either. http://wiadomosci.dziennik.pl/opinie/artykuly/582019,sld-kosciol-joanna-senyszyn.html
