-- 10 YEARS AGO, PROF. BRONISŁAW GEREMEK DIED IN A CAR ACCIDENT IN LUBIEŃ, WIELKOPOLSKA.

-- NO ONE WRITES SUCH PIECES ANYMORE TODAY -- FRAGMENT OF A TEXT BY EWA MILEWICZ ABOUT BRONISŁAW GEREMEK FROM 2008: "When negotiations around Prime Minister Suchocka's government were ongoing, I asked Geremek about their status. The professor remained silent, cleaning his pipe with great interest. After a moment, he said: 'Please, the next question.' And so, in silence, he continued cleaning his pipe through several more questions. Finally, he said: 'Madam editor, I enjoy answering questions that I ask myself the most.'"

-- ANOTHER FRAGMENT OF EWA MILEWICZ'S TEXT: "Geremek wasn't just about public affairs. It was evident, even on television screens, that he had a great weakness for some women. He once spoke with a certain journalist, a beautiful woman, about Europe. Formally, the conversation was on that topic. In reality, however, it wasn't Europe that was visible, but Geremek's fascination with the journalist. After that program, someone told Geremek that there should have been a warning on the screen: 'Program about seduction. For adults 18+.' He laughed but did not deny it." http://wyborcza.pl/7,161389,23659612,polityk-historyk-obywatel-a-moze-uwodziciel.html

-- PROFESSOR SAMSONOWICZ REMEMBERED GEREMEK IN 2008 - FRAGMENT OF A CONVERSATION WITH RAFAŁ KALUKIN: "Absolutely. His small apartment on Piwna Street was a place for regular gatherings of a large group for 20 years. Purely social gatherings, although the topics we discussed ended up in the security services' dossier in the 1970s. The apartment was bugged. Bronek was also a passionate film buff. We probably went to a movie or a play every week. We also used to go to the Narew River. He liked it there so much that he bought a plot of land nearby. I'm afraid you remember Geremek from the last twenty years. And that was a different Bronek then. He radically changed during martial law, after being released from internment. He began to be seen as the intellectual voice of the opposition. It was a burden that terribly tired him." http://wyborcza.pl/7,161389,23661619,bronislaw-geremek-na-uniwersytecie-inny-bronek.html

-- RZ AND GW ARE PUBLISHING MEMORIES OF THE PROFESSOR.

-- RAFAŁ TRZASKOWSKI ON FB ABOUT GEREMEK, OR HIMSELF? "Bronisław Geremek taught me European Civilization at the College of Europe in Natolin, in French. He was serious, thoughtful, and stern. I received the highest grade of the year because my French at the time didn't allow for oratorical displays and forced me to speak coolly, precisely, and economically. The professor liked substance. I remember I presented Edgar Morin's credo from 'Penser l'Europe'. I felt like I was taking the exam of a lifetime with a biblical patriarch from Rembrandt's paintings. I understood the book 10 years later. And when, in 2015, I presented Edgar Morin with an award at the summit of European ministers of the Weimar Triangle in Paris, I had an irresistible impression that the professor was looking at me with a slight smile from the paintings hanging on the walls of the palace on Quai d'Orsay. Still, it was worth reading Morin."

-- A CLENCHED FIST IS A SYMBOL OF 3 YEARS OF PIS - PLATFORMA'S SPOT FOR THE 550TH ANNIVERSARY OF PARLIAMENTARISM: 300POLITYKA is the first to publish the film that Platforma Obywatelska will present at the alternative celebrations of the 550th anniversary of parliamentarism organized by them. https://300polityka.pl/news/2018/07/13/zacisnieta-piesc-to-symbol-parlamentaryzmu-3-lat-rzadow-pis-2-minutowy-spot-po-na-obchody-550-lecia-parlamentaryzmu/

-- ON THE 300 LIVEBLOG: Suski on the boycott of the Sejm: "I don't know, maybe they want to announce that they are forming a government in exile in Berlin, with Tusk as prime minister." https://300polityka.pl/live/2018/07/13/

-- WHY DIDN'T THE YOUTH STAND SOLIDLY BEHIND THE SUPREME COURT THIS YEAR - Łukasz Rogojsz in Gazeta.pl: "Young people are problematic. They act unconventionally, it's hard to predict what they will do, and even harder to put them in one 'drawer,' close it, and be done with it. Most importantly, however, they are uncontrollable – they do what they think is right and don't care if someone expects something from them. All of this was confirmed at the beginning of July, when the fate of the Supreme Court was being decided. (...) However, nothing happens without a reason, and instead of condemning the younger generation, as happened, for example, when they didn't join en masse in defense of the Constitutional Tribunal, it's worth delving into the problem."

