STATE OF PLAY: Karnowski on PiS Candidates as a Good Sign for Parliamentary Elections, Matyja Rhetorically Asks: Did Elites Suffer Financially? Radziejowski: Entering Politics Means a Life Between Ceremony, Twitter, and Intrigue

-- JAKI PUBLISHES A SPOT ABOUT TRZASKOWSKI DIVIDING WARSAW RESIDENTS AND PARTICIPATES IN A MEETING WITH CHILDREN FROM ORPHANAGES, MORAWIECKI ON COMPROMISE - 300LIVE: https://300polityka.pl/live/2018/04/28/

-- THE OPPOSITION GATHERED A SUPPLY OF CHILLED CHAMPAGNE AND TOASTED OCTOPUS NIBBLES FOR THE PRESENTATION OF PIS CANDIDATES - Jacek Karnowski: “I suspect that in anticipation of this day, a considerable supply of chilled champagne and toasted octopus nibbles has been gathered in the opposition camp. Because it was supposed to be as predicted on TVN and in Michnik's newspaper: the ruling camp has a short bench of personalities deployable in large cities, and besides, Jarosław Kaczyński will consciously put forward weaker candidates because he fears someone might emerge within his party. Meanwhile, the day after the United Right's allies announced their candidates, the champagne remains where it was, and the faces of opposition politicians do not indicate enthusiasm.”

-- IF THE RIGHT'S CANDIDATES ARE A TEST FOR THE PARLIAMENTARY SHOWDOWN, IT'S A GOOD SIGN - continues Karnowski: “One could say that Jarosław Kaczyński has once again executed a non-obvious maneuver, but one that is beneficial for the entire formation. He was also able to rise above personal fears and doubts in several places. If we treat the local government elections as a test for the parliamentary showdown, then this is a good sign for PiS and the rest of the right.” https://wpolityce.pl/polityka/392176-jesli-traktowac-wybory-samorzadowe-jako-test-przed-parlamentarnymi-to-ten-wybor-jest-dla-prawicy-dobrym-znakiem

-- MAŁGORZATA WASSERMANN ON THE METRO IN CRACOW: “Other problems in Krakow mentioned by Wassermann are those 'which will be resolved in agreement with the government.' - These are smog, traffic jams, safety, connections, bypasses; the time will come for them as it's a matter of the program. I have invited the best experts in Krakow to cooperate – she added. - The metro is close to my heart. I know that discussions have begun, and the first studies and designs have been commissioned. I view this idea positively.” http://www.gazetakrakowska.pl/wiadomosci/krakow/a/malgorzata-wassermann-w-kampanii-nie-bede-nikogo-atakowac-personalnie,13133584/

-- TRZASKOWSKI WOULD PREFER DWORCZYK - believes Anna Dąbrowska on the Polityka weekly portal: “Trzaskowski certainly won't be so easily defeated, but he would have preferred to fight for the capital with Dworczyk. He could ignore the latter, but he has to respond to Jaki's provocations from day one.”

-- AT NOWOGRODZKA STREET, THERE IS FAITH IN JAKI'S SUCCESS - DĄBROWSKA BELIEVES: “At Nowogrodzka [PiS headquarters], there is genuine strong faith that Jaki can finally wrest the capital from Platforma after 16 years. This prestigious victory would give the United Right a huge boost for the parliamentary elections. To the doubters, PiS politicians remind them that no one gave Duda a chance either, but he didn't listen to them; instead, from 8 AM (like Jaki), he organized press conferences and handed out tea near the metro. Candidate Jaki is expected to repeat this unexpected success.” https://www.polityka.pl/tygodnikpolityka/kraj/1747230,1,jaka-bedzie-kampania-jakiego-w-warszawie.read

-- PIS CONTINUES TO SEEK A NEW OPENING - Łukasz Pawłowski from Kultura Liberalna on gazeta.pl: “For weeks, Law and Justice has been seeking a 'new opening' that would allow the party to leave behind current crises and once again set the tone for public debate. This did not succeed during the recent program convention, nor did it succeed yesterday. Kaczyński's announcement of the party's candidates for city mayors is not only further proof of the crisis PiS finds itself in, but also that the conflict with the President is in full swing.”

