Behind these statistics lie emotions. There is the depravity of German perpetrators, fueled by the words of Adolf Hitler in Obersalzberg. He shouted: be merciless, be brutal. The destruction of Poland is your first task. After the words came deeds, and after the deeds, words also followed. Because one of the German airmen said that what he saw after dropping 46 tons of bombs on Wieluń was terrifyingly beautiful. He felt pride in the task accomplished, in death, in destruction. What happened in Poland on September 1, 1939, and throughout World War II, was a hecatomb and was what the American philosopher and historian, Richard Lucas, called the forgotten Holocaust. It was a forgotten Holocaust, because after those who dropped the bombs, others followed – stated President Karol Nawrocki in Wieluń.