-- ROGOJSZ ON THE LACK OF CELEBRITIES: "Why were last year's protests such a success and attracted thousands of young people who hadn't been civically engaged before? Because protesting was cool, it became a trend. Among friends, it was nice to boast that you went every evening to fight for the separation of powers, that you were participating in this historic event. You could meet influencers and pop culture icons at the protests. Talk to them, take a picture. You can laugh that for today's teenagers and their slightly older friends, Kuba Wojewódzki, Anja Rubik, or Maffashion are the reference points, but that's just how it is, and there's no point in being offended by reality. Twelve months ago, that made a difference. Celebrities eagerly broadcast and reported on the protests – from Twitter, through Facebook and Instagram, to Snapchat. Now, that was missing. And so, the young people were also missing." http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/7,114884,23661973,dlaczego-w-tym-roku-mlodzi-nie-staneli-murem-za-sadem-najwyzszym.html

-- LET'S HOPE PIS HASN'T BACKED THE WRONG HORSE - Adam Leszczyński in Oko on PiS's reaction to Trump: "PiS politicians unequivocally support Trump on the NATO issue, opposing democratic Western European countries. They are at odds with France and Germany, so they can only hope that the US will ensure Poland's security. Let's hope they haven't backed the wrong horse." https://oko.press/trump-demoluje-nato-pis-zachwycony-trudno-odepchnac-argumenty-trumpa/

-- MARCIN ANTOSIEWICZ ON HOW TRUMP IS PLAYING EUROPE AND POLAND: "It's possible that Trump will strive for even closer bilateral relations with Warsaw, perhaps even sending an American division to Poland, which will be criticized by Russia, but also by Germany. 'This will raise concerns in Germany, which may say: if these matters are not coordinated with us, if you are focusing on bilateralism with the Americans, which complicates our dialogue with Russia, then we will do what we want with Russia without consulting you,' warns Kai-Olaf Lang, who adds that in the current situation, Poland has the least say, becoming an object in Trump's game with Europe." http://m.newsweek.pl/swiat/donald-trump-uzywa-polski-w-klotni-z-europa-na-szali-polskie-bezpieczenstwo,artykuly,430016,1.html

-- THEY ARE CHANGING THE LAW TO HAVE A COURT - Łukasz Woźnicki and Ewa Ivanowa in GW.

-- THEY APPROVED THE PURGE IN THE SUPREME COURT - GW on the National Judicial Council (KRS).

-- PIS MAKES IT EASIER TO SEIZE POWER AFTER THE RESIGNATION OF PRESIDENT GERSDORF - headline in RZ.

-- EWA SIEDLECKA ON THE ROLE OF THE NSA IN THE PIS AMENDMENT: "In such a case, the Supreme Administrative Court (NSA) has only one legally compliant option: when an appeal against the dismissal of an application without consideration, due to a negative opinion of a candidate or any other action by the KRS in such a competition procedure, reaches it, it should annul the competition as violating the provisions of the constitution. Such an obligation for the NSA arises not only from the constitution but also from many years of NSA jurisprudence, where it has been recognized that if the contradiction with the constitution is obvious, the NSA resolves the matter by directly applying the constitution. It will be interesting to see if the NSA judges will have sufficient dignity and responsibility for the state and their office to maintain this line of jurisprudence in the PiS state." https://siedlecka.blog.polityka.pl/2018/07/12/lex-rapta/?nocheck=1

-- ZUZANNA DĄBROWSKA ON PIS'S BUFFERS - PAWŁOWICZ AND PIOTROWICZ - in RZ: "It seems that nothing will stop PiS on this path anymore; the deputies and senators will rush at the pace set by those dictating the speed in this race – Deputy Pawłowicz and Deputy Piotrowicz. Until they reach the finish line." http://www.rp.pl/Komentarze/307129881-Dabrowska-Wszystkie-bufory-PiS.html

