STATE OF PLAY: Zaremba on Macierewicz's Line Being Silenced Too Late, Szułdrzyński on 'Lemming' Hatred, Sroczyński: PiS Weakening in Polls Loses its Aura of Effectiveness

-- President Andrzej Duda participated in the "Janosik's Birthday" run in Skaryszewski Park in Warsaw. This is an annual event organized by the family and friends of Paweł Janeczek, an officer of the Government Protection Bureau who died in the Smolensk catastrophe. http://www.prezydent.pl/aktualnosci/wydarzenia/art,957,prezydent-na-biegu-urodziny-janosika.html

-- DETAILED REPORTS FROM BOTH CONVENTIONS: Mastalerek: Morawiecki's groundbreaking speech. In this form, it will be a great asset in the campaign. PMM: Poland cannot be a "Poland of impossibility", a "Poland of powerlessness". Polish power versus Polish powerlessness. Next week, a draft amendment to the penal codes. Ziobro: We want to show criminals their place. Kaczyński: We have stumbled. Jaki: It is symbolic that the candidate for the mayor of Warsaw and the leaders of PO and N are speaking against a backdrop of office buildings, symbols of developers' rule. They have shown who Warsaw is for. Trzaskowski: Warsaw should be respectable! Warsaw should be cool! Szefernaker: The opposition announces that it will follow the path of the presidency of Warsaw that was taken by the tenement house cleaners. A path of social injustice and contempt for the weaker. Halicki: Here, in this hall, the spectacular victory of Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz began. It's worth remembering, because we will go the same way! https://300polityka.pl/live/2018/04/14/

-- MACIEREWICZ'S LINE WAS SHUT DOWN TOO LATE TO AVOID THE IMPRESSION OF DISSONANCE AND INCONSISTENCY - PIOTR ZAREMBA: “Anyone who knows the realities of government television knows that the decision to block information was made at the highest level. Suddenly, Macierewicz's line became a burden. However, it was a bit too late to avoid the impression of dissonance, confusion, and inconsistency. Of course, many Poles still like PiS – for other reasons. But it will be difficult to explain such an ending. Unless, of course, they have something else up their sleeve. But it's becoming increasingly difficult to believe that.”

-- THE ANTI-PIS SIDE ALSO BROKE THE TRUCE REGARDING THE ATMOSPHERE, WRITES ZAREMBA: “At the same time, the anti-PiS side also broke a kind of truce regarding the atmosphere. The commotion surrounding Lech Kaczyński's funeral at Wawel, the increasingly brutal demands: "End the mourning!". Anti-clerical riots around the cross in front of the Presidential Palace. The multiplication of absurd theories: Cezary Michalski claimed that the accident happened because of Lech Kaczyński just a few days after April 10th, and PO politicians determined the pilots' guilt in party broadcasts. I am not claiming that the entire liberal-left camp participated in this, but a large part of it at least condoned it. And 'Gazeta Wyborcza' was at the forefront of those condoning it.”

-- ZAREMBA ON CZUCHNOWSKI: “Although journalistic standards have long since hit rock bottom, Czuchnowski nevertheless surprised with his quite un-journalistic aggression. And he amused with rhetoric that was until recently reserved for the most anti-system, conspiracy-believing right wing. But he also became, in part, an expression of the emotions of a camp I would call anti-Smolensk.” http://www.polskatimes.pl/opinie/komentarze/a/linia-macierewicza-stala-sie-dla-pis-obciazeniem-jednak-odrobine-za-pozno-aby-uniknac-wrazenia-dysonansu-zametu-niekonsekwencji,13092485/

-- MICHAŁ SZUŁDRZYŃSKI ON THE HATRED OF 'LEMMINGS' - writes in RZ: “But the biggest problem is not just contempt, not just the attitude of the 'lemmings'. The problem is the great charge of dislike and hatred that can be observed on this occasion. Although the right is again accused of "sowing hatred," it is all the more worthwhile to pay attention to the obsessive hatred with which the other side approaches its political opponents. Hatred is never good, because evil cannot be the path to any good.”

