Czarzasty's Proposal on Reparations:

There is no security for Poland without Germany's security.

Michał Olech

- I have hope. Because we need to talk about it. I am absolutely not distancing myself from it. I am here to remind people of this matter, without forgetting other issues. Do I want to shy away from arguments like 'let's only talk about reparations because it's the most important thing in the world'? To truly conclude World War II. Fine, we need to talk about it. In my opinion, in three aspects - stated Włodzimierz Czarzasty at a press briefing in Germany.

- And this is what I want to present to the German President, the head of parliament, and the Minister of National Defence. I have a couple more meetings where I will present this. The first matter is the issue of compensation for living individuals; this should happen. Prime Minister Tusk was right when he said, 'Hurry up with this matter.' We know why. These living people should feel that they know they have been wronged. In their opinion, and in ours, there has been no compensation. Therefore, it must be done - the Marshal of the Sejm continued.

- The second matter is the issue of symbolism, the entire symbolism. Yes, we know. I will lay flowers at the site where a monument dedicated to Polish victims, to Poles in Berlin, is to be built. It is known that monuments can be built faster or slower. I would like to speed up this construction a bit, saying that this is the second sphere and it is a very serious sphere. And a third very serious sphere. When talking about reparations, I would rather focus on achieving this by building these reparations, for example, through joint infrastructure that will give us a future. This is how I think one should talk with Germany - he said.

- Alright, let's build something together, let's undertake great infrastructural projects. That is one direction, and it is a serious direction. A second very serious direction. Let's invest in our security. You can transfer enormous financial resources, for example, to joint infrastructure or invest in joint security. You can give more. You can think about it, because you are also threatened, and we are threatened - Czarzasty emphasized.

As he said: - So, if for legal reasons you believe there is no point in returning to these reparations, directly paid for what tragically happened to us during World War II, then let's talk in this way. Let's fulfill this element of reparations through joint initiatives in infrastructure, economy, and security. There are many projects related to security.

- You know that Germany is building, is trying to build that dome, similar to what Israel built at one time, regarding security. Okay, why shouldn't this dome also cover Poland? If there are technical possibilities, if there are technical possibilities, why should Germany invest in it? Why can't an element of these reparations translate into this, if there is no other way or if it is difficult to negotiate that way. Is it easy? Difficult, because more years have passed since the end of World War II, and there are many arguments from Germany's side that they do not want to go that way. Well, if someone doesn't want to go one way, there is another way. I won't say there's a third way, because this might not be the right place to talk about a third way, but I simply think so and this is the way of thinking I want to present - he continued.

- Let's invest together, let's build our security together, let's create infrastructural elements together. That's what ministers are for. That's what the government is for. I am here to create a climate around this and say we want to cooperate with you. There is no security. This thesis - there is no security for Poland without Germany's security. I believe in this, just as I believe that there is no secure Poland without a secure, independent, functioning Ukraine - he stressed.