-- MARCIN PIASECKI in RZ on cleaning up after Macierewicz: "It will be very difficult to rebuild Poland's recently quite decent position in the NATO structure. This is made even more difficult by the fact that alliance officials simply see the constant rotation of personnel and competencies in our military. However, just like the Polish public opinion, they probably find it difficult to discern a mechanism that would allow our Armed Forces to emerge from this chaos." http://www.rp.pl/Opinie/307129874-Jak-dlugo-jeszcze-trzeba-bedzie-sprzatac-po-Macierewiczu.html

-- EVERYTHING HAS ALREADY BEEN DISTRIBUTED - Paweł Rożyński on public sector protests - writes in RZ: "The government is afraid that if it concedes even an inch, other social groups will soon come. The sad conclusion is that representatives of the public sector were late with their protest announcements. Everything that could be distributed in the current financial situation has already been distributed." http://www.rp.pl/Blogi/307129875-Budzet-napiety-protest-spozniony.html

-- GW ON THE FRONT PAGE ABOUT PROTESTS - TODAY FARMERS ARE TAKING TO THE STREETS.

-- AUTUMN WAVE OF PROTESTS - one of the headlines on the front page of RZ.

-- JOANNA SOLSKA ON A HOT AUTUMN OF PROTESTS: "Those who work are actually paying for the gifts with which PiS generously bestows selected groups. And their work is neither respected nor adequately compensated. So, we will see strikes and protests."

-- SOLSKA ON THE DILEMMA OF SOLIDARITY: "Solidarity is in trouble. If its leaders believed that people would be satisfied with the restoration of the earlier retirement age and the 500+ program, they miscalculated. Those who are still working have the right to expect that their labor will be primarily appreciated. Especially in a situation where there will be a growing shortage of hands each year. Because all these gifts, so generously offered by PiS to selected groups so far, must actually be financed by those who work. They deserve them in the first place. Solidarity does not understand this; OPZZ already knows it. It's time for the government." https://www.polityka.pl/tygodnikpolityka/rynek/1756206,1,zanosi-sie-na-goraca-jesien-protestow.read

-- ŁUKASZ PAWŁOWSKI FROM KULTURA LIBERALNA ON THE HYPOCRISY OF THE RULING PARTY REGARDING IMMIGRANTS - in Gazeta.pl: "First of all, it is proof of the rulers' hypocrisy. After all, not long ago we heard that we cannot accept arrivals from the Middle East precisely because they are not refugees but economic migrants. Today, it turns out that we need such migrants. Secondly, it turns out that the supposedly uncompromising and tough government – which was supposed to defend Poles from terrible immigrants – has to yield to banal labor market requirements. The boastful promises of stopping migration can be put aside. Likewise, the promises of thoroughly controlling every immigrant entering and leaving Poland. At this scale of the phenomenon, it is unlikely. Finally, thirdly, by combining anti-immigrant rhetoric with opening borders, the government is paving the way for social conflicts comparable to those sometimes faced by Western countries. This is another promise that our strong-worded radicals in power will not fulfill. After all, we were supposed to avoid the mistakes of the West." http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/7,161770,23660492,pawlowski-wielki-blef-ws-imigrantow-byli-pasozytami-dzis.html

-- MAREK SUSKI TELLS ROBERT MAZUREK HOW HE READS POETRY - fragment of a conversation with DGP: "Do you have poems by your bedside? Do you read poetry? - Of course. After a whole day of reading statutes, regulations, where there are only articles and paragraphs, in the evening I turn on music and read. - What? - Oh, it varies, from the national bards through Shakespeare, and I'm not just talking about his plays, but his sonnets, poems, to contemporary poetry. But epigrams too. - I don't believe you. Exhausted after a whole day, a man drinks beer and watches a crime drama. - But no! Although I like beer too, but for me, poetry is an escape from this terrible, technocratic, legalistic language. Instead of a string of paragraphs, I have juxtapositions of words that evoke emotion, contemplation, feelings in a person. And that's simply called poetry. It's a cure for statutory gibberish; I have to read something beautiful, or I'd go crazy! - Are you really able to read poems after a whole day? - After a whole day in the Sejm, at work, I can't paint anything. I sit down and it's useless. Then I can only draw caricatures. To paint something else, I have to walk around the yard, pick a nettle here, trim something there, cut a dry branch, plant flowers, and thus, de-stressed, the next day I can start thinking about painting." http://wiadomosci.dziennik.pl/opinie/artykuly/577785,marek-suski-wywiad-robert-mazurek-wiersze-filmy-obrazy-wzruszenie.html
