Trzaskowski Withdraws Warsaw Nighttime Alcohol Ban Proposal, Opts for Pilot Program in Two Districts Instead

During a session of the Warsaw City Council dedicated to the introduction of a nighttime alcohol ban within the city, Maciej Fijałkowski, a representative of Warsaw's Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, announced:

- On behalf of the Mayor, I request the withdrawal of project, document number 550, from today's agenda and the simultaneous introduction of two draft resolutions [...]. These are draft resolutions concerning the request for opinions from the district councils of the Capital City of Warsaw regarding a draft resolution of the Capital City of Warsaw Council on introducing a restriction on the nighttime sale of alcoholic beverages intended for consumption outside the point of sale within the Śródmieście district. And concurrently, a second draft with the same title, referring to the Praga Północ district.

This means that the Mayor of Warsaw has backed down from his own proposed project, which aimed to restrict nighttime alcohol sales from 11 PM to 6 AM.

Earlier, Jarosław Szostakowski, head of the Civic Platform (PO) councillors' club, presented a position in which they argued that introducing a city-wide nighttime alcohol ban “is not proportionate to the scale of the problem and generates high social and economic costs.” The position proposed the introduction of a pilot nighttime alcohol ban in Śródmieście and Praga Północ – precisely what the mayor's representative has now submitted.

As Rafał Trzaskowski himself wrote, absent from the proceedings: - The restrictions would apply primarily in two key districts: Śródmieście and Praga-Północ. I respect the opinions of Warsaw residents, which they expressed during social consultations, and we are taking a step in this direction as part of a pilot program, similar to what has happened in many cities.

- This solution will have the support of the majority of the Council. Step by step. Moving forward - added the Mayor of Warsaw.