-- SZUŁDRZYŃSKI ON WHAT 'LEMMINGS' EXTRACT FROM THE INFORMATION NOISE FOR THEIR NARRATIVE: “Thus, one can hear that the reprivatization scandal was fabricated by Zbigniew Ziobro and Patryk Jaki, who supposedly clarified it and imprisoned their university friend (in reality, 'Gazeta Wyborcza' published a series of articles showing that Deputy Head of Services Maciej Wąsik knew Jakub R. well – an official of the Warsaw City Hall arrested in the reprivatization case). That polls show Donald Tusk will win against Andrzej Duda (in reality, a survey by IBRiS for 'Rzeczpospolita' indicates that if the first round were held today, there would be a tie). A constant theme, of course, is that the Smolensk catastrophe happened because Jarosław Kaczyński ordered his brother to land via satellite phone despite bad weather at the airport (in reality, as Maciej Lasek, head of the commission appointed during the PO era, recently explained, both politicians called each other before the president was informed that the conditions precluded landing).” http://www.rp.pl/Felietony/304129912-Michal-Szuldrzynski-Codzienna-mowa-nienawisci-w-restauracjach-Warszawy.html

-- NOT A DICTATORSHIP, BUT A MESS - writes Grzegorz Sroczyński on gazeta.pl: “Weaker polls are also an opportunity for the anti-PiS camp (and especially its well-known faces) to reconcile with Kaczyński's electorate and recognize that they are not unthinking masses impervious to arguments, that they can change their minds and it is worth – instead of shaking fists at them – to speak and write to them as well. This, in turn, requires practicing normal, not identity-based, journalism. 'Let's not say we're facing a dictatorship, but that we're facing a mess and chaos' – this is a wise political message from Ludwik Dorn from one of his interviews. I could sign up for that.”

-- PIS, WEAKENING IN POLLS, IS BEING STRIPPED OF ITS AURA OF EFFECTIVENESS - SROCZYŃSKI CONTINUES: PiS, weakening in polls, is being stripped of its aura of effectiveness. After cries of triumph and after indulging in new polls, the anti-PiS camp may begin to see Kaczyński more realistically. As a politician who is not so strong and does not have enough support to establish any "camps" in Poland. Thanks to this, instead of painting Kaczyński as a dictator for people and driving supporters to him, the anti-PiS camp will focus on holding Kaczyński accountable for normal, tedious politics (which, by the way, it has already begun by effectively tracking government bonuses).

-- KACZYŃSKI IS BECOMING A COMMON DETERGENT - writes Sroczyński: “Everything that distinguishes Kaczyński from other Polish politicians and has built his strength is the aura of authoritarianism with which his opponents have surrounded him. Only in this one category of 'authoritarian ruler' does Kaczyński stand out from other detergents on the shelf, like laundry detergent. Without this marketing addition, he becomes a common detergent. Kaczyński – a common politician – will be judged by his voters like other politicians: on the quality of state management, the work of courts and offices, potholes in roads, in which – as we know – he is not a master. Weakening polls allow emotions and the mood of dread to subside. And to return to practicing politics. Populists thrive in an atmosphere of dread created by their opponents; without it, they become the same as all politicians in globalized capitalism, i.e., quite helpless, weak, and lost.” http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/7,161770,23265771,sroczynski-pis-slabnie-to-najlepszy-moment-zeby-przestac.html#Z_MT

-- EWA SIEDLECKA ON GERSDORF'S HAMLETIAN CHOICE: “President Gersdorf had the choice between risking an accusation of violating the constitution or resigning from resistance on the grounds that PiS would push through its agenda anyway and bring the new KRS into operation.” https://www.polityka.pl/tygodnikpolityka/kraj/1745412,1,prezes-gersdorf-zwolala-posiedzenie-krs-to-byl-hamletowski-wybor.read

-- JACEK HARŁUKOWICZ ON PLATFORMA'S PROBLEM WITH UJAZDOWSKI: “But as late as Tuesday morning, I was assured that it would only concern Ujazdowski's entry into the PO shadow cabinet – says Tomasz Owczarek, head of the association Wrocławski Ruch Obywatelski (WRO). He served as the informal campaign manager at Chybicka. Today he says: – I have absolutely no intention of cooperating with Kazimierz Ujazdowski, he is not my candidate. He doesn't know our city. An experienced politician from Wrocław's Platform smiles wryly: – The youth have received a solid lesson in real politics.”