-- IN PAWŁOWSKI'S OPINION, JAKI'S VICTORY WOULD NOT BE ADVANTAGEOUS FOR KACZYŃSKI: “The list includes only two political stars – Małgorzata Wasserman and Patryk Jaki – but their chances of success in Krakow and Warsaw, respectively, are moderate. Interestingly, Jaki is closer to victory at the moment, but paradoxically, his potential win would be unwelcome to... Kaczyński himself.” http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/7,161770,23328961,pawlowski-pis-wciaz-poszukuje-nowego-otwarcia-na-konwencji.html#Z_MT

-- KRYSTYNA PAWŁOWICZ IS THE SHORTEST PATH TO DECHRISTIANIZATION OF POLAND - writes Michał Szułdrzyński in RZ: “Moreover, by writing in such a disgusting way about homosexual people, she undermines the opposition of Catholics to progressive ideas such as 'same-sex marriages.' Their proponents gain an easy argument that Catholics simply obsessively hate gays and lesbians, and therefore do not want to recognize their unions as legal. For this reason, I have the impression that if the ideological pendulum in Poland quickly swings in a leftward direction, it will undoubtedly be the fault of the parliamentarian professor. Jarosław Kaczyński stated over two decades ago that the shortest path to the dechristianization of Poland leads through ZChN [Christian National Union]. Today, the shortest path to the dechristianization of Poland is not taken by leftists and enemies of the Church, but by Krystyna Pawłowicz.” http://www.rp.pl/Plus-Minus/304269888-Michal-Szuldrzynski-Tweet-Pawlowicz-Pogarda-i-chamstwo.html

-- BARTŁOMIEJ RADZIEJOWSKI STATES THAT POLITICS OFFERS EITHER THE ROLE OF COURTIERS OR PARASITIZING ON PUBLIC MONEY - in an interview with Piotr Witwicki in RZ: “Two zombie armies have been created, engaged in fulfilling the whims of leaders. These leaders are interested in owning these parties. To people like us – but also to people like Ludwik Dorn – they offer the roles of courtiers. Alternatively, parasitizing on public money. Or both. And so there are two paths: either enter into this, or establish a 'right-wing Razem.' A right-wing or any other 'Razem' sounds bad and minimalist to me. The foundations of Polish politics should be shaken. The rules of the game should be changed, not just to provide bored viewers with different – perhaps slightly better, perhaps not – entertainment.”

-- RADZIEJOWSKI ON THE GENERATION BURIED IN MORTGAGES AND DIAPERS: “I don't see potential for this in my generation. It's buried in diapers and mortgages. The propensity for risk and nonconformism is low. There are political opportunities, but they are not strictly generational. People our age can play a big role, but not the only one. Perhaps when they turn forty, raise their children, and pay off their mortgages. Perhaps when they are consolidated by the equivalent of what the first Solidarity or 1989 was for today's 60- and 70-year-olds. Currently, action needs to be broader, more intergenerational. I consider faith in the redemptive role of our generation to be something like…”

-- WHEN YOU ENTER POLITICS, LIFE BEGINS BETWEEN CEREMONY, TWITTER, AND INTRIGUE - RADZIEJOWSKI: “If we talk about the mediocrity of government, we must remember that it stems largely from the mediocrity of the environment. From this arises, on the one hand, the accusation that politicians do not build a better environment or even spoil it. On the other hand, there is the crucial role of organic work. It is not particularly appreciated or well-paid, but it is very important. It has the power to change imagination and build better elites. I think we have some successes here, within our modest means. And perhaps it's time for the next step. When you enter politics, life begins between ceremony, Twitter, and intrigue. You don't have time for intellectual work, so you use what's available. Since what surrounds you is mediocre, your politics is also mediocre.” http://www.rp.pl/Plus-Minus/304269901-Bartlomiej-Radziejewski-Zakopani-w-pieluchach-Polski-nie-zmienia.html&template=restricted

-- PAWŁOWICZ OPENS THE WAY FOR TRUMP - Jakub Majmurek in GW: “Pawłowicz herself will not become the Polish Trump, nor do her PiS colleagues, such as Dominik Tarczyński and Stanisław Pięta, who build their presence in public media very similarly, have much chance of doing so. The danger lies in the fact that this trio, along with many right-wing media personalities (Wojciech Cejrowski, Rafał Ziemkiewicz), is currently working to make a Polish Trump possible someday. Every chirp from parliamentarian Pawłowicz opens the way to a politics where the place of substantive and democratic debate is taken by angry political jesters beating each other over the head, who, to an attentive observer, appear to be parodies of themselves.”

-- EVEN VOTERS DISTANT FROM PIS WILL YEARN FOR KACZYŃSKI'S OLD-FASHIONED INTELLECTUAL FLAIR - Majmurek's conclusion: “If such politics prevails in Poland, then even people who are currently politically distant from PiS will yearn for the old-fashioned, intellectual flair that Jarosław Kaczyński still cultivates, despite all the variations of 'treacherous murders'.” http://wyborcza.pl/7,75968,23333133,czas-gniewnych-blaznow-krystyna-pawlowicz-to-prototyp-polskiego.html

-- RAFAŁ MATYJA IN GW ON THE CHURCH AS A BENEFICIARY OF THE ROUND TABLE: “But if you care, I'll admit that there was a moment when I felt anger, and not because of the actions of politicians. Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski once said that today's conflict has its roots in 1945. This distorts the essence of the dispute, whose parties are representatives of different currents of the Solidarity camp. If these words had been spoken by a PiS MP, I might have overlooked them. But they were uttered by a representative of an institution that is the biggest beneficiary of the systemic transformation, which advocated for dialogue with the authorities in the PRL era and for the Round Table.”

