- We consider the decision of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's government to grant political asylum to Marcin Romanowski, who is sought under a European Arrest Warrant, an unfriendly act towards the Republic of Poland and contrary to the elementary principles governing member states of the European Union - stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. - In particular, this action is contrary to the fundamental principle of loyal cooperation within the meaning of Article 4(3) of the Treaty on European Union - the ministry emphasized in a statement. - The justification for this decision, based on alleged political persecution, is offensive to citizens and Polish authorities - it was added. - In response to such an action, the Hungarian Ambassador to Poland will be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today to receive a formal protest from the Polish side in this matter - it was informed. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also conveyed that: - At the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has decided to summon the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Hungary, Sebastian Kęciek, to Warsaw for consultations. The diplomatic ministry pointed out that granting international protection in any EU member state does not exempt that country from the obligation to execute a European Arrest Warrant. - If Hungary fails to meet its European obligations, Poland will also petition the European Commission to initiate proceedings against Hungary in accordance with Article 259 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union - it was announced.