-- UJAZDOWSKI IS PRETENDING AND DILUTING HIS CONSERVATISM - writes Harłukowicz: “He is not against gay people, as the mayor of Wrocław he will not ban their parade, and he will not oppose the financing of in vitro fertilization from the city's budget. In March of this year, he voted in the European Parliament first against a ban on "conversion therapies," which stem from the pseudoscientific theory of "curing" homosexuality, and earlier against the adoption of the anti-violence convention by the European Parliament.” http://wyborcza.pl/magazyn/7,124059,23265350,kogo-udaje-ujazdowski-kandydat-po-na-prezydenta-wroclawia-od.html

-- GW ON ANNA BIELECKA'S POLITICAL SALON (Iwona Szpala and Agata Kondzińska): “- It is heard more and more often that the center of power from Nowogrodzka has moved to Wilcza – says a politician from the United Right camp. There, in Anna Bielecka's apartment, ideas such as Julia Przyłębska's presidency of the Constitutional Tribunal are reportedly being forged.”

-- BIELECKA WAS SAID TO HAVE INTERVENED FOR SOLVERE: “Solvere is currently in liquidation, but its owners have returned to the Prime Minister's Chancellery, even though the prosecutor's office is investigating whether they did not violate the anti-corruption act. – Anna Bielecka was the promoter of Plakwicz and Matczuk (...) – tells us our informant. – It was Bielecka who was to intervene for Plakwicz and Matczuk so that they could return to government positions at the Prime Minister's office.” http://wyborcza.pl/magazyn/7,124059,23268280,salonik-pani-bieleckiej-na-zapleczu-pis-tu-sie-spotyka-nowa.html

-- JERZY DZIEWULSKI ON HOW HE ENTERED POLITICS - says to Eliza Olczyk in RZ: “You are right, it was a strange idea. In 1991, I ran for the Sejm at the request of my friend Zbyszek Eysmont, later a minister without portfolio in Hanna Suchocka's government. He called me one day and said: 'Janusz Rewiński and I are forming a party. It's supposed to be a kind of prank, but if there are well-known and popular people on the lists, we'll show that anyone can get into the Sejm, not just a professional politician.' And he asked me to support them, as my name was very well-known at the time. I agreed reluctantly, adding that I would not campaign. I was placed on the list in the Bielsko-Biała constituency. I wasn't there even once, for which I apologize to the residents of Bielsko, I didn't spend a single złoty on promotion, I didn't put up a single poster, and I was elected. About a year and a half after the election, the governor of Bielsko accused me of financing the campaign and posters with money from Bogusław Bagsik.”

-- DZIEWULSKI ON LUSTRATION AND THE STANISZEWSKA FILE, WHICH CONTAINED NOTHING: “For example, that Grażyna Staniszewska, a member of the Democratic Union from the same constituency as me, never signed anything in her life, and therefore cannot be accused of collaborating with the SB. She was a woman who could not be broken. I also looked at materials concerning Lech Wałęsa, of which there were so many that the entire desk was piled high with documents. Of course, there was also that crucial file, from which documents later disappeared. But when I looked through it, it contained everything necessary, and I'll say one thing – if the PRL had such agents, it's no wonder it fell. I also had an interesting incident – the Deputy Speaker of the Sejm from KPN, Piotr Wójcik, came to me, who really wanted me to review Moczulski's file and assess whether his leader had collaborated with the SB. I couldn't confirm it 100 percent, but Wójcik insisted that I admit that the materials had been falsified.” http://archiwum.rp.pl/artykul/1370950-Widzialem-teczki-osob-z-listy-Macierewicza.html

-- STANISŁAW SKARŻYŃSKI ON PRESIDENT DUDA QUOTING "PRZEDWIOŚNIE" - writes in GW: “Young Baryka traveled by train from the East without any papers – like those refugees from Chechnya, whom Minister Błaszczak ordered to rot at the border without the right to apply for asylum.” http://wyborcza.pl/magazyn/7,124059,23265771,kwiatki-przedwiosnia-andrzej-duda-nie-uwazal-w-szkole.html

-- JAKUB MAJMUREK ON THE POLITICS OF BROKEN THERMOMETERS: “This may not be enough, because Platforma's problem in Warsaw is not Mayor Gronkiewicz-Waltz, but the entire vision of modernization based on the concept of a city for cars, business, and the middle class, which is gritting its teeth to pay off its franc loans. The prevalence of broken thermometer politics is a sign that Polish politics needs not only generational change, but above all more democratic rules of interaction between society and the political class. Without civic institutions strong enough to force politicians to consider the readings of various thermometers, politicians will continue to postpone work on problems, hoping they will explode in the hands of their successors.” http://wyborcza.pl/7,75968,23263876,polityka-zbitych-termometrow-wylaczono-jedna-z-dwoch-stacji.html