– WHICH ELITES SUFFERED FINANCIALLY UNDER PIS - MATYJA ASKS RHETORICALLY: “But I ask, did these elites suffer financially, did they lose their livelihoods? The only example of an attack on individual material interests so far is the reduction of military and secret police pensions.” http://wyborcza.pl/magazyn/7,124059,23325868,rafal-matyja-tworca-projektu-iv-rp-prawdziwa-zbrodnia.html

-- IT IS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND THE PROTESTERS' POSITION - Michał Karnowski: “It is difficult to understand such an unambiguous position. After all, the aid offered by the government also represents real money that will remain in family budgets. We are talking about funds necessary for care, rehabilitation equipment, and rehabilitation procedures. We don't know the details, but it's not a bad direction, considering that the demand for a 500 PLN rehabilitation supplement is almost impossible; it would essentially be a repeat of the 500+ program, and its cost would reach billions. Granting such a benefit to one group would mean extending it to all disabled groups.”

-- THE PROTEST IS ENTERING A PHASE OF RITUALIZATION - Karnowski continues to write: “The protest is slowly entering a phase of stabilization, or perhaps even a certain ritualization; it is still extensively covered by the media, but not as extensively as at the very beginning. It is also evident that it does not bring about more serious political consequences, although it is, of course, a very inconvenient matter for the 'Good Change' team. More important, however, is that the government has a truly clear conscience on this matter. It is doing everything it can to help this group, and therefore will ultimately emerge from this crisis unscathed.” https://wpolityce.pl/polityka/392212-pomoc-ktora-opiekunom-osob-niepelnosprawnych-zaproponowal-dzis-rzad-to-takze-realne-pieniadze-trudno-zrozumiec-kolejne-nie

-- IWONA HARTWICH ON PO MPS WHO ARE AFRAID OF CONFRONTATION WITH PROTESTERS - says in GW: “Parties that are in the Sejm for the first time, namely Kukiz'15 and Nowoczesna, are showing us great support. Especially MPs Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus and Agnieszka Ścigaj, who are washing our clothes, bringing us cleaning supplies, and food. No one from Civic Platform and PSL has come. They might be afraid of confrontation, because the increase in the care allowance was not the only demand in 2014. Recently, I had the opportunity to ask Bartosz Arłukowicz, the then Minister of Health, where the disability card is, which we were promised, and which was supposed to provide quick access to specialist doctors, free medication, diapers, and rehabilitation.”

-- SZYDŁO IS INTERESTED IN THE BOY IN GREAT BRITAIN - says Hartwich: “I wish that politicians would finally take an interest in them. Beata Szydło is concerned with a boy from Great Britain. Of course, I sympathize with him greatly, but at the same time, in Nowy Targ, 17-year-old Piotruś Klauzowicz lies bedridden. His mother spends colossal sums on diapers, medication, tubes, and catheters. She should have these for free. She would surely be pleased if Prime Minister Szydło visited her.”

-- MANY OF US VOTED FOR PIS - says Hartwich: “We are devastated by the attitude of the authorities. Many of us voted for PiS because they made promises, and we trusted them. This group of disabled people protesting today has the right to feel deceived.” http://wyborcza.pl/7,75968,23332589,iwona-hartwich-dla-wyborczej-jeden-posel-obiecywal-gesine.html

-- JAN PARYS STATES THAT JAN OLSZEWSKI SHOULD HAVE CALLED PEOPLE TO COME BEFORE PARLIAMENT IN 1992 - in an interview with Eliza Olczyk in RZ: “I have the impression that on the day the Sejm voted on the dismissal of the government, the Prime Minister could have called the residents of Warsaw to gather before the parliament. Some members of the government were indeed counting on this. Perhaps if tens of thousands of people had come to the Sejm, the MPs would have voted differently. Jan Olszewski, however, did not decide to take such a step. He was likely deluding himself that politicians would be ashamed of being agents and would do nothing to harm the Republic. It turned out that these were intellectual fantasies that did not fit the brutal political game. Agents and their colleagues voted to harm the Republic without remorse and with joy. Or perhaps Jan Olszewski acted responsibly, not wanting to incite social unrest? Appealing for peaceful support from citizens is a normal thing in a democracy and there is no need to make a problem out of it. After your dismissal from the government, the Movement for the Defense of Jan Parys was formed. It was a very pleasant manifestation of people's support for what the government was doing in the area of defense, because that was the point, not just defending me personally. Simply put, I was identified with pro-Western defense policy.” http://www.rp.pl/Plus-Minus/304269890-Jan-Parys-Caly-czas-nie-jestesmy-panstwem-w-pelni-suwerennym.html&template=restricted
