"Freedom Irritates Lawmakers": Nawrocki Justifies Today’s Vetoes

- The second veto concerns the act on the National Centre for Research and Development, NCBR. This veto can be summarized in one sentence: science for scientists, not for politicians. The proposed act allows those in power to freely nominate and dismiss scientists, researchers, professors, and to take over scientific institutes at their political whim. This is centralization, politicization, and intimidation of the scientific community - said President Karol Nawrocki in a recording published by the Chancellery of the President.

- This is a clear signal: “if you are inconvenient for the authorities, if you prove something against them – you can be fired”. This is not how development and innovation are built. This is how they are destroyed. Science needs freedom. Science needs autonomy. Science needs the courage to think, not fear of this or that minister - he continued.

- I cannot sign an act that turns scientific research into a tool of political control - he pointed out.

“An Act That Strengthens Large Corporations at the Expense of Citizens”

- The third veto concerns the insurance market. This is an act that strengthens large corporations at the expense of citizens. A missed SMS, email, or app notification is enough for a person to lose their right to compensation. This particularly affects the elderly, the vulnerable, and those less digitally engaged - the president continued.

- The role of the state is not to protect the strong. The role of the state is to protect the citizen. Article 76 of the Constitution states: the consumer is to be protected from unfair practices. This act does the exact opposite. I have previously said “no” to such solutions. And I say “no” again today - he argued.

“Freedom Irritates Lawmakers”

- The act on the DSA and the act on NCBR share one very disturbing conclusion: freedom irritates lawmakers. One attacks freedom of speech, the other attacks freedom of science. This is a bad and dangerous direction. Poles will not allow their freedom to be taken away. As President, I will never allow it - he emphasized.
